Abstract:Upon shearing a microscale lithographically defined graphite mesa, the sheared section retracts spontaneously to minimize interface energy. Here, we demonstrate a sixfold symmetry of the self-retraction and provide a first experimental estimate of the frictional force involved, as direct evidence that the self-retraction is due to superlubricity, where ultralow friction occurs between incommensurate surfaces. The effect is remarkable because it occurs reproducibly under ambient conditions and over a contact area of up to 10×10 μm2, more than 7 orders of magnitude larger than previous scanning-probe-based studies of superlubricity in graphite. By analyzing the sheared interface, we show how the grain structure of highly oriented pyrolitic graphite determines the probability of self-retraction. Our results demonstrate that such self-retraction provides a novel probe of superlubricity, and the robustness of the phenomenon opens the way for practical applications of superlubricity in micromechanical systems.
Observation of Normal Force-Independent Superlubricity in Mesoscopic Graphite Contacts

Abstract:We investigate the dependence of friction forces on normal load in incommensurate micrometer-size contacts between atomically smooth single-crystal graphite surfaces under ambient conditions. Our experimental results show that these contacts exhibit superlubricity (superlow friction), which is robust against the application of normal load. The measured friction coefficients are essentially zero and independent of the external normal load up to the maximum pressure of our experiment, 1.67 MPa. The observation of load-independent superlubricity in microscale contacts is a promising result for numerous practical applications.

Abstract:Recent experiments on microscopic graphite mesas demonstrate reproducible high-speed microscale superlubricity, even under ambient conditions. Here, we explore the same phenomenon on the nanoscale, by studying a graphene flake sliding on a graphite substrate, using molecular dynamics. We show that superlubricity is punctuated by high-friction transients as the flake rotates through successive crystallographic alignments with the substrate. Further, we introduce two novel routes to suppress frictional scattering and achieve persistent superlubricity. We use graphitic nanoribbons to eliminate frictional scattering by constraining the flake rotation, an approach we call frictional waveguides . We can also effectively suppress frictional scattering by biaxial stretching of the graphitic substrate. These new routes to persistent superlubricity at the nanoscale may guide the design of ultra-low dissipation nanomechanical devices.

Abstract:Superlubricity of graphite and graphene has aroused increasing interest in recent years. Yet how to obtain a long-lasting superlubricity between graphene layers, under high applied normal load in ambient atmosphere still remains a challenge but is highly desirable. Here, we report a direct measurement of sliding friction between graphene and graphene, and graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) under high contact pressures by employing graphene-coated microsphere (GMS) probe prepared by metal-catalyst-free chemical vapour deposition. The exceptionally low and robust friction coefficient of 0.003 is accomplished under local asperity contact pressure up to 1 GPa, at arbitrary relative surface rotation angles, which is insensitive to relative humidity up to 51% RH. This ultralow friction is attributed to the sustainable overall incommensurability due to the multi-asperity contact covered with randomly oriented graphene nanograins. This realization of microscale superlubricity can be extended to the sliding between a variety of two-dimensional (2D) layers.
Robust Microscale Structural Superlubricity Between Graphite and Nanostructured Surface

Abstract:Structural superlubricity is a state of nearly zero friction and no wear between two contacted solid surfaces. However, such state has a certain probability of failure due to the edge defects of graphite flake. Here, we achieve robust structural superlubricity state between microscale graphite flakes and nanostructured silicon surfaces under ambient condition. We find that the friction is always less than 1 μN, the differential friction coefficient is on the order of 10-4, without observable wear. This is attributed to the edge warping of graphite flake on the nanostructured surface under concentrated force, which eliminate the edge interaction between the graphite flake and the substrate. This study not only challenges the traditional understanding in tribology and structural superlubricity that rougher surfaces lead to higher friction and lead to wear, thereby reducing roughness requirements, but also demonstrates that a graphite flake with a single crystal surface that does not come into edge contact with the substrate can consistently achieve robust structural superlubricity state with any non-van der Waals material in atmospheric conditions. Additionally, the study provides a general surface modification method that enables the widespread application of structural superlubricity technology in atmospheric environments.
Structural Superlubricity In Graphite Flakes Assembled Under Ambient Conditions

Abstract:To date, structural superlubricity in microscale contacts is mostly observed in intrinsic graphite flakes that are cleaved by shearing from HOPG mesas in situ or friction pairs assembled in vacuum due to the high requirement of ultra clean interface for superlubricity, which severely limits their practical applications. Herein, we report observations on microscale structural superlubricity in graphite flake pairs assembled under ambient conditions, where contaminants are inevitably present at the interfaces. For such friction pairs, we find a novel running-in phenomenon, where the friction decreases with reciprocating motions, but no morphological or chemical changes can be observed. The underlying mechanism for the new running-in process is revealed to be the removal of third bodies confined between the surfaces. Our results improve the understanding of microscale superlubricity and may help extend the practical applications of superlubricity.

Abstract:Recently, macroscopic superlubricity has been realized by forming spherical geometries at a sliding interface to cause nanoscopic point contact. Here, we showed macroscopic superlubricity (similar to 0.005) enhanced by graphene nanoscrolls, which were formed at the sliding interface of a tribological pair composed of graphite-like and fullerene-like hydrogenated carbon films.

Abstract:Superlubricity of layered materials, such as graphite, boron nitride, and molybdenum disulfide, is easy to achieve at the nano- or microscale by the formation of ideal incommensurate contact, but it has never been observed at the macroscale due to the size limitations of the contact zone. In the present study, the instantaneous superlubricity of graphite against steel was achieved at the macroscale, through the formation of many tribo-transferred multilayer graphene nanoflakes (MGNFs) on the steel contact zone after the initial sliding. The friction coefficient could reduce to a minimum of 0.001, which randomly appeared as the test progressed, with a maximal sliding distance of 131 mu m. The macroscale superlubricity was derived from the statistical frictional forces of multiple transferred MGNFs (in the contact zone) sliding on the graphite with atomic steps. This finding provides a possible approach to achieving the macroscale superlubricity of layered materials by the discretization of a large contact area into multiple, dispersed nanoflake contacts. Characterization of a Microscale Superlubric Graphite Interface

Abstract:Direct characterizations of the two component surfaces of a solid-solid interface are essential for understanding its various interfacial mechanical, physical, and electrical behaviors. Particularly, the fascinating phenomenon termed structural superlubricity, a state of nearly zero friction and wear, is sensitively dependent on the interface structure. Here we report a controllable pick-and-flip technique to separate a microscale contact pair for the characterization of its two component surfaces for van der Waals layered materials. With this technique, the interface of a graphite superlubric contact is characterized with resolution from microscale down to the atomic level. Imaging of the graphite lattice provides direct proof that this superlubric interface consists of two monocrystalline surfaces incommensurate with each other. More importantly, the structure-property relationship for this contact is investigated. Friction measurements combined with fully atomistic molecular dynamics reveal that internal structures [internals steps, pits, and bulges buried underneath the topmost graphene sheet(s)] have negligible contribution to the total friction; in contrast, external defects lead to a high friction. These results help us to better understand the structure of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite and the fundamental mechanisms of structural superlubricity, as well as to guide the design of superlubricity-based devices.
Superlubricity of Graphite Sliding Against Graphene Nanoflake under Ultrahigh Contact Pressure.

Abstract:Superlubricity of graphite sliding against graphene can be easily attained at the nanoscale when it forms the incommensurate contact under a low contact pressure. However, the achievement of superlubricity under an ultrahigh contact pressure (>1 GPa), which has more applications in the lubrication of micromachine and nanomachine, remains unclear. Here, this problem is addressed and the robust superlubricity of graphite is obtained under ultrahigh contact pressures of up to 2.52 GPa, by the formation of transferred graphene nanoflakes on a silicon tip. The friction coefficient becomes as low as 0.0003, a state that is attributed to the extremely low shear strength of the graphene/graphite interface in the incommensurate contact. When the pressure exceeds some threshold, the superlubricity state collapses suddenly with the friction coefficient increasing ≈10 times. The failure of superlubricity originates from the delamination of the topmost graphene layers on graphite under ultrahigh contact pressures, which requires the tip to provide additional exfoliation energies during the sliding process. The results demonstrate that the superlubricity of graphite sliding against graphene can exist stably under ultrahigh contact pressure, which would appear to accelerate its application in nanoscale lubrication.
Towards a deeper understanding of superlubricity on graphite governed by interfacial adhesion

Abstract:Graphite or graphene due to its excellent tribological properties is highly expected in solid lubrications, where the friction behaviors are intimately related to interfacial adhesion; however, the fundamental mechanism governing their correlation remains scientifically intriguing and largely unexplored. Through the combination of atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we demonstrated that the friction of graphite surface slid against various AFM probes is generally enlarged with stronger adhesive interaction due to the higher interfacial charge density. The correlation between friction and adhesion mainly originates from the sliding induced charge evolution which governs the energy dissipation of solid lubrication between graphite and bulk materials. A general strategy that suppresses charge flowed into contact region enables the superlubricity of graphene or graphite surface owing to the feeble adhesion of the sliding systems. It is thereby proposed that the superlubricity is generally favored by weak interaction of the sliding interfaces.

Abstract:Graphite has been conventionally believed to exhibit an inferior lubricating performance with significantly larger friction coefficient and wear rate in a vacuum environment than in ambient air. Dangling bonds at the edge planes of graphite, accounting for the high friction in inert atmosphere are saturated by chemisorbed vapor molecules in air, which contributes to low surface adhesion and low friction. However, there is still a lack of direct experimental evidence whether basal planes of graphite excluding the negative effects of edges or dangling bonds shows intrinsic lubricity when sliding under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions. By the interlayer friction measurement enabled by graphite flake-wrapped atomic force microscope tips in UHV, we show a record-low friction coefficient of 4 × 10<sup>–5</sup> (slope of friction vs normal force curve) when sliding between graphite layers, which is much lower than that in ambient air. This discrepancy manifests the intrinsic sliding frictional behavior between the graphite basal planes when the tribo-materials and experimental conditions are well-designed and strictly controlled. Graphite superlubricity enabled by triboinduced nanocontacts

Abstract:Colloidal probe Atomic Force Microscopy allows to explore sliding states of vanishing friction, i.e. superlubricity, in mesoscopic graphite contacts. Superlubricity is known to appear upon formation of a triboinduced transfer layer, originated by material transfer of graphene flakes from the graphitic substrate to the colloidal probe. Previous studies suggest that friction vanishes due to crystalline incommensurability at the newly formed interface. However this picture still lacks several details, such as the roles of the tribolayer roughness and of loading conditions. Hereafter we gain deeper insight into the tribological response of micrometric silica beads sliding on graphite under ambient conditions. We show that the tribotransferred flakes behave as lubricious nanoasperities with a twofold role. First, they decrease the silica-graphite true contact area, in fact causing a breakdown of adhesion and friction by one order of magnitude. Second, they govern mechanical dissipation through the specific energy landscape experienced by the topographically-highest triboinduced nanoasperity. Remarkably, such contact junctions can undergo a load-driven atomic-scale transition from continuous superlubric sliding to dissipative stick-slip, that agrees with the single-asperity Prandtl-Tomlinson model. Superlubricity in mesoscopic silica-graphite junctions may therefore arise from the load-controlled competition between interfacial crystalline incommensurability and contact pinning effects at one dominant nanoasperity.

Abstract:More than thirty years ago, it was theoretically predicted that friction for incommensurate contacts between atomically smooth, infinite, crystalline materials (e.g., graphite, MoS_{2}) is vanishing in the low speed limit, and this corresponding state was called structural superlubricity (SSL). However, experimental validation of this prediction has met challenges, since real contacts always have a finite size, and the overall friction arises not only from the atoms located within the contact area, but also from those at the contact edges which can contribute a finite amount of friction even when the incommensurate area does not. Here, we report, using a novel method, the decoupling of these contributions for the first time. The results obtained from nanoscale to microscale incommensurate contacts of graphite under ambient conditions verify that the average frictional contribution of an inner atom is no more than 10^{-4} that of an atom at the edge. Correspondingly, the total friction force is dominated by friction between the contact edges for contacts up to 10 μm in lateral size. We discuss the physical mechanisms of friction observed in SSL contacts, and provide guidelines for the rational design of large-scale SSL contacts.

The nature of edge pinning and vanishing friction in microscale structural superlubric graphite contact

Abstract:Abstract Structural superlubricity (SSL), a state of ultralow friction and no wear between two solid surfaces in contact, offers a fundamental solution for reducing friction and wear. Recent studies find that the edge pinning of SSL contact dominates the friction. However, its nature remains mysterious due to the lack of direct characterizations on atomic scale, especially for graphite, one of the most widely used materials for SSL. Here, for microscale graphite mesa, with detailed characterizations using atomic force microscopy, friction force microscopy, focused ion beam, high-resolution transmission electron microscope, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we unambiguously reveal the atomic structure and chemical composition of the disordered edge. The friction stress for each contact condition, namely, edge/edge, edge/surface, and surface/surface contacts are quantified, with the ratio being 10 4 :10 3 :1. The mechanism is revealed by full-atomic molecular dynamic simulations, which reproduce the measured friction quantitatively. Inspired by such understanding, through fabricating Si x N y caps with tensile stress, we further eliminate the friction caused by the edges through disengaging the edges from the substrate. As a result, an SSL contact with ultralow friction stress of 0.1 kPa or lower is achieved directly. Such a vanishing friction is 1-2 orders lower than all the values ever reported and approaches the theoretical limit of friction for structural superlubric contact.
Macroscale, Humidity-Insensitive, and Stable Structural Superlubricity Achieved with Hydrogen-Free Graphene Nanoflakes

Abstract:Achieving solid superlubricity in high-humidity environments is of great practical importance yet remains challenging nowadays, due to the complex physicochemical roles of water and concomitant oxidation on solid surfaces. Here we report a facile way to access humidity-insensitive solid superlubricity (coefficient of friction 0.0035) without detectable wear and running-in at a humidity range of 2-80%. Inspired by the concept of structural superlubricity, this is achieved between Au-capped microscale graphite flake and graphene nanoflake-covered hydrogen-free amorphous carbon (GNC a-C). Such GNC a-C exhibits reduced pinning effects of water molecules and weak oxidation, which demonstrates stable structural superlubricity even after air exposure of the surfaces for 365 days. The manufacturability of such design enables the macroscopic scale-up of structural superlubricity, achieving the leap from 4 mu m x 4 mu m contact to 3 mm ball-supported contact with a wide range of materials. Our results suggest a strategy for the macroscale application of structural superlubricity under ambient condition. Grain boundary hardening and precipitation hardening are important mechanisms for enhancing the strength of metals. Here, these two effects are amplified simultaneously, by adding a suitable alloying element, leading to near-theoretical strength.
Interlayer Motion and Ultra-Low Sliding Friction in Microscale Graphite Flakes

Abstract:The interlayer friction force of incommensurate graphite is a key material parameter to understand the mechanism of superlubricity and the unexpected properties of carbon-based materials; however, its determination by direct experiments under different ambient temperatures and sliding velocities is yet to be reported. In this letter, we report the direct, accurate experimental measurement of the of microscale incommensurate graphite. The measured per unit area, in ambient laboratory conditions, decreases with increasing temperature , exhibits a logarithmic increase with respect to sliding velocities and remains almost unchanged under various twist angles. At elevated temperatures, can be lower than the resolution of the force sensor, which corresponds to per unit area. This is the lowest value reported for lamellar materials. These experimental measurements assist in understanding the mechanism of microscale superlubricity and such an ultra-low friction force will also introduce a wide range of applications in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS).
Charge-induced ultralow friction between graphite and atomically flat surfaces

Abstract:Reaching near-zero friction is one of the jewels on the crown of tribology, and structural superlubricity is a crucial mechanism to achieve it. Previous works focus mainly on the structural superlubricity at incommensurate crystalline interfaces. However, realizing such interfaces on a large scale without defects and contaminations is a formidable challenge. Here, we report a charge-induced robust macroscale superlubricity between graphite and atomically flat surfaces in the ambient condition. We transferred graphite flakes on Si3N4 balls and used them to measure the friction properties on pristine and charged atomically flat surfaces such as 300 nm SiO2/Si and sapphire. We found that the surface charge can dramatically reduce the coefficient of friction between graphite and substrates by two orders of magnitude to 10−4, and the sliding is wearless even under harsh contact conditions (∼1.1 GPa center pressure and >100 m). We demonstrate that the surface charge is critical in achieving superlubricity possibly because it can reduce adhesion between graphite and substrate surfaces and make the substrate surfaces resistant to contaminations. Our method offers a ready-to-use solution to superlubricity alternative to achieve incommensurate crystalline interfaces. Thus, it can reduce the difficulty of realizing macroscale superlubricity for applications.

Abstract:Wear-free sliding between two contacted solid surfaces is the ultimate goal in the effort to extend the lifetime of mechanical devices,especially when it comes to inventing new types of micro-electromechanical systems where wear is often a major obstacle.Here we report experimental observations of wear-free sliding for a micrometer-sized graphite flake on a diamond-like-carbon (DLC) surface under ambient conditions with speeds up to 2.5 m/s,and over a distance of 100 km.The coefficient of friction (COF) between the microscale graphite flake,a van der Waals (vdW) layered material and DLC,a non-vdW-layered material,is measured to be of the order of 10-3,which belongs to the superlubric regime.Such ultra-low COFs are also demonstrated for a microscale graphite flake sliding on six other kinds of non-vdW-layered materials with sub-nanometer roughness.With a synergistic analysis approach,we reveal the underlying mechanism to be the combination ofinterfacial vdW interaction,atomic-smooth interfaces and the low normal stiffness of the graphite flake.These features guarantee a persistent full contact of the interface with weak interaction,which contributes to the ultra-low COFs.Together with the extremely high in-plane strength ofgraphene,wear-free sliding is achieved.Our results broaden the scope of superlubricity and promote its wider application in the future.
