Abstract:Porous glass supported with titanium silicalite (TS-1) particles were successfully prepared and used for oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of dibenzothiophene (DBT) and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT). Uniform-sized TS-1 particles were homogeneously dispersed on the surface of the porous glass beads. Effects of reaction duration, catalyst content, initial concentration, oxidant amount, and temperature on conversions were investigated. The prepared catalysts showed excellent catalytic performance. The optimal mole ratio of oxidant-to-DBT was 10 or 15. Complete conversion was obtained within 3 min at 343 K using catalyst with Ti content of 0.507 wt.%. Compared with other studies, the space-time yield was increased by one order of magnitude without any addition of solvent or metal nanoparticles. Experimental results and computer simulations revealed that the coordinated state of Ti species has a key role in the catalytic activity. Spent catalyst would be regenerated by heating at high temperature, no decrease was observed in catalytic activity after three cycles. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Enhanced H2O2 Utilization Efficiency in Fenton-like System for Degradation of Emerging Contaminants: Oxygen Vacancy-Mediated Activation of O2.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is the most commonly used oxidant in advanced oxidation processes for emerging organic contaminant degradation. However, the activation of H2O2 to generate reactive oxygen species is always accompanied by O2 generation resulting in H2O2 waste. Here, we prepare a Ti doped Mn3O4/Fe3O4 ternary catalyst (Ti-Mn3O4/Fe3O4) to create abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs), which yields electron delocalization impacts on enhancing the electrical conductivity, accelerating the activation of O2 to produce H2O2. In Ti-Mn3O4/Fe3O4/H2O2 system, OVs-mediated O2/O2 center dot-/H2O2 redox cycles trigger the activation of locally generated O2, boost the regeneration of O2 center dot-and on site produce H2O2 for replenishment. This leads to a 100% removal of tiamulin in 30 min at an unprecedented H2O2 utilization efficiency of 96.0%, which is 24 folds higher than that with Fe3O4/H2O2. Importantly, further integration of Ti-Mn3O4/Fe3O4 catalysts into membrane filtration ach-ieved high rejections of tiamulin (> 83.9%) from real surface water during a continuous 12-h operation, demonstrating broad pH adaptability, excellent catalytic stability and leaching resistance. This work demon-strates a feasible strategy for developing OVs-rich catalysts for improving H2O2 utilization efficiency via acti-vation of locally generated oxygen during the Haber-Weiss reaction.

Abstract:This paper presents a synthesis process of mesoporous titanium dioxide materials (TiO2) with tetrabutyl titanate as the precursor at ambient conditions. Phosphotungstic acid (PWA) was used as the catalyst, and quaternary ammonium bromide including octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (STAB), cethyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), (1-tetradecyl)trimethylammonium bromide (TTAB), and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) as the structure-directing agent. STAB was found to be the best structure-directing agent. The calcined mesoporous TiO2 materials by STAB were characterized by X-ray fluorescent spectroscopy (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, transmission electron microscopy (TEM)) and nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurements. The nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms exhibit the characteristics of mesoporous structure. TEM results indicate that the disordered wormhole-like mesostructure without discernible long-range order is formed by the agglomerization of TiO2 nanoparticles. The TiO2 materials exhibit good performance in DBT oxidation. The influence of reaction temperature, catalyst concentration, H2O2 concentration, and initial DBT concentrations on the oxidation of DBT was examined in detail. DBT removal from a 300ppm dibenzothiophene mixture was as high as 98% within 2min reaction.

Abstract:The modified mesoporous material HMS( HPW-HMS) was prepared by one-pot process using phosphotungstic acid( HPW) as active component,neutral dodecylamine( DDA) as templating agent,tetraethyl orthosilicate( TEOS) as silicon source. 30% H 2 O 2 as oxidant explore HPW-HMS catalyst on the effect of oxidative desulfurization of gasoline. The result showed that the optimized conditions was as follows: the mole ratio of HPW with TEOS 0. 02,amount catalyst of 0. 2 g,reaction temperature 55 ℃,reaction time of 12 h,volume of hydrogen peroxide with 2. 5 mL,the desulfurization rate is 68. 3%,the catalyst that was reused more than four times still has better catalytic effects.

Abstract:Catalysts play an important role in oxidative desulfurization, a promising process for producing cleaner fossil fuels for transport. A highly efficient catalyst, Q4-H2SeIV3W6, for the oxidative desulfurization of dibenzothiophene (DBT) was reported in 2011. To comprehensively evaluate this catalyst and better understand its recovery, two types of the catalyst were prepared by impregnating Q4-H2SeIV3W6 on MCM-41 and functionalized MCM-41 materials. In the oxidative desulfurization process catalyzed by these supported catalysts, the conversion of DBT reached 98.7%. The catalytic activities were excellent when Q4-H2SeIV3W6 was impregnated on functionalized MCM-41. The results showed that the supported catalysts had excellent reusability. In addition, a mechanism for the catalytic oxidative desulfurization was proposed.

Abstract:The combustion of sulfur-containing fossil fuels has led to excessive emissions of SOx, and the oxidative deep desulfurization of fuels has rapidly attracted the interest of researchers. The TS-1@TiO 2 -x support was fabricated via a simple titanium alkylation method, and the HPW/TS-1@TiO 2 -0.05 catalyst was successfully obtained by impregnation of phosphotungstic acid (HPW) on the support. The characterization of the synthesized materials was conducted by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance (UV-vis DRS), Raman spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and N 2 adsorption–desorption. Characterization results showed that the catalyst remained the Keggin structure of HPW and the MFI structure of support, while also impressed the interaction between HPW and support. The catalytic performance of the prepared catalysts was investigated for the oxidative desulfurization of model oil, including thiophene (TH), benzothiophene (BT) and dibenzothiophene (DBT), with hydrogen peroxide as oxidant. During the ODS process, loading amounts of TiO 2 , reaction temperature, reaction time, catalyst dosage, molar ratio of O and S were optimal to be 5%, 60 °C, 90 min, 0.06 g and 12:1, respectively. The conversion rates of three organic sulfides with different size (TH, BT and DBT) over HPW/TS-1@TiO 2 -0.05 were 99.9%, 78.8% and 99.9%, respectively. Furthermore, a possible ODS reaction pathway over HPW/TS-1@TiO 2 -0.05 is proposed.

Chemical Oxidation of Dibenzothiophene with a Directly Combined Amphiphilic Catalyst for Deep Desulfurization

Abstract:A combined amphiphilic catalyst of octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (STAB) and phosphotungstic acid was formed directly in a reaction system. Deep desulfurization of dibenzothiophene (DBT) with high selectivity was achieved using the combined amphiphilic catalyst with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as the oxidant at 50 degrees C under atmospheric pressure. The optimum molar ratio between STAB and phosphotungstic acid in DBT oxidation has been determined, and the highest reaction rate was obtained when the molar ratio between STAB and phosphotungstic acid approached 1, not 3 as has been reported in some literature, whereas superfluous STAB beyond this ratio caused resistance for mass transfer of products and reagents at the interface. The influence of reaction temperature, catalyst concentration, H2O2/DBT ratio, and mixing conditions on the oxidation of DBT was examined in detail. An increase in the reaction temperature from 40 degrees C to 70 degrees C led to a remarkable increase in the reaction rate. A complete DBT conversion with a DBT concentration of 3000 ppm could be shortened to 10 min as the temperature was elevated to 70 degrees C. The reaction rate of DBT was improved when the H2O2/DBT ratio was increased. Complete sulfur removal from a 3000 ppm dibenzothiophene mixture was achieved within 20 min at 50 degrees C. This oxidation process showed high selectivity toward DBT, and the enhancement of DBT oxidation was illustrated when investigated in the presence of 2-methylnaphthalene.
Green Synthesis of Ag–TiO2 Supported on Porous Glass with Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance for Oxidative Desulfurization and Removal of Dyes under Visible Light

Abstract:As the energy shortage and environmental problem become the worldwide concern, the green synthesis of catalysts and their green applications have long been pursued. Here we proposed a facile catalyst synthesis approach in which Ag-TiO2 composites were prepared through an in situ reduction at room temperature without severe conditions or hydrogen atmosphere. Porous glass (PG) was chosen as the support, and the as-prepared Ag-TiO2/PG was equipped with the remarkable merits of intense visible light absorbance, effective separation of electron-hole pairs, high surface areas for adsorption, and abundant reactive sites for the photocatalytic oxidation. Conversions of 95.2% and 92.1% for dibenzothiophene (DBT) and benzothiophene (BT), respectively, were realized under irradiation of energy-saving visible light emitting diodes (LEDs), complying with the principles of "green chemistry". Moreover, none of the external oxidants, such as H2O2 or O-2, was introduced, greatly increasing the viability of industrial applications. Ag-TiO2/PG also showed remarkable activity for removing rhodamine B (RhB), methylene blue (MB), and methylene orange (MO) with the rate constants of 0.14, 0.18, and 0.055 min(-1), respectively. The mechanism study revealed that the immobilized Ag acted as the role of "killing two birds with one stone": enhancing the absorption of visible light, suppressing the recombination of photoinduced electron-hole pairs via trapping electrons, and contributing to the generation of O-center dot(2)-. In addition, oxygen vacancies, (OH)-O-center dot, and h(+) also took part in the photocatalytic oxidation. This work explored the green synthesis of Ag-TiO2/PG and characterized their excellent photocatalytic activity for photocatalytic desulfurization and degradation of organic dyes, opening up new possibilities for low energy-consumption photocatalysis and sustainable chemistry.

Abstract:Natural porous mineral supported (TiO2/diatomite) photocatalyst was prepared via a modified sol–gel method using titanium (IV) butoxide (TBOT) and diatomite. The effect of TBOT dosage on adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity for Rhodamine B (RhB) solution was investigated. The morphology and elemental distribution were determined by scanning electron microscopy with attached energy-dispersive X-ray detector. The porous and crystalline structures were characterized using nitrogen adsorption–desorption and X-ray diffraction techniques, respectively. The prepared TiO2/diatomite hybrid catalyst has shown relatively even porous structure and dispersion of TiO2 over the surface. This suggests that the diatomite matrix prevented the agglomeration of TiO2 particles. Initially, the surface area and pore volume of the hybrid catalyst were increased by adding TBOT then decreased for dosages higher than 1.0ml. The crystalline size of TiO2 immobilized on diatomite matrix by sol–gel method was around 20nm. When the experiments were carried out in the absence of diatomite, this value was increased to 33.73nm. The use of diatomite also promoted an increase of the transformation temperature of the crystalline phase anatase to rutile for the TiO2. The as-prepared TiO2/diatomite composite exhibited high photocatalytic activity (96.0% for 0.5h UV-light irradiation) for the degradation of RhB from wastewater as a result of its unique porous structure and optimum TiO2 loading. In addition, it can be easily separated from suspension and possess a good durability. This hybrid material holds great promise in the engineering field for the environmental remediation.
Facile Synthesis and Photocatalytic Properties of TiO2 Nanoparticles Supported on Porous Glass Beads

Abstract:This paper presents a novel immobilization method for the preparation of highly dispersed TiO2 nanoparticles supported on porous glass beads. The method involves an in situ ion exchange process and a calcination process. Mono-dispersed TiO2 nanoparticles exhibiting the anatase phase with different mean diameter and different loading amount have been successfully prepared through the controllable and green way. With the increase of loading amount of Ti from 0.08wt.% to 4.55wt.%, the mean diameter of the TiO2 nanoparticles varied from 3.8 to 5.3nm. And the band gaps of the TiO2 nanoparticles with the highest and lowest loading amount are 3.25 and 3.00eV, respectively. The prepared TiO2 nanoparticles supported on porous glass beads showed excellent photocatalytic performance for the degradation of methyl orange (MO). For the catalyst with a Ti content of 0.08wt.%, when the dosage was 1.93e−5g/mL, 65% of the total MO decomposed after 30min; for the catalyst with a Ti content of 2.56wt.%, when the dosage reached 0.81e−3g/mL, complete degradation was observed.
Ti-grafted MIL-101 as hydrophilic catalyst for efficient oxidative desulfurization of dibenzothiophene with hydrogen peroxide

Abstract:Ti-containing porous materials are extensively studied in liquid-phase oxidative desulfurization (ODS) to obtain low-sulphur fuel, these materials displayed excellent ODS performance co-operating with organic oxidants but relatively poor ability with H2O2, which is a green and cheap oxidant widely used in industrial process. To overcome this challenge, we reported a H2O2 compatible ODS catalyst Ti-MIL-101 by treating MIL-101 with TiCl4 in dehydrated CH2Cl2. The results of N2-absorption, UV–vis, IR and XPS indicated that Ti species were mainly confined in mesopore cages of MIL-101 in the form of isolated and oligomeric octahedral Ti which were grafted to Cr centres of MIL-101 by Cl bridge. Moreover, wettability studies further suggested this catalyst possessed good affinity with water-based substance. As a result, Ti-MIL-101 exhibited efficient ODS ability in the oxidative reaction of DBT with H2O2 compared with that with organic oxidant. In model fuel, sulphur content was reduced to less than 10 ppmw from 1000 ppmw within 30 min at 333 K and the corresponding TOF value over Ti-MIL-101 reached 16.8 h−1. This outstanding catalytic ability might be the result of the synergy between the distinct active Ti species and the good surface affinity of Ti-MIL-101.Graphical abstractTi-containing metal–organic frameworks were prepared for oxidative desulfurization of obstinate sulphur compounds with H2O2. This catalyst displayed highly efficient activity in ODS of DBT. The sulphur content was reduced from 1000 ppmw to less than 10 ppmw in 30 min, corresponding TOF number reached 16.8 h−1. This outstanding catalytic result could be attributed to the superior affinity between catalyst and oxidant.

Abstract:Phosphotungstic acid-loaded zirconium dioxide (2) nanoparticles with excellent oxidative desulfurization performance were prepared and fully characterized. By employing this material as oxidative desulfurization catalyst, removal of DBT from 1000 ppm of simulated oil can be completed within 20 min under the optimal conditions. After 5 recycling cycles, DBT removal rate was not obviously decreased, indicating the good recyclability of the catalyst. In addition, this material also exhibited good desulfurization performance for gasoline. The successful preparation of 2 nanocomposite provides an alternative option for catalytic oxidative desulfurization in the production of clean fuel.

Efficient and reusable ordered mesoporous WO x /SnO2 catalyst for oxidative desulfurization of dibenzothiophene

Abstract:The oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of organic sulfur compounds over tungsten oxide supported on highly ordered mesoporous SnO2 (WO x /meso-SnO2) was investigated. A series of WO x /meso-SnO2 with WO x contents from 10 wt% to 30 wt%, were prepared by conventional wet impregnation. The physico-chemical properties of the WO x /meso-SnO2 catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, and the temperature-programmed reduction of hydrogen (H2-TPR). The characterization results indicated that these catalysts possessed mesoporous structures with uniform pores, high specific surface areas, and well-dispersed polyoxotungstate species on the surface of meso-SnO2 support. The ODS performances were evaluated in a biphasic system (model oil/acetonitrile, S initial = 2000 ppm), using H2O2 as an oxidant, and acetonitrile as an extractant. Dibenzothiophene (DBT) in the model oil was removed completely within 60 min at 50 °C using 20 wt% WO x /meso-SnO2 catalyst. Additionally, the effect of reaction temperature, H2O2/DBT molar ratio, amount of catalyst and different sulfur-containing substrates on the catalytic performances were also investigated in detail. More importantly, the 20 wt% WO x /meso-SnO2 catalyst exhibited 100% surfur-removal efficiency without any regeneration process, even after six times recycling.
Ultrathin TiO2(B) Nanosheets As the Inductive Agent for Transfrering H2O2 into Superoxide Radicals.

Abstract:A reflux method to synthesize ultrathin polycrystalline TiO2(B) nanosheets (NSs) which are assembled by single crystals, and further stacked into nanoflower structures, is described. On the basis of the theoretical calculations and experiments, H2O2 can easily substitute the ethylene glycol adsorbed on the surface of TiO2(B) NSs, forming H2O2 NS due to the lower adsorption energy and the unique structural features of ultrathin TiO2(B) nanosheets. TiO2(B) NSs and the H2O2 system can be accelerated to generate superoxide radicals under heat or light and thus exhibit a great degradation property on dye molecules; the total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate was 6 times higher than that for H2O2 alone. Meanwhile, TiO2(B) NSs and the H2O2 system have a good application on the selective oxidation due to the reactive species of superoxide radicals avoiding over oxidization of benzyl alcohol. The conversion of benzyl alcohol oxidized to benzaldehyde in water solution under low temperature and atmospheric pressure was 51.13%, while the selectivity was dose to 100%. We believe that the present findings will provide valuable methods for highly efficient generation of superoxide radicals and broaden their applications in catalysis.

Here we reveal for the first time by using density functional theory calculations that framework hexa-coordinated Ti (TiO6) species of mesoporous titanium silicates are the most active sites for ODS and lead to a lower-energy pathway of ODS. A novel method to achieve highly accessible and homogeneously distributed framework TiO6 active single sites at the mesoporous surface has been developed. Such surface framework TiO6 species exhibit an exceptional ODS performance. A removal of 920 ppm of benzothiophene is achieved at 60°C in 60 min, which is 1.67 times that of the best catalyst reported so far. For bulky molecules such as 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (DMDBT), it takes only 3 min to remove 500 ppm of DMDBT at 60°C with our catalyst, which is five times faster than that with the current best catalyst. Such a catalyst can be easily upscaled and could be used for concrete industrial application in the ODS of bulky organosulfur compounds with minimized energy consumption and high reaction efficiency.

Abstract:In this work, we have successfully immobilized TiO2 nanoparticles with small particle size and narrow size distribution on the inner surface of glass capillaries. By integrating the beneficial properties of nano-sized TiO2 particles with microreactors, the highly efficient catalytic system showed good performance in oxidation of dibenzothiophene (DBT) and photocatalytic discoloration of methyl orange (MO). The mean particle size and loading amount (Ti content: 0.21-2.81 wt.%) are both controllable via the simple manufacturing procedure. The diameter varied from 6.8 to 20.8 nm with the pH increased from 1.59 to 6.48 using ethanol as the solvent. Particles prepared by methanol showed the largest size (18.2 nm) and broadest size distribution compared with those synthesized with ethanol and isopropanol. DBT was converted completely within 2.8 min with an initial concentration of 20 ppm, and 100% discoloration of MO was obtained after 40 s. The highly efficient microreactor is easy to be integrated on a large scale, thus providing a highly promising alternative for a broad range of catalytic applications. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Intensification of Catalytic Oxidation with a T-junction Microchannel Reactor for Deep Desulfurization

Abstract:In this paper, a microreactor system is developed to enhance the oxidation of dibenzothiophene (DBT) and 4,6-DMDBT for deep desulfurization with the oxidant of hydrogen peroxide. A T-junction microchannel was applied to form the aqueous slug flow and a long PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) capillary with an inner diameter of 1 mm was connected directly downstream to maintain the two-phase dispersion condition. Surfactant of octadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (STAB) and phosphotungstic acid (TPA) were mixed in the microchannel to form the combined amphiphilic catalyst directly. The parameters affecting slug formation and DBT oxidation were investigated, including two-phase flow rates, temperature, surfactant type, and catalyst concentrations. DBT conversion of 97% was achieved with a residence time of 1.3 min at 60 degrees C. Furthermore, 4,6-DMDBT could also be effectively oxidized, and increasing the reaction temperature from 25 to 70 degrees C led to a substantial increase in 4,6-DMDBT conversions, from 57% at 25 degrees C to 97% at 70 degrees C. This T-junction microchannel reactor is far superior to the conventional equipment in terms of providing more interfacial area with much less power input.

Abstract:A series of hybrid catalyst @ZSM-5-MCM-41 was prepared in which H3PMo6W6O40 were supported in the pore of micro/mesoporous materials ZSM-5-MCM-41 and HKUST-1 by one-pot method. Five types of ZSM-5-MCM-41 were prepared and corresponding ODS catalysts @ZSM-5-MCM-41 were synthesized. The prepared catalysts were characterized and the most efficient catalyst was selected by XRD, FT-IR, UV–vis, N2 adsorption-desorption, SEM, TEM. The removal of DBT reached 98.13 % by using @ZSM-5-MCM-41−2 under 60 °C with molecular oxygen as oxidant after 150 min. After desulfurization, the catalyst can be simply recovered and reused 7 times with an unnoticeable decrease in catalytic activity, indicating the successful combination of heteropolyacids and micro/mesoporous materials for desulfurization.
