Abstract:With steady growth on CO2 emission over the years, removal of CO2 from the environment is a critical issue in preventing global warming and climate change. Due to negligible volatility and remarkable thermal stability, ionic liquids have become potential media for CO2 capture. However, their drawbacks such as high price, toxicity and inefficient energy consumption have severely limited their applications in CO2 capture. Here, a promising deep eutectic solvent was synthesized by a one-pot method, simply mixing NH4Cl with monoethanolamine (MEA) at 30 degrees C for 30 min to form [MEAHCI][MEA] confirmed by H-1 NMR. [MEAHCI][MEA] with EG exhibits a rapid initial kinetics of CO2 absorption, around 22.5 wt% within 10 min. It also has good thermal-stability, high tolerance to water contents, economically feasibility of regeneration and robust performance in recycle. This novel capture system which can be prepared on-site is feasible for industrialization and offers an efficient, inexpensive and safe system for CO2 capture. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are considered to be potential absorbents for CO2 capture compared to traditional amine solutions, because they have many advantages such as lower volatility and better thermal stability. In this study, a series of novel gamma- and epsilon- m-based amino acid salts (AASs) were prepared through one-step hydrolysis reaction of accessible and cheap lactams as hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA). The chemical structures of these AASs were characterized by ESI-MS and NMR. Dihydric alcohol was selected as hydrogen bond donor (HBD) to prepare AAS-based DESs because of its low specific heat capacity and high boiling point. The physical properties of AAS-based DESs, such as density at 313.2-353.2 K, viscosity at 313.2-353.2 K, the melting temperature from 173.2 to 273.2 K, and thermal decomposition temperature from 300 to 750 K, were also determined. The gas absorption experiments were carried out on a dual-chamber at temperatures from 313.2 to 333.2 K and pressures up to 1.1 bar. It is found that K[Gaba]-EG has the largest CO2 uptake capacity with 0.12 gg(-1) at 1.0 bar and 313.2 K, better than almost all absorbent with AASs reported in literatures (0.02 gg(-1) similar to 0.07 gg(-1)). The CO2 absorption mechanisms were proved to be a combination of 2:1 and 1:1 stoichiometric reaction through thermomechanical analysis and NMR. This paper will present distinctive insights into the preparation of CO2 absorbent for effective carbon capture.

Abstract:The removal of nitrogen compounds (N-compounds) from fuels has attracted considerable attention because of the necessity to reduce nitrogen oxide emission and improve sulfur elimination. In this work, we reported a novel denitrogenation method of fuels using deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as extractants, and demonstrated the essential role of a rational control of the physicochemical character of DESs in achieving superior denitrogenation performance. Among the investigated DESs, the 1 : 2 molar mixture of choline chloride and phenylacetic acid presented the best denitrogenation performance, showing simultaneous efficient removal of both basic and non-basic N-compounds. Without chemical reactions, the extraction efficiencies of pyridine and carbazole at 308 K with a 1 : 1 DES : oil mass ratio were 99.2% and 98.2%, respectively, and the selectivities to n-heptane were higher than 10 000. This was better than the performance of compared conventional solvents. The extraction efficiency was not sensitive to the DES : oil mass ratio and temperature, and remained unchanged after four regeneration cycles. In addition to the "green solvents" character of DESs, these results collectively demonstrate the considerable potential of DESs as promising materials for the green and efficient denitrogenation of fuels.
Efficient capture of iodine in steam and water media by hydrogen bond-driven charge transfer complexes

Abstract:Untreated radioactive iodine ( 129 I and 131 I) released from nuclear power plants poses a significant threat to humans and the environment, so the development of materials to capture iodine from water media and steam is critical. Here, we report a charge transfer complex (TCNQ-MA CTC) with abundant nitrogen atoms and π-conjugated system for adsorption of I 2 vapor and I 3 - from aqueous solutions. Due to the synergistic binding mechanism of benzene/triazine rings and N-containing groups with iodine, special I-π and charge transfer interaction can be formed between the guest and the host, and thus efficient removal of I 2 and I 3 - can be realized by TCNQ-MA CTC with the adsorption capacity up to 2.42 g/g and 800 mg/g, respectively. TCNQ-MA CTC can capture 92% of I 3 - within 2.5 min, showing extremely fast kinetics, excellent selectivity and high affinity ( K d = 5.68 × 10 6 mL/g). Finally, the TCNQ-MA CTC was successfully applied in the removal of iodine from seawater with the efficiency of 93.71%. This work provides new insights in the construction of charge transfer complexes and lays the foundation for its environmental applications.

Abstract:There has been a surge in interest and research in the arena of utilizing deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as green solvents for removal of SO2 in recent years. In this work, an effective strategy for SO2 reversible capture and fixation by four amides based DESs was demonstrated. These DESs are composed of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazoHum chloride (EmimCl) and dimethylurea (DMU), N-methylurea (MU), thioacetamide (SAA), or caprolactam (CLAA) in a 2:1 M ratio, which achieve both high gravimetric and molar absorption capacity of SO2 at 20 degrees C and 1.0 bar (up to 1.26 g per gram of DES, or 8.00 mol per mole of DES). Results of the NMR and FTIR spectra reveal that there are physical interactions between SO2 and DESs. Furthermore, absorbed SO2 can be desorbed and no significant drop in SO2 absorption was observed after five successive absorption-desorption cycles. Particularly, the absorbed SO2 was quickly converted in situ into the charge-transfer complex of bis(sulfur dioxide)-1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane adduct (DABCO center dot 2SO(2)) as a high value-added chemical. The SO2-lean phase was directly reused for SO2 capture, thus greatly reducing energy requirements and providing a promising method SO2 resource utilization.

Abstract:The exploiting of efficient, reversible and environmentally friendly hydrogen chloride (HCl) absorbent is of great significance for the recovery and high-value utilization of by-product HCl. Herein, we propose a new strategy to design deep eutectic solvents (DESs) with multiple-active-sites to effectively absorb HCl. Therefore, five new DESs were designed and prepared by pairing 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone (DMI) with amide derivatives or LiCl. Among them, DMI + 1,3-dimethylurea (2:1) showed the unprecedented HCl capacity of 2.16 mol/mol at 303.2 K and 1 bar, surpassing that of water, DESs and ILs reported in literature. Spectroscopic characterization and quantum-chemical calculations showed that such high HCl capacity originates from multiple interaction sites between DESs and HCl. DMI + 1,3-dimethylurea (2:1) also exhibited the advantages of fast absorption of HCl, good recyclability, good selectivity and acceptable cost. A new reaction equilibrium thermodynamic model was developed to correlate HCl solubility data. The absorption rate of HCl in DESs was measured systematically for the first time. These DESs with multiple-active-sites offer improvements over commonly used absorbents, indicating the promise for industrial application in HCl separation and storage.

Abstract:Developing an adsorbent with optimal absorption capacity for SO2 elimination has been an important issue, yet a great challenge remains. Herein, we initiated a series of ternary deep eutectic solvents (DESs), consisting of diethylenetriamine (DETA), ethylene glycol (EG) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Emim]Cl) with various molar ratio for the systematical investigation of SO2 absorption. It was found that DES with the molar ratio of 2: 1: 2 (DETA: EG: [Emim]Cl) exhibits remarkable absorption capacity (1.02 g SO2/g DES) and robust reusability for SO2 at room temperature and ambient pressure, which is distinctively higher than most of the reported binary DESs so far. Moreover, FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR together with DFT calculations were adopted to clarify the absorption mechanism for SO2. It indicates that the remarkable absorption capacity might be ascribed to the existence of multiple absorption sites. Therefore, this study offers a promising alternative for the design and preparation of highly effective absorbents for gas elimination.

Abstract:The efficient capture of radioactive iodine is of paramount importance due to its harmfulness. In this work, a new Th-based metal-organic framework (ECUT-Th-11) for iodine capture was reported. ECUT-Th-11 exhibited a relatively high capacity of capturing vapor iodine (2.03 g/g). Besides, the maximal adsorption capacity of iodine in a cyclohexane solution reaches 258.03 mg/g. All of the results demonstrated that ECUT-Th-11 could be a candidate material for the effective removal of waste iodine.

Abstract:Abstract Developing efficient adsorbents to capture radioactive iodine produced from nuclear wastes is highly desired. Here we report the facial synthesis of a hexacationic imidazolium organic cage and its iodine adsorption properties. Crucial role of counteranions has been disclosed for iodine capture with this cage, where distinct iodine capture behaviors were observed when different counteranions were used. Mechanistic investigations, especially with the X-ray crystallographic analysis of the iodine-loaded sample, allowed the direct visualization of the iodine binding modes at the molecular level. A network of multiple non-covalent interactions including hydrogen bonds, halogen bonds, anion···π interactions, electrostatic interaction between polyiodides and the hexacationic skeleton of the cage are found responsible for the observed high iodine capture performance. Our results may provide an alternative strategy to design efficient iodine adsorbents.

Abstract:Three cheap DESs comprising of N -methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) and imidazole (Im), 1,2,4-triazole, and tetrazole were investigated for capturing SO 2 at low concentrations. Surprisingly, with the addition of Im, the SO 2 absorption capacity and desorption efficiency were improved. Spectroscopic analysis and quantum chemical calculations confirmed that MDEA–Im effectively and reversibly captured SO 2 through the hydrogen bond network and synergistic action between MDEA and Im.

Abstract:Abstract Considering the importance of sustainable nuclear energy, effective management of radioactive nuclear waste, such as sequestration of radioiodine has inflicted a significant research attention in recent years. Despite the fact that materials have been reported for the adsorption of iodine, development of effective adsorbent with significantly improved segregation properties for widespread practical applications still remain exceedingly difficult due to lack of proper design strategies. Herein, utilizing unique hybridization synthetic strategy, a composite crystalline aerogel material has been fabricated by covalent stepping of an amino-functionalized stable cationic discrete metal-organic polyhedra with dual-pore containing imine-functionalized covalent organic framework. The ultralight hybrid composite exhibits large surface area with hierarchical macro-micro porosity and multifunctional binding sites, which collectively interact with iodine. The developed nano-adsorbent demonstrate ultrahigh vapor and aqueous-phase iodine adsorption capacities of 9.98 g.g −1 and 4.74 g.g −1 , respectively, in static conditions with fast adsorption kinetics, high retention efficiency, reusability and recovery.

Abstract:Effective capture and recycling of SO2 are of great significance to environmental protection and high-value utilization. Herein, a promising strategy for effective and reversible capture of SO2 was proposed using alkaline ternary deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as absorbents. The absorbents consisting of choline chloride (ChCl), diethylenetriamine (DETA), and ethylene glycol (EG) with different molar ratios show a relatively lower viscosity and higher thermal stability. Here, ChCl/DETA/EG (1:1:2) could take out 0.87 g of SO2/g of solvent at 298.15 K and 1.0 bar. Surprisingly, a SO2 absorption capacity of 0.53 g/g could still be gained under a lower SO2 partial pressure (0.2 bar). Besides, the prepared absorbents also exhibit rapid equilibration time and satisfied reusability, providing a potential alternative strategy for the effective and reversible elimination of SO2.

Abstract:With the continuous development of nuclear energy, radioactive iodine in nuclear waste would be hazardous to human health and environment. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop an efficient adsorbent for iodine capture. In this study, a novel ionic liquid ([N 4444 ] 4 PTC) was prepared which combines three effective adsorption sites of heteroatom, fused aromatic ring and ionic bond for iodine capture. To make full use of the iodine capture capacity of [N 4444 ] 4 PTC, [N 4444 ] 4 composite was fabricated by using MF as a carrier which is cheap and readily available. The hydrogen bond between MF and PTC 4 – increases the surface charge density of MF, and endows [N 4444 ] 4 PTC with high porosity. Thus, the iodine adsorption capacity (5.81 g g −1 ) and adsorption rate of [N 4444 ] 4 was significantly improved. This synergistic effect-based iodine capture system was demonstrated to convert iodine molecules into polyiodide anions via charge-transfer (CT) mechanism at electron-rich sites. The formed anionic specie was effectively stabilized by the abundant quaternary ammonium cations in the system, making it easier to take place the adsorption process and increase the stability of the captured iodine. The adsorption–desorption test showed that the composite material exhibits excellent recycling performance and was suitable for multiple use in practical applications.

Abstract:Iodine capture is of great significance for disposal of the hazardous radioactive iodine. CTX[P(O)Ph], one kind of censer-shaped macrocycle cyclotrixylohydroquinoylene (CTX) derivatives, was applied as an efficient iodine adsorbent. It showed satisfactory iodine adsorption capacity in vapor phase and could be reused without obvious adsorption capacity loss. Besides, the adsorbent could also uptake iodine in water. Fortunately, two iodine loading CTX[P(O)Ph] crystal structures were obtained under different conditions to explore the mechanism of iodine adsorption. This work provides a relatively rare example of iodine adsorption by macrocycle.
