Abstract:The high-redshift gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), GRBs 080913 and 090423, challenge the conventional GRB progenitor models by their short durations, typical for short GRBs, and their high energy releases, typical for long GRBs. Meanwhile, the GRB rate inferred from high-redshift GRBs also remarkably exceeds the prediction of the collapsar model, with an ordinary star formation history. We show that all these contradictions could be eliminated naturally, if we ascribe some high-redshift GRBs to electromagnetic bursts of superconducting cosmic strings. High-redshift GRBs could become a reasonable way to test the superconducting cosmic string model because the event rate of cosmic string bursts increases rapidly with increasing redshifts, whereas the collapsar rate decreases.

Abstract:Highly beamed, short-duration electromagnetic bursts could be produced by superconducting cosmic string (SCS) loops oscillating in cosmic magnetic fields. We demonstrated that the basic characteristics of SCS bursts such as the electromagnetic frequency and the energy release could be consistently exhibited in the recently discovered fast radio bursts (FRBs). Moreover, it is first showed that the redshift distribution of the FRBs can also be well accounted for by the SCS burst model. Such agreements between the FRBs and SCS bursts suggest that the FRBs could originate from SCS bursts and thus they could provide an effective probe to study SCSs. The obtained values of model parameters indicate that the loops generating the FRBs have a small length scale and they are mostly formed in the radiation-dominated cosmological epoch.
High-Energy Gamma-Ray Afterglows from Low-Luminosity Gamma-Ray Bursts

Abstract:The observations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) such as 980425, 031203 and 060218, with luminosities much lower than those of other classic bursts, lead to the definition of a new class of GRBs -- low-luminosity GRBs. The nature of the outflow responsible for them is not clear yet. Two scenarios have been suggested: one is the conventional relativistic outflow with initial Lorentz factor of order of $\Gamma_0\ga 10$ and the other is a trans-relativistic outflow with $\Gamma_0\simeq 1-2$. Here we compare the high energy gamma-ray afterglow emission from these two different models, taking into account both synchrotron self inverse-Compton scattering (SSC) and the external inverse-Compton scattering due to photons from the cooling supernova or hypernova envelope (SNIC). We find that the conventional relativistic outflow model predicts a relatively high gamma-ray flux from SSC at early times ($<10^4 {\rm s}$ for typical parameters) with a rapidly decaying light curve, while in the trans-relativistic outflow model, one would expect a much flatter light curve of high-energy gamma-ray emission at early times, which could be dominated by both the SSC emission and SNIC emission, depending on the properties of the underlying supernova and the shock parameter $\epsilon_e$ and $\epsilon_B$. The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope should be able to distinguish between the two models in the future.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The composition of relativistic outflows producing gamma-ray bursts is a long-standing open question. One of the main arguments in favour of magnetically dominated outflows is the absence of photospheric component in their broad-band time-resolved spectra, with such notable example as GRB 080916C. Here, we perform a time-resolved analysis of this burst and confirm the previous detection of an additional spectral component. We show that this subdominant component is consistent with the photosphere of ultrarelativistic baryonic outflow, deep in the coasting regime. We argue that, contrary to previous statements, the magnetic dominance of the outflow is not required for the interpretation of this GRB. Moreover, simultaneous detection of high-energy emission in its prompt phase requires departure from a one-zone emission model.

Gamma-ray Burst Afterglows from Cylindrical Jets in a Dense Environment

Abstract:It is widely accepted that many gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are produced by relativistic jets. Previous studies on the beaming effects in GRBs are mainly based on the conical geometry. However, some observations of the relativistic jets in radio galaxies, active galactic nuclei, and “micro-quasars” have shown that many of these outflows are cylindrical, but not conical. In this study, we assume that the jets that produce GRBs are cylindrical, and that the circum-burst environment is dense and optically thick. In the prompt burst phase, the strong X-ray emission can sublimate the circum-burst medium to form an optically thin channel, from which the optical photons are allowed to escape. As a result, the optical afterglows can be observed only for the observers who are positioned on the axes of jets. It is shown that the observed optical afterglows usually decay very rapidly (in the form of Sv oc t^v^l1 where p is the index of electron power-law distribution), due to the joint effect of the lateral expansion of the cylindrical jet and the absorption of optical photons by the dust outside the channel. Our model provides a possible explanation for the dark gamma-ray bursts.
Early Grb Afterglow Rebrightenings from Ring-Shaped Jets

Abstract:When a gamma-ray burst (GRB) jet does not coincide with the spin axis of the center engine, it may be a ring-shaped jet. Unlike a conical jet, the outflow of a ring-shaped jet is not a full cone, but a centrally hollowed ring. Assuming the line of sight is on the central symmetry axis of the hollow cone, early rebrightenings at a post-burst time of 10(2) - 10(4) s will be present in the afterglows. We show that the early rebrightenings observed in the afterglows of a few Swift GRBs can be well explained by this model.

Abstract:We study the dynamics of relativistic electromagnetic explosions as a possible mechanism for the production of Gamma-Ray Bursts. We propose that a rotating relativistic stellar-mass progenitor loses much of its spin energy in the form of an electromagnetically-dominated outflow. After the flow becomes optically thin, it forms a relativistically expanding, non-spherically symmetric magnetic bubble - a ''cold fireball''. We analyze the structure and dynamics of such a cavity in the force-free approximation. During relativistic expansion, most of the magnetic energy in the bubble is concentrated in a thin shell near its surface (contact discontinuity). We suggest that either the polar current or the shell currents become unstable to electromagnetic instabilities at a radius $\sim10^{16}$ cm. This leads to acceleration of pairs and causes the $\gamma$-ray emission. At a radius $\sim10^{17}$ cm, the momentum contained in the electromagnetic shell will have been largely transferred to the surrounding blast wave propagating into the circumstellar medium. Particles accelerated at the fluid shock may combine with electromagnetic field from the electromagnetic shell to produce the afterglow emission.

Abstract:Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most luminous electromagnetic explosions in the Universe, which emit up to 8.8×10^54 erg isotropic equivalent energy in the hard X-ray band. The high luminosity makes them detectable out to the largest distances yet explored in the Universe. GRBs, as bright beacons in the deep Universe, would be the ideal tool to probe the properties of high-redshift universe: including the cosmic expansion and dark energy, star formation rate, the reionization epoch and the metal enrichment history of the Universe. In this article, we review the luminosity correlations of GRBs, and implications for constraining the cosmological parameters and dark energy. Observations show that the progenitors of long GRBs are massive stars. So it is expected that long GRBs are tracers of star formation rate. We also review the high-redshift star formation rate derived from GRBs, and implications for the cosmic reionization history. The afterglows of GRBs generally have broken power-law spectra, so it is possible to extract intergalactic medium (IGM) absorption features. We also present the capability of high-redshift GRBs to probe the pre-galactic metal enrichment and the first stars.
Superconducting Cosmic String Loops As Sources for Fast Radio Bursts

Abstract:The cusp burst radiation of superconducting cosmic string (SCS) loops is thought to be a possible origin of observed fast radio bursts with the model-predicted radiation spectrum and the redshift- and energy-dependent event rate, we fit the observational redshift and energy distributions of 21 Parkes fast radio bursts and constrain the model parameters. It is found that the model can basically be consistent with the observations, if the current on the SCS loops has a present value of similar to 10(16) mu(9/10)(17) esu s(-1) and evolves with redshift as an empirical power law similar to(1+ z)(-1.3), where mu(17) = mu/10(17) gcm(-1) is the string tension. This current evolution may provide a clue to probe the evolution of the cosmic magnetic fields and the gathering of the SCS loops to galaxy clusters.
A CORRELATED STUDY OF OPTICAL AND X-RAY AFTERGLOWS OF GRBs

Abstract:We study an extensive sample of 87 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) for which there are well-sampled and simultaneous optical and X-ray light curves. We extract the cleanest possible signal of the afterglow component. and compare the temporal behaviors of the X-ray light. curve, observed by Swift XRT, and optical data, observed by UVOT and ground-based telescopes for each individual burst. Overall we find that 62% of the GRBs. are consistent with the standard afterglow model. When more advanced modeling is invoked, up to 91% of the bursts in our sample may be consistent with the external-shock model. A large fraction of these bursts are consistent with occurring in a constant interstellar density medium (61%) while only 39% of them occur in a wind-like medium. Only nine cases have afterglow light curves that exactly match the standard fireball model prediction, having a single power-law decay in both energy bands that are observed during their entire duration. In particular, for the bursts with chromatic behavior, additional model assumptions must be made over limited segments of the light curves in order for these bursts to fully agree with the external-shock model. Interestingly, for 54% of the X-ray and 40% of the optical band observations, the end of the shallow decay (t(similar to-0.5)) period coincides with the jet-break (t(similar to-p)) time, causing an abrupt change in decay slope. The fraction of the burst that is consistent with the external-shock model is independent of the observational epochs in the rest frame of GRBs. Moreover, no cases can be explained by the cooling frequency crossing the X-ray or optical band.
High-Energy Component of Grb 941017 Revisited and the Reverse-Shock Synchrotron Self-Compton Emission

Abstract:The different temporal behaviors of the high energy component and the hundreds of keV emission from GRB 941017 suggest that they come from different emission regions. The nearly constant flux of this high energy component is consistent with being produced in the region of the early external shock formed when the ejecta hit the surrounding medium. Here we show that the relatively hard spectrum of this component can be numerically modelled as the synchrotron self-Compton emission from external reverse shock when the ejecta is decelerated by a typical interstellar medium. Constraints on the parameters of the fireball, such as the initial Lorentz factor., the burst energy, and the magnetic field equipartition fraction are obtained. Very high initial Lorentz factor (n greater than or similar to 10(3)) inferred for this burst may explain the rarity of this kind of high-energy component in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Large GeV - TeV flux from the reverse shock is predicted for GRBs with high initial Lorentz factors.
Superconducting Cosmic Strings As Sources of Cosmological Fast Radio Bursts

Abstract:In this paper we calculate the radio burst signals from three kinds of structures of superconducting cosmic strings. By taking into account the observational factors including scattering and relativistic effects, we derive the event rate of radio bursts as a function of redshift with the theoretical parameters $G\mu $ and ${\mathcal {I}}$ of superconducting strings. Our analyses show that cusps and kinks may have noticeable contributions to the event rate and in most cases cusps would dominate the contribution, while the kink–kink collisions tend to have secondary effects. By fitting theoretical predictions with the normalized data of fast radio bursts, we for the first time constrain the parameter space of superconducting strings and report that the parameter space of $G\mu \sim [10^{-14}, 10^{-12}]$ and ${\mathcal {I}} \sim [10^{-1}, 10^{2}] ~ \mathrm {GeV}$ fit the observation well although the statistic significance is low due to the lack of observational data. Moreover, we derive two types of best fittings, with one being dominated by cusps with a redshift $z = 1.3$, and the other dominated by kinks at the range of the maximal event rate.

Abstract:The association of long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with star forming regions and the idea of massive stars as progenitors of GRBs are widely accepted. Because of their short lifetimes, it is very likely that massive stars are still embedded in dense molecular clouds when they give birth to GRBs. Stellar winds from GRB progenitors can create low-density bubbles with sizes and densities strongly depending on the initial ambient density. A boundary between the bubble and the dense molecular cloud must exist with the density at the boundary increasing from that of the bubble to that of the outer cloud. We have calculated the lightcurves of the afterglows in such environments with three regions: the stellar wind region, the boundary, and the molecular cloud. We show that the interaction between the cylindrical jet and the density boundary can result in a re-brightening of the afterglow occurring as early as 1 day after the GRB. We compare our models with the optical afterglows of GRB970508, GRB000301C, and GRB030226. We find that the values of our model parameters, including the radius of the wind bubble, the densities in the bubble and in the outer molecular cloud are within typical ranges.
A unifying view of Gamma Ray Burst Afterglows

Abstract:We selected a sample of 33 Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) detected by Swift, with known redshift and optical extinction at the host frame. For these, we constructed the de-absorbed and K-corrected X-ray and optical rest frame light curves. These are modelled as the sum of two components: emission from the forward shock due to the interaction of a fireball with the circum-burst medium and an additional component, treated in a completely phenomenological way. The latter can be identified, among other possibilities, as "late prompt" emission produced by a long lived central engine with mechanisms similar to those responsible for the production of the "standard" early prompt radiation. Apart from flares or re-brightenings, that we do not model, we find a good agreement with the data, despite of their complexity and diversity. Although based in part on a phenomenological model with a relatively large number of free parameters, we believe that our findings are a first step towards the construction of a more physical scenario. Our approach allows us to interpret the behaviour of the optical and X-ray afterglows in a coherent way, by a relatively simple scenario. Within this context it is possible to explain why sometimes no jet break is observed; why, even if a jet break is observed, it is often chromatic; why the steepening after the jet break time is often shallower than predicted. Finally, the decay slope of the late prompt emission after the shallow phase is found to be remarkably similar to the time profile expected by the accretion rate of fall-back material (i.e. proportional to t^{-5/3}), suggesting that this can be the reason why the central engine can be active for a long time.

Abstract:The isotropic diffuse γ-ray background (IGRB) serves as a fundamental probe of the evolution of the extreme Universe. Although various astrophysical sources have been proposed as potential contributors to the IGRB, the dominant population is still under debate. γ-ray bursts (GRBs) are among candidate contributors of IGRB, although they are not as frequently discussed as blazars or starburst galaxies. Recent observations of TeV emission from GRB afterglows have provided fresh insights into this subject. This work aims to investigate the potential contribution of GRB afterglows to the IGRB under the standard afterglow model. We carefully examine the influence of each microphysical parameter of the afterglow model on this contribution, with a particular emphasis on the significant role played by the initial kinematic energy. To determine the energy and quantify the contribution of GRB afterglow to IGRBs, we utilize the observed GRB afterglow energy emissions from the Swift X-ray Telescope and Fermi Large Area Telescope instruments. Our calculations, considering the synchrotron self-Compton emission, suggest that GRB afterglows make up less than 10% of the IGRBs. To enhance the precision of our findings, it is crucial to further constrain these parameters by conducting additional ground-based observations of GRB afterglows.

Abstract:Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), which have isotropic energy up to 10^54 erg, would be the ideal tool to study the properties of early universe: including dark energy, star formation rate, and the metal enrichment history of the Universe. We will briefly review the progress on the field of GRB cosmology. Meanwhile, X-ray flares, which may have important clues to the central engine, are common phenomena in the GRB afterglows. We present statistical results of X-ray flares, i.e., energy, duration time and waiting time distributions, and compare the results with solar flares. The similarity between the two kinds of flares are found, which may indicates that the physical mechanism of GRB X-ray flares is magnetic reconnection.

Abstract:We investigate whether the circum-burst environment constrained by the absorption feature of GRB990705 could be consistent with the observed H-band afterglow. Two possible geometries of the afterglow-emitting regions are suggested: 1) afterglow emission produced by the impact of the fireball on the surrounding torus; 2)afterglow emission produced in the dense circum-burst medium inside the torus. In case 1), the faster decay at later time is attributed to the disappearance of the shock due to the counter-pressure in the hot torus illuminated by the burst and afterglow photons. For case 2), the circum-burst medium density is found to be very high (n ≳ 104 − 105cm−3).
