Abstract:This paper presents a class of compact narrow/wide band branch-line couplers with improved upper-stopband. Firstly, by analyzing stub-loaded transmission lines, it is found that the stub-loaded transmission line with a smaller size can be used to equivalently substitute the quarter-wavelength transmission line in the traditional branch-line coupler. As a result, the size of the branch-line coupler is significantly reduced. Furthermore, due to the transmission zero introduced by the open stub, the upper stopband is extended. Therefore a compact narrowband branch-line coupler with harmonic suppression can be realized. To validate the idea, the equivalent circuit model is developed, analytical closed-form equations are derived, and circuit simulation results are plotted for the analysis. Secondly, by adopting quarter-wavelength open-circuited coupled-lines at each port, a compact filtering wideband branch-line coupler with extended upper-stopband can be realized. Finally, the proposed couplers are fabricated to verify the design principles experimentally.
