Abstract:This paper proposes a method that can be used to synthesize carbon microspheres with controllable sizes, rich amino groups and oxygen-containing groups. The synthesized materials are portrayed by various methods including SEM, FT-IR, XRD, and EDX. The resulting carbon spheres presented an amorphous characteristic, which displayed a broad range in diameter, high degree of sphericity, and smoothness with amino groups and oxygen-containing groups. Pyknotic and smooth silver shells were deposited on carbon spheres by electroless silver plating. Moreover, it could directly reduce Ag+ to Ag in aqueous silver nitrate. These materials can potentially be used as adsorbents for heavy-metal removal from aqueous solutions.

Abstract:Design and synthesis of porous and hollow carbon spheres have attracted considerable interest in the past decade due to their superior physicochemical properties and widespread applications. However, it is still a big challenge to achieve controllable synthesis of hollow carbon nanospheres with center-radial large mesopores in the shells and inner surface roughness. Herein, porous hollow carbon nanospheres (PHCNs) are successfully synthesized with tunable center-radial mesopore channels in the shells and crater-like inner surfaces by employing dendrimer-like mesoporous silica nanospheres (DMSNs) as hard templates. Compared with conventional mesoporous nanospheres, DMSN templates not only result in the formation of center-radial large mesopores in the shells, but also produce a crater-like inner surface. PHCNs can be tuned from open center-radial mesoporous shells to relatively closed microporous shells. After functionalization with polyethyleneimine (PEI) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), PHCNs not only have negligible cytotoxicity, excellent photothermal property, and high coloading capacity of 482 µg of doxorubicin and 44 µg of siRNA per mg, but can also efficiently deliver these substances into cells, thus displaying enhanced cancer cell killing capacity by triple-combination therapy.

Abstract:Facile preparation of core-shell magnetic metal-organic framework nanospheres by a layer-by-layer approach is presented. The nanospheres have high surface area (285.89 cm(2) g(-1)), large pore volume (0.18 cm(3) g(-1)), two kinds of mesopores (2.50 and 4.72 nm), excellent magnetic responsivity (55.65 emu g(-1)), structural stability, and good dispersibility. The combination of porosity, hydrophobicity, and uniform magnetism was exploited for effective enrichment of peptides with simultaneous exclusion of high molecular weight proteins. The nanospheres were successfully applied in the selective enrichment of endogenous peptides in human serum.

Abstract:The synthesis of a new PEG based hyperbranched copolymer of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEGMEMA-co-EGDMA) was achieved via a one-step in situ deactivation enhanced atom transfer radical polymerization (DE-ATRP). Then, hollow PEG based nanospheres were fabricated from this polymer using a solvent evaporation method and post-stabilisation strategy. Furthermore, the analysis using a cellular metabolic activity assay proved that the copolymer did not affect cellular metabolism, indicating that this PEG based polymeric nanosphere has potential for use in drug delivery applications.

Abstract:Novel asymmetric hollow microspheres with polystyrene-ethylacrylate (PSt-EA) semi-spherical cores and porous hierarchical Ni-Silicate shells have been successfully fabricated by the combination of emulsifier-free polymerization, a modified Stober method and an in situ hydrothermal conversion reaction. During the conversion of the PSt-EA@SiO2 core/shell microspheres to the asymmetric PSt-EA/Ni-Silicate composite, the spherical PSt-EA was melted within the hollow Ni-Silicate interior to form semi-microspheres. Upon further treating the asymmetric hollow microspheres by 500 degrees C calcination for 5 h, hierarchical Ni-Silicate hollow spheres were obtained. The BET area of the asymmetric hollow PSt-EA/Ni-Silicate microspheres was 58.9 m(2) g(-1) and the pore diameter was about 10-20 nm. The large porous nature of the products enable them be used as carriers for bio-molecules, and experiments indicated that the maximum adsorption ability of the asymmetric hollow microspheres could reach 8.2 mu mol g(-1) when the concentration of Cytochrome C was 200 mmol L-1.

Abstract:The hollow composite spheres with a raspberry-like structure were prepared by a self-assemble heterocoagulation based on the inter-particle hydrogen-bonding interaction between the amide groups of hollow poly (N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide-co-N-isopropyl acrylamide) (P(MBA-co-NIPAAm)) microspheres and the carboxylic acid groups of poly(ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate-co-methacrylic acid) (P(EGDMA-co-MAA)) nanoparticles, in which P(EGDMA-co-MAA) nanoparticle acted as the corona and the hollow P(MBA-co-NIPAAm) microsphere behaved as the core. The control coverage of the corona particles on the :surface of hollow core microspheres of P(MBA-co-NIPAAm)/P(EGDMA-co-MAA) hollow composite sphere was studied in detail through adjustment of the mass ratio between the core and corona particles. The effect of the pH on the stability of the raspberry-like hollow spheres was investigated. The polymer particles and the resultant heterocoagulated raspberry-like hollow spheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Abstract:A uniform dispersion of TiO 2 /SiO 2 hollow nanosphere of 290 nm with a high surface area of more than 100 m 2 g − 1 is prepared using polystyrene spheres as templates after calcination at 600 °C. The TiO 2 /SiO 2 hollow nanospheres are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, and X-ray diffraction. The TiO 2 /SiO 2 hollow nanospheres are shown to be highly effective in selectively enriching phosphopeptides, resulting in a significant reduction of non-phosphorylated species and an enhanced presence of modified peptides. The favorable results obtained in the present study for the enrichment of phosphoprotein β-casein pave the way toward a similar treatment of other types of biomolecules.

Abstract:Hollow carbon nanospheres (HCNS) with large surface area were synthesized from hollow chitosan nanospheres by one-step pyrolysis with a relatively low temperature (550 degrees C). The resulted HCNS is fully carbonized and partially graphitized under the experiment conditions. It is an important and facile method to prepare the uniform, shape- and size-controlled carbon nanomaterials by carbonization of the natural polysaccharicle compounds and their derivatives. The as-prepared HCNS has a narrow size distribution in hollow carbon nanospheres (about 53 nm). The structure and size of HCNS are reproducible and could be tunable by changing the preparation conditions. The characterizations to estimate the composition, decompose properties, crystalline form, structure and surface property of the HCNS were investigated using FTIR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction measurement (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis, and the N-2 adsorption-desorption isothermal process. The present preparation method makes it feasible to synthesize carbon nanospheres in abundance in the lab, and the synthesized HCNS could be a promising support for metal catalysts, an ideal matrix connecting with DNA or other bioactive substances.

Abstract:We demonstrate a self-transformation approach for the synthesis of ordered mesoporous silica hollow spheres with radially oriented mesochannels. The method is simple and facile, in which mesostructured silica spheres synthesized in a Stöber solution can spontaneously transform to hollow structure when they are incubated with water. The formation of the hollow structure does not require any sacrificial templates, emulsion droplets, or surface protective agents. The obtained mesoporous silica hollow spheres possess controllable diameter, tunable shell thickness, high specific surface area, and uniform mesopore. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations show that the formation of the hollow spheres undergoes a selective etching process in the inner section. 29Si NMR spectra and detailed reactions demonstrate that the solid-to-hollow transformation of the Stöber silica spheres in water is attributed to the difference in the degree of condensation of silica between their outer layer and inner section. Cytotoxicity and histological assays confirm that the obtained mesoporous silica hollow spheres possess good biocompatibility. Besides, the capability of the hollow spheres as contrast agents for untrasound imaging is conducted in vitro. Moreover, yolk–shell microspheres with a Fe3O4@nSiO2 core and a mesoporous silica shell are successfully prepared based on the facile self-transformation strategy, which provides a general method to create various yolk–shell structured multifunctional composites for different applications.

Abstract:Single-hole hollow carbon nanospheres (HCH) possess unique properties that combine the advantages of a hollow cavity and an opening hole in the shell, making them very attractive in various applications. However, it is still a challenge to synthesize HCH via a facile and scalable route. Herein, we develop a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-assisted emulsion-templating method to synthesize HCH, involving only a hydrothermal process and pyrolysis. In the emulsion system, the PEG molecules can be used as a reverse demulsifier to induce the formation of hollow structures with a closed shell (HCS, PEG-1000), a single hole in the shell (HCH, PEG-2000), and a bowl-like shell (HCB, PEG-4000). Abstract:Herein we report the synthesis and characterization of hollow silica spheres with a narrow size distribution, uniform wall thickness, and a worm-like pore structure. The formation of these spheres was monitored by confocal laser scanning microscopy and dynamic light scattering. A model for the molecular build-up of these silica hollow spheres is derived from these data in combination with studies of the as-made particles by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, pore size analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance. We further demonstrate that these spheres can be used for the encapsulation and subsequent release of different dye molecules.

Abstract:Hollow carbon nanospheres (HCNs) were synthesized by carbonizing fine core/shell particles of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN). The PMMA/PAN core/shell particles were prepared using two-stage soapless emulsion polymerization. PMMA spheres with a diameter of approximately 200 nm were first synthesised by batch mode polymerization and then a PAN shell with a thickness of approximately 30 nm was polymerized on the surface of PMMA spheres by drop-wise addition of acrylonitrile monomer. After freeze drying, PMMA/PAN composite particles were stabilized in air at 250 °C and then carbonized in nitrogen at 1000 °C. Transmission electron microscopy of the final sample showed that all PMMA cores turned into pores and all PAN shells developed into carbon shells. The PMMA/PAN composite particles were converted to HCNs with some adhering with each other and some breaking of the carbon shells.

Abstract:In combination with the breath-figure method, an in situ growth approach of polyphosphazenes was performed on a honeycomb surface resulting in a closely packed nanoparticle coating and a micro/nanoscale hierarchical structure. The hierarchically structured surfaces exhibited high biocompatibility, allowed good cellular adhesion and presented strong potential use as a cell scaffold.

Abstract:Owing to the weak self-assembly ability of precursor components and the unadjustable limitation of micelle structures during assembly process, the synthesis of mesoporous colloidal nanospheres with sophisticated multimodal pore system remains a great challenge. Herein, we report a programmable shear-induced dynamic assembly approach to synthesize radially gradient-structured mesoporous carbon nanospheres with tunable core-shell architectures. Detailed mechanism studies reveal that the micelle structures in our system can be well adjusted by changing the shear force. More importantly, the synthetic process can be programmatically proceeded by setting up an on-demand stirring model, resulting in the intelligent assembly of multimodal mesostructures. The resultant mesoporous carbon nanospheres show small particle size, high surface area, abundant nitrogen species, and radially oriented open-porous structure and, as a result, deliver high capability and ultra-long cyclic life for sodium-ion storage. This facile programmable assembly approach would offer new opportunities in exploring sophisticated multimodal mesostructures for innovative applications.
A Hollow‐Core, Magnetic, and Mesoporous Double‐Shell Nanostructure: in Situ Decomposition/Reduction Synthesis, Bioimaging, and Drug‐Delivery Properties

Abstract:A novel in situ decomposition/reduction approach is developed to manufacture hollow core, magnetic, and mesoporous double-shell nanostructures (HMMNSs) via in situ decomposition and reduction of a beta-FeOOH nanorod core and organosilicate-incorporated silica-shell precursor. The formed HMMNSs are then aminated by silanization for further covalent conjugation to rhodamine B isothiocyanate (RBITC) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) chains. The resultant RBITC-grafted and PEGylated nanocomposites (HMMNS-R/Ps) have excellent blood compatibility and very low cytotoxicity towards HeLa and MCF-7 cells, and can be taken up by cancer cells effectively in a dose-dependent manner, as confirmed by in vitro flow cytometry, confocal luminescence imaging, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies. In vivo MRI studies coupled with Prussian blue staining of slides from different organs show that the nanocomposites preferentially accumulate in liver and spleen after intravenous injection, which suggests a potential application of the nanocomposites as MRI contrast agents. Importantly, the HMMNS-R/P nanocomposites show high loading capacity for water-insoluble anticancer drugs (docetaxel or camptothecin) owing to the presence of a large inner cavity and enhanced surface area and pore volume. Furthermore, the drug-loaded nanocomposites exhibit greater cytotoxicity than the corresponding free drugs. These results confirm that the HMMNS-R/P nanocomposites are promising candidates for simultaneous bioimaging and drug delivery.
Tunable Hierarchically Structured Meso-Macroporous Carbon Spheres from a Solvent-Mediated Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly

Abstract:Herein, we report a versatile solvent-mediated polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) strategy to directly synthesize highly N-doped hierarchically porous structured carbon spheres with a tunable meso-macroporous configuration. The introduction of intermolecular hydrogen bonds is verified to enhance the interfacial interactions between block copolymers, oil droplets, and polyphenols. Moreover, the dominant hydrogen-bond-driven interactions can be systematically manipulated by selecting different cosolvent systems to generate diverse porous structures from the transformation of micellar and precursor co-assembly. Impressively, hierarchically structured meso-macroporous N-doped carbon spheres present simultaneously tunable sphere sizes and mesopores and macropores, ranging from 1.2 μm, 9/50 and 227 nm to 1.0 μm, 40, and 183 nm and 480, 24, and 95 nm. As a demonstration, dendritic-like N-doped hierarchically meso-macroporous carbon spheres manifest excellent enzyme-like activity, which is attributed to the continuous mass transport from the multiordered porosity. The current study provides a new platform for the synthesis of novel well-defined porous materials.

Abstract:Combining the noncovalent and covalent interactions, a series of peptide amphiphiles were designed de novo and synthesized to architect functional assemblies by means of photochemistry. The strand of peptide sequence was structurally capped with photoactive tyrosine-tyrosine (YY) motifs at both termini, and the spacing was filled by alternating of hydrophilic D (L-aspartate) and hydrophobic X (ε-aminocaproic acid) structure. Upon visible-light irradiation, these de novo designed peptides underwent rapid photocrosslinking within merely 10 min. Interestingly, the modulation of alternating D—X pairs in occupying spacer would adjust molecular amphiphilicity, regulate charge distribution, and control particle size and loading capacity of peptide nanospheres (PNS) in aqueous media. With entirely peptide-based matrix, this PNS system could host cationic indicators of fluorescent rhodamine and magnetic GdIII for exemplar near infrared (NIR) fluorescence and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, which paves a pathway to biomaterial and biomedical applications using de novo designed peptides.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Hollow microspheres, especially biodegradable polymeric microspheres, have attracted considerable attention due to their particular characteristics. Up to now, microspheres have been prepared via various strategies, for instance the template synthesis method and the self-assembly process. However, economic, novel and simple methods to prepare hollow microspheres are still being sought.RESULTS: Phosphazene-containing microspheres, which contain self-assembled core-shell structures, were prepared at high colloid contents using an ultrasonic bath via a self-template approach. Along with the controlled self-degradation of the internal core, the corresponding hybrid inorganic-organic hollow microspheres appeared. The mechanism was evidenced by means of transmission and scanning electron microscopy, cross-polarization with magic angle spinning NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis.CONCLUSION: It was clarified that the phosphazene-containing microspheres could be formed and stably dispersed without aggregation even at high colloid contents using the ultrasonic bath method and the microspheres contain self-assembled core-shell structures. Along with the controlled self-degradation of the internal core, the corresponding hollow microspheres appeared. The mechanism of this preparation is of great significance because it is completely different from the conventional template synthesis method and the self-assembly process. Abstract:Herein, we propose an innovative method for synthesizing luminescent hollow spherical nanoparticles. Our method involves the construction of hydrogen bonding connected micelles (HBCMs) utilizing inter-polymer complexes of poly(styrene- alt -hydroxyphenylmaleimide)/poly(4-vinylpyridine) (poly(S- alt -HPMI)/P4VP), which could undergo self-assembly, resulting in the formation of core/shell nanostructures in the selective solvent. The aim was to incorporate two types of fluorescent compounds, namely tris(4–bromophenyl)amine (TPA–Br 3 ) and 1,1,2,2–tetrakis(4–bromophenyl)ethene (TPE–Br 4 ), as the cross-linkers to enhance the shell structures of HBCMs and using dimethylformamide (DMF) was employed to remove the core structures, aiming to pursue the formation of luminescent hollow spheres. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images confirmed the formation of self-assembled spherical structures formed by poly(S- alt -HPMI)/P4VP inter-polymer complexes. The morphological features, hydrogen bonding interactions, particle sizes, cross-linking reactions, core removal, and thermal properties were thoroughly investigated by TEM, atomic force microscope (AFM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) instrument, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses. Moreover, the optical properties were also explored by fluorescence microscope and photoluminescence (PL). This evidence indicates that the HBCMs could be directly cross-linked with TPA–Br 3 or TPE–Br 4 and subsequently transformed into hollow spheres by the addition of DMF. Fluorescent particles featuring hollow spheres could be prepared successfully without traditional dye staining or labeling. This advancement holds promising potential for applications in nano-carriers with improved imaging contrast.

Abstract:Hollow polymer microspheres have attracted great attention in tissue regeneration as cell carrier. In this study, hollow poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)/hydroxyapatite/calcium carbonate (PLGA/HA/CC) microspheres with porous surface were successfully fabricated using bioactive minerals as in situ pore-forming agents. No templates were introduced in this facile approach. The capability of HA to hold water contributed to the formation of the porous surface and the hollow structure. Furthermore, the gas-releasing effect originating from CC decomposition facilitated the generation of opened superficial macropores. Porcine mesenchymal stem cells (PMSCs) were cultured on the microspheres and the results highlighted a better proliferation on microspheres with opened macropores. Therefore, this subtly designed microsphere shows a potential application in cell delivery.
