Abstract:From the three-parameter Zipf model on city-size distribution, P(r)=C(r-α) -dz, which is based on the generalized Beckmann-Davis models, P m=P 1λ 1-m, f m=f 1δ m-1, and the allometric model of the urban area-population relationship is derived as, A(r)=aP(r)b, a three-parameter Zipf-type model on urban area distributions, A(r)=K(r-α) -d, where m is the order of cities in a city hierarchy, r is the rank of a city, P(r) is the population of the rth city, P m is the average (population) size of the mth order cities, C, α, dz, P 1, f 1, a, b, K, and d are all parameters. The new model on urban area as a kind of distribution can be reduced to a pair of geometrical series, i.e., A m=A 1γ 1-m, f m=f 1δ m-1, where A m is the average area of the cities of the mth order, A 1 is a parameter. Defining the total area and population of a system of cities as A s=∑A(r), P s=∑A(r), an equation yields as yields A s(t)=a sP s(t) b s, where a s is the proportionality coefficient, b s is the scale factor. Its found that if λ≤δ, and γ≤δ, namely, the fractal dimension of city-size distribution D=lnδ/lnλ≥1, then b s=1; otherwise, there gets b s=(d-1)/(dz-1). Taking the cities and the system of cities of Henan province, China, as example, the theoretical result deduced in the paper is demonstrated and verified successfully.
