Abstract:In this paper, an unique soundscape concept in Chinese classical garden is explicated from theory and praxis levers, which is based on the traditional “Harmony” culture, with the philosophical background of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism, and the character of the aesthetic refining and gardening construction experience together up. The general aim of which is creating a artistic conception with nature aesthetics and poetic culture to conduct people's life to archive the highest state. This paper firstly introduces the formation and development of the concept of Chinese classical garden soundscape, and its related social and cultural reasons are investigated as well. And then, the technical logic contained in garden construction rules are sorted out. So the unique characteristic of soundscape theory and praxis in Chinese classical garden are explicated. Abstract:Soundscape is a new interdisciplinary field of landscape and acoustics. This paper is intended to study the relationship between soundscape and culture. That is, the Chinese culture's pursuit of acoustic beauty from three aspects as poetries, writings and drawings. It is demonstrated by the case study of soundscape in West Lake scenic area, with particular emphasis on humane attribute. The study has approached by three steps as classification - case study - promotion to region. The major attractions of West Lake scenic area is divided into natural and artificial categories, and the typical cases selected are Orioles Singing in the Willows and Evening Bell Ringing at Nanping hill. The two cases are analyzed from two aspects as the cultural background and humanities artistic conception, in order to prove the subject. And the importance of soundscape culture research to the construction of West Lake scenic area is declared further.

Abstract:In the traditional urban landscape design, visual sense is regarded as absolutely important while consideration of acoustic environment is inadequate. In order to promote a new viewpoint for urban landscape design and to enrich the design methods, the concept of soundscape was introduced. Combining sound components with landscape design leads to the concept of soundscape and its features. The type and features of soundscape, and its relation with human perception was observed and analyzed in a survey of city parks . The explanation of the factors, stages and levels of soundscape design built up the soundscape design framework. Soundscape plays an important role in urban landscape. Natural, background, man-made and activity sounds provide meaningful information for human landscape cognition. They enrich and complement human cognitive methods and subjective experience of objective environment. With plastic arts and building technology, soundscape design comprehensively meets the functional needs of human activities, advances the relationship between human being and environment, and promotes the humanity of the objective environment.

Abstract:From the case study of Evening Bell Ringing at Nanping Hill, one of the West Lake Cultural Landscapes in Hangzhou, China, we investigated the soundscape of a scenic area with a profound cultural background. First, we conducted the soundscape physical index of the area in both winter and spring seasons to analyze its objective graphical expression. Second, we focused on people’s reactions to the soundscape in order to obtain a subjective evaluation of each component in the soundscape and integrated environment. Then, the relationship between the objective data and the subjective evaluation was analyzed. Finally, the impacts of the natural environment, history, and cultural factors on the evaluation of the Jingci Temple soundscape were studied. It was found that natural sounds, cultural sounds, and historic sounds were widely acclaimed in people’s subjective feelings, which indicated the close relationships among historical and cultural background, soundscape, and natural environment. Thus, the conclusion was made that soundscape should be consistent with the local natural environment and the historical and cultural background.

Abstract:Soundscapes have played an important role in the design and building of classical Chinese gardens. In Chinese classical poetry, biophonies such as bird calls, and geophonies such as wind, are the preferable sound sources. Although these major sound sources have been categorized and summarized by scholars extensively, little research has been conducted to analyze the physical characteristics and preference matrix of these preferred sound sources. Moreover, the perceived loudness of sound in classical Chinese gardens has received more attention from scholars than acoustic frequency. In this study, we selected 12 sound sources that are most typically present in classical Chinese gardens based on extensive literature research on Chinese classical poetry, and acquired respective audio samples from the BBC's library of Sound Effects. Through the spectrogram analyses, pitch detection algorithm and LSTM audio classification methods, the sound sources were classified into discrete sound sources with pitch variation and continuous sound sources with spectral characteristics of white noise or pink noise. The reasoning behind the preference for these two types of sound sources was then discussed from physical and mental healing perspectives, which aims to help provide perspectives on the associated implications in the planning of urban green spaces.

Abstract:Aimed at the visual-centered tendency in landscape plan,a new method based on soundscape design was adopted.Through in-situ investigations of soundscape on Saga forest park in Japan,soundscape components of urban open spaces were analyzed using statistical method.When subjective evaluation of favor degree and harmony degree towards these components were elucidated,spatial zoning and its characteristics of soundscape were figured out,and the importance weights of soundscape components were computed.The analysis outcome was applied to the soundscape design of Shengzhou Ting Hu water city in China.The minus and plus design method were put forward,and soundscape components and their spatial formation were designed comprehensively.The results show that soundscape design can definitely identify and express inherent sound components of landscape.Soundscape can become an essential constituent in the landscape plan of urban open spaces,and achieve multi-angle approach for the design and evaluation of landscape.

Abstract:This paper presents a series of case studies on the planning of sound environment by means of field measurement and soundscape survey for four Jiangan gardens including Zhuozheng Garden, Liu Garden, Yi Garden and Ou Garden. It shows that Chinese classic gardens effectively integrates the noise reduction into their scenic entity, and endows the natural sounds with an artistic conception.

Abstract:The key to grasp the law of soundscape was making analysis of soundscape on the time dimension. Taking Hangzhou orioles singing park as an example, through the sound, landscape elements to make the interpretation of the four seasons, day and night, the best time and area to build soundscape was got, and the soundscape walking routes were drawn based on the distribution of mark sound in the park. Abstract:Soundscape has been valued and practiced in classical Chinese garden designs. Some authentic patterns were even mentioned and used in gardening books hundreds of years ago. Though these patterns are well-known, how they work in a classic Chinese garden is still unclear. In this study, we chose one of the most famous soundscapes called Tingyuxuan (Listening to the Sound of Rain Hall) in Zhuozhengyuan (Humble Administrator's Garden), Suzhou as the object. A video of the Tingyuxuan was captured on a rainy day, along with its sound. Twenty-four participants were asked to view this video twice (once with audio, once muted, in a random order). Eye-movement data and the subjective evaluation of participants were collected. The results showed that the participants' visual attention is influenced by the sound of rain and helps them identify and observe the main element of the soundscape. Furthermore, participants experienced more positive feelings when viewing the video with the audio on.

Abstract:The enormous diversity between the Chinese and Western cultures led to two different visual principles. Western visuality followed the perspective based on the retina, while the Chinese painters used the "far and near method" ( yuanjin fa 遠近法). Before the twentieth century, the representation and dissemination of Chinese gardens at the visual level were dominated by traditional landscape painting. However, the Chinese gardens' visual representation gradually shifted from traditional landscape painting to Western cartographic techniques (site survey and photography) after the Opium War (1840–1860). When studying the history of Chinese gardens, images provide a symbolic reference for interpreting the past of these gardens as crucial visual evidence. This article uses the visual evidence of classical Chinese gardens as a medium to reveal the influence and role of Western-centric theories on Chinese culture. Fundamentally, this paper attempts to analyse the impact of these changes on the inheritance of cultural memory from an intercultural and interdisciplinary perspective.

Abstract:The phenomena of Chinese words appeared frequently in traditional Chinese gardens. On the one hand, the pictographic Chinese character has a sort of artistic beauty. On the other hand, a single Chinese character is a combination of independent pronunciation and form. What's more, the Chinese grammar is extremely flexible and the phonology skills make the sentence sounding rhythmic. All the above features are the results of the Chinese poetry thought, which also leads to the using of Chinese words in the traditional gardens.
