Abstract:The molecular dynamics simulation was used to investigate the aqueous sodium sulphate solutions within quartz nanopores. Simulation was conducted for 13ns to obtain the equilibrium distribution of water molecules, sulphate and sodium ions (Na+ and SO42-) within the pores. The results clearly show an adsorption of sodium sulphate solution onto the quartz surface. However, Na+ shows a stronger attachment to the fully hydroxylated surface than Na+ due to size effects. The majority of Na+ ions appear within the primary and secondary water adsorption sites from the quartz surface. A special orientation of water molecules has been found in these layers, where one of the O-H bonds was parallel to the normal direction of the quartz surface. These observations illustrate the effect of quartz surface on the diffusion and precipitation of aqueous salt solutions under confinement, thus providing the mechanism of salt destruction on mural paintings.
Analysis of the Subcritical Carbon Dioxide-Water Interface.

Abstract:We follow the evolution of the H(2)O/CO(2) interface at 300 K from the low pressure limit to near-critical pressures in molecular dynamics simulations using the SPC water and EPM2 carbon dioxide models. The intrinsic structure of the interface is elucidated by accumulating density profiles relative to the fluctuating capillary wave surface. Our main finding is that a carbon dioxide film of increasing density and thickness grows in two stages at the interface while the structure of the water surface barely changes. At low density, the entire film density profile grows linearly with the bulk CO(2) density. This regime continues up to a bulk CO(2) density of roughly 0.00095 Å(-3). At pressures above this point, we observe a distinct second peak in the CO(2) density, along with a tail of excess density that decays exponentially with distance from the interface. The decay length of the exponential tail diverges with increasing CO(2) pressure according to an inverse power law decay. Over the entire range of pressures, the CO(2) film had no detectable effect on the orientational order of the water surface. As expected, when the film of excess CO(2) at the interface grows, we find that the surface tension drops with increasing pressure. This is in qualitative accord with existing measurements, although the rate at which the surface tension falls with increasing pressure according to the SPC and EPM2 models is too small, indicating that the surface excess of CO(2) is underestimated by these models.
Synergistic effects of CO2 density and salinity on the wetting behavior of formation water on sandstone surfaces: Molecular dynamics simulation

Abstract:Reservoir wettability is very important to predict the structure and residual capture capacity, potential CO2 leakage accidents and improve the risk assessment and sequestration safety during CO2 geological sequestration. The wetting behavior of fluid on reservoir rock surface is actually an interface phenomenon caused by the interaction of different fluid molecules on rock surface. At present, it is difficult for laboratory experiments to observe the microscopic interface phenomena at the molecular scale under reservoir conditions, while molecular dynamics simulations can characterize the microscopic changes in wetting behavior and analyze the interaction between the fluid and the rock surface. In this study, molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the effects of different CO2 densities and different salinities on the wetting behavior of formation water on the sandstone surface during CO2 geological sequestration. The results show that both salinity and CO2 density have significant effects on the wettability of quartz surfaces. However, the increase in salinity can only weaken the wettability, while the increase in CO2 density can transform the wettability of the quartz surface. Both CO2 molecules and H2O molecules form two adsorption layers at 3.5 Å and 6.9 Å away from the quartz surface. CO2 molecules will replace the positions originally occupied by water molecules on the quartz surface, reducing the contact area between water droplets and the quartz surface. The CO2 density mainly affects the interface behavior between the components in the system, while the NaCl concentration mainly affects the interaction between H2O molecules and ions in the system. The research results can further improve the understanding of the wettability of fluid on the pore surface of reservoir rocks during CO2 geological sequestration.

Abstract:The wettability of quartz surfaces is a critical property in numerous energy-related industrial processes. However, accurately quantifying wettability is challenging due to the multitude of factors that can influence wetting behavior. Herein, we proposed a generalized surface modeling procedure addressing microscopic insights to calculate the contact angles of liquids on quartz under different scenarios. An optical goniometer experimentally measured the contact angles and validated the proposed surface modeling procedure. The effects of surface density of hydroxyl groups, temperature, surfactants, and crude oil composition on the wettability of quartz surfaces were studied. The results revealed that an increased hydroxyl group density significantly improved water wettability on a quartz surface. An increased temperature reduced the water contact angle on quartz, and such decreasing rates became steeper at high temperatures. The surfactants' adsorption morphology determined the wettability of a quartz surface. Moreover, the polar components in crude oil significantly increased the hydrophobicity of a quartz surface, making it easier to adsorb more oil molecules to alter the quartz wettability further. The valuable outcomes of this paper contribute to understanding the complex quartz wettability and pave the way for further studies involving quartz surface modeling.

Abstract:The mechanism by which macroscopic measured contact angles on quartz surfaces change is discussed. Measurements made with decane-water-quartz systems indicate an increase followed by a decrease in the contact angle as the concentration of CTAB is increased. The angle does not change substantially when SDS is used. The predicted contact angles using only the measured DLVO components of disjoining pressure do not indicate the same trend. The decrease in contact angles at above the c.m.c. can be attributed to the formation of bilayers at the quartz surface. Any attempt made at predicting changes in contact angles must include the structural component in the disjoining pressure. This component dominates all the other interactions in the calculation of the apparent contact angle.

Abstract:It is of great importance to investigate gas and water flow characteristics to better understand the geological CO2 sequestration process. The interfacial tension between CO2 and brine and the wettability of reservoir rocks are the most important parameters for two‐phase flow in porous media that have a significant influence on the capacity of CO2 storage. In this paper, we present a set of interfacial tension data between CO2 and a sodium chloride (NaCl) solution and the contact angle data between CO2, NaCl and quartz by using a visual experimental method at multiple pressure, temperature and salinity conditions. We also performed simulations of CO2 and NaCl solution two‐phase flow in quartz bead‐packed beds by introducing interfacial tension and contact angle data into the pore network model to evaluate the relative permeability and capillary pressure. We found that the phase alternation of CO2 from a gas to its supercritical state has a significant influence on the wettability of pore surfaces and thus governs the capillary trapping mechanism. This indicates that CO2 sequestration efficiency in a saline aquifer will be greatly affected while CO2 is in its different phase states. The simulation results showed that a pore network model is available for the study of CO2 and brine two‐phase flow characteristics in porous media. © 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 34: 1756–1762, 2015
Regulated Transient Pool Boiling of Water During Quenching on Nanostructured Surfaces with Modified Wettability from Superhydrophilic to Superhydrophobic

Abstract:The effects of surface wettability, from superhydrophilic to superhydrophobic, on transient pool boiling of water under atmospheric pressure were experimentally examined by means of the quenching method with hot stainless steel spheres. The wettability changes, with a contact angle ranging from nearly 0° to more than 160°, were realized by nanostructured coating on the spheres. The quenching cooling rate was shown to slow down with increasing the contact angle as the vapor film was stabilized and retained by surface hydrophobicity even at very low wall superheats. Remarkable boiling heat transfer enhancement, with critical heat flux (CHF) increase up to nearly 70%, was achieved for the superhydrophilic case as compared to the original hydrophilic baseline case. As observed by high-speed imaging on the dynamic quenching processes, violent rewetting that stems from superhydrophilicity facilitated early collapse of the vapor film, thus leading to the great increase in film boiling heat transfer and CHF. The observations suggested an active means of regulation of transient pool boiling by employing the nanostructured surfaces with modified wettability to the extremes, toward either enhanced boiling heat transfer or retention of stable film boiling phase.

Abstract:HYPOTHESIS:Quartz is one of the most common but important minerals, and its wettability plays a significant role in affecting various natural and industrial processes. Studies have revealed that different crystal faces of quartz are with different wettabilities, but its mechanism is still vague. EXPERIMENTS AND SIMULATIONS:For specifying the mechanism of crystal face dependent wettability, the contact angles of three different liquids on the crystal faces of α-quartz are measured; the time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is employed to establish the crystal surface models; molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with the surface models are performed to understand the wetting behavior at molecular scale. FINDINGS:Based on the contact angle measurements, the wettabilities of different crystal faces of α-quartz are found different, which can be directly attributed to the concentration of hydroxyl group on crystal faces based on ToF-SIMS results. MD simulations yield consistent results with the contact angle order recognized from experiments, revealing that the surface hydroxyl group controls the wettability of α-quartz crystal faces. It is also recognized that the pristine surface atomic arrangement, especially the surface concentration of unsaturated bond (an intrinsic property of α-quartz), is the intrinsic cause of the difference in the concentration of hydroxyl group of the crystal surface.
Dewetting of silica surfaces upon reactions with supercritical CO2 and brine: pore-scale studies in micromodels

Abstract:Wettability of reservoir minerals and rocks is a critical factor controlling CO(2) mobility, residual trapping, and safe-storage in geologic carbon sequestration, and currently is the factor imparting the greatest uncertainty in predicting capillary behavior in porous media. Very little information on wettability in supercritical CO(2) (scCO(2))-mineral-brine systems is available. We studied pore-scale wettability and wettability alteration in scCO(2)-silica-brine systems using engineered micromodels (transparent pore networks), at 8.5 MPa and 45 °C, over a wide range of NaCl concentrations up to 5.0 M. Dewetting of silica surfaces upon reactions with scCO(2) was observed through water film thinning, water droplet formation, and contact angle increases within single pores. The brine contact angles increased from initial values near 0° up to 80° with larger increases under higher ionic strength conditions. Given the abundance of silica surfaces in reservoirs and caprocks, these results indicate that CO(2) induced dewetting may have important consequences on CO(2) sequestration including reducing capillary entry pressure, and altering quantities of CO(2) residual trapping, relative permeability, and caprock integrity.

Abstract:Quartz is a ubiquitous matter in natural rock and industrial production, and the wetting property of quartz surface plays a critical role in determining numerous industrial processes. However, the key mechanism for the effects of surface chemical composition (based on surface pretreatment) and crystal face on the wettability of quartz surface remains vague. Herein, by applying an advanced atomic force microscopy (AFM), we measured the contact angles of liquids on three common crystal faces of α-quartz after different pretreatments. The time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) analysis and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were further conducted to uncover the microscopic mechanism involved. It is found that the surface pretreatment does significantly affect the wettability of α-quartz faces, mainly because of the variation in surface hydroxyl concentration after different surface pretreatments. The magnitude of change in contact angle after distinct pretreatments is also affected by the liquid property. After certain pretreatments, although there is no difference in the wettability of different faces, the inherent atomic arrangement of crystal faces still causes discrepancies in other interface properties, e.g., liquid structure, diffusion coefficient of liquid molecule. The reasonable pretreatments of α-quartz for a range of applications are recommended based on the current findings.

Abstract:Supercritical geothermal resource is a renewable and carbon-free energy with enormous potential. Quantitative assessment of the geochemical processes involved in the future operation of this resource requires a comprehensive understanding of quartz solubility in subcritical and supercritical water. However, quartz solubility behaviors from subcritical to supercritical conditions are unclear, and the quartz solubility model requires refinement by improving the accuracy of experimental measurements. In this study, a series of in-situ sampling and measurements are conducted to investigate quartz solubility at 300–500 °C and 25–50 MPa by exploiting a novel and specifically designed experimental apparatus. The results indicate that the use of in-situ sampling and resistance continuous monitoring procedures can bring an accurate and reliable estimation of quartz solubilities near the supercritical point and in the low-density region. It also emerged that the quartz solubility in water is significantly affected by temperature and pressure both under subcritical and supercritical conditions, showing a positive correlation with pressure at isothermal and a retrograde behavior near the supercritical point. These features are interpreted by the thermodynamic theory, quartz hydrolysis process, and mathematical model. By combining our experimental results with high-quality data from the literature, a five-parameter density model is provided for the calculation of the silica concentrations in aqueous fluids up to supercritical geothermal conditions. To overcome the current limitations in the modeling of supercritical geothermal fluids, future experimental work needs to collect additional data on silica in real geofluids (e.g., saline fluid) to develop an advanced model. The findings of this study can help for a better understanding of geochemical processes in supercritical geothermal systems, as well as ore deposits and vent structures.

Abstract:As the mechanical mechanism in interfacial phenomenon, interfacial forces are known as important but difficult to measure experimentally. In recent years, molecular simulation has been rapidly developed to give novel way in inter-molecular forces. In this study, molecular simulation is introduced into wettability and several formulas are presented to model forces and their microscopic effect among water, vapor and quartz phases. A novel dynamic method is proposed to determine the reasonable value of the cutoff distance to calculate the contact angles in vapor-water-quartz systems with and without fluorocarbon surfactants treated using molecular simulation. With other improvement in molecular simulation, the results of the contact angles are closely consistent with the measured data.
Molecular dynamics simulation of wetting behavior at CO2/water/solid interfaces

Abstract:We used molecular dynamics simulation to demonstrate the microscopic wetting behavior of two solid model surfaces for the first time. Hydrophilic and hydrophobic features were modeled in a dense CO2 fluid environment under various densities. The water droplet loses contact with the surface under the influence of higher density CO2 fluids on the hydrophobic surface. For the hydrophilic surface, no separation between the water droplet and the surface was observed. However, the contact angle of the water droplet on the hydrophilic surface was found to increase with the fluid density. The effect of dense CO2 fluid on the surface wettability can be interpreted in terms of enhanced interactions from the surrounding CO2 molecules.

Abstract:The wettability of subsurface minerals determines the capillary trapping and fluid transport behaviors, essential for ensuring the safe and efficient hydrogen (H 2 ) geo-storage. This work decouples the impact of the in-situ conditions and the quartz surface properties (methylation degree and roughness) to elucidate the dominant mechanisms of wettability alteration, using molecular dynamic simulation. Our simulation models are capable of reproducing the experimental data of water contact angle on the quartz surface in H 2 environment. This work reveals a dual function of methylation degree on the wettability of quartz surfaces: First, it reduces the hydrophilicity of quartz due to the presence of hydrophobic methyl ligands and second, it enhances quartz hydrophilicity by suppressing hydrogen bonds between hydroxyl groups. The former function dominates at high methylation degrees, while the latter prevails at low ones. Also, we observe that the role of salinity and cushion gas on the quartz wettability depends on the quartz surface chemistry. Specifically, the wettability of the fully hydroxylated quartz surface remains largely unaffected by NaCl and CH 4 , whereas they drastically increase the hydrophilicity of the half-methylated quartz surface. We further reveal that the alteration of quartz wettability with pressure is predominantly driven by two mechanisms: the pinning effect and the H 2 -quartz interaction. The dominant mechanism is contingent upon the pressure range, as well as the surface chemistry and morphology. For instance, the dominant mechanism for the pristine and the fully hydroxylated surfaces is the pinning effect at the low-pressure range, while the H 2 -quartz interaction mechanism takes precedence at higher pressures. Interestingly, we detect a contact angle jump on the rough surfaces, signifying a transition state of the water film on these surfaces. These findings could reconcile the discrepancies related to the quartz wettability alteration under H 2 geo-storage conditions, pivotal for safe and efficient H 2 storage.

Sub-ambient Water Wettability of Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic SiO2 Surfaces.

Abstract:The wettability of SiO2 surfaces, crucial for understanding the phase transition processes of water, remains a topic of significant controversy in the literature due to uncertainties in experiments. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations offer a promising avenue for elucidating these complexities, yet studies specifically addressing water contact angles on hydrophilic and hydrophobic SiO2 surfaces at sub-ambient temperatures are notably absent. In this study, we experimentally measured water contact angles of hydrophilic and hydrophobic SiO2 surfaces at ambient temperature and employed MD to investigate water contact angles on Q3, Q3/Q4, and Q4 SiO2 surfaces across temperatures ranging from 220 to 300 K. We investigated the effects of the distribution of hydroxyl groups, droplet size, and hydroxyl density and found that the hydroxyl density had the largest impact on contact angle. Moreover, hydrogen bond analysis uncovered enhanced water affinities of Q3 and Q3/Q4 SiO2 surfaces at lower temperatures, and the spreading rate of precursor films reduced with decreasing temperature. This comprehensive study sheds light on the intricate interaction between surface properties and water behavior, promoting our understanding of the wettability of SiO2 surfaces.
Molecular Simulations of Carbon Dioxide and Water: Cation Solvation

Abstract:Proposed carbon dioxide sequestration scenarios in sedimentary reservoirs require investigation into the interactions between supercritical carbon dioxide, brines, and the mineral phases found in the basin and overlying caprock. Molecular simulations can help to understand the partitioning of metal cations between aqueous solutions and supercritical carbon dioxide where limited experimental data exist. In this effort, we used classical molecular dynamics simulations to compare the solvation of alkali and alkaline-earth metal cations in water and liquid CO(2) at 300 K by combining a flexible simple point charge model for water and an accurate flexible force field for CO(2). Solvation energies for these cations are larger in water than in carbon dioxide, suggesting that they will partition preferentially into water. In both aqueous and CO(2) solutions, the solvation energies decrease with cation size and increase with cation charge. However, changes in solvation energy with ionic radii are smaller in CO(2) than in water suggesting that the partitioning of cations into CO(2) will increase with ion size. Simulations of the interface between aqueous solution and supercritical CO(2) support this suggestion in that some large cations (e.g., Cs(+) and K(+)) partition into the CO(2) phase, often with a partial solvation sphere of water molecules.

Abstract:Geological carbon sequestration (GCS) is a promising method to alleviate CO 2 emission, while CO 2 structural trapping is one of main GCS mechanisms, in which the storage capacity is strongly dependent on CO 2 -water–rock contact angle. Although CO 2 -water-kaolite contact angle on basal surfaces has been studied, the knowledge about kaolinite edge surface wettability remains unknown. In this work, we use molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study CO 2 -water-kaolinite contact angle on kaolinite gibbsite and edge surfaces under a typical GCS condition (330 K and 200 bar). The common belief is that surface wettability in presence of water is determined by surface hydroxyl (–OH) group density. While the surface –OH group density of kaolinite edge surface is much lower than that of gibbsite surface, both gibbsite and edge surfaces are strongly water-wet. Edge surface is better hydrated than gibbsite surface as both silanol and aluminol groups can form hydrogen bonding with water molecules thanks to large effective water accessible volume around them, while pocket water can further anchor water film. Therefore, the atomic-level surface characteristics dictate interfacial water structures which determine CO 2 -water-kaolinite contact angle. Our study provides important insights into the effect of surface heterogeneity on interfacial water structures, and kaolinite gibbsite and edge surface wettability which is crucial to the optimization of GCS processes.

We used large-scale molecular dynamics simulations to study the behavior of supercritical CO2 and aqueous fluids on both the hydrophilic and hydrophobic basal surfaces of kaolinite, a common clay mineral. In the presence of a bulk aqueous phase, supercritical CO2 forms a nonwetting droplet above the hydrophilic surface of kaolinite. This CO2 droplet is separated from the mineral surface by distinct layers of water, which prevent the CO2 droplet from interacting directly with the mineral surface. Conversely, both CO2 and H2O molecules interact directly with the hydrophobic surface of kaolinite. In the presence of bulk supercritical CO2, nonwetting aqueous droplets interact with the hydrophobic surface of kaolinite via a mixture of adsorbed CO2 and H2O molecules. Because nucleation and precipitation of minerals should depend strongly on the local distribution of CO2, H2O, and ion species, these nanoscale surface interactions are expected to influence long-term mineralization of injected carbon dioxide.

Abstract:<p>Wettability is a deciding attribute in enhance oil recovery research, thus plays a vital role in unconventional reservoir development. Previous studies were focused on wettability modulation of the reservoir rocks by changing the properties of fluids. However, the wettability alteration mechanism of tight sandstones remains unclear. In this study, the influence of molecular groups on wettability is discussed by measuring the contact angle of samples from the Upper Triassic Yanchang Formation after being subjected to the supercritical carbon dioxide-water-rock dynamic reaction. The mineral composition of the samples under different reaction times was characterized by XRD. Zeta potential measurements and the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) technique were combined to determine the type and amount of molecular groups on the rock surface. Results show that the sample becomes more hydrophilic with the reaction time because of the varied composition of rock minerals induced by the chemical reaction. However, it is not easy to discern the influence of different mineral content on wettability only through the XRD experiment. The Supercritical carbon dioxide - water - rock dynamic reaction reduced the absolute value of zeta potential and weakened the effect of the electrostatic force on wettability, yet increased the content of hydrophilic groups (C-O and C=O), and thus reduced the contact angle (altered the wettability towards more water-wet). This study can advance the understanding of the wettability alteration mechanism in tight sandstones and promote the development of carbon dioxide geologic sequestration and enhanced oil recovery technologies by the regulation of wettability.</p>

Abstract:The main purpose of this study focused on the feasibility of geologic CO2 sequestration within the actual geological conditions of the first Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project in China. This study investigated CO2-water-rock interactions under simulated hydrothermal conditions via physicochemical analyses and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Mass loss measurement and SEM showed that corrosion of feldspars, silica, and clay minerals increased with increasing temperature. Corrosion of sandstone samples in the CO2-containing fluid showed a positive correlation with temperature. During reaction at 70°C, 85°C, and 100°C, gibbsite (an intermediate mineral product) formed on the sample surface. This demonstrated mineral capture of CO2 and supported the feasibility of geologic CO2 sequestration. Chemical analyses suggested a dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism underlying the CO2-water-rock interactions. The results of this study suggested that mineral dissolution, new mineral precipitation, and carbonic acid formation-dissociation are closely interrelated in CO2-water-rock interactions.
