Abstract:Identification of the catalytic active site is critical in the design and development of advanced heterogeneous catalysts. Many high-precision experimental techniques, as well as computational methods, have been developed to address this problem, but identifying the active site for composite oxide catalysts remains a challenging task because of their complexity and indiscernible microstructures. Herein, we provide a key new insight into the active site within a composite oxide catalyst by investigating an iron-based oxide catalyst with complex components. The dopant atoms with octahedral coordination located at substitution sites in the Fe2O3 lattice tune the electronic structure of the adjacent iron atoms, which act as the active sites that lead to enhanced catalytic activity. This atomic-scale doping is different from the emerging single-atom catalyst concept, in which the single atom on the support is the active site, and which provides an alternative methodology of improving the activity of heterogeneous catalysts with maximized heteroatom efficiency.

Abstract:Engineering sites of supported metal catalysts is essential to enhancing activity and selectivity. Such enhancement is typically achieved by particle size modification, surface alloying, or attaching molecular ligands. Yet, control strategies for complex, multifunctional molecules and catalysts, where selectivity is crucial, are lacking. Here, we demonstrate that submonolayer WOx with tunable coverage preferentially decorates well-coordinated Pt terrace sites as a stable ligand. By combining experimental kinetics with probe molecules, in situ spectroscopies, and first-principles modeling, we show that the WOx coverage on Pt modifies the metal-to-acid site balance while retaining the acid strength intact and results in optimal reactivity for metal-acid catalyzed reactions at a specific metal, size, and support-dependent WOx coverage. The oxide can also alter the reactant adsorption mode, reversing selectivity and pathways from terrace- to step-dominated, as evidenced in furfural decarbonylation and hydrogenation. The insights open avenues for improving metal/metal oxide catalysts beyond the specific system.

Abstract:Active sites play an essential role in heterogeneous catalysis and largely determine the reaction properties. Yet identification and study of the active sites remain challenging owing to their dynamic behaviors during catalysis process and issues with current characterization techniques. This article provides a short review of research progresses in active sites of metal and metal oxide catalysts, which covers the past achievements, current research status, and perspectives in this research field. In particular, the concepts and theories of active sites are introduced. Major experimental and computational approaches that are used in active site study are summarized, with their applications and limitations being discussed. An outlook of future research direction in both experimental and computational catalysis research is provided.

Abstract:The evolution of model catalyst systems has experienced single-crystal surfaces of different transition metals and different crystal faces, two-dimensional systems with nanoparticles (NPs) deposited on a flat support surface, and three-dimensional systems with NPs loaded into the high-surface-area supports such as ordered mesoporous materials. The latter two systems mimic the nanoparticle properties in industrial catalysts. Ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) materials play unparalleled roles in catalysis, energy storage, adsorption, chromatographic separation, etc. because of their distinctive structure which allows Knudsen diffusion inside mesopores, the dispersion of loaded metals and oxides, and the embedment of metals inside pore walls. In this review, the synthesis routes of OMC-supported metal or metal oxide catalysts, including hard-templating and soft-templating methods, are briefly introduced. Mass transfer inside the mesopores, reactant chemisorption on the metals, discrimination of the different active species, and the catalytic reaction mechanism of the OMC-supported metal or metal oxide catalysts are systemically summarized, with the highlight of advantages in catalysis occurring inside mesopores. Understanding these molecular-dominated factors provides insight into controlling the highly active and selective catalytic reactions and, therefore, the design of industrial catalysts with a long life.

Abstract:The metal-support interaction is one of the most important pillars in heterogeneous catalysis, but developing a fundamental theory has been challenging because of the intricate interfaces. Based on experimental ‎data, interpretable machine learning, theoretical derivation, and first-principles simulations, we established a ‎general theory of metal-oxide interactions grounded in ‎metal-metal and metal-oxygen interactions. The theory applies to metal nanoparticles and atoms on oxide supports and oxide films on metal supports. We found that for late-transition metal catalysts, metal-metal interactions dominated the oxide support effects and suboxide encapsulation over metal nanoparticles. A principle of strong metal-metal interactions for encapsulation occurrence is formulated and substantiated by extensive ‎experiments including 10 metals and 16 ‎oxides. The valuable insights revealed on (strong) metal-support interaction advance the interfacial design of supported metal catalysts.

Abstract:Metal nanoparticles (NPs) supported on porous materials have shown great advantages in many catalytic application fields. Supported metal NPs are receiving extensive attention due to their significant contribution in a wide range of current and future applications, and this is arguably one of the fastest growing research fields. In this review, we highlight various types of metal catalysts that possess great potential in several catalytic reactions. The major focus has been on metal oxides, nanoporous metals and metal NPs supported on metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and zeolites. Special attention has been given to the synthesis strategies and application of the NPs supported on MOFs and zeolites, which are considered highly interesting and rapidly expanding areas in heterogeneous catalysis. Finally, the prospects of these catalysts have been included in the concluding remarks.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Catalysis plays an important role in the modern chemical industry, and developing catalyst with high efficiency is one of the important targets in catalysis research. Due to the outstanding activity of those catalysts with strong metal-support interactions ( SMSI), SMSI has become an important scientific topic in catalysis research. The SMSI phenomenon involves the encapsulation of the metal nanoparticles ( NPs) by support, resulting in the improved stabilization of NPs, and the different catalytic performances due to the new interaction between NPs and the support. Currently, a great number of catalysts with SMSI have been designed and partially applied, also there are considerable literatures focusing on SMSI of supported catalysts, especially those using metal oxide for support. However due to the complexity, the nature of SMSI and the catalytic mechanism of SMSI deserve further study, and the argument about the driving force of SMSI formation still exists. This review summarizes the recent progress, effect, and the regulation of SMSI, hopefully providing the understanding of SMSI from the perspective of condensed matter chemistry, and a new strategy of catalyst design.

Abstract:For heterogeneous catalysis, the metal catalysts supported on reducible metal oxides, especially CeO2 and TiO2, have long been a research focus because of their excellent catalytic performance in a variety of catalytic reactions. Detailed understanding of the promotion effect of reducible metal oxides on catalytic reactions is beneficial to the rational design of new catalysts. The important catalytic roles of reducible metal oxides are attributed to their intimate interactions with the supported metals (e.g., strong metal-support interaction, electronic metal-support interaction) and unique support structures (e.g., oxygen vacancy, reversible valence change, surface hydroxyl). However, the structures of the catalysts and reaction mechanisms are strongly affected by environmental conditions. For this reason, in situ/operando spectroscopy studies under working conditions are necessary to obtain accurate information about the structure-activity relationship. In this review, the recent applications of the in situ/operando spectroscopy methodology on metal catalysts with reducible metal oxides as supports are summarized.

Abstract:Developing efficient and low-cost defective carbon-based catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is essential to metal-air batteries and fuel cells. Active sites engineering toward these catalysts is highly desirable but challenging to realize boosted catalytic performance. Herein, a sandwich-like confinement route to achieve the controllable regulation of active sites for carbon-based catalysts is reported. In particular, three distinct catalysts including metal-free N-doped carbon (NC), single Co atoms dispersed NC (Co-N-C), and Co nanoparticles-contained Co-N-C (Co/Co-N-C) are controllably realized and clearly identified by synchrotron radiation-based X-ray spectroscopy. Electrochemical measurements suggest that the Co/Co-N-C catalyst delivers optimized ORR performance due to the rich Co-Nx active sites and their synergistic effect with metallic Co nanoparticles. This work provides deep insight for rationally designing efficient ORR catalyst based on active sites engineering.

Abstract:The synergetic effect in multicomponent catalysts is a topic of profound industrial importance and intense academic interest. On a newly identified multicomponent catalyst, Au/IrO(2)/TiO(2), first-principles density-functional theory is analyzed to clarify the outstanding catalytic activity of the system for oxidative reactions at high temperatures. By comparing CO oxidation on interfaces and single-component surfaces, it is revealed that a high dispersion of a more active oxide (IrO2), on a more inert oxide (TiO2) is the key. It preserves the sintering resistance of Au supported on less active oxides, while at the same time promoting oxidative reactions that occur at the Au/active-oxide interface.

Abstract:To identify the intrinsic active sites in oxides or oxide supported catalysts is a research frontier in the fields of heterogeneous catalysis and material science. In particular, the role of oxygen vacancies on the redox properties of oxide catalysts is still not fully understood. Herein, some relevant research dealing with M1–O–M2 or M1–□–M2 linkages as active sites in mixed oxides, in oxide supported single‐atom catalysts, and at metal/oxide interfaces of oxide supported nanometal catalysts for various reaction systems is reviewed. It is found that the catalytic activity of these oxides not only depends on the amounts of oxygen vacancies and metastable cations but also shows a significant influence from the local environment of the active sites, in particular, the symmetry of the oxygen vacancies. Based on the recent progress in the relevant fields, an "asymmetric oxygen vacancy site" is introduced, which indicates an oxygen vacancy with an asymmetric coordination of cations, making oxygen "easy come, easy go," i.e., more reactive in redox reactions. The establishment of this new mechanism would shed light on the future investigation of the intrinsic active sites in oxide and oxide supported catalysts.

Abstract:The source of activity of metal/metal oxides has always been an interesting, important but highly challenging research topic in heterogeneous catalysis. In CO oxidation reaction, this work clarifies dispersion and support dictated activities of Pt including single-atom (Pt1), 2.8 nm (PtNP-S) and 36 nm (PtNP-L) Pt supported on both reducible TiO2 and “inert” Al2O3 supports. The X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) shows that chemical state of Pt is affected by both dispersion and support: Pt1 presents fully oxidized state in both Pt1/TiO2 and Pt1/Al2O3; PtNP-S in PtNP-S/TiO2 appear nearly oxidized state while about half of Pt is metallic state in PtNP-S/Al2O3; PtNP-L in both PtNP-L/TiO2 and PtNP-L/Al2O3 exhibit metallic state. All the Pt species supported on TiO2 present much lower apparent activation barriers (Eapp) than that on Al2O3. Moreover, Pt1/TiO2 possesses dozen times of efficiency than PtNP-S/TiO2 although they have similar Eapp values. A truth is finally made clear that a reducible metal oxide with low oxygen vacancy formation energy is critical to endow Pt/metal oxide a high activity and the single-atom dispersion of Pt is the way to maximize the active sites of Pt/metal oxide.

Abstract:This review summarizes the strategies for modulating the active sites of MOF‐derived catalysts by adjusting the electronic structure and extensively investigates the reaction mechanisms of ORR and OER in the charging and discharging processes of metal‐air batteries. Comprehensive Summary The electrochemical processes of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) play a crucial role in various energy storage and conversion systems. However, the inherently slow kinetics of reversible oxygen reactions present an urgent demand for the development of efficient oxygen electrocatalysts. Recently, metal‐organic framework (MOF) derivatives have attracted extensive attention in electrocatalysis research due to their unique porous structure, abundant active sites, and tunable structural properties. Especially, the optimization of the electronic structure of active sites in MOF derivatives has been proven as an effective strategy to enhance the catalytic activity. In this review, we provide an overview of the electronic structure optimization strategies for active sites in MOF derivatives as advanced catalysts in various O—O bond activation reactions, including the construction of synergistic effects between multiple sites, the development of heterogeneous interfaces, the utilization of metal support interactions, and the precise modulation of organic ligands surrounding catalytic active sites at the atomic level. Furthermore, this review offers theoretical insights into the oxygen activation and catalytic mechanisms of MOF derivatives, as well as the identification of active sites. Finally, the potential challenges and prospects of MOF derivatives in electrocatalysis are discussed. Abstract:Abstract Nonnoble metal catalysts are low-cost alternatives to Pt for the oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs), which have been studied for various applications in electrocatalytic systems. Among them, transition metal complexes, characterized by a redox-active single-metal-atom with biomimetic ligands, such as pyrolyzed cobalt–nitrogen–carbon (Co–N x /C), have attracted considerable attention. Therefore, we reported the ORR mechanism of pyrolyzed Vitamin B12 using operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy coupled with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, which enables operando monitoring of the oxygen binding site on the metal center. Our results revealed the preferential adsorption of oxygen at the Co 2+ center, with end-on coordination forming a Co 2+ -oxo species. Furthermore, the charge transfer mechanism between the catalyst and reactant enables further Co–O species formation. These experimental findings, corroborated with first-principle calculations, provide insight into metal active-site geometry and structural evolution during ORR, which could be used for developing material design strategies for high-performance electrocatalysts for fuel cell applications.

Real-space observation of strong metal-support interaction: state-of-the-art and what's the next

Abstract:The real-space resolving of the encapsulated overlayer in the well-known model and industry catalysts, ascribed to the advent of dedicated transmission electron microscopy, enables us to probe novel nano/micro architecture chemistry for better application, revisiting our understanding of this key issue in heterogeneous catalysis. In this review, we summarize the latest progress of real-space observation of SMSI in several well-known systems mainly covered from the metal catalysts (mostly Pt) supported by the TiO2 , CeO2 and Fe3 O4 . As a comparison with the model catalyst Pt/Fe3 O4 , the industrial catalyst Cu/ZnO is also listed, followed with the suggested ongoing directions in the field.

Abstract:Metal atoms dispersed on the oxide supports constitute a large category of single-atom catalysts. In this review, oxide supported single-atom catalysts are discussed about their synthetic procedures, characterizations, and reaction mechanism in thermocatalysis, such as water–gas shift reaction, selective oxidation/hydrogenation, and coupling reactions. Some typical oxide materials, including ferric oxide, cerium oxide, titanium dioxide, aluminum oxide, and so on, are intentionally mentioned for the unique roles as supports in anchoring metal atoms and taking part in the catalytic reactions. The interactions between metal atoms and oxide supports are summarized to give a picture on how to stabilize the atomic metal centers, and rationally tune the geometric structures and electronic states of single atoms. Furthermore, several directions in fabricating single-atom catalysts with improved performance are proposed on the basis of state-of-the-art understanding in metal-oxide interactions.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
