Abstract:Sustainable processes for purifying water, capturing carbon, producing biofuels, operating fuel cells, and performing energy-efficient industrial separations will require next-generation membranes. Solvent-less fabrication for membranes not only eliminates potential environmental issues with organic solvents, but also solves the swelling problems that occur with delicate polymer substrates. Furthermore, the activation procedures often required for synthesizing microporous materials such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can be reduced when solvent-less vapor-phase approaches are employed. This perspective covers several vacuum deposition processes, including initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD), initiated plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (iPECVD), solvent-less vapor deposition followed by in situ polymerization (SLIP), atomic layer deposition (ALD), and molecular layer deposition (MLD). These solvent-less vapor-phase methods are powerful in creating ultrathin selective layers for thin-film composite membranes and advantageous in conformally coating nanoscale pores for the precise modification of pore size and internal functionalities. The resulting membranes have shown promising performance for gas separation, nanofiltration, desalination, and water/oil separation. Further development of novel membrane materials and the scaling up of high-throughput reactors for solvent-less vapor-phase processes are necessary in order to make a real impact on the chemical industry in the future.

Abstract:In parallel to the rapid growth in economic and social activities, there has been an undesirable increase in environmental degradation due to the massively produced and disposed waste. The need to manage waste in a more innovative manner has become an urgent matter. In response to the call for circular economy, some solid wastes can offer plenty of opportunities to be reutilized as raw materials for the fabrication of functional, high-value products. In the context of solid waste-derived polymeric membrane development, this strategy can pave a way to reduce the consumption of conventional feedstock for the production of synthetic polymers and simultaneously to dampen the negative environmental impacts resulting from the improper management of these solid wastes. The review aims to offer a platform for overviewing the potentials of reutilizing solid waste in liquid separation membrane fabrication by covering the important aspects, including waste pretreatment and raw material extraction, membrane fabrication and characterizations, as well as the separation performance evaluation of the resultant membranes. Three major types of waste-derived polymeric raw materials, namely keratin, cellulose, and plastics, are discussed based on the waste origins, limitations in the waste processing, and their conversion into polymeric membranes. With the promising material properties and viability of processing facilities, recycling and reutilization of waste resources for membrane fabrication are deemed to be a promising strategy that can bring about huge benefits in multiple ways, especially to make a step closer to sustainable and green membrane production.

Abstract:Membrane technology has shown a promising role in combating water scarcity, a globally faced challenge. However, the disposal of end-of-life membrane modules is problematic as the current practices include incineration and landfills as their final fate. In addition, the increase in population and lifestyle advancement have significantly enhanced waste generation, thus overwhelming landfills and exacerbating environmental repercussions and resource scarcity. These practices are neither economically nor environmentally sustainable. Recycling membranes and utilizing recycled material for their manufacturing is seen as a potential approach to address the aforementioned challenges. Depending on physiochemical conditions, the end-of-life membrane could be reutilized for similar, upgraded, and downgraded operations, thus extending the membrane lifespan while mitigating the environmental impact that occurred due to their disposal and new membrane preparation for similar purposes. Likewise, using recycled waste such as polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl chloride, tire rubber, keratin, and cellulose and their derivates for fabricating the membranes can significantly enhance environmental sustainability. This study advocates for and supports the integration of sustainability concepts into membrane technology by presenting the research carried out in this area and rigorously assessing the achieved progress. The membranes' recycling and their fabrication utilizing recycled waste materials are of special interest in this work. Furthermore, this study offers guidance for future research endeavors aimed at promoting environmental sustainability.

Abstract:Membranes serve as important components for modern manufacturing and purification processes but are conventionally associated with excessive solvent usage. Here, for the first time, a procedure for fabricating large area polysulfone membranes is demonstrated via the combination of direct ink writing with non-solvent induced phase inversion. The superior control and precision of this process allows for complete utilization of the polymer dope solution during membrane fabrication, thus enabling a significant reduction in wasted material. Compared to doctor blade fabrication, a 63% reduction in dope solution volume was achieved using the direct ink writing technique for fabricating similarly sized membranes. Cross flow filtration analysis revealed that, independent of the manufacturing method (direct ink writing vs. doctor blade), the membranes exhibited near identical separation properties. The separation properties were assessed in terms of bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection and permeances (pressure normalized flux) of pure water and BSA solution. This new manufacturing strategy allows for the reduction of material and solvent usage while providing a large toolkit of tunable parameters which can aid in advancing membrane technology.

Abstract:Membrane separation technologies are currently considered among the leading technologies for the treatment of polluted (waste)water in terms of treatment efficiency and ease of implementation. However, their wider applications, especially for real wastewater treatment, have been restricted by some bottlenecks, including rapid fouling, low stability, and high production costs. Recently, naturally derived materials including carbonaceous materials (e.g., biochar, activated carbon, carbon nanotubes, graphene and graphene oxide, and carbon quantum dots), clay (e.g., bentonite, kaolinite, and zeolite), and natural polymers (e.g., cellulose and chitin) have been employed for the modification of membrane structures to improve the properties required for efficient (waste)water treatment (e.g., water permeability, hydrophilicity, antifouling) and performance (e.g., rejection efficiency). The present review aims to summarize and discuss the literature available on the application of such naturally derived materials and their applicability for the large-scale fabrication of (waste)water filtration membranes. The existing challenges, scientific gaps, economic considerations, and regional development of membrane technologies have also been discussed, and recommendations have been provided for future studies to develop sustainable membrane structures, leading to a decrease in the overall treatment costs and enhancing the quality of treatment of effluents from industrial and nonindustrial sources.

Abstract:Blended cotton/polyester textiles, despite their popularity, present recycling challenges at the end of their lifecycle, contributing to environmental pollution. To address the urgent need for recycling, this study proposes a method to upcycle these textiles by separating polyester and cellulose with a natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES), creating value-added polyester membranes. Optimization of membrane fabrication involved varying dope concentrations, coagulation baths (ethanol, water), temperatures, and the effects of the pore-forming additive polyethylene glycol (PEG). The key finding is the significant role of ethanol and PEG synergy, which enables the production of tight ultrafiltration membranes from just 15% waste PET. The optimized membrane achieved a molecular weight cut-off of 2 kDa and a pure water flux of 23 L⋅m −2 ⋅h −1 , surpassing typical commercial membranes. This advancement demonstrates a sustainable approach to reusing textile waste, with significant environmental benefits.

Abstract:Membrane-based liquid filtration systems have been highlighted as a key green process engineering platform for process intensification. While these systems have been successfully commercialized in desalination and micro/ultra/nanofiltration, it is yet challenging to expand the limited operating conditions (ambient temperature in an aqueous environment) of the currently available membranes, and to solve the exacerbating environmental burden during the fabrication of polymeric membranes. Herein, a new green and compact fabrication method is proposed for both (i) fabricating a robust membrane that can function beyond the typical operating conditions of conventional membranes and (ii) minimizing waste creation and production time. In this work, contrary to the conventional phase inversion method, a spray-coating technique was employed to fabricate a thin composite membrane with high temperature stability and fast solvent permeability. The proposed compact fabrication method can reduce the carbon footprint and the usage of polymers and solvents more than twofold, and eliminate the time-consuming coagulation and washing steps, both of which generate an enormous amount of solvent-contaminated wastewater (up to 50 billion liters per year). Furthermore, the process used dimethyl sulfoxide to bypass conventional N,N-dimethylformamide and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone as a green solvent, and can simultaneously fabricate a membrane ready to use within a half-day. The resulting membrane exhibited remarkable stability and performance for the separation of solutes in N,N-dimethylformamide, even at elevated temperatures not feasible with conventional polymeric membranes, and so it is a candidate for potential use in the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries.

Abstract:Water reuse is a safe and often the least energy-intensive method of providing water from non-conventional sources in water stressed regions. Although public perception can be a challenge, water reuse is gaining acceptance. Recent advances in membrane technology allow for reclamation of wastewater through the production of high-quality treated water, including potable reuse. This study takes an in-depth evaluation of a combination of membrane-based tertiary processes for its application in reuse of brewery wastewater, and is one of the few studies that evaluates long-term membrane performance at the pilot-scale. Two different advanced tertiary treatment trains were tested with secondary wastewater from a brewery wastewater treatment plant (A) ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO), and (B) ozonation, coagulation, microfiltration with ceramic membranes (MF) and RO. Three specific criteria were used for membrane comparison: 1) pilot plant optimisation to identify ideal operating conditions, 2) Clean-In-Place (CIP) procedures to restore permeability, and 3) final water quality obtained. Both UF and Micro-Filtration membranes were operated at increasing fluxes, filtration intervals and alternating phases of backwash (BW) and chemically enhanced backwash (CEB) to control fouling. Operation of polymeric UF membranes was optimized at a flux of 25–30 LMH with 15–20 min of filtration time to obtain longer production periods and avoid frequent CIP membrane cleaning procedures. Combination of ozone and coagulation with ceramic MF membranes resulted in high flux values up to 120 LMH with CEB:BW ratios of 1:4 to 1:10. Coagulation doses of 3–6 ppm were required to deal with the high concentrations of polyphenols (coagulation inhibitors) in the feed, but higher concentrations led to increasing fouling resistance of the MF membrane. Varying the ozone concentration stepwise from 0 to 25 mg/L had no noticeable effect on coagulation. The most effective cleaning strategy was found to be a combination of 2000 mg/L NaOCl followed by 5% HCl which enabled to recover permeability up to 400 LMH·bar −1 . Both polymeric UF and ceramic MF membranes produced effluents that fulfil the limits of the national regulatory framework for reuse in industrial services (RD 1620/2007). Coupling to the RO units in both tertiary trains led to further water polishing and an improved treated water quality.

Abstract:The facile fabrication of high-performance membranes with attractive water permeability, retention ability, and fouling resistance holds a significant interest within the realm of membrane technology advancement. In this study, we developed an integrated radical polymerization and non-solvent induced phase separation strategy for functionalized ultrafiltration membrane fabrication. This innovative approach enabled the compositive of membrane preparation and functionalization by introducing a radical initiator into the casting solution and incorporating functional monomers into the coagulation bath. We demonstrated the effectiveness of this integrated membrane fabrication method by using zwitterionic sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) as a classic test case. By optimizing radical polymerization time, the SBMA/PVDF membrane achieved simultaneous enhancements in water flux (187.6 L m −1 h −1 ), retention ability (99.0 % rejection for BSA protein), and antifouling property (9.8 % improvement) compared with the pristine PVDF membrane. Additionally, the microstructure, hydrophilicity, and zeta potential of SBMA/PVDF membranes were deliberately controlled by regulating the radical polymerization time. Furthermore, we demonstrated the universal applicability of the integrated membrane fabrication method by replacing SBMA with antimicrobial agent monomers in the coagulation bath. Our research contributes to the field of functionalized ultrafiltration membrane fabrication by developing the integration strategy of radical polymerization and non-solvent induced phase separation.

Abstract:Water quality and disposability are among the main challenges that governments and societies will outside during the next years due to their close relationship to population growth and urbanization and their direct influence on the environment and socio-economic development. Potable water suitable for human consumption is a key resource that, unfortunately, is strongly limited by anthropogenic pollution and climate change. In this regard, new groups of compounds, referred to as emerging contaminants, represent a risk to human health and living species; they have already been identified in water bodies as a result of increased industrialization. Pesticides, cosmetics, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, organic dyes, and other man-made chemicals indispensable for modern society are among the emerging pollutants of difficult remediation by traditional methods of wastewater treatment. However, the majority of the currently used waste management and remediation techniques require significant amounts of energy and chemicals, which can themselves be sources of secondary pollution. Therefore, this review reported newly advanced, efficient, and sustainable techniques and approaches for water purification. In particular, new advancements in sustainable membrane-based filtration technologies are discussed, together with their modification through a rational safe-by-design to modulate their hydrophilicity, porosity, surface characteristics, and adsorption performances. Thus, their preparation by the use of biopolymer-based gels is described, as well as their blending with functional cross-linkers or nanofillers or by advanced and innovative approaches, such as electrospinning.

Abstract:Researchers favour polymeric membranes for water treatment because of their excellent separation selectivity, high membrane performance, unique interconnected structure and inexpensive cost. Electrospinning, phase inversion, track-etching, slip casting, and film-stretching are some of the methods for fabricating polymeric membranes. Among them, electrospun nanofiber membranes (ENMs) are the most actively explored which address the fouling issues during wastewater treatment. It has a lot of advantages for wastewater treatment application. ENMs can be classified into inorganic and organic, and it is important to determine the type of membrane or polymer that is the most suitable for the application. The choice of membrane depends on many factors, including the composition of the operation parameters, application area and separation goals. Nevertheless, membrane fouling that results in poor rejection efficiency and membrane flux behaviour remain as challenges. Therefore, membrane surface modification has been widely embraced to improve the membrane process. Therefore, this review paper aims to provide a detailed analysis of most common used inorganic and organic ENMs in wastewater treatment applications. It also provided insights into the future perspectives for ENMs in water treatment. We hope that this article can provide some guidance for a wide range of application in the membrane industry. This chapter discusses various kinds of vapor deposition processes used to deposit functional coatings onto various substrates and introduces some industrially important wet processes.

Evaluation of a Hybrid Moving Bed Biofilm Membrane Bioreactor and a Direct Contact Membrane Distillation System for Purification of Industrial Wastewater

Abstract:Integrated wastewater treatment processes are accepted as the best option for sustainable and unrestricted onsite water reuse. In this study, moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR), membrane bioreactor (MBR), and direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) treatment steps were integrated successively to obtain the combined advantages of these processes for industrial wastewater treatment. The MBBR step acts as the first step in the biological treatment and also mitigates foulant load on the MBR. Similarly, MBR acts as the second step in the biological treatment and serves as a pretreatment prior to the DCMD step. The latter acts as a final treatment to produce high-quality water. A laboratory scale integrated MBBR/MBR/DCMD experimental system was used for assessing the treatment efficiency of primary treated (PTIWW) and secondary treated (STIWW) industrial wastewater in terms of permeate water flux, effluent quality, and membrane fouling. The removal efficiency of total dissolved solids (TDS) and effluent permeate flux of the three-step process (MBBR/MBR/DCMD) were better than the two-step (MBR/DCMD) process. In the three-step process, the average removal efficiency of TDS was 99.85% and 98.16% when treating STIWW and PTIWW, respectively. While in the case of the two-step process, the average removal efficiency of TDS was 93.83% when treating STIWW. Similar trends were observed for effluent permeate flux values which were found, in the case of the three-step process, 62.6% higher than the two-step process, when treating STIWW in both cases. Moreover, the comparison of the quality of the effluents obtained with the analysed configurations with that obtained by Jeddah Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant proved the higher performance of the proposed membrane processes.

Abstract:The sustainable management of wastewater through recycling and utilization stands as a pressing concern in the trajectory of societal advancement. Prioritizing the elimination of diverse organic contaminants is paramount in wastewater treatment, garnering significant attention from researchers worldwide. Emerging metal-organic framework materials (MOFs), bridging organic and inorganic attributes, have surfaced as novel adsorbents, showcasing pivotal potential in wastewater remediation. Nevertheless, challenges like limited water stability, elevated dissolution rates, and inadequate hydrophobicity persist in the context of wastewater treatment. To enhance the performance of MOFs, they can be modified through chemical or physical methods, and combined with membrane materials as additives to create membrane composite materials. These membrane composites, derived from MOFs, exhibit remarkable characteristics including enhanced porosity, adjustable pore dimensions, superior permeability, optimal conductivity, and robust water stability. Their ability to effectively sequester organic compounds has spurred significant research in this field. This paper introduces methods for enhancing the performance of MOFs and explores their potential applications in water treatment. It delves into the detailed design, synthesis strategies, and fabrication of composite membranes using MOFs. Furthermore, it focuses on the application prospects, challenges, and opportunities associated with MOF composite membranes in water treatment.

Abstract:Membrane-based water treatment processes have been established as a powerful approach for clean water production. However, despite the significant advances made in terms of rejection and flux, provision of sustainable and energy-efficient water production is restricted by the inevitable issue of membrane fouling, known to be the major contributor to the elevated operating costs due to frequent chemical cleaning, increased transmembrane resistance, and deterioration of permeate flux. This review provides an overview of fouling control strategies in different membrane processes, such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, membrane bioreactors, and desalination via reverse osmosis and forward osmosis. Insights into the recent advancements are discussed and efforts made in terms of membrane development, modules arrangement, process optimization, feed pretreatment, and fouling monitoring are highlighted to evaluate their overall impact in energy- and cost-effective water treatment. Major findings in four key aspects are presented, including membrane surface modification, modules design, process integration, and fouling monitoring. Among the above mentioned anti-fouling strategies, a large part of research has been focused on membrane surface modifications using a number of anti-fouling materials whereas much less research has been devoted to membrane module advancements and in-situ fouling monitoring and control. At the end, a critical analysis is provided for each anti-fouling strategy and a rationale framework is provided for design of efficient membranes and process for water treatment.

Abstract:Polymer membranes employed in gas separation play a pivotal role in advancing environmental sustainability, energy production, and gas purification technologies. Despite their significance, the current design and manufacturing of these membranes lack cradle-to-cradle approaches, contributing to plastic waste pollution. This study explores emerging solutions, including the use of biodegradable biopolymers such as polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and membrane recycling, with a focus on the specific impact of mechanical recycling on the performance of biodegradable gas separation membranes. This research represents the first systematic exploration of recycling biodegradable membranes for gas separation. Demonstrating that PHB membranes can be recycled and remanufactured without solvents using hot-melt extrusion and 3D printing, the research highlights PHB's promising performance in developing more sustainable CO2 separations, despite an increase in gas permeability with successive recycling steps due to reduced polymer molecular weight. The study emphasizes the excellent thermal, chemical, and mechanical stability of PHB membranes, albeit with a marginal reduction in gas selectivity upon recycling. However, limitations in PHB's molecular weight affecting extrudability and processability restrict the recycling to three cycles. Anticipating that this study will serve as a foundational exploration, we foresee more sophisticated recycling studies for gas separation membranes, paving the way for a circular economy in future membrane technologies.

Abstract:Membrane separation and photocatalytic degradation are two important technologies for wastewater purification. However, practical applications are hindered by membrane fouling in membrane separation and the low efficiency of photocatalysis. A promising solution lies in the fusion of photocatalysis and membrane technology, capitalizing on their respective strengths and addressing their weaknesses. This comprehensive review endeavours to present a thorough examination of recent advancements in photocatalytic membrane materials and reactors for wastewater treatment. Key facets encompass the fundamentals of photodegradation, the contributions of different light bands to waste removal, various fabrication techniques for diverse types of photocatalytic membrane reactors, and the optimization of operational parameters. Notably, the innovative incorporation of the emerging photothermal effect into photocatalytic membrane technology has significantly augmented its efficiency and longevity in wastewater treatment. Furthermore, insightful commentary will be provided to assess the progress made in utilizing this cutting-edge technology for pollutant removal. Ultimately, the paper will conclude by summarizing key findings and addressing emerging challenges associated with the integration of these processes. The implementation of this advanced technology has the potential to revolutionize conventional wastewater treatment, offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to large-scale wastewater purification.

Abstract:Geopolymer has gained enormous attention in recent years owing to its ease of preparation, low-cost process, and excellent properties. These superiorities result in an extensive application of geopolymers, one of them being membrane technology for wastewater treatment. This review explains the development of geopolymer membrane modification aiming at the optimum performance in wastewater filtration. The modification mainly addresses certain properties, such as porosity and mechanical strength. Subsequently, this article underlines the application of composite material with reinforcement and pore-forming agents to address those characteristics. A profound description of the manufacturing technique is also described, especially the direct pore-forming, dip-coating, and composite methods. Furthermore, the state-of-the-art and cutting-edge geopolymer alteration to hinder fouling phenomena, such as photocatalyst addition as a membrane bioreactor, is thoroughly discussed.

Abstract:This paper describes the experimental results of a pilot-scale application of membrane technologies to textile wastewater advanced treatment, downstream of a biological activated sludge process, aimed at water reuse in textile technology processes. The chosen approach consisted of sand filtration as a pretreatment, a microfiltration (MF) or ultrafiltration (UF) membrane process, and a final separation treatment performed by means of a nanofiltration (NF) or a reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. An experimental study to compare spiral wound membranes, operating under pressure, to flat membranes, operating under vacuum was conducted. The technical results and a preliminary economic analysis indicate the possibility of technological transfer of the membrane technologies to an industrial scale for textile wastewater reclamation.

Abstract:Water is needed for food processing facilities to carry out a number of tasks, including moving goods, washing, processing, and cleaning operations. This causes them to produce wastewater effluent, and they are typically undesirable since it contains a high volume of suspended solids, bacteria, dyestuffs, salts, oils, fats, chemical oxygen demand and biological oxygen demand. Therefore, treatment of food industry wastewater effluent is critical in improving process conditions, socio-economic benefits and our environmental. This short review summarizes the role of available membrane technologies that have been employed for food wastewater treatment and analyse their performance. Particularly, electrospun nanofiber membrane technology is revealed as an emerging membrane science and technology area producing materials of increasing performance and effectiveness in treating wastewater. This review reveals the challenges and perspectives that will assist in treating the food industry wastewater by developing novel membrane technologies.
