Abstract:We investigated the catalytic efficiency of alginate hydrogels used as a catalyst support. An alginate solution containing palladium and magnetic nanoparticles was dropped continuously through a tapered glass capillary using a syringe pump, and the generated alginate droplets were collected in an aqueous solution containing divalent cations. The prepared PdNPs/MNPs-embedded alginate particles were used as a catalyst, catalyst support, and magnetic stirrer for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol. The catalytic reactions were found to depend on the magnetic stirring of the alginate hydrogels. Furthermore, we examined the recyclability while changing the alginate concentration, divalent cation species, and incubation protocols.

Abstract:Herein, the preparation of a heterogeneous catalyst consisting of 1-2nm sized Pd nanoparticles supported on amino-functionalized mesoporous hollow silica nanospheres and its use for the semihydrogenation of mono- and disubstituted alkynes is reported. By utilizing this Pd nanocatalyst together with the green poisoning agent DMSO, high yields of the desired alkenes could be achieved, while suppressing the degree of over-reduction to alkanes. To our delight, the Pd nanocatalyst displayed remarkable chemoselectivity towards the alkyne moiety, allowing the transformation to be carried out in the presence of other reducible functionalities, such as halogens, carbonyl, and nitro groups.

Abstract:A strategy using biological materials to prepare N,S-doped carbon covering Pd nanoparticles (Pd/N,S-C) from natural silk fibroin was developed. Wet chemical reduction and carbonization were used to synthesize the Pd/N,S-C catalyst. The as-prepared catalyst showed high activity (>99%) with satisfactory selectivity (86–99%) for semihydrogenation of varied alkynes to corresponding alkenes. In addition, this work also demonstrated that the PdCx species disappeared and the effect of electron transfer between Pd and N,S-C enhanced when Pd/N,S-F (N,S-doped silk fibroin covering Pd nanocrystals) was calcined to form Pd/N,S-C, which was beneficial to improve its performance for hydrogenation. Abstract:In this study, we present a novel composite material consisting of β-cyclodextrin nanosponge and sodium alginate, used as a support for the immobilization of palladium (Pd) nanoparticles. The composite alginate-cyclodextrin nanosponge beads were prepared, taking advantage of the 3D polymeric network and β-cyclodextrin cavity of the nanosponge. These beads exhibited excellent encapsulation capabilities for hydrophobic substrates, allowing their transfer in aqueous media. The cyclodextrin nanosponge served as a stabilizer for Pd nanoparticles and facilitated phase transfer. Additionally, the sodium alginate bead contributed to the robustness of the structure and improved the recovery and recyclability of the composite material. Comparative studies with control catalysts confirmed the beneficial effect of incorporating cyclodextrin nanosponge within alginate beads, particularly for more hydrophobic substrates. Optimization of reaction conditions revealed that employing 0.03 g of catalyst per mmol of nitroarene at 45 °C resulted in the maximum yield within 90 min. Evaluation of the substrate scope demonstrated the hydrogenation capability of various substrates with different electronic properties under the developed protocol. Notably, the nitro group was selectively reduced in substrates featuring competing functionalities. Furthermore, the recyclability and stability of the composite catalyst were confirmed, making it a promising candidate for sustainable catalysis.

Abstract:Palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) supported on bio‐based support, Luffa sponge (PdNPs@LS) extracted from waste feedstock towards C−O and C−C bond formation reactions were developed. The catalyst was comprehensively characterized and analysed by FT‐IR, TGA, SEM‐EDX, TEM, and XPS analyses. The newly synthesized PdNPs@LS is robust, selective which offers significant importance from the green and sustainable chemistry point of view. This work reports a practical approach for C−O and C−C bond formation reactions catalysed by Pd nanoparticles supported on Luffa sponge (PdNPs@LS).PdNPs@LS were prepared via a green route in‐situ by using ethanol as solvent, and lignin content present in the luffa sponge could work as an effective reducing reagent to reduce Pd(II) to Pd(0) without any harsh chemical used for reduction. The bio‐based support used i. e. Luffa sponge extracted from the waste feedstock of Luffa guard in a simple filtration method is a cheap, biodegradable, abundant and renewable source with netting‐like three‐dimensional porous structure. Without significant loss of its activity the PdNPs@LS could be easily recovered and recycled for at least three times. The catalyst is characterized by FT‐IR, TGA, SEM‐EDX, TEM, and XPS analyses.

Abstract:The recovery and reuse of costly nanocatalysts is an essential operation in modern nanocatalysis, and improvements in catalyst reusability can contribute significantly to the economic viability and sustainable development of nanocatalysis. Herein, starting with the application of a silicone nanofilament (SNF) coating on a target substrate, a mussel-inspired approach in the form of polydopamine (PDA) deposition on the SNF surface was used to form in situ-reduced Pd nanoparticles (Pd NPs) and to stabilize them on the SNFs. This PDA-mediated approach enabled a high integrity nanocatalyst system to be built on a free-standing SNF support while retaining the porosity in the original SNF architecture. The SNFs-Pd nanocomposites prepared as such were applied to the inside walls of laboratory chemical reactors and used as recycling-free nanocatalyst systems for Pd-catalyzed organic reactions without the laborious conventional catalyst recovery and redispersion processes. The SNFs-Pd catalyst system exhibited high activity and high selectivity in single and successive Heck coupling reactions; and a reusability as high as 90% was still possible in the 20th cycle. This mussel-inspired approach is highly versatile and can be applied to laboratory chemical reactors in different shapes, sizes, and configurations to scale up the nanocatalyst applications. Furthermore, the general utility of the chemistry involved allows this surface modification technique to apply to other supported noble metal (e.g., Ag, Au, and Pt) catalysts, thereby increasing the usability and the performance of nanocatalyst systems.

Abstract:The metal accumulating ability of plants has previously been used to capture metal contaminants from the environment; however, the full potential of this process is yet to be realized. Herein, the first use of living plants to recover palladium and produce catalytically active palladium nanoparticles is reported. This process eliminates the necessity for nanoparticle extraction from the plant and reduces the number of production steps compared to traditional catalyst palladium on carbon. These heterogeneous plant catalysts have demonstrated high catalytic activity in Suzuki coupling reactions between phenylboronic acid and a range of aryl halides containing iodo-, bromo- and chloro- moieties.

Abstract:Photoactivation of catalytic materials through plasmon-coupled energy transfer has created new possibilities for expanding the scope of light-driven heterogeneous catalysis. Here we present a nanoengineered plasmonic photocatalyst consisting of catalytic Pd islands preferentially grown on the vertices of Al nanocubes. The regioselective Pd deposition on Al nanocubes does not rely on complex surface ligands, in contrast to site-specific transition metal deposition on gold nanoparticles. We show that the strong enhancement of the electromagnetic field on the sharp nanocube vertices provides a mechanism for efficient coupling of the plasmonic Al antenna to adjacent Pd nanoparticles. A substantial increase in photocatalytic H2 dissociation on Pd-bound Al nanocubes relative to pristine Al nanocubes can be observed, incentivizing further engineering of heterometallic antenna-reactor photocatalysts. Controlled growth of catalytic materials on plasmonic hot spots can result in more efficient use of the localized surface plasmon energy for photocatalysis, while minimizing the amount and cost of precious transition-metal catalysts.

Abstract:Deposition of atom-precise nanoclusters onto solid supports is a promising route to synthesize model heterogeneous catalysts. However, to enhance nanocluster-support interactions, activation of the nanoclusters by removal of surface ligands is necessary. Thermal treatment to remove surface ligands from supported metal nanoclusters can yield highly active heterogeneous catalysts, however, the high temperatures employed can lead to poor control over the final size and speciation of the nanoclusters. As an alternative to high-temperature thermal treatments, chemical activation of [Pd3(μ-Cl)(μ-PPh2)2(PPh3)3]+ (Pd3) nanoclusters on γ-Al2O3 supports under mild reaction conditions has been demonstrated in this work. Hydride-based reducing agents such as NaBH4, LiBH4, and LiAlH4 have been examined for the activation of the Pd3 nanoclusters. The structural evolution and speciation of the nanoclusters after activation have been monitored using a combination of XAS, XPS, STEM-EDX mapping, and solid-state NMR techniques. The results indicate that treatment with borohydride reducing agents successfully removed surface phosphine and chloride ligands, and the extent of size growth of the nanoclusters during activation is directly correlated with the amount of borohydride used. Borate side products remain on the γ-Al2O3 surface after activation; moreover, exposure to high amounts of NaBH4 resulted in the incorporation of B atoms inside the lattice of the activated Pd nanoclusters. LiAlH4 treatment, on the other hand, led to no significant size growth of the nanoclusters and resulted in a mixture of Pd single-atom sites and activated nanoclusters on the γ-Al2O3 surface. Finally, the catalytic potential of the activated nanoclusters has been tested in the transfer hydrogenation of trans-cinnamaldehyde, using sodium formate/formic acid as the hydrogen donor. The catalytic results showed that smaller Pd nanoclusters are much more selective for hydrogenating trans-cinnamaldehyde to hydrocinnamaldehyde, but overall have lower activity compared to larger Pd nanoparticles. Overall, this study showcases chemical activation routes as an alternative to traditional thermal activation routes for activating supported nanoclusters by offering improved speciation and size control.

Abstract:In this study, we assess the suitability of Pd alloys in direct mechanocatalytic coupling reactions. Copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) were alloyed with palladium (Pd), alongside testing a high entropy alloy and palladium gold alloy. Compared to pure Pd balls the alloys are promising in terms of mechanical properties and costs. Combining Pd with Cu and Ni improved mechanical resilience by up to 330% while retaining catalytic activity, for the tested Suzuki‐Miyaura and Sonogashira‐Hagihara couplings. Both of which led to good to excellent yields within one hour. Notably, alloys containing 20% Pd showed increased yields of over 80% in the Sonogashira coupling, comparable to pure Pd. XPS and in‐situ PXRD analysis showcased the influence of alloyed metals on catalytic processes, emphasizing the significance of the surface composition of milling balls.

Abstract:<p>Alloy and small size nanostructures are favorable to catalytical performance, but not to surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) applications. Integrating SERS and catalytic activity into the nanocrystals with both alloy and small size structures is of great interest in fabrication of SERS platform to in situ monitor catalytical reaction. Herein, we report a facile method to synthesize trimetallic nanoflowers ( NFs) with both SERS and catalytic activities, through simultaneous selective growth of Ag and Pd on Au core to form highly-branched alloy shell. These nanocrystals have the properties of small sizes, defects abundance, and highly-dispersed alloy shell which offer superior catalytic activity, while the merits of monodisperse, excellent stability, and highly-branched shell and core/alloy-shell structure promise the enhanced SERS activity. We further studied their growth mechanisms, and found that the ratio of Ag to Pd, sizes of Au core, and surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide together determine this special structure. Using this as-synthesized nanocrystals, a monolayer bifunctional platform with both SERS and catalytical activity was fabricated through self-assembly at air/water interface, and applied to in situ SERS monitoring the reaction process of Pd-catalyzed hydrogenation of 4-nitrothiophenol to 4-aminothiophenol.</p>

Abstract:Palladium nanoparticles dispersed in ammonium salts of hyperbranched polystyrenes are adhesively immobilized on the surface of cotton or filter papers by simply heating with dicarboxylic acids or halide anions. The resulting Pd@cotton and Pd@filter paper behave as reusable catalysts; in particular, Pd@filter paper is useful as catalyst for application to sequential cross‐coupling and hydrogenation reactions to produce several different products with just one piece of the paper catalyst.

Abstract:Palladium catalysts protected by embedding in polymer films proved suitable as a means to markedly prolong the life-time of the catalyst in hydrodechlorination and hydrogenation reactions for substrates from the water phase. The present work examines and summarizes optimization strategies for synthesis of embedded Pd catalysts. The polymer and the type of Pd catalyst were varied and several synthesis strategies were compared. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) was confirmed to best maintaining long-term stability and offering easy surface coating with highly permeable but resistant membrane layers. The generation of catalytically active Pd species in situ within the polymer (in situ synthesis) allows higher catalyst activities due to suppression of Pd agglomeration which was omnipresent when embedding unsupported nanoparticles (ex situ synthesis). Highest Pd activities were achieved with supported porous catalysts, such as Pd on γ-Al2O3. The loss in catalyst activity due to embedding compared to freely water-suspended catalysts is less pronounced for nano-sized and supported nano-sized Pd than for micro-sized Pd. Polymer embedded Pd/Al2O3 better maintains its catalytic activity than unsupported Pd nanoparticles and Pd black. The loss of activity due to PDMS embedding is a factor of 3, 190 and 1000 respectively. Higher catalyst dispersion and Pd loadings (up to 4wt%) were obtained with condensation-vulcanizing PDMS instead of addition-vulcanizing PDMS, where the Pd load was limited due to lower Pd precursor solubility. Tailoring of the catalyst behaviour using in situ synthesized Pd-PDMS was successful by making a selection in the PDMS type, Pd loading, temperature of nanoparticle generation and type of Pd precursor.

Abstract:Immobilization of highly monodispersed palladium nanoparticles in colloidal mesoporous silica supports has been successfully achieved. The Pd nanoparticles with a uniform small size of ∼1.2 nm can be homogeneously distributed in individual mesopore channels of amino group-functionalized three-dimensional dendritic mesoporous silica nanospheres (3D-dendritic MSNSs) with a Pd content of ∼2.8%. The 3D-dendritic MSNSs-based nanoreactors show high activity in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of bromobenzene with phenylboronic acid, obtaining a yield over 99% with 0.075 mol % Pd catalyst at room temperature in the dark within 12 h. More importantly, the excellent catalytic performance can be maintained with a negligible decrease lasting at least six cycles. It further reveals that the mesoporous frameworks of the colloidal silica supports can be well-preserved after four catalytic runs; meanwhile, the Pd nanoparticles in the mesopore channels also can remain the sizes of 1.5±0.3 nm without significant transfer and aggregation. The unique mesostructure of the 3D-dendritic MSNSs with mesopore channels of short length and large diameter is supposed to be the key role in immobilization of active and robust heterogeneous catalysts, and it would have more hopeful prospects in catalytic applications.
Biogenic Synthesis of Pd-Based Nanoparticles with Enhanced Catalytic Activity

Abstract:Searching efficient sustainable approaches for the metal nanoparticles (NPs) synthesis has become a research focus. Bioreduction with metal-reducing bacterium at ambient temperature provides a green route for metal NPs synthesis, especially for precious metals. In this work, activated Pd NPs were synthesized by contacting Pd2+ solution with an efficient metal-reducing Shewanella oneidensis bacterium, in which the bacterium acted as reducing, capping, and stabilizing agents, and the shape and composition of the Pd NPs could be tuned with the activation of KOH at elevated temperatures. The as-activated Pd NPs showed a favorable performance toward catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP), with a remarkable apparent kinetic constant of 5.0 x 10(-3) s(-1) which was 12 times greater than that of the raw biogenic Pd NPs, even comparable to that of the commercial 5.0 wt % Pd/C. Changes of the Pd NPs aggregates, ratio of Pd to S, and surface area of the support at different temperatures and with different activation reactants were tested to explore the improvement associated with the KOH activation at elevated temperatures. Such an activation approach was also successfully applied for improving the catalytic activity of biogenic Au NPs. This work may offer a sustainable, cost-effective, and efficient approach to prepare biogenic metal nanomaterials for catalytic organic reaction or polutants removal.
