Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emerging class of crystalline porous polymers in which organic building blocks are covalently and topologically linked to form extended crystalline polygon structures, constituting a new platform for designing π-electronic porous materials. However, COFs are currently synthesised by a few chemical reactions, limiting the access to and exploration of new structures and properties. The development of new reaction systems that avoid such limitations to expand structural diversity is highly desired. Here we report that COFs can be synthesised via a double-stage connection that polymerises various different building blocks into crystalline polygon architectures, leading to the development of a new type of COFs with enhanced structural complexity and diversity. We show that the double-stage approach not only controls the sequence of building blocks but also allows fine engineering of pore size and shape. This strategy is widely applicable to different polymerisation systems to yield hexagonal, tetragonal and rhombus COFs with predesigned pores and π-arrays.

Abstract:Imine-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were synthesized to bear content-tunable, accessible, and reactive ethynyl groups on the walls of one-dimensional pores. These COFs offer an ideal platform for pore-wall surface engineering aimed at anchoring diverse functional groups ranging from hydrophobic to hydrophilic units and from basic to acidic moieties with controllable loading contents. This approach enables the development of various tailor-made COFs with systematically tuned porosities and functionalities while retaining the crystallinity. We demonstrate that this strategy can be used to efficiently screen for suitable pore structures for use as CO2 adsorbents. The pore-surface-engineered walls exhibit an enhanced affinity for CO2, resulting in COFs that can capture and separate CO2 with high performance.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emerging class of porous crystalline polymers with well-defined structures and tunable functionalities, which have fascinating applications in a wide range of fields. However, the synthetic procedures of COFs are mainly confined to the solvothermal synthesis method which usually requires harsh experimental conditions. In this work, an effective solvent-free synthesis method to construct a series of two-dimensional (2D) COFs including imine-linked, azine-linked, β-ketoenamine-linked, which avoids the complicated solvent screening process and most of the disadvantages of solvothermal methods is developed. The crystallinity and porosity of these COFs are comparable to those prepared by traditional solvothermal routes. What's more, the advantages of the solvent-free method enable the production of gram-scale of those 2D COFs through a one-pot reaction, demonstrating high industrial application potentials.

Abstract:The growing interest in two-dimensional imine-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is inspired by their crystalline porous structures and the potential for extensive π-electron delocalization. The intrinsic reversibility and strong polarization of imine linkages, however, leads to insufficient chemical stability and optoelectronic properties. Developing COFs with improved robustness and π-delocalization is highly desirable but remains an unsettled challenge. Here we report a facile strategy that transforms imine-linked COFs into ultrastable porous aromatic frameworks by kinetically fixing the reversible imine linkage via an aza-Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction. The as-formed, quinoline-linked COFs not only retain crystallinity and porosity, but also display dramatically enhanced chemical stability over their imine-based COF precursors, rendering them among the most robust COFs up-to-date that can withstand strong acidic, basic and redox environment. Owing to the chemical diversity of the cycloaddition reaction and structural tunability of COFs, the pores of COFs can be readily engineered to realize pre-designed surface functionality.

Abstract:It remains challenging to synthesize highly crystalline covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with poor reversible bond linkages because of the irreversible bond formation chemistry, which typically affords COFs with underrated crystallinity and porosity. Here, we report a general, green, and scalable protocol to fabricate imide-linked COFs based on organic flux-mediated syntheses. In contrast to traditional solvothermal approaches, this synthetic methodology is controllable, environment-friendly without any toxic organic solvents, and can be easily scalable to a 10-g scale. After an in-depth investigation, we prove the existence of a two-step reaction mechanism, which adjusts the formation and crystallization rate of COFs. Thus, this flux synthesis route can produce COFs with enhanced crystallinity and porosity, leading to outstanding gas sorption/separation performance. Moreover, anhydride, carboxylic, and amide monomers can all be employed to produce imide-linked COFs. This work enriches the synthesis toolboxes for COFs and presents a potential pathway to industrial-scale synthesis of COFs.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks have emerged as a powerful synthetic platform for installing and interconverting dedicated molecular functions on a crystalline polymeric backbone with atomic precision. Here, we present a novel strategy to directly access amine-linked covalent organic frameworks, which serve as a scaffold enabling pore-wall modification and linkage-interconversion by new synthetic methods based on Leuckart–Wallach reduction with formic acid and ammonium formate. Frameworks connected entirely by secondary amine linkages, mixed amine/imine bonds, and partially formylated amine linkages are obtained in a single step from imine-linked frameworks or directly from corresponding linkers in a one-pot crystallization-reduction approach. The new, 2D amine-linked covalent organic frameworks, rPI-3-COF, rTTI-COF, and rPy1P-COF, are obtained with high crystallinity and large surface areas. Secondary amines, installed as reactive sites on the pore wall, enable further postsynthetic functionalization to access tailored covalent organic frameworks, with increased hydrolytic stability, as potential heterogeneous catalysts.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) bearing various topologies can be precisely designed based on the symmetry of monomers. Their pore environment can be further regulated via either pre-functionalization of the monomers or post-modification of the skeleton. Among them, sub-stoichiometric synthesis is an efficient method which can mediate uncondensed functional moieties periodically arranged in the COF skeletons. Herein, a series of imine-linked 2D COFs with specifically decorated formyl or amino groups were selectively synthesized via sub-stoichiometric formyl transamination. The molar ratios of the monomers directly determine the structures of the resulting COFs with periodic vertex vacancies. The COF with polar amino sites could efficiently capture CO2 and H2O. This work demonstrates tuning the stoichiometry of the monomers could facilely modulate the functions of the pore channels. It also provides insights into constructing novel COFs with complex structures for targeted applications.

Abstract:The development of linkage chemistry in the research area of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is fundamentally important for creating robust structures with high crystallinity and diversified functionality. We reach herein a new level of complexity and controllability in linkage chemistry by achieving the first synthesis of fused-ring-linked COFs. A series of bicyclic pyrano[4,3-b]pyridine COFs have been constructed via a cascade protocol involving Schiff-base condensation, intramolecular [4 + 2] cycloaddition, and dehydroaromatization. With a broad scope of Brønsted or Lewis acids as the catalyst, the designed monomers, that is, O-propargylic salicylaldehydes and multitopic anilines, were converted into the fused-ring-linked frameworks in a one-pot fashion. The obtained COFs exhibited excellence in terms of purity, stability, and crystallinity, as comprehensively characterized by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and so on. Specifically, the highly selective formation (>94%) of pyrano[4,3-b]pyridine linkage was verified by quantitative NMR measurements combined with 13C-labeling synthesis. Moreover, the fused-ring linkage possesses fully locked conformation, which benefits to the high crystallinity observed for these COFs. Abstract:Although the variety of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is expanding, it is still limited and challenging to construct COFs through the formation of two types of covalent linkages. In this study, we present a one-step method for the preparation of a highly crystalline COF with olefin and imine dual linkages, which is achieved by organobase-catalyzed orthogonal Schiff base reaction and Knoevenagel condensation. Intriguingly, this method can also be utilized for the synthesis of an imine-linked COF. The resulting TFPT-APA COF with dual linkages possesses a high specific surface area of 1329 m 2 g −1 and exhibits enhanced performance in photocatalytic degradation of pollutants over the structurally similar imine-linked TFPT-PA COF. Further studies reveal that TFPT-APA can generate singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) under light irradiation, whereas TFPT-PA does not possess this capability. This study not only provides a new approach for the design and synthesis of COFs with dual linkages, but also opens up possibilities for constructing COFs with diverse catalytic properties.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) show great potential for many advanced applications on account of their structural uniqueness. To address the synthetic challenges, facile chemical routes to engineer the porosity, crystallinity, and functionality of COFs are highly sought after. Herein, we report a synthetic approach that employs the Cadogan reaction to introduce nitrogen-containing heterocycles as the linkages in the framework. Irreversible indazole and benzimidazolylidene (BIY) linkages are introduced into COFs for the first time via phosphine-induced reductive cyclization of the common imine linkages following either stepwise or one-pot reaction protocols. The successful linkage transformation introduces new functionalities, as demonstrated in the case of BIY-COF, which displays excellent intrinsic proton conductivity without the need of impregnation with external proton transfer reagents. Such a general strategy will open the window to a broader class of functional porous crystalline materials.

Abstract:Amide-linked covalent organic frameworks (amide COFs) possess enormous potentials in practical applications benefiting from their high stability and polyamide structures. However, they suffer from very limited accessibility. Herein, we report a new linkage conversion method to rapidly synthesize crystalline amide COFs through oxidation of imine linkages in their corresponding imine-linked frameworks with KHSO5 as an oxidant under very mild conditions. This synthetic strategy is general, facile, efficient, and scalable, as demonstrated by the procedure of simply stirring mixtures of imine-linked COFs (seven examples) and KHSO5 in anhydrous dimethylformamide for several hours to complete the conversions and gram-scale synthesis. The high efficiency of this approach enables facile production of amide COFs from widely available imine-linked COFs, which lays the foundation for exploring practical applications of this unique type of polyamide material.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been widely recognized for their unique advantages. Owing to the ease of formation and the variety of structures and functions, imine linkages have become the most important linkage for COFs. This review describes advances of imine‐linked COFs in topology design, powders, and thin film preparation, as well as their applications in gas adsorption separation, catalysis, and optoelectronic devices. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are new porous organic materials made of organic building blocks precisely constructed by strong covalent bonds. These new materials feature tunable structure, permanent porosity, high crystallinity, high specific surface area, and excellent stability, which enable COFs to be used in many applications. Linkage chemistry is a key factor in the synthesis of COFs and the control of their physicochemical properties. The boroxine, boronate‐ester, imine, hydrazone, imide, and C=C linkages have been widely used in the construction of COFs. Among the various linkages, imine has become the most important linkage for the COFs due to the easy formation of imine linkage with structural and functional diversity. Over the past decade, imine‐linked COFs have made significant progress and become an indispensable part of various applications of COFs. Here, we aim to provide a comprehensive review of the research progress in the field of imine‐linked COFs, especially the advances in topology design and COF powder and film preparation, and their important advances in gas adsorption, catalysis, and optoelectronic devices. Finally, we discuss the challenges in the design, synthesis, and application of imine‐linked COFs, and present our views on the further development of imine‐linked COFs.

Abstract:A convenient method was developed that allows for the synthesis of highly crystalline and porous imine-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) in hours. The use of an apolar solvent in combination with a precise amount of water and acetic acid was crucial to obtain materials of optimal quality. Twelve different COFs could be produced under the same reaction conditions, using a green solvent mixture of n-butanol, acetic acid and water at 70 °C for 16 hours with stirring. The crystallinity of the COFs produced in this manner is similar or better than that obtained by traditional solvothermal synthesis. The method could be easily scaled to synthesize over ten grams of COF in one batch. Optical microscopy, FTIR spectroscopy and in situ Raman spectroscopy gave insight in the role of the solvent on the aggregation of COF nanosheets and the resulting crystallinity, porosity and robustness of the material.
