Abstract:Non-noble metal catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of biomass using biomass-derived formic acid (FA) as hydrogen source is one of promising strategies for relieving fossil energy crisis. Since acidic FA would destroy and deactivate naked active sites, developing heterogeneous catalysts with stabilized structure and activity that are qualified in harsh conditions is highly desirable but challenging. Herein, mesoporous N-doped carbon encapsulated Co catalysts (Co-N-C) are synthesized through a facile carbonization of Co(phen)(2)(OAc)(2) with nano-MgO as porogen agent. After acid treatment, the optimized Co-N-C-700 (pyrolyzed at 700 degrees C) could afford full furfural (FAL) conversion as well as > 99% furfuryl alcohol (FOL) selectivity with only 3.5 equiv. FA at 150 degrees C for 6 h, exhibiting much superior performance than commercial Pd-, Pt- and Ru-based catalysts. Using molecular H-2 as hydrogen source not only affords low conversion but also leads to over-hydrogenation of FOL and generation of furfuryl formate (FF). This catalyst is very stable in acidic FA and could be recycled 5 times without deactivation or leaching. Co-N-C-700 is also capable for gram-scale transfer hydrogenation of FAL and is versatile for other aldehydes with > 90% yield of desired products. This work could promote the application of encapsulated Co-based catalysts for selective transformation of biomass in chemical industry.

Abstract:Furfuryl alcohol is a widely-used organic chemical. Catalytic hydrogenation is currently used in the production of furfuryl alcohol from furfural, which has disadvantages of high hydrogen consumption and cost. Catalytic transfer hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol by Cu-Pd/Al2O3 in near-critical isopropanol was proposed in this study. Cu-Pd/Al2O3 catalysts with different Cu and Pd loading were prepared via co-precipitation and characterized with XRD and BET. Effects of Cu-Pd/Al2O3 catalyst composition, catalyst loading, furfural concentration, reaction temperature and reaction time on the catalytic transfer hydrogenation were investigated. The results show that the 18%Pd/Cu-2%/Al2O3 bimetallic catalyst has the best catalytic activity. 100% furfural conversion and 86.4% furfuryl alcohol yield are achieved with 18%Cu-2%Pd/Al2O3 at 190℃ for 3 h. Good catalytic activity is maintained after 4 recycling use. The method proposed has advantages of zero hydrogen consumption, high furfuryl alcohol yield and good catalyst reusability.

Abstract:A new catalytic system was developed for the selective conversion of biomass-derived furfural to cyclopentanone in aqueous solution. CuZnAl catalysts with different Cu/Zn molar ratios (0.5, 1, 2, and 3) and calcination temperatures (350, 500, and 700 degrees C) were investigated, and the CuZnAl-500-0.5 catalyst (Cu/Zn = 0.5, calcined at 500 degrees C) showed a remarkable catalytic performance in the reaction. A 6296 yield of cyclopentanone was obtained at the optimized conditions (150 degrees C, 4 MPa H-2., 6 h), and the TOF was 9.4 h(-1). The catalysts were characterized by nitrogen adsorption, XRD, TEM, N2O titration, ICP, XPS, and a carbon sulfur analyzer. The factors that influenced the activity of catalysts were also investigated. Additionally, the CuZnAl-500-0.5 was recycled five times and maintained good activity and stability. Hence, the current work presents a new and efficient catalytic system for the conversion of furfural to cydopentanone. The low-cost nature of the CuZnAl makes it a potential catalyst for the production of cyclopentanone in industry.
A multi-functional porous cobalt catalyst for the selective hydrogenative ring-opening and rearrangement of furfural to cyclopentanol

Abstract:Developing an economic catalyst to upgrade furfural to cyclopentanol is highly significant for fine chemical synthesis and biomass utilization. In this manuscript, an efficient and economical multi-functional porous Co-400 catalyst was developed. This catalyst obtained porosity, magnetism, Lewis acidity and hydrogenation activity via simple reduction of purchased Co3O4. Various factors were investigated in detail, and 87% yield of CPL could be obtained when Co-400 was used as the catalyst. The active sites of the catalyst were identified according to XRD, IR, XPS, SEM and Raman analysis. Moreover, the keys to the high activity and chemoselectivity of the Co-400 catalyst were mainly attributed to highly dispersed Co-0 species and amorphous porous Co3O4 species, which were precisely controlled by the reduction temperature. The catalyst can be easily separated by magnetism. Furthermore, a possible reaction mechanism was proposed based on a series of controlled experiments and catalyst characterizations.

Abstract:Tandem catalysis for the hydrogenation rearrangement of furfural (FA) provides an attractive solution for manufacturing cyclopentanone (CPO) from renewable biomass resources. The CuNi/Al-MCM-41 catalyst was synthesized and afforded excellent catalytic performance with 99.0% conversion and 97.7% selectivity to CPO in a near-neutral solution under 2.0 MPa H2 at 160 °C for 5 h, much higher than those on other molecular sieve supports including MCM-41, SBA-15, HY, and ZSM-5. A small amount of Al highly dispersed in MCM-41 plays an anchoring role and ensures the formation of highly dispersed CuNi bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs). The remarkably improved catalytic performance may be attributed to the bimetallic synergistic and charge transfer effects. In addition, the initial FA concentration and the aqueous system pH required precise control to minimize polymerization and achieve high selectivity of CPO. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and mass spectra results indicated that polymerization was sensitive to pH values. Under acidic conditions, FA and intermediate furfuryl alcohol polymerize, while the intermediate 4-hydroxy-2-cyclopentenone mainly polymerizes under alkaline conditions, blocking the cascade of multiple reactions. Therefore, near-neutral conditions are most suitable for minimizing the impact of polymerization. This study provides a useful solution for the current universal problems of polymerization side reactions and low carbon balance for biomass conversion.

Abstract:Series of magnetic Cu/Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) with different Cu loading were prepared by co-precipitation method and studied as catalysts for the conversion of furfural to cyclopentanone (CPO) or cyclopentanol (CPL), respectively in aqueous phase. It is found that the product distribution was affected by the hydrogen pressure, reaction temperature, reaction time and the loading of active metals. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Transmission electron microscope (TEM) were used to characterize the catalysts. The results showed that active metals Cu and Fe had obvious interaction. XPS analysis suggested that the electron binding energy of Cu and Fe exhibited a strong interaction, which may be the main reason for the high selectivity of the catalyst to CPO and CPL. The highest yield of CPO was 91% at 3 MPa H-2, 10% Cu/Fe3O4, 443 K and 4 h. Furthermore, the highest yield of 82% CPL was obtained when 50% Cu/Fe3O4 was employed. Importantly, it was found that the catalyst had no obvious loss of activity in the five cycles. The catalyst was easy to recycle because of its magnetism.
Facilitating Selective Conversion of Furfural to Cyclopentanone Via Reducing Availability of Metallic Nickel Sites

Abstract:Conversion of the biomass-derived furfural to cyclopentanone (CPO) involves multiple hydrogenation steps, in which not only the type but also the abundance of metallic sites might impact fates of the reaction intermediates and consequently selectivity of the products. In this study, we found that, during the hydrogenation, the carbonyl and the furan ring functionalities in furfural showed the different response to the number of nickel sites on Ni/ SiO2 catalyst. The hydrogenation of the C = O in furfural could take place effectively with the nickel loading below 1 wt% to form firstly furfuryl alcohol (FA) and then to CPO with the selectivity as high as 98.2%. In comparison, the higher nickel loading favored the hydrogenation of the furan ring in furfural or FA to form tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA), formation of which eliminated the chance for the formation of CPO. The hydrogenation of the carbonyl functionality and furan ring in furfural proceeded via distinct orientations of adsorption and the involvement of the varied number of metal sites. Controlling the number of exposed metallic nickel sites could thus tailor the selectivity of the products in hydrogenation of furfural.
Efficient one-pot transformation of furfural to pentanediol over Cu-modified cobalt-based catalysts

Abstract:Pentanediols are substances with significant market potential as the key monomers for advanced polymeric materials. In this study, we successfully achieved directly hydrogenolysis of biomass-based furfural to 1,5-pentanediol with a remarkable yield of 53.4 % using Cu-modified cobalt supported on cerium dioxide catalysts. Through comprehensive characterization techniques, including H2-TPR, NH3-TPD, XPS, EPR and Raman analysis, the study revealed that the introduction of Cu altered the dispersion of Co species, attenuated the interaction between Co species and cerium dioxide, enhanced its reduction extent, and fostered the formation of plentiful cobalt oxide species and oxygen vacancies on the catalyst's surface. The cooperative influence of Cu and Co heightened the selectivity of the hydrogenolysis reaction. This work provides a novel strategy for the development of greener and more efficient catalytic processes based on non-precious metals that for the selective conversion of biomass-derived furfural to high-value pentanediols.

Abstract:A series of cobalt catalysts with different supports were prepared for the selective conversion of biomass-derived furfural to cyclopentanol (CPL) in one step. The best CPL yield was 82mol% at 160°C, 2MPa H2, 4h when cobalt was supported on ZrO2-La2O3. The supports were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD). The XRD results indicated that the more stable t-ZrO2 formed by doping La2O3. The amount of acid sites of the catalyst increased, too. The influences of parameters such as reaction temperature, hydrogen pressure, and reaction time on the catalytic activity were also investigated. The polymer formed during the reaction may cause the deactivation of the Co/ZrO2-La2O3 catalyst. This work provides a possibility to prepare the stable t-ZrO2 and apply with cobalt metal for biomass valorization.

Abstract:Production of cyclopentanone (CPO) from biomass-derived furfural is attractive but challenging, as deep hydrogenation or ring-opening of furan ring in furfural over Co-based catalysts hinders the formation of the targeting products. In this study, alloying Co with Fe species in Co-Fe-Al catalysts is proposed for selective conversion of furfural to CPO in water. The formation of CoFe alloy in Co-Fe-Al catalyst weakened the interaction between Co species and the alumina carrier, lowered the adsorption/activation of H2, suppressed the formation of especially Bronsted acidic sites, facilitated the electron transfer from Co0 to Fe species, increased the activation energy for hydrogenation of furfural (from 17.2 kJ mol-1 over Co-Al to 33.4 kJ mol-1 over 1.5Co-1.5Fe-1.0Al), and weakened the adsorption of C=C and C-O-C functionalities in furan ring of furfuryl alcohol (FA) on metallic sites. These factors together suppressed deep hydrogenation of furan ring in FA or ring-opening of FA to diols, producing CPO and CPL with total yield of 91.5%, which was attributed to the synergy between hydrogenation and Bronsted acidic sites. In addition, the presence of Fe in Co-Fe-Al catalysts also enhanced the structural stability of Co species, preventing the phase transformation and aggregation of Co species, and rendering the catalyst with superior reusability.

Abstract:The creation of CuNi alloys and Pyrrolic-N-Ni bonding facilitated efficient hydrogenation and acid-catalyzed steps of biomass derivatives in aqueous solvents. The carbon materials containing alloys derived from the pyrolysis of bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit a greater dispersion of metal active sites compared to previously prepared reduced metal materials through stirred impregnation. This characteristic guarantees superior hydroreduction activity. Hydrogen (H 2 ) serves a dual role in the tandem reactions, acting both as the reductant during hydrogenation and as a promoter in the acid catalysis step. Our group revealed that the formation of robust chemical bonds (−N-Ni-) between metal-containing species and N-doped carbon supports can promote the utilization of H 2 hybridization to generate OH δ- -Ni-N-H δ+ in aqueous. This process modulates the quantity and distribution of acidic sites, leading to a notable enhancement in the rate of acid-catalyzed rearrangement reactions. Hence, the Ni-Cu-NPC catalyst synthesized utilizing bimetallic porphyrin-MOFs fulfills the specified criteria and demonstrates excellent activity, selectivity, and stability in the production of cyclopentanone (CPO) from furfural (FFA).

Abstract:Herein, we report that highly dispersed copper–cobalt mixed metal/metal oxide nanoparticles embedded into three-dimensional porous carbon were highly catalytic active nanocomposites for transforming bioderived furfural (FAL) to cyclopentanone (CPO) via aqueous-phase hydrogenation/rearrangement. This simple and efficient catalyst was prepared by controlled pyrolysis procedure using glucose as the carbon source at 500 °C under N2 atmosphere. Characterization of the as-prepared CuCo0.8@C-500 catalyst by XRD, STEM, SEM, TEM, and XPS suggested that there was a synergism between copper and cobalt. Under an extremely low H2 pressure (0.5 MPa), 90.2% yield of CPO could be attained at 150 °C. In addition, the sample could be recycled for several times without decrease in catalytic activity. Two critical reaction intermediates of furfuryl alcohol (FOL) and 2-cyclopentenone (2-CPE) were detected in the tandem catalytic process. Abstract:Biomass furfural-like compounds are chemicals that cannot be extracted from fossil materials, through which a large number of fine chemicals and fuel additives can be opened up, but one big efficiency problem during the transformation is the accumulation of oligomers. Here, we propose a novel and efficient Ru-Mo bimetallic catalyst for selective hydrogenation-rearrangement of furfural-like compounds. The result showed that an unprecedented rearrangement product selectivity of 89.1% to cyclopentanol was achieved under an optimized reaction condition over a 1%Ru−2.5%Mo/CNT catalyst reduced at 600°C. Subsequent characterization suggested that the catalyst presented with weak acidity and strong hydrogenation activity for the reaction, which not only ensures the smooth hydrogenation-rearrangement reaction but also inhibits the accumulation of furan polymers. These findings provide a convenient strategy to tune the catalytic performance of Mo-based catalysts by controlling the reduction and carburization conditions, which appear to be versatile for the rearrangement of furans and similar compounds.

Abstract:A bifunctional Ni3P/γ-Al2O3 catalyst with both metal site and Lewis acid site was prepared by an electroless plating method, and applied in hydrogenative ring-rearrangement of furfural to cyclopentanone. The obtained catalyst was characterized by XRD, XPS, XAS, N2 adsorption-desorption, ICP, TEM, CO chemisorption, NH3-TPD and Py-FTIR. The ultrafine Ni3P nanoparticles (∼3.8 nm) were highly dispersed in the catalyst. The exclusive Lewis acidity of Ni3P/γ-Al2O3 was beneficial for the aqueous-phase hydrogenative ring-rearrangement. The effects of DP time, reaction parameters (temperature, H2 pressure, solvent composition, and reaction time) on the catalytic performance were investigated. The yield of cyclopentanone was 74.6% at furfural conversion of 99.9% at 180 °C in 1 h over Ni3P/γ-Al2O3 catalyst using pure water as the solvent. Moreover, the kinetics of hydrogenative ring-rearrangement of furfural catalyzed by Ni3P/γ-Al2O3 was investigated.

Abstract:Upgrading furfural (FAL) to cyclopentanone (CPO) is of great importance for the synthesis of high-value chemicals and biomass utilization. The hydrogenative ring-rearrangement of FAL is catalyzed by metal-acid bifunctional catalysts. The Lewis acidity is a key factor in promoting the rearrangement of furan rings and achieving a high selectivity to CPO. In this work, highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles were successfully encapsulated into the cavities of a Zr based MOF, UiO-66-NO2, by impregnation using a double-solvent method (DSM) followed by H2 reduction. The obtained Pd/UiO-66-NO2 catalyst showed a significantly better catalytic performance in the aforementioned reaction than the Pd/UiO-66 catalyst due to the higher Lewis acidity of the support. Moreover, by using a thermal treatment. The Lewis acidity can be further increased through the creating of missing-linker defects. The resulting defective Pd/UiO-66-NO2 exhibited the highest CPO selectivity and FAL conversion of 96.6% and 98.9%, respectively. In addition, the catalyst was able to maintain a high activity and stability after four consecutive runs. The current study not only provides an efficient catalytic reaction system for the hydrogenative ring-rearrangement of furfural to cyclopentanone but also emphasizes the importance of defect sites.

Abstract:Recently, it has been noticed that cyclopentanol, a versatile compound under heavy demand, could be alternative produced by hydrogenation rearrangement from biomass furfural. In this work, the design of synergistic ruthenium‑molybdenum bimetallic catalysts (RuMo/CNT) was firstly reported for the selective rearrangement of furfural to cyclopentanol in aqueous phase. Interestingly, the result clearly illustrated the significance of the catalyst reduction which tuned the metal/acid bifunctional roles and affected the catalytic performance. An unprecedented quantitative furfural conversion and high rearrangement selectivity (complete conversion, 74% selectivity to cyclopentanol, 9% selectivity to cyclopentanone) were achieved under the optimized condition over RuMo/CNT. Subsequently, detailed characterizations (N2-adsorption, XRD, HRTEM, XPS, H2-TPR, NH3-TPD, etc.) were performed over relevant catalysts for correlating their catalytic and physicochemical properties.

Abstract:A new strategy was developed for the direct conversion of furfural to 1,5-pentanediol by the hydrogenolysis of the furan ring under mild conditions based on Pt/Co2AlO4 catalyst. This is the first report of the direct catalytic conversion of furfural to 1,5-pentanediol with high yield.

Abstract:Design of efficient and easy-recycling copper catalysts for furfural hydrogenation provides alternative approaches for high-value added chemicals and fuel. In this work, the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of furfural was catalyzed by magnetic Cu/FeOx catalysts via sol–gel method to produce 2-methylfuran with high yield. Homogeneous Cu-Fe-Ox composition could be constructed in the calcined precursor. The growth and evolution of metal centers were modulated and monitored during thermal treatments. The synergy between CuO and FeOx rationally affected the reducibility of the catalyst precursors. After the deliberate two-step-thermal activation, CuO was readily reduced and extruded from FeOx host matrix via phase segregation to give fine Cu particles fastened by FeOx supporting layers. Both experiments and simulation explicitly confirmed the facile isopropanol dehydrogenation to donate hydrogen via small Cu clusters. The dehydroxylation pathway was preferentially happened on furfuryl alcohol with lower activation energy.
