Abstract:A series of N,N,N-tridentate iron (II) complexes bearing 2-imino-1,10-phenanthrolines, [2-{(2,6-R1,R3-4-R2-C6H2)NC(R)}-1,10-phen]FeCl2, was synthesized and characterized by IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. One of these complexes (18b) was determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography for its unambiguous structure. These iron(II) complexes were found to exhibit remarkable activities for ethylene oligomerization in the presence of MAO or MMAO cocatalyst affording α-olefins with high selectivity and the composition of oligomers followed the Schluz–Flory distribution. The effects of substituents on imino fragment on the activity were explored in detail; complexes with mono substituent at the ortho-position of the phenyl ring showed high activities with low K values, suggesting that fine tuning of the steric bulk of substituents on the imino fragment directly affects both the activity and the selectivity.

Abstract:A series of iron complexes containing 2-imino-1,10-phenanthrolinyl ligands, LFeCl 2 (L=2-(ArN=CR)-1,10-phen), have been synthesized and sufficiently characterized by elemental and spectroscopic analysis as well as by X-ray diffraction analysis. Upon activation with methylaluminoxane (MAO), these iron(II) complexes showed high catalytic activities [up to 4.91×10 7 g mol 1 (Fe) h 1 ] for ethylene oligomerization. The distribution of oligomers produced follows Schluz-Flory rule with high selectivity of α-olefins. Both the steric and electronic effects of coordinative ligands affect the catalytic activity and the properties of the resultant products. The parameters of the reaction conditions were also investigated to explore the catalytic potentials of these complexes.

Abstract:The dinuclear chromium complexes [Cr-2(N,O)(3)Cl-3] (6) (N,O = 4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazolylmethanolate), [Cr-2(N,O-Me2)(2)(EtOH)(2)Cl-4] (7) and [Cr-2(N,O-Me2)(2)(H2O)(2)Cl-4] (8) (N,O-Me2 = 4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazolyldimethylmethanolate) have been prepared and characterized, including by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 6 is unsymmetrical, with two chloride ligands terminally bound to one Cr atom, whereas 7 and 8 (in 8 center dot C4H8O) which contain two molecules of coordinated ethanol or water, respectively, are centrosymmetric. These chromium complexes are paramagnetic, and the magnetic properties of 6 and 7 in the solid state correspond to antiferromagnetic behaviour, which was confirmed by DFT calculations of their electronic structures. Complexes 6-8 were evaluated in the catalytic oligomerization and/or polymerization of ethylene with different aluminium-based cocatalysts, and MMAO proved to be the most effective one. In the presence of MMAO, the influence of different reaction parameters, such as the Al/Cr molar ratio, reaction temperature and ethylene pressure, was investigated. Complex 7 showed the highest activity for ethylene polymerization at both 1 atm and 10 atm of ethylene pressure, up to 620 000 g mol(-1)(Cr) h(-1) in the latter case.

Abstract:Two new FI complexes, bis[N-(3-allylsalicylidene)-pentafluoroanilinato]titanium(IV) dichloride (AFI) and bis[N-(3-propylsalicylidene)-pentafluoroanilinato]titanium(IV) dichloride (PFI) were designed and synthesized as catalysts for living polymerization of ethylene. The two complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopy and X-ray single diffraction. The catalysts were evaluated in ethylene polymerization under atmospheric pressure. It was found that both catalysts exhibited high activity and good livingness. The effects of temperature and dMAO/Ti molar ratio on the polymerization behavior of AFI were studied in detail. Abstract:The catalytic activity of a new family of aluminum bis(iminophosphorano)methanide and methandiide complexes (1–5) toward olefin polymerization has been evaluated. The complexes (1–3) are monomeric methanide complexes of the form [κN,κN′-{(Me3SiNP(Ph)2)2CH}Al(Cl)R] (R=Et) (1) or [κN,κN′-{(Me3SiNP(Ph)2)2CH}AlR2} (R=Me, Bu) (2, 3) which have a structure reminiscent of R2Al(acac) complexes. These systems are moderately effective as transition metal-free ethylene polymerization catalysts when activated by trityl tetrafluoroborate yielding slurry polymerization activities in the range of 3–68g polymer/(mmol Alh) (normalized to 1atm) under normal industrial conditions. A remarkable bis(iminophosphorano)methandiide complex [κC,κC,κN,κN′-{(Me3SiNP(Ph)2)2C}(R2Al)2] (R=Me) (4) which is based on a spirocyclic carbon center subtended by two AlMe2 units (each of which is further coordinated with an imine group) gave, under similar catalytic activation and reaction conditions, very high polymerization activity (2×103g polymer/(mmol Alh)) for ethylene. Solution polymerization activity was also high. This system also co-polymerized ethylene and 1-octene. The analog 5 wherein R=Bu was not so effective. These latter complexes indicate that dialuminum species may provide effective transition metal-free olefin polymerization systems.

Abstract:A series of iron and cobalt complexes ligated with different bis(imino)pyridyl ligands were synthesized and used in ethylene polymerization. The reaction temperature and Al/Fe ratio had a great influence on the activities and properties of the polymer in the iron system when methylaluminoxane was used as the cocatalyst. Bimodal polyethylene, unimodal polyethylene, and oligomers were achieved with ethylene polymerization according to the structures of the ligands and polymerization conditions. The cobalt systems showed low activities when bis(imino)pyridyl was used as the ligand in comparison with the iron system catalysts. Ethylene oligomerization was conducted, and the main products were 1-butylene and 1-hexene. A fast deactivation process was observed from the curve of the polymerization kinetics. Abstract:Several copper(II) complexes bearing bidentate anilido-imine ligands [(Ar ' N=CHC6H4-NAr)Cu](2)(mu-Cl)(2) (Ar = Ar ' = 2,6-Me2C6H3 (1a); Ar = Ar ' = 2,6-Et2C6H3 (1b); Ar = 3,5-(CF3)(2)C6H3, Ar ' = 2,6-(Pr2C6H3)-Pr-1 (1d); Ar = p-OMeC6H4, Ar ' = 2,6-(Pr2C6H3)-Pr-i (le)), (Ar ' N=CHC6H4-NAr)CuCI (Ar = Ar ' = 2,6-(Pr2C6H3)-Pr-i (1c)), and that bearing tridentate quinolinyl anilido-imine ligand (2,6-(i)pr(2)C(6)H(3)N=CHC6H4-NAr)CuCI (Ar = 8-quinolinyl (1f)) were synthesized via reactions of the corresponding ligands with (BuLi)-Bu-n and subsequent in-situ addition of CuCl2. The X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that la and ld are dinuclear, while 1f with N,N,N-tridentate ligand is in monomeric form. In the presence of 2,2 '-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN), these well-defined complexes showed moderate to high activities in reverse ATRP of styrene. Abstract:A series of penta-coordinated iron complexes with 2,6-bis(imino)pyridine ligands were prepared and used in ethylene polymerization or oligomerization with methylaluminoxane as (MAO) co-catalyst. The activity of the complexes depends strongly on the steric and electronic effects of the ligands, in which the electronic conjugated system plays an important role. NN'-Bis(alpha,alpha-diphenyl) methyl 2,6-bis(imino)pyridine iron complex (1) could not activate ethylene, N,N'-difluorenyl-2,6-bis(imino)pyridine iron complex (2) exhibited high activity for ethylene oligomerization, whilst N,N'-diaryl 2,6-bis(imino)pyridine iron complexes (3-6) performed ethylene polymerization. Abstract:A series of new hydroxyindanone-imine ligands [PhN=CC2H3(CH3)C6H2(CH3)OH] (HL1) and [ArN=CC2H3(CH3)C6H2(R)OH] (Ar = 2,6-i-Pr(2)C(6)H(3), R = Me (HL2), R = H (HL3), and R = Cl (HL4)) were synthesized and characterized. Reactions of hydroxyindanone-imines with Ni(OAc)(2).4H(2)O result in the formation of the trinuclear hexa(indanone-iminato)tri(nickel(II)) complex Ni(3)[PhN=CC2H3(CH3)C6H2(CH3)O](6) (1) and the mononuclear bis(indanone-iminato)nickel(II) complexes Ni[ArN=CC2H3(CH3)C6H2(R)O](2) (Ar = 2,6-i-Pr(2)C(6)H(3), R = Me (2), R = H (3), and R = Cl (4)). All nickel complexes were characterized by their IR, NMR spectra and elemental analyses. In addition, X-ray structure analyses were performed for complexes 1 and 2. After being activated with methylaluminoxane (MAO), these nickel(II) complexes can be used as catalysts for the polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) to produce syndiotactic-rich PMMA. Catalytic activities and the degree of syndiotacticity of PMMA have been investigated for various reaction conditions.

Abstract:A series of novel chromium complexes that bear anilido-imine ligands, [{ortho-C(6)H(4)(NAr')(CH=NAr '')}CrCl(2)(thf)(2)] [Ar' = Ar '' = C(6)H(5) (1); Ar' = Ar '' = p-MeC(6)H(4) (2); Ar' = Ar '' = 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3) (3); Ar' = 2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3), Ar '' = 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3) (4); Ar' = Ar '' = 2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3) (5)], have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, and ESI-MS. The molecular structures of complexes 1 and 2 have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. When activated with methylaluminoxane (MAO), these complexes exhibit reasonable to good catalytic activity for ethylene polymerization and produce polyethylene with moderate molecular weights.

Abstract:A series of new cobalt and nickel complexes LMX2 (M=Co, X=Cl; M=Ni, X=Br) bearing 2, 6-bis(imino)phenoxy ligands were synthesized. The solid-state structures of 1 and 4 have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. Treatment of the complexes LMX2 with methylaluminoxane (MAO) leads to active catalysts for oligomerization of ethylene with catalytic activities in the range of 1.2×105–2.1×105 g mol−1 h−1 atm−1 for Ni complexes, and ∼103 g mol−1 h−1 atm−1 for Co complexes. The oligomers were olefins from C4 to C16.

Abstract:Treatment of azaallyl-lithium [LiN(R)C(But)CHR] with equal portion of 1-piperidinecarbonitrile gave mix-substituted β-diketiminato-lithium 2. Double ratio of 2 with FeCl2, CoCl2 and NiCl2·6H2O yielded the β-diketiminate iron 3, cobalt 4, nickel 5, or equivalent of ZrCl4 led to zirconium complex 6, respectively. The structural features of these complexes were described, and the catalytical behaviors of the complexes 3–6 for the polymerization of ethylene were investigated.

Abstract:Bis(imino)aryl NCN pincer Ni(II) complexes 2,6-(ArN=CH)(2)C(6)H(3)NiBr (1: Ar = 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3); 2: Ar = 2,6-Et(2)C(6)H(3); 3: Ar = 2,6-(i)Pr(2)C(6)H(3)) were prepared via the oxidative-addition of Ni(0)(Ph(3)P)(4) with bis(N-aryl)-2-bromoisophthalaldimine. These nickel complexes were characterized by NMR and elemental analyses. Their solid molecular structures were established by X-ray diffraction analyses. The nickel metal centers adopt distorted square planar geometries with the bromine atoms acting as one coordinate ligands. The NCN pincer Fe(II) complexes 2,6-(ArN=CH)(2)C(6)H(3)Fe(μ-Cl)(2)Li(THF)(2) (4: Ar = 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3); 5: Ar = 2,6-Et(2)C(6)H(3); 6: Ar = 2,6-(i)Pr(2)C(6)H(3)) were synthesized by lithium salt metathesis reactions of the ligand lithium salts with FeCl(2). X-ray structure analyses of 4 and 5 revealed that the Fe(II) complexes are hetero-dinuclear with the iron atoms in trigonal bipyramidal environments. When activated with MAO, the nickel complexes are active for norbornene vinyl polymerization but are inert for butadiene polymerization. The Fe(II) complexes show moderate activities in butadiene polymerization when activated with alkylaluminium, affording the cis-1,4 enriched polymer.

Abstract:Reactions of N,N,N-tridentate quinolinyl anilido-imine ligands with AlMe(3) afford mononuclear aluminum complexes {κ(3)-[{2-[ArN=C(H)]C(6)H(4)}N(8-C(9)H(6)N)]}AlMe(2) (Ar = 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3) (1a), 2,6-Et(2)C(6)H(3) (1b), 2,6-(i)Pr(2)C(6)H(3) (1c)) or dinuclear complexes AlMe(3){κ(1)-[{2-[ArN=C(H)C(6)H(4)]N(8-C(9)H(6)N)}-κ(2)]AlMe(2) (R = 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3) (2a), 2,6-Et(2)C(6)H(3) (2b), 2,6-(i)Pr(2)C(6)H(3) (2c)) depending on the ratios of reactants used. Similar reactions of ZnEt(2) with these ligands give the monoligated ethyl zinc complexes {κ(3)-[{2-[ArN=C(H)]C(6)H(4)}N(8-C(9)H(6)N)]}ZnEt (Ar = 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3) (3a), 2,6-Et(2)C(6)H(3) (3b), 2,6-(i)Pr(2)C(6)H(3) (3c)) or bisligated complexes {κ(3)-[{2-[ArN=C(H)]C(6)H(4)}N(8-C(9)H(6)N)]}Zn{κ(2)-[{2-[ArN=C(H)]C(6)H(4)}N(8-C(9)H(6)N)]} (Ar = 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3) (4a), 2,6-Et(2)C(6)H(3) (4b), 2,6-(i)Pr(2)C(6)H(3) (4c)). These complexes were well characterized by NMR and the structures of 1a, 2a, 2c, 3b and 4c were confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The aluminum and zinc complexes were tested to initiate lactide polymerization in which the zinc complexes show moderate to high activities in the presence of benzyl alcohol.

Abstract:A range of confined iminopyridine iron complexes with skeleton of 8-(arylimino)-5,6,7-trihydroquinolyl have been prepared and well characterized by HRMS spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy as well as elemental analysis. These iron complexes (Fe1–Fe5) serve as highly efficient pre-catalysts for conjugated dienes polymerization. By adjusting substituents of ligand framework, the stereoselectivity about 1,4-cis/trans could be switched from <1/99 to 96/4. An outstanding polymerization activity up to 108 g mol−1 h−1 was achieved with high molecular weight by employing Fe1 as pre-catalyst under optimum experimental conditions. What's more, the Fe1/MAO catalytic system showed excellent thermostability, which could lead to full conversion even at 100 °C within 10 min. Surprisingly, the polymerization activities of bio-based monomer β-farnesene and β-myrcene were able to reach 106 g mol−1 h−1 by Fe-1/MAO catalytic system, which was the highest activity of iron complex family to deliver the "green rubbers" with high molecular weights.

Complex 3c can be oxidized by alkyl chloride to dimeric complex {[NQNANIiPr]CrCl}(2)(mu-Cl)(2) (4) through a single-electron-transfer mechanism. Similar reaction of 2-(C9H6N)N-CHC6H4-HNAr ([NQNINA(Me)]H, Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3; [NQNINA(Et)]H, Ar = 2,6-Et(2)C6H3; [NQNANIiPr]H, Ar = 2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3)) with (BuLi)-Bu-n and CrCl3(THF)(3) furnishes [NQNANIR]CrCl(mu-Cl)(2)Li(THF)(2) (5a, R = Me; 5b, R = Et; 5c, R = Pr-i) in high yields. However, a chromium complex with a butyl-substituted ligand, [N(Q)(Bu)N(I)NA(iPr)]CrCl2 (6), is obtained when 2 equiv of (BuLi)-Bu-n is used. The molecular structures of 1c, 2c, 3c, 4, 5c, and 6 are confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Upon activation with MAO, the Cr(III) complexes (1a-1c, 4, and 5a-5c) show moderate catalytic activities (50 to 218 kg of PE(.)mol(Cr)-1.h1) in ethylene polymerization, whereas the Cr(II) complexes 2c, 3b, and 3c are inert under the same conditions.
Zirconium and Hafnium Complexes with New Tetra-Azane Ligands: Synthesis, Characterization and Catalytic Properties for Ethylene Polymerization

Abstract:Two new anilido-imine tetra-azane ligands, 1,2-[(2'-(ArNH)C6H4HC=N)](2)C6H4 (Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3 ((LH2)-H-1) and 2,6-(Pr2C6H3)-Pr-i ((LH2)-H-2)), were synthesized by the condensation reaction of o-phenylenediamine with the corresponding 2-(arylamino)benzaldehyde, and their zirconium and hafnium complexes, (LMCl2)-M-1 (M = Zr (1b), Hf (1c)) and (LMCl2)-M-2 (M = Zr (2b), Hf (2c)), were synthesized in high yields (61-66%) by the reactions of (LLi2)-Li-1 and (LLi2)-Li-2 with MCl4 in toluene. Direct HO-elimination reactions of (LH2)-H-1 with MCl4 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) in toluene at 140 degrees C under vacuum afforded the products (LHMCI3)-H-1 [M = Ti (1a'), Zr (1b'), Hf (1c')] with a partially deprotonated tridentate ligand in good to high yields (48-70%). All the new complexes were characterized by H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy and the molecular structures of 1b and 2c were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The metal centers in both complexes are six-coordinated with a distorted octahedral geometry. Upon activation with MAO or AlR3/Ph3CB(C6F5)(4), complexes 1b-1c and 2b-2c all exhibit moderate catalytic activity for ethylene polymerization and produce linear polyethylene with ultra-high molar masses (100-184 x 10(4) g/mol).
