Abstract:Penetration of UV rays through the ozone layer, has been shown to cause adverse health effects on human beings in the recent years, highlighting the need for protection from UV rays. The present study is on development of a UV protective cotton fabric with antibacterial and superhydrophobic properties using carbon dots and very long-chain fatty acids by simple dip coating method. Undoped CD, boron doped (BCD), nitrogen doped (NCD) and boron-nitrogen biatom doped (BNCD) carbon dots were synthesized from Glycyrrhiza glabra bark by the one-pot hydrothermal route and using these CDs and melissic acid, a superhydrophobic coating was formed over coated cotton. The synthesized carbon dots were investigated using TEM analysis, FT-IR and UV–visible spectroscopy. SEM, EDAX, X-ray diffraction and ATR-IR techniques were used to characterize the carbon dots-coated multifunctional cotton fabric. The disc-diffusion method was used to assess the antibacterial efficiency of the treated fabric. The ultraviolet screening ability of cotton fabrics coated with different kinds of carbon dots (undoped CD, BCD, NCD, BNCD) solution was assessed by UPF (UV protection factor) value. The water contact angle (WCA) of the coated cotton fabric was measured to confirm the superhydrophobic behaviour. The durability tests (thermal, washing, mechanical durability, water jet experiment, tap water test) were also performed for the coated cotton fabrics. The results of this study revealed that the prepared multifunctional cotton fabric had a maximum contact angle of 157° and among the various CD- coated fabric, BNCD melissic acid treated fabric had a high level of UV protection with excellent antibacterial activity. Thus, this study unravels the utility of carbon dots (CD, BCD, NCD, BNCD) in the fabrication of multifunctional cotton fabrics.
