Abstract:A step‐economical and operationally simple nickel‐catalyzed cross‐electrophile coupling of aryl phosphates with aryl bromides through C‐O bond cleavage, which precluded the employment of relatively moisture‐labile and unreadily available organometallics, was developed. The reaction proceeded smoothly in the presence of magnesium turnings and lithium chloride in THF to afford the corresponding biaryls in moderate to good yields with reasonable functionality tolerance.

Abstract:We report the amination of aryl carbamates using nickel-catalysis. The methodology is broad in scope with respect to both coupling partners and delivers aminated products in synthetically useful yields. Computational studies provide the full catalytic cycle of this transformation, and suggest that reductive elimination is the rate-determining step. Given that carbamates are easy to prepare, robust, inert to Pd-catalysis, and useful for arene functionalization, these substrates are particularly attractive partners for use in synthesis. The sequential use of carbamate functionalization/site-selective cross-coupling processes highlights the utility of this methodology.

Abstract:Pyridine-bridged bis-benzimidazolylidene nickel complexes exhibited very high catalytic activity toward cross coupling of inactive（hetero）aryl benzylic ammonium salts with（hetero）aryl and alkenyl boronic acids under mild reaction conditions.Even at 2 mol% catalyst loading,a wide range of substrates for both coupling partners with different steric and electronic properties were well tolerated.

Abstract:A nickel-catalyzed direct cross-coupling of unactivated aryl fluorides with aryl bromides is realized. The one-pot reaction, which avoids the use of preformed and sensitive organometallic reagents, proceeds effectively via C-F bond cleavage at room temperature in THF in the presence of the phosphine ligand and magnesium powder (with or without TMSCl) to produce the desired biaryls in modest to good yields.

Abstract:We report a nickel-catalyzed reductive cross-coupling between readily available nitroarenes and phosphine oxides to approach phosphinic amides. This reaction used NiCl2/Xantphos as a catalyst, zinc as a reductant, and TMSCl as an additive, resulting in various phosphinic amides with moderate to good yields. Furthermore, a mechanism was proposed according to control experiments.

Abstract:The synthesis of aryl phosphonates via nickel and palladium‐catalyzed cross‐coupling of aryl fluorosulfonates and phosphites is described. The products were obtained in good to excellent yields under mild conditions with broad functional group compatibility, employing either Pd(OAc) 2 and DPEPhos or the readily available NiCl 2 (dme) and Xantphos as catalytic systems. Noteworthily, the present C(sp 2 )–P bond formation method could be applied to the direct conversion of phenols to the corresponding aryl phosphonates in one pot via reaction of phenols with SO 2 F 2 and subsequent palladium‐catalyzed cross‐coupling.

Abstract:Nickel-catalyzed cross-electrophile coupling (XEC) reactions of (hetero)aryl electrophiles represent appealing alternatives to palladium-catalyzed methods for biaryl synthesis, but they often generate significant quantities of homocoupling and/or proto-dehalogenation side products. In this study, an informer library of heteroaryl chloride and aryl bromide coupling partners is used to identify Ni-catalyzed XEC conditions that access high selectivity for the cross-product when using equimolar quantities of the two substrates. Two different catalyst systems are identified that show complementary scope and broad functional-group tolerance, and time-course data suggest the two methods follow different mechanisms. A NiBr2/terpyridine catalyst system with Zn as the reductant converts the aryl bromide into an aryl-zinc intermediate that undergoes in situ coupling with 2-chloropyridines, while a NiBr2/bipyridine catalyst system with tetrakis(dimethylamino)ethylene as the reductant uses FeBr2 and NaI as additives to achieve selective cross-coupling.

Abstract:5-Cyanoimidazole was identified as an inexpensive ligand for nickel-catalyzed cross-electrophile couplings by screening a diverse set of pharmaceutical compound library. A strategic screening approach led to the discovery of this novel ligand, which was successfully applied in the preparation of various alkylated arene products with good to high yields. Furthermore, the properties of this ligand allowed expanding the scope of reductive couplings to challenging substrates, such as sterically hindered neopentyl halides, which are known to generate motifs that are prevalent in biologically active molecules.
