Abstract:The solid behavior in a turbulent fluidized bed was studied by combination of experimental measurements and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Solid fractions were measured by optical fiber probe under three different superficial gas velocities and three different static bed heights at different axial levels. The experimental results showed that the lateral distribution of solid fraction is core-annulus and the operating conditions can influence the shape of the axial bed void profiles. In the CFD simulations, an Eulerian–Eulerian two-fluid model that incorporates the kinetic theory of granular flow was used to describe the gas–solid two-phase flow in a turbulent fluidized bed. A modified drag model was proposed using a scaling factor to reduce the universal drag laws, which accounts for the effect of particle clustering. The drag model can predict the coexisting regions, the bottom dense, bubbling region and the dilute, dispersed flow region observed in experiments. No significant difference was observed between results after application of laminar and turbulence model. The simulated axial bed void and radial solid fraction fit well with experimental data. The transient local solid fraction and the particle velocity were also investigated.

Abstract:A steady-state multiphase CFD model is proposed for the simulation of core-annulus flow in a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) riser. A CFD model based on Eulerian–Eulerian approach is developed, which incorporates two mechanisms that result in the lateral profiles of solids: mixing of individual particles based on a kinetic theory treatment and mixing of clusters based on a modified k−ε turbulence model. The steady-state model can simulate the core-annulus flow more efficiently, which can eliminate the unrealistic sensitivity and need less computational resources comparing with other transient models. This model shows more potential for the simulation of commercial fluidized equipments. The sensitivity of the model predictions involving four parameters indicates that ew and φ have weak influence on the correctly prediction of core-annulus flow, while the model remains a certain of sensitivity to es and Cs. The results predicted by the model show good agreement with experimental data under different operating conditions reported by Tartan and Gidaspow (2004).

Abstract:Solids oscillation circulation is an unstable solids flow behavior exhibited during the start-up process of a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) with sweeping bend return. It results in significant pressure fluctuation and particle loss, further brings about difficulties in establishing a stable solids circulation and blockage of the heat exchanger for recycling gas. However, the oscillation mechanism and hydrodynamic characteristics of the solids oscillation circulation are still far from understanding, since the variation of solids transfer rate, gas flow rate and their complex interactions are still unknown. In this work, the Eulierian-Eulerian method has been employed for the simulation of solids oscillation circulation in a two-dimension (2D) CFB. The results indicate that solids oscillation circulation is triggered by the formation of slugging in the downer, which leads to a decrease of the downer pressure drop and a sharp increase of the riser bypass gas velocity. Besides, intense slugging fluidization is observed in the downer at larger valve opening or higher inlet gas velocity. Moreover, statistical hydrodynamic shows uniform lateral solids volume distributions in the riser and downer. Solids fluctuating energy spectrum is generated to explore the turbulent characteristics, a segment phenomenon is observed in the inertial sub-region. In addition, the deviation of scale index in the inertial region form the Kolmogorov −5/3 scaling law indicates the flow intermittency. According to the wavelet analysis of particle fluctuation velocity, the particle-particle and particle-wall interaction are found to be the main reason for the flow intermittency.

Abstract:Particle and bubble motion plays an important role in determining the hydrodynamic characteristics of a fluidized system. The dynamic parameters of a fluidized bed are reflection of the complex correlation between particle–particle and particle–bubble in a system. A two-dimensional Eulerian–Eulerian model integrating the kinetic theory of granular flow is used to simulate the bubble and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) particle dynamic behavior in a gas–solid fluidized bed. The simulated method is validated by pressure fluctuation experiment. The computed vertical turbulent energy spectrum of particles is applied to identify the particle motion intensity and the inhomogeneity of turbulent energy dissipation. The energy spectrum captures the Levy–Kolmogorov law in inertial range at high frequency. Furthermore, the flatness factors of wavelet decomposition coefficients of particle fluctuation velocity are for the first time introduced to analyze the intermittence caused by coherent structures in the flow field. The results show that the intermittence in dissipation range is much stronger than that in energy-containing and inertial range, and reinforces rapidly as the radial distance and the bed height increase. Moreover, the acoustic emission (AE) energy is found to be able to indicate the flow regimes. By combing granular temperature and AE energy, the relationship between the spatial distribution of granular temperature and the flow regimes is established. To get more detail of bubble motion behavior, the power spectrum of voidage fluctuation is analyzed. This work provides valuable insights into the dynamic characteristics and the flow field information of a gas–solid fluidized bed by CFD simulation.

Abstract:An attempt has been made to model the flow structure and to predict heat transfer coefficients in a gas–solid bubbling fluidized bed operated with a central jet using a two fluid model with closures from the kinetic theory of granular flow. Quantities such as the fluid-to-particle heat transfer coefficient are not easily obtained practically from experiments with a high degree of accuracy thereby making computational methods attractive. The CFD model has been verified using experimental bubble properties obtained from the literature. Axial and lateral normal Reynolds stresses, energy spectra and granular temperatures have been computed. The simulations show that the maximum local instantaneous fluid-to-particle heat transfer coefficient occurs in the wake of the bubble. Heat transfer coefficients at the center of the bed exhibit high oscillations compared to the near wall region. However time averaged values in the near wall region are larger compared to the bed center. The average heat transfer coefficient exhibits a maximum value with the variation of the jet velocity.

Abstract:In order to simulate gas-solids flows with complex geometry, the boundary element method was incorporated into the implementation of a combined model of computational fluid dynamics and discrete element method. The resulting method was employed to simulate hydrodynamics in a fluidized bed with immersed tubes. The transient simulation results showed particle and bubble dynamics. The bubble coalescence and break-up behavior when passing the immersed tubes was successfully predicted. The gassolid flow pattern in the fluidized bed is changed greatly because of the immersed tubes. As particles and gas are come in contact with the immersed tubes, the gas bubbles will be deformed. The collisions between particles and tubes will make the tubes surrounded by air pockets most of the time and this is unfavorable for the heat transfer between particles and tubes.

Abstract:In the Eulerian-Lagrangian framework, the dense gas-solid motions in the conceptually-similar gas-solid fluidizing system — internally circulating fluidized bed (ICFB) and circulating fluidized bed (CFB) are modeled using discrete element method coupled with large eddy simulation. In the coupling procedure, the gas motion is resolved at the computational cell level while solid motion is tracked each individually. After validating the proposed model, the intrinsic mechanisms governing the internal movement of gas-solid phases are explored. In the ICFB, the vertical component of gas or solid flux is extremely larger than its lateral one. Large flux of gas phase mainly concentrates in the right region of each chamber. Vigorous transportation of solid phase locates in the two sides of the reactor chamber. The falling intensity of solid motion near the wall of heat exchange chamber enlarges along the bed height. In the CFB, typical internal circulation property of solid phase can be observed in the riser. Moreover, non-uniform distributions of gas-solid properties appear in the riser especially the bottom region of this component. Strong back-mixing of solid phase can be observed in the vicinity of wall.

Abstract:This work explores the ability of the two-fluid-model (TFM) to model the dynamical and turbulent features of a pseudo 2D gas-solid fluidized bed operated under slugging conditions. 2D and 3D numerical simulations are performed to investigate the effect of the bed thickness on predicted quantities. Hi fidelity raw pressure drop and particle velocity data from the NETL small scale challenge problem is processed and used to validate the CFD model. Our work shows that the differences between 2D and 3D simulations in predicting the fluidized bed dynamics using pressure fluctuation data is minimal. However the effect of the bed thickness on turbulent properties namely the normal Reynolds stresses, turbulent kinetic energy, granular temperatures is significant. Taking into account the bed thickness does not necessarily improve the model predictions of all the dynamic and turbulent features. Furthermore mean profiles alone are not sufficient to validate TFM models as is quite common in the open literature. Mixing in the slugging bed is predominantly due to coherent meso-scale structures (voids and slugs) rather than individual particles as revealed from computed granular temperatures.

Abstract:Hydrodynamics in liquid-solid circulating fluidized beds (LSCFBs) are modelled and simulated by computational fluid dynamic (CFD) technique. Turbulence model and kinetic theory descriptions of granular flow are incorporated in the governing equations to model the high Reynolds number two-phase flows with strong particle-particle interactions in LSCFBs. Liquid-solid upflows under wide operating conditions, different particle properties and different bed dimensions are investigated by time-dependent simulations using commercial software, FLUENT 4.5.6. The model predictions show good agreements with the experimental data and reasonable trends when different fluids/solids and bed dimensions are applied. Stronger nonuniformities in flow structures are found in larger particle systems, with larger fluid/solids density ratios and/or larger diameter columns.

Abstract:Computational fluid dynamics combined with discrete element method is employed to investigate the pressure signals and solid back-mixing behavior in a three-dimensional full-loop circulating fluidized bed operating in fast fluidization (FF) and dilute phase transport (DPT) regimes. The minimum fluidization velocity is successfully predicted after model validation. The gas solid full-loop hydrodynamics is accurately captured. Pressure signals under different fluidization regimes shed light on the flow dynamics. The wider solid residence time distribution (RTD) curve with a longer tail in the FF regime indicates that solid flow closes to perfect mixing flow, and more severe solid back-mixing is due to solid internal circulation existing in the riser. The smaller solid RTD curve with, a short tail in the DPT regime suggests that the solid flow deviates a little from plug flow) and a small-scale solid back-mixing is due to geometry restraint and recirculating gas-solid flow occurring in the lower and upper regions of the riser.

Abstract: The dimension of the hot circulation loop of the supercritical CFB boiler is large, and there are many unknowns and challenges that should be identified and resolved during the development. In order to realize a reasonable and reliable design of the hot circulation loop, numerical simulation of gas-solid flow in a supercritical CFB boiler was conducted by using FLUENT software. The working condition of hot circulation loop flow field, gas-solid flow affected by three unsymmetrical cyclones, air distribution and pressure drop in furnace were analyzed. The simulation results showed that the general arrangement of the 600MWe supercritical CFB boiler is reasonable.

Abstract:Gas-particle flow behavior in the riser section of a circulating fluidized bed(CFB) was simulated using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) software-Fluent.The kinetic theory of granular flow(KTGF) was applied to describe the granular pressure and stress to close the governing equations.Fluid catalytic cracking(FCC) particles and air were used as the solid and gas phases,respectively.The part-slip boundary condition of solid was described using the user defined function in the Fluent.To identify the validity of the model and various conditions adopted in this simulation,gas and particle flow profiles were obtained for time-averaged radial solid volume fraction and axial bed pressure drop.Furthermore,the typical core-annular flow structure was observed.The granular temperature which is the scale of the fluctuant energy of single particle could be predicted by simulation.It was investigated that the granular temperature was related with solid volume fraction.When solid volume fraction ranged from 0.01 to 0.05,granular temperature was in the transition region from dispersed values to well-regulated ones.

Abstract:The hydrodynamics of gas-solids flow in a scale model of 130t/h rectangular cross-section circulating fluidized bed were predicted by Fluent software.The modeling predictions compared reasonably well with experimental data.Particle movements in dense region were inclined to impact on back wall with the expanding cross-section on back side.It's important to prevent the wear of expanding cross-section.Modeling and experimental results in transition region show that irregular structure in CFB would influence particle movements in this region greatly and cause local eddy which would cause acute wear on this cross-section.It's an effective step to adopt flat transition to reduce abrasion.Prediction and experimental results also show that outlet arrangement have important impact on whole system.

Abstract:Circulating fluidized beds have been widely utilized in many industrial applications due to their excellent heat and mass transfer performance. By means of computational fluid dynamics coupled with discrete element method, numerical simulation of the three-dimensionalfull-loop circulating fluidized bed with six parallel cyclones is conducted, with a focus on the cluster behavior, flux and granular temperature. The results agree with past studies that the particle clusters dynamically evolve with time and space, and the upward-rising and downward-falling clusters tend to be in respectively the central core and near-wall regions. Notably, the frequency distribution of the cluster volume is shown to be approximately normal; and the aspect ratios of the clusters are consistently larger than one, and tend to increase before decreasing with riser height. Furthermore, the slip velocity is the most significant in the cross-sectional center of the riser and upper part of the cyclone. Finally, the granular temperatures are greatest at the cross-sectional center of the riser inlet, at the top of four of the six cyclones, and also at the middle one-third portion of the standpipe height. Moreover, the granular temperature of the solid phase increases with solid concentration in the dilute regions, but decreases with solid concentration in the dense regions. The results obtained provide insights regarding the important aspects in the CFB with multiple cyclones.

Abstract:Gas–solid flow dynamics is numerically simulated in an internally circulating fluidized bed (ICFB) featuring a centrally located baffle plate and uneven aeration. Its detailed features are derived using the computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method (CFD-DEM). The gas motion is resolved by means of large eddy simulation (LES) while the dynamics of solid phase is handled by the soft-sphere model. The internal circulation of the solids (spherical particles, with diameter of 1.2mm and density 1000kg/m3) is modeled to clarify the flow characteristics of the bed for different design or operating parameters, such as superficial gas velocity, gap height, inclination angle of the gas distributor, baffle plate or side wall of the bed. Both the gas–solid flow and the underlying mechanisms of solids circulation are addressed together with the simulation results. Meanwhile, the operational control behavior of different parameters is quantified by estimating both the solids circulation flux (SCF) and the gas bypassing flux (GBF). The computational results indicate that the performance of the bed can easily be regulated by adjusting the aeration to each chamber of the bed and that within the range tested, increasing gap height enhances solids circulation and suppresses gas bypassing. There is an optimal value for the inclination angle of both side wall and baffle plate. However, increasing the inclination angle of the gas distributor continuously suppresses solids circulation. Furthermore, the residence time of solids in each chamber is figured out and its variations with these design and operating parameters are examined.

Abstract:Bubbling and turbulent fluidization are two typical fluidization regimes in fluidized beds. Under the Eulerian-Lagrangian framework, the heat transfer properties in a bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) and gas-solid behaviors in a three-dimensional (3-D) circulating fluidized bed (CFB) are investigated respectively by using Discrete Element Method-Large-eddy Simulation (DEM-LES) coupling approach. The gas behavior is resolved at computational grid level and the solid behavior is handled at particle-scale level, moreover, inter-particle and inter-phase heat transfer are involved. Results show that the tube bundles make the solid distribution more uniform. Staggered tube bundle BFB achieves higher heat transfer performance. In the CFB, solid internal circulations are observed in the riser. Moreover, the inventories in six standpipes differ even though the geometry of the apparatus is symmetric. The solid back-mixing occurs mainly in the four corners of the riser. In each external circulating system, pressure drop forming between the inlet of riser and the surface of packed beds in standpipes becomes the driven force for solid circulations in the closed loop. In summary, all these crucial mechanisms shed light on the design, operation and scale-up of fluidized beds in practical engineering fields.

Abstract:Three-dimensionally coupled computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and discrete element method (DEM) are used to investigate the gas–solid hydrodynamics and mixing characteristics of a three-dimensional rectangular bubbling fluidized bed. The numerical study is conducted referring to the quasi-3D experimental apparatus investigated by Goldschmidt et al. [1]. The simulation results turn out that time-averaged solid volume fraction and instantaneous particle height agree well with the experimental data. To investigate the solid behavior, the solid velocity and flux distribution are extracted and the influence of the gas velocity on the solid velocity is discussed. It is found that higher gas velocity induces the formation of double-recirculation pattern in which solid phase mainly moves from the near wall region to the central region in the lower bed and oppositely in the upper bed. At the same time, the solid mixing is faster under higher inlet velocity, and that particles in vertical directions tend to mix better than those in lateral directions. At last, we find the particle dispersion coefficient is very anisotropic in three normal directions. In accordance with the results of most experiments, the geometry structure strongly influenced the coefficient value. We also find when inlet gas velocity is higher, the dispersion coefficient increases, for the particle velocities are higher due to greater momentum exchange.

Abstract:The gas-solid flow of a 600 MW supercritical circulating fluidized bed boiler with pant leg and six cyclones was simulated using Fluent software. The two-fluid model (TFM) approach was carried out to represent the axial and radial distribution of particles, as well as the nonuniformity of the six cyclones. Results show that the solids suspension density along the furnace height is a dense-dilute two-phase distribution. A backflow of particles was observed on the interior wall in the pant leg region. There is a double core-annulus distribution in the dilute region and a solids backflow on the furnace division wall, front wall and rear wall. Solids suspension densities on the division wall and between the wall's gap are higher than those on the furnace walls. They also have higher values in the areas between the suspended panels compared to those out of the panels. The maximum mass flux appreas in the middle one, however there is no significant difference among the six cyclones. © 2011 Chin. Soc. for Elec. Eng.
