Abstract:Valuable fuels and chemicals production from biomass with high yields is always a big challenge in the energy utilization field. Herein, a two-step process for the catalytic conversion of lignin was proposed to form the fuels. In the first step, the depolymerization of lignin occurred efficiently via the hydrogenolysis reaction, resulting in 19.2% aromatic monomers under the catalysis of Pd/C and CrCl3. The catalysts exhibited a synergistic effect on the cleavage of β-O-4 bonds and the hydrogenation procedure, which prevented the condensation of intermediate products remarkably. Afterwards, the aromatic monomers were extracted out with octane solvent successfully (extraction degree 89.7%) and then used as a substrate in a second hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) step. Product mixture composed of 26.5% hydrocarbons (increased from 5.5%) and 49.7% alkylphenols (increased from 42.9%) were obtained after the HDO upgrading, which exhibited high potential to be used as fuels. This two-step approach is very promising to be a practical chemical engineering process for the fuel production from lignin.

Abstract:The effective cleavage of C-O bonds in linkages of lignin was one of the significant strategies promoting lignin valorization. Herein, the strategy of C-O bonds cleavage of lignin using metal triflate as the catalyst was developed. The carboxylic acid or alcohol could be used as the nucleophile to stabilize the reactive intermediates formed during the depolymerization of lignin, and the corresponding ester/ether compounds could be obtained. This catalytic system was suitable for the C-O bond cleavage in α-O-4 and β-O-4 linkages with excellent efficiency. Additionally, reaction conditions were optimized. The reaction mixture was detected by 1 H NMR, and no other byproducts were found. As for treated lignin samples, the cleavage of C-O bonds in linkages was determined by 2D HSQC NMR, the increased content of the phenol hydroxyl group was proved by FT-IR, and the reduced molecular weight was investigated by GPC. Furthermore, multiple phenolic compounds were detected by GC-MS in the reaction mixtures.

Abstract:Selective cleavage of the aromatic CO bonds in lignin is a crucial step for lignin valorization to produce value-added chemicals, however, the development of efficient catalysts for mild conversions is still challenging. Herein, non-precious skeletal CuZnAl catalysts were firstly reported for the depolymerisation of lignin dimers and real organosolv lignin via the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) method. Typical lignin dimers, including α-O-4, β-O-4 and 4-O-5 types, were all effectively converted to the corresponding aromatics and alcohols in isopropanol under mild reaction condition. Furthermore, birch organosolv lignin was also well depolymerized into monophenols in 56.1 wt% yield. Experiments revealed that the water brought by the wet catalyst effectively promoted the CO bond cleavage, but slightly decreased the catalyst reactivity toward hydrogenation in isopropanol. Reaction evolution profiles and control experiments suggested that three reaction pathways were included, with the CO ether bond cleavage and subsequent hydrogenolysis taking precedence over the dehydrogenation or hydrodeoxygenation routes. This work provides an economical and environmentally-friendly method for the selective cleavage of lignin and lignin model compounds into value-added chemicals, which holds great promise in industrial application.

Abstract:Lignin represents the most abundant and sustainable aromatic resource to produce value-added aromatics. However, an efficient and selective cleavage of recalcitrant C–C bonds in lignin under mild conditions remains challenging. Photocatalysis has emerged as a promising strategy for such a C–C bond cleavage under ambient conditions, although the activity and selectivity need to be further improved. Herein, using polyimide as a photocatalyst, we report an efficient and selective C–C bond cleavage in a β-O-4 lignin model under visible light at room temperature. The lignin model was converted into aromatic products with >99% substrate conversion and >99% C–C bond cleavage selectivity, which are superior to previously reported photocatalytic systems. Experimental investigations together with theoretical calculations indicated that the superior performance of the polyimide photocatalyst was attributed to its strong photooxidation capability and efficient charge carrier separation efficiency. Mechanistic studies revealed that the dehydrogenation of the lignin model driven by photogenerated holes was the rate-determining step. This work provides useful guidance for the design of high-performance photocatalysts for selective C–C bond cleavage of lignin.

Abstract:The cleavage of C-O bonds is one of the most promising strategies for lignin-to-chemicals conversion, which has attracted considerable attention in recent years. However, current catalytic system capable of selectively breaking C-O bonds in lignin often requires a precious metal catalyst and/or harsh conditions such as high-pressure H2 and elevated temperatures. Herein, we report a novel protocol of paired electrolysis to effectively cleave the Cβ-O-4 bond of lignin model compounds and real lignin at room temperature and ambient pressure. For the first time, "cathodic hydrogenolysis of Cβ-O-4 linkage" and "anodic C-H/N-H cross-coupling reaction" are paired in an undivided cell, thus the cleavage of C-O bonds and the synthesis of valuable triarylamine derivatives could be simultaneously achieved in an energy-effective manner. This protocol features mild reaction conditions, high atom economy, remarkable yield with excellent chemoselectivity, and feasibility for large-scale synthesis. Mechanistic studies indicate that indirect H* (chemical absorbed hydrogen) reduction instead of direct electron transfer might be the pathway for the cathodic hydrogenolysis of Cβ-O-4 linkage.

Abstract:Upgrading of lignin derived bio-oil is an essential step for producing sustainable bio-based chemicals and fuel. Taken into account that α hydroxyl is the abundant functional group in lignin, high effective and selective catalytic alcoholysis for cleaving the Cα-OH linkages would be desirable. However, an in-depth understanding of the reaction mechanisms involved in the cleavage of Caromatic-Cα and Cα-O bonds over a novel catalyst is still needed. Herein, we report an efficient liquid-phase hydrogen transfer strategy for the selective hydrodeoxygenation of a non-phenolic lignin model compound, 3,4-dimethoxybenzyl (veratryl) alcohol, under mild conditions. By employing iso-propanol as solvent and H-donor, and palladium nanoparticles immobilized on nitrogen-doped carbon (Pd/CNX) as efficient multifunctional catalyst, veratryl alcohol dehydroxylation exhibited almost 100% conversion along with very high selectivity for 1,2-dimethoxy-benzene (46%) and 3,4-dimethoxytoluene (54%). Compared with other Pd catalysis, the Pd/CNX has excellent catalytic performances and exhibits higher selectivity for 3,4-dimethoxytoluene under incorporation with 1% HCOOH at 220 °C. The proportion of Pd (0) significantly increases in Pd/CNX catalyst when introduced into N precursor because of its highly dispersed Pd NPs and preventing the reoxidation of Pd (0). The dehydrogenation reaction occurred through the hydrogen generation of a secondary alcohol. Then, the Cα-OH and Caromatic-Cα bonds of veratryl alcohol were selectively cleaved by catalytic transfer hydrogenolysis. The alcoholysis mechanism is supported by dispersion-corrected density functional theory computations.

Abstract:A mild redox-neutral lignin depolymerization system featuring a water-soluble binuclear Rh complex has been developed. The catalytic system could be successfully applied to the depolymerization of a lignin-like polymer, alkaline lignin, as well as raw lignocellulose samples to produce aromatic ketones, providing a homogeneous catalytic system for "lignin-first" biorefinery in water. Mechanistic studies on the model substrate suggest that the reaction proceeds via a metal-catalyzed dehydrogenation step to afford a carbonyl intermediate, followed by C–O bond cleavage to afford ketone and phenol products. Deuterium labeling study shows that the hydrogen used for cleavage of the C–O bond originates from the alcohol moiety in the substrate.
Selective hydrogenolysis of catechyl lignin into propenylcatechol over an atomically dispersed ruthenium catalyst

Abstract:C-lignin is a homo-biopolymer, being made up of caffeyl alcohol exclusively. There is significant interest in developing efficient and selective catalyst for depolymerization of C-lignin, as it represents an ideal feedstock for producing catechol derivatives. Here we report an atomically dispersed Ru catalyst, which can serve as an efficient catalyst for the hydrogenolysis of C-lignin via the cleavage of C-O bonds in benzodioxane linkages, giving catechols in high yields with TONs up to 345. A unique selectivity to propenylcatechol (77%) is obtained, which is otherwise hard to achieve, because this catalyst is capable of hydrogenolysis rather than hydrogenation. This catalyst also demonstrates good reusability in C-lignin depolymerization. Detailed investigations by model compounds concluded that the pathways involving dehydration and/or dehydrogenation reactions are incompatible routes; we deduced that caffeyl alcohol generated via concurrent C-O bonds cleavage of benzodioxane unit may act as an intermediate in the C-lignin hydrogenolysis. Current demonstration validates that atomically dispersed metals can not only catalyze small molecules reactions, but also drive the transformation of abundant and renewable biopolymer.
Hydrogenolysis of Lignin and C–O Linkages Containing Lignin-Related Compounds over an Amorphous CoRuP/SiO2 Catalyst

Abstract:Efficient depolymerization of C–O linkages is essential for converting lignin into fuels and higher value-added chemicals. In this work, CoRuP/SiO2, an amorphous Ru-Co phosphide composite, was fabricated for the efficient hydrogenolysis of ether linkages. The 4–O–5 and α–O–4 linkages containing lignin-related compounds, such as diphenyl ether, benzyl phenyl ether, 3-methyl diphenyl ether, and dibenzyl ether, are selected as representatives of linkages in lignin. Under mild conditions, Ru-containing metallic phosphides have high-performance for the catalytic depolymerization of C–O linkages. Compared with other catalysts, CoRuP/SiO2 shows an outstanding selectivity for benzene and excellent efficiency in depolymerizing diphenyl ethers, yielding only a small amount of by-products. Furthermore, the total acidity shows a linear relationship with the hydrogenolysis reactivity in cleaving aromatic ether bonds. The mechanisms for the catalytic hydrogenolysis of 4–O–5 and α–O–4 bonds over CoRuP/SiO2 are proposed. Moreover, two-dimensional heteronuclear single quantum coherence nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic analysis demonstrates that CoRuP/SiO2 could effectively depolymerize C–O bonds of lignin. These dominant hydrogenolysis products from lignin have excellent potential in the production of high value-added drugs or pharmaceutical intermediates. The hydrogenolysis of lignin can be a highly efficient alternative to the existing method of lignin utilization.

Abstract:Efficient hydrogenolysis of C-O bonds in lignin offers a promising pathway for producing high-value-added biofuels and chemicals. However, designing an easily synthesized, highly active catalyst for this process remains a challenge. In this paper, a series of Ni-M(Pd, Pt, Ru)/C catalysts were prepared and synergized with NaOH to produce aromatic compounds from β-O-4 model compound (MC). Among the catalyst systems, Ni-0.25 % Pd/C-NaOH completely converted β-O-4 MC at mild conditions (150 °C, 2 MPa H 2 , 3 h) to produce monomers with a yield of 95.6 wt% and excellent selectivity of the bond-breaking products as high as 85.5 %. Recycling tests showed that the Ni-0.25 % Pd/C catalyst remained stable after five cycles, with high activity and without the need for a further reduction before runs. Further, the catalytic system has proven to exhibit high activity for the cleavage of other types of lignin MC, such as 4-O-5, α-O-4, β-O-4 and ether bond (diphenyl ether, benzyl phenyl ether, Guaiacolylglycerol-β-guaiacol ether, benzyl ether) and also effective for lignin from enzymatic cleavage (LEC). Hydrogenolysis of LEC achieved a monomer yield of 34.5 wt%; the molecular weight (555 g/mol) of the hydrogenolysis oligomer was significantly reduced compared to LEC (2872 g/mol). The highly active and stable Ni-0.25 % Pd/C-NaOH catalytic system provides a promising pathway for the efficient hydrogenolysis of lignin and lignin model compounds to produce high-value biofuels and chemicals.

Abstract:The secondary C(OH)-C bonds are abundant in biomass such as lignin and cellulose. Thus, selective cleavage of the C(OH)-C bonds into value chemicals attracted much attention. Molecular iodine has received considerable attention as an inexpensive and readily available catalyst to yield the corresponding products in excellent yields with high selectivity, but it is highly corrosive and toxic, making its use somewhat unattractive. In this study, I 2 was generated in situ from Fe(NO 3 ) 3 .9H 2 O/NaI, which was further combined with Fe(NO 3 ) 3 .9H 2 O to catalyze the oxidation process. In the reaction, the H 2 O molecule from the reaction and Fe(NO 3 ) 3 .9H 2 O attacked the phenylglyoxal to form benzaldehyde, which was further oxidized to benzoic acid. Aryl primary and secondary benzylic alcohols from lignin were successfully transformed into aryl carboxylic acids by Fe(NO 3 ) 3 .9H 2 O/NaI/DMSO. The catalytic system was green and efficient, avoiding the usage of toxic and corrosive molecular I 2 . From the experiments, it was clear that the yield of the product from the substrates with an electron-donating group was higher than that of electron-withdrawing substituted substrates, which was similar to the aryl secondary alcohols. Aryl alkyl ketones were also successfully conducted by the Fe(NO 3 ) 3 .9H 2 O/NaI/DMSO catalytic system.

Abstract:Photocatalyticdepolymerization of lignin beta-O-4alcohol was achieved through the one-pot method, achieving the goalof simultaneously utilizing solar energy and biomass energy. Valorizing lignin into valuable chemicals requires theselectivebreaking of a large number of C-O bonds found in the beta-O-4structure. In this study, we present a one-pot strategy that utilizestwo NiO/TiO2 catalysts for the photocatalytic depolymerizationof beta-O-4 alcohols. The S-1.6%NiO/TiO2 catalyst is used for the dehydrogenation of beta-O-4alcohols at 450 nm. Then, the L-0.8%NiO/TiO2 catalyst isemployed for the hydrogenolysis of beta-O-4 ketonesat 365 nm. Remarkably, the dehydrogenation-hydrogenolysis tandemreaction can be conducted in one pot, which affords high yields ofketones and phenols (up to 89%) from beta-O-4 alcohols.Additionally, the L-0.8%NiO/TiO2 catalyst prepared in thisarticle is the smallest NiO/TiO2 photocatalyst reportedto date, and the size of NiO in the S-1.6%NiO/TiO2 catalystis even small enough to enter the lattice of TiO2. We successfullyregulated the reaction selectivity by controlling the loading methodand the amount of NiO. Our work offers a promising solution for efficientlycleaving target bonds in lignin and provides insights into the designof efficient photocatalysts.
Efficient and selective cleavage of lignin C–C bonds under visible light facilitated by the Zn(II)-doped mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride photocatalyst

Abstract:Despite the promise of photocatalysis for extracting aromatic compounds from renewable lignin feedstocks, the selective cleavage of C α –C β bonds in lignin under mild conditions poses a persistent challenge, primarily due to their elevated dissociation energies and steric hindrance. Herein, an efficient photocatalytic strategy for selectively breaking the C α –C β bonds of lignin with visible-light irradiation and room temperature is proposed, facilitated by the Zn(II)-doped porous graphitic carbon nitride (Zn/CN) photocatalyst. Reduced energy band gap and photoluminescence, along with intensified visible-light absorption and enhanced photocurrent of Zn/CN, contribute to its efficacy in photocatalytic activity. Consequently, the lignin model compound (2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol) achieves a conversion rate of 99 %, demonstrating a notable selectivity of 97 % in specifically breaking the C α –C β bonds. Mechanistic investigations identify that photogenerated holes play a pivotal role during the photocatalytic conversion. Additionally, the activity and selectivity of Zn/CN photocatalyst are further confirmed by the successful photocatalytic conversion of pine kraft lignin, yielding high-value chemicals such as benzoic acid and vanillin. This research proposes an economical, efficient, and facile method for utilizing renewable lignin feedstocks under photocatalysis, thus advancing the production of high-value aromatic compounds.

Abstract:Photocatalytic depolymerization of lignin to prepare high-value chemicals is a promising way to promote the valuable utilization of lignin. However, the complexity and stubbornness of lignin structure seriously decrease the photocatalytic efficiency and selectivity. Herein, the micellar aqueous media (SDS-8/HCl) consisting of sodium lauryl sulfonate and hydrochloric acid was successfully prepared. Photocatalyst TiO 2 and SDS-8/HCl system can effectively depolymerize the typical β-1 lignin models and ethanol organosolv lignin to value-added chemicals by oxidizing cleavage of lignin C α -C β bonds. The addition of hydrochloric acid solution (1 mol/L) improves the selectivity of photocatalytic breaking of lignin C α -C β bonds. Chlorine ions are oxidized to chlorine radicals by photogenerated holes and hydroxyl radicals, dramatically increasing the photocatalytic efficiency. Electron paramagnetic resonance technique and Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry were used to demonstrate the presence of chlorine radicals. Under optimal conditions, the conversion of substrate Dpol is 98.4 %, and the obtained products are mainly benzaldehyde and benzoic acid. Isotope labeling experiments show that water is also involved in photocatalytic reactions and the oxygen needed to form the product benzaldehyde comes from water. Single-electron transfer processes are possible photocatalytic mechanisms that differ from the previous reports. Importantly, water and chlorine ions were found to be involved in photocatalytic reactions for the first time and promote the cleavage of lignin C α -C β bonds. This work provides new ideas for photocatalytic cleavage of lignin C α -C β bonds in heterogeneous photocatalytic systems using micellar aqueous media.

Abstract:Lignin has recently attracted much attention as a promising resource to produce fuels and aromatic chemicals. The selective cleavage of C-O bond while preserving the aromatic nature has become one of the major challenges in the catalytic valorization of lignin to aromatic chemicals. The hydrogenolysis of alpha-O-4 model linkage shows that the iron catalyst prepared by the simultaneous pyrolysis of iron acetate and 1,10-phenanthroline on activated carbon at 800 degrees C is the most active iron catalyst, affording phenol and toluene with yields of 95% and 90%, respectively. This aromatics selectivity is found to be much higher than that obtained over noble metal catalysts. The presence of N center dot center dot center dot Fe species as the active center of heterogeneous iron catalyst was confirmed by various technologies especially XPS and H-2-TPR. For the beta-O-4 model linkage, the vicinal -OH group was essential for the iron-catalyzed hydrogenolysis of ether linkage. The oxidation of the alpha-carbon in the beta-O-4 model compounds can significantly decrease the bond dissociation energy of ether linkage, giving depolymerization products in moderate to excellent yields.
A Metal‐Free, Carbon‐Based Catalytic System for the Oxidation of Lignin Model Compounds and Lignin

Abstract:Nitrogen-containing graphene material (LCN) has been identified as an effective catalyst for the oxidation of beta-O-4 and alpha-O-4 types of lignin model compounds in the presence of tertbutyl hydroperoxide, to provide aromatic aldehydes, acids and other organic chemicals in high yield. The transformations of five lignin model compounds over LCN were investigated systematically. Instrumentation analysis, kinetic study and radical trapping experiments highlight the mechanistic features of the reaction, including: 1) the reaction pathway starts by benzylic C-H or C-OH bond activation, followed by C-alpha-C-beta or C-alpha-O bond cleavage, and finally further oxidation of intermediate aromatics; and 2) the reaction follows a free-radical mechanism with all the key steps involving radical species. In addition, the LCN proved to be a highly stable catalyst; no significant activity decrease was observed for four consecutive runs, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis indicates negligible decrease in the content of the active nitrogen species in the catalyst. Notably, this new catalytic system can be extended to the oxidative depolymerisation of real lignin, to produce a significant portion of liquefied, low-molecular-mass products.

Abstract:The photocatalytic selective breaking of recalcitrant C alpha-C beta bond in real lignin to product value-added chemicals under mild conditions is intriguing but remains challenging. Herein, a sustainable strategy for the efficient and selective breakage of C alpha-C beta bond in lignin beta-O-4 model compounds and lignin over porous tubular g-C3N4 (PTCN) photocatalyst was designed under ambient conditions. Compared with bulk g-C3N4, the construction of PTCN not only facilitates photogenerated charge separation and transfer, but also provides more exposed interior active sites, which is conductive to reactant adsorption on the surface of PTCN, thereby resulting in the higher photocatalytic efficiency. With this strategy, 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol as the typical model substrate was completely converted into aromatic monomers with C alpha-C beta bond cleavage selectivity of 97.2 %. Both mechanistic studies and theoretical calculations revealed that the photogenerated holes, electrons and center dot O2- respectively played an essential role in the C beta-H dehydrogenation and C alpha-C beta bond breakage. Native lignin samples (alkaline, pine and wheat straw) were applied to these photocatalytic systems and successfully depolymerized with C alpha-C beta bond cleavage under optimal reaction conditions. This work could provide an in-depth insight into photocatalyst design for the economical and efficient valorization of lignin.

Abstract:It is challenging to realize the selective C‐C bond cleavage of lignin β‐O‐4 linkages for production of high‐value aromatic chemicals due to its intrinsic inertness and complex structure. Here we report a light‐driven, chlorine‐radical‐based protocol to realize the oxidative C‐C bond cleavage in various lignin model compounds catalyzed by commercially available TPT and CaCl2, achieving high conversion and good to high product yields at room temperature. Mechanistic studies reveal that the preferential activation of Cβ‐H bond facilitates the oxidation and C‐C bond cleavage of lignin β‐O‐4 model via chlorine radical. Furthermore, this method is also applicable to the depolymerization of natural lignin extracts, furnishing the aromatic oxygenates from the cleavage of Cα‐Cβ bonds. This study provides experimental foundations to the depolymerization and valorization of lignin into high value‐added aromatic compounds.

Abstract:Selective cleavage of C sp 2 –OCH 3 bond in lignin without breaking other types of C–O bonds followed by N-functionalization is fascinating for on-purpose valorization of biomass. Here, a Co/Ni-based dual-atom catalyst CoNi DA @NC prepared by in-situ evaporation and acid-etching of metal species from tailor-made metal-organic frameworks was efficient for reductive upgrading of various lignin-derived phenols to cyclohexanols (88.5%–99.9% yields), which had ca 4 times higher reaction rate than the single-atom catalyst and was superior to state-of-the-art heterogeneous catalysts. The synergistic catalysis of Co/Ni dual atoms facilitated both hydrogen dissociation and hydrogenolysis steps, and could optimize adsorption configuration of lignin-derived methoxylated phenols to further favor the C sp 2 –OCH 3 cleavage, as elaborated by theoretical calculations. Notably, the CoNi DA @NC catalyst was highly recyclable, and exhibited excellent demethoxylation performance (77.1% yield) in real lignin monomer mixtures. Via in-situ cascade conversion processes assisted by dual-atom catalysis, various high-value N-containing chemicals, including caprolactams and cyclohexylamines, could be produced from lignin.
