Abstract:Sequestration of toxic oxo-anions (such as 99TcO4- and ClO4-) from wastewater has received constant attention due to the existing serious threat to public health and the sustainability of the environment. In view of the low energy of hydration of TcO4- and ClO4-, cationic metal-organic framework (MOF) materials with the hydrophobic microenvironment are preferred in the selection of sorbents. Herein, a twofold interpenetrated cationic MOF (ZJU-X15) with double-helical chains was constructed by tetrakis[4-(pyridin-4-yl)phenyl]ethene (TPPE) and Cd2+ for the elimination of 99TcO4- and ClO4-. Profiting from hydrophobic channels, ZJU-X15 could remove most of ReO4- (a surrogate for 99TcO4-) and ClO4- in less than 10 and 20 min, respectively. As the result of batch experiments, ZJU-X15 could capture 356 mg of ReO4- and 221 mg of ClO4- per 1 g of sorbent, showcase decent selectivity, and still maintain high removal efficiency for anions after four recycles. Furthermore, the process of anion-exchange was confirmed by ion chromatography, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy combined with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, indicating that target anions successfully entered into the body of ZJU-X15 through anion exchange.

Abstract:A novel Zn-based metal organic framework (MOF) was synthesized from the mixed ligands, 3,3',5,5'-azoxybenzenetetracarboxylic acid (H(4)AOBTC) and 1,4-bis(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)benzene (phenDIB) ligand. The crystal structure of the complex exhibits an interpenetrated three-dimensional framework that can be simplified as a (4,4)-connected 2-nodal bbf net. This MOF displays extraordinary thermostability in boiling water for 12 h and chemical stability in a wide pH range of 2-13. The most intriguing feature is that it can successfully separate cationic dyes from mixed dye molecules in aqueous solution with high effectivity and selectivity, even for rhodamine B molecule with a large size. Furthermore, this material is reusable, and the adsorbed dye molecules can be released and recovered completely. It is very important for the practical application from a view of environmental protection and resource recycling.

Abstract:A novel 3D anionic microporous metal-organic framework, Cu2(H4DCPPA) (ZJU-71, H4DCPPA=[1,1′:2′,1′′-terphenyl]-4,4′,4′′,5′-tetracarboxylic acid, ZJU=Zhejiang University), has been synthesized and structurally characterized. Abstract:The single-crystal to single-crystal (SC–SC) transformation from a 1D coordination chain to a 3D coordination network, which is triggered by both solvent and anion exchanges, has been revealed to suffer from a tandem mechanism as proved by isolation of the intermediate state. Abstract:A nanoscale metal–organic framework (MOF) based on zirconium, featuring the stacking of a layered structure, has been successfully synthesized. The linear dicarboxylic acid ligand FeTPY2 was built from a unique coordination–dimerization strategy, through the coordination of terpyridyl group with ferrous ions. This approach offers a methodology for extending the length of ligands, which is rarely employed in the MOF design. Subsequently, this ligand was used for making Zr-FeTPY2. The deliberate incorporation of cationic Fe2+ units within Zr-FeTPY2 renders it highly effective in the selective adsorption of anionic dyes, with a loading capacity of 2.84 g/g for Acid Red 94. This result demonstrates the superiority of the developed Zr-FeTPY2 over charge-neutral UiO-68, providing a viable strategy for sustainable water treatment and dye recovery.

Abstract:Given the large amount of toxic Cr(VI) wastewater from various industries, it is urgent to take effective treatment measures. Adsorption has been regarded as highly desirable for Cr(VI) removal, but the effectiveness of most adsorbents is significantly dependent on pH value, in which precipitous performance drop and even structural collapse generally occur in strong acidic/alkaline aqueous. Thus, maintaining high adsorption performance and structural integrity over a wide pH range is challenging. To efficiently remove Cr(VI), we designed and prepared of an acid-base resistant metal-organic framework (MOF) Zr-BDPO, by introducing weak acid-base groups (-NH-, -N= and -OH) onto the ligand. Zr-BDPO achieved a maximum adsorption capacity of 555.6 mg · g −1 and retained skeletal structure at pH= 1–11. Interestingly, all these groups can generate conjugate acid-base pairs by means of H + and OH - in the external solution and then form buffer layer. The removal of Cr(VI) at a broad range of pH values primarily via hydrogen bonds between -NH- and -OH, and the oxoanion species of Cr(VI) is unusual. This strategy that insulating high concentrations of acids and bases and relying on hydrogen bonds to capture Cr(VI) oxoanions provides a new perspective for actual Cr(VI) wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Water contamination by heavy metals due to various anthropogenic activities has grown to be a serious global issue that needs to be addressed to ensure effective remediation. Recently, Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), a class of porous materials, have emerged as promising candidates for heavy metals removal. In this study, we synthesized and evaluated a novel 1,3,5-benzene tricarboxylic acid (BTC)-based metal-organic framework (UIO-66-BTC(Zr)) for its ability to adsorb heavy metal Pb(II) from wastewater. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization methods were used to demonstrate the effective synthesis of UIO-66-BTC(Zr). The proposed mechanisms for the binding of UIO-66-BTC(Zr) to Pb(II) were identified as chelation/coordination, pore filling, and electrostatic interaction steps. According to our findings, UIO-66-BTC(Zr) has a remarkable Pb(II) adsorption capacity of 881.35 mg/g and exhibits significant selectivity for Pb(II) ions in solution over Cd(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Ni(II) ions. Additionally, the crystal structure of the adsorbed MOF remained stable, and its adsorption performance remained consistent over five cycles, signifying its potential as a sustainable and efficient adsorbent for removing Pb(II) from real-world effluents. The findings of this study open up significant prospects for the application of UIO-66-BTC(Zr) as a new adsorbent in the removal of hazardous Pb(II) contaminants from industrial wastewater. Moreover, this research serves as a crucial basis for advancing studies on cost-effective and environmentally friendly modification/synthesis methods for upscaling MOF production and its wider application for the removal of hazardous contaminants

Abstract:The pre-designable porous structures found in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) render them attractive as a molecular platform for addressing environmental issues such as removal of toxic heavy metal ions from water. However, a rational structural design of COFs in this aspect has not been explored. Here we report the rational design of stable COFs for Hg(II) removal through elaborate structural design and control over skeleton, pore size, and pore walls. The resulting framework is stable under strong acid and base conditions, possesses high surface area, has large mesopores, and contains dense sulfide functional termini on the pore walls. These structural features work together in removing Hg(II) from water and achieve a benchmark system that combines capacity, efficiency, effectivity, applicability, selectivity, and reusability. These results suggest that COFs offer a powerful platform for tailor-made structural design to cope with various types of pollution.

Abstract:Recently, cationic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have drawn considerable attention in the treatment of wastewater containing toxic anions via anion exchange due to the presence of exchangeable anions in their pores. In this work, we employed a neutral imidazole-containing ligand tris(4-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)phenyl)amine (tipa) to construct two novel cationic MOFs, {[Ag3(tipa)2]4·[Ag(tipa)]·(NO3)13·2CH3CN·20H2O} (1) and {[Zn12(H2O)12(tipa)12(SiF6)9]·(SiF6)2·(OH)2·7CH3CN·64H2O} (2). Structural analysis revealed that complex 1 possessed 3D frameworks constructed from intercrossing 2D wave-like grids and highly disordered 1D chains with free NO3- in the channels, while 2 manifested 3D frameworks composed of rotaxane-like subunits with free SiF62- and OH- anions filled in the channels. Subsequently, these two MOFs were studied for their anion exchange properties with Cr2O72- and the results suggested that only compound 1 exhibit adsorption capacity for Cr2O72- with high efficiency and recyclability.

Abstract:The efficient removal of pertechnetate (TcO4(-)) anions from liquid waste or melter off-gas solution for an alternative treatment is one of the promising options to manage (99)Tc in legacy nuclear waste. Safe immobilization of (99)Tc is of major importance because of its long half-life (t1/2 = 2.13 × 10(5) yrs) and environmental mobility. Different types of inorganic and solid-state ion-exchange materials have been shown to absorb TcO4(-) anions from water. However, both high capacity and selectivity have yet to be achieved in a single material. Herein, we show that a protonated version of an ultrastable zirconium-based metal-organic framework can adsorb perrhenate (ReO4(-)) anions, a nonradioactive surrogate for TcO4(-), from water even in the presence of other common anions. Synchrotron-based powder X-ray diffraction and molecular simulations were used to identify the position of the adsorbed ReO4(-) (surrogate for TcO4(-)) molecule within the framework.

Abstract:Utilization of rigid, highly connected organic linkers is critical for the reticular synthesis of functional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). However, highly-stable MOFs (e.g. Al/Cr/Zr-based MOFs) based on rigid ligands with more than 6 coordinating functions have been rarely achieved thus far. Herein, we describe the construction of two bcu Zr-based MOFs (named ZrMOF-1 and ZrMOF-2) from peripherally extended pentiptycene ligands (H8PEP-1 and H8PEP-2) with rigid quadrangular prism shape possessing 8 carboxylic groups at the prism vertices. Particularly, ZrMOF-1 exhibits microporous structure with large Bruno-Emmett-Teller surface area and high water stability, endowing it a promising water harvesting material with a high water uptake capacity of 0.83 g(H2O) g(MOF)(-1) at P/P-0=0.90 and 25 & DEG;C, a steep uptake at a low P/P-0 of 0.30, and excellent durability over 500 water adsorption-desorption cycles. Moreover, self-consistent charge density functional tight-binding calculations were carried out, rationalizing the water adsorbing process and amount in ZrMOF-1.

Abstract:An inexpensive, environmentally benign, and scalable strategy was developed to synthesize UiO-66 derivatives in water at room temperature. Particularly, UiO-66-(COOH)2 with a significant amount of missing Zr6 clusters exhibited a higher surface area and higher pore volume than the same material synthesized at higher temperatures. The presence of both Lewis and Bronsted acidic active sites permits the high affinity for ammonia in both dry and humid environments. Additionally, we have applied our synthetic method to a hydrophobic analogue, UiO-66-F4, which hydrolyzed the hydrophobic VX agent at 50% relative humidity without a buffer and bulk water. The scalable synthesis of UiO-66 analogues in water at room temperature makes these materials practical and promising candidates for toxic chemical removal applications.
Bimetallic Cationic Metal–Organic Frameworks for Selective Dye Adsorption and Effective Cr 2 O 7 2– Removal

Abstract:Herein, we developed a strategy of rational constructing bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and at the same time embedding charges on backbones. Based on the Pearson's hard/soft acid/base (HSAB) principle, soft base (azolate) and hard base (carboxylate) were simultaneously implanted in one building block for MOF construction, which can preferentially coordinate with relative soft acid Cu2+ and hard acid Zr4+ (or Hf4+), respectively. This combination during the self-assembly process not only generates robust coordination bonds but also leaves net charges at the metal clusters, presenting a method for rational design of bimetallic cationic MOFs. Abstract:Due to the rapid advancement in civilization and industrialization, there is an increase in the contamination of water due to dumping or accumulation of waste and harmful products in water resources. As a result, freshwater scarcity has become a major concern worldwide and needs to be addressed by finding ways to avoid, remove, or degrade these harmful contaminants in water. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) act as a potential and promising candidate for removing and degrading harmful organic dyes from wastewater. In this study, we successfully synthesized a new Zirconium-based MOF (Zr-MOF) by the solvothermal method using melamine and trimesic acid as organic moieties. The synthesized Zr-MOF particles are monodispersed in nature with an average hydrodynamic diameter of 200 nm as demonstrated by dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. Its formation and stability were confirmed by spectroscopic techniques including FTIR and XRD methods. The formed MOF displayed tremendous capability in degrading cationic as well as anionic dyes. It shows a surface area of 795.64 m 2 /g. The Zr-MOF shows adsorption percentages of 97.2% and 80.3% for Congo Red (CR) and Toluidine Blue (TB) respectively. Owing to a positively charged surface, the Zr-MOF showed more potential for adsorption of anionic dye because of electrostatic interactions. These MOFs showed 96.4% and 57.9% reusability in the second cycle for CR and TB, respectively, indicating their strong affinity towards anionic dye (CR). We have also reported the adsorption kinetics, stability, and reusability of Zr-MOF in the efficient removal of pollutants from water in this manuscript. Hence, with recent advancements and developments, this study may offer new inspirations for tuning and designing the membrane with superior dye removal which can be extended to laboratory and industrial usage.

Abstract:In consideration of increasingly serious environmental issues, and concern for the environmental impact by heavy metals, materials have been developing to act as adsorbents with high capacity and selectivity for metal ions in the environment. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are potential materials for addressing these environmental challenges as their molecular skeletons can be aimed at particular application by predesigned affine functional groups. Here, two COFs namely COF1 and COF2 with different hydroxyl group distributions were successfully synthesized from 1,3,5-triaminobenzene (TAB) and 2,3-dihydroxyterephthalaldehyde (2,3-Dha) or 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalaldehyde (2,5-Dha), respectively. COF2 exhibited a high adsorption capacity of 649.35 mg g-1 for Cr(VI) in water, performing better than COF1 and most of previously reported adsorbents. COF1, however, performed better than COF2 at a low Cr(VI) concentration (< 20 mg L-1), while COF2 was more efficient at higher concentration due to the more available and homogenic sites provided by the para –OH functional group. Both COFs showed a good performance in removing Cr(VI) within a wide solution pH, and exhibited high selectivity for Cr(VI) in mixed ion solutions. According to FTIR and XPS spectra analysis, the synergism from electrostatic interaction and intramolecular hydrogen bond mainly devoted to the capture of Cr(VI) in acidic or slightly basic solution. Based on the aforementioned research, designing COFs with high selectivity and adsorption capacity for the targeted containments would be a tendency in the further application of adsorption technology.

Abstract:Water vapor sorption by metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has gathered significant interest because of its prominent potential in many applications such as moisture harvesting, dehumidification, heat pump regulation, and hydrolysis catalysis. The ease of functionalization of PCP enables the desired synthesis of three carboxylate linkers, one ditopic and two tetratopic, which further assemble into a total of five Zr-MOFs with distinct topological structures, i.e., a new 2D net (NU-700), fcu (NU-405), flu (NU-1800), she (NU-602), scu (NU-913). Notably, the water vapor sorption performances of all the Zr-MOFs are highly dependent on their framework topology and pore metric, in which NU-602 and NU-913 with uniform 1D channels exhibit S-shaped water sorption isotherms with a steep pore-filling step and high uptake capacities of 0.72 g g-1 at 70% relative humidity (RH) and 0.88 g g-1 at 60% RH, respectively. Moreover, NU-913 displays exceptionally high working capacity of 0.72 g g-1 in the range of 40-60% RH. Additionally, we demonstrate that the hydrolytic stability and water adsorption-desorption recyclability of NU-913 can be remarkably improved by capping the Zr6 nodes with the more hydrophobic agent, trifluoroacetic acid, making it a potential candidate for water sorption-based applications.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on zirconium phosphonates exhibit superior chemical stability suitable for applications under harsh conditions. These compounds mostly exist as poorly crystallized precipitates, and precise structural information has therefore remained elusive. Furthermore, a zero-dimensional zirconium phosphonate cluster acting as secondary building unit has been lacking, leading to poor designability in this system. Herein, we overcome these challenges and obtain single crystals of three zirconium phosphonates that are suitable for structural analysis. These compounds are built by previously unknown isolated zirconium phosphonate clusters and exhibit combined high porosity and ultrastability even in fuming acids. SZ-2 possesses the largest void volume recorded in zirconium phosphonates and SZ-3 represents the most porous crystalline zirconium phosphonate and the only porous MOF material reported to survive in aqua regia. SZ-2 and SZ-3 can effectively remove uranyl ions from aqueous solutions over a wide pH range, and we have elucidated the removal mechanism.
