Abstract:BiPd2O4 and PbPd2O4 were synthesized at high pressure of 6 GPa and 1500 K. Crystal structures of BiPd2O4 and PbPd2O4 were studied with synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. BiPd2O4 is isostructural with PbPt2O4 and crystallizes in a triclinic system (space group P (1) over bar, a = 5.73632(4) angstrom, b = 6.02532(5) angstrom, c = 6.41100(5) angstrom, alpha = 114.371(1)degrees, beta = 95.910(1)degrees, and gamma = 111.540(1)degrees at 293 K). PbPd2O0 is isostructural with LaPd2O4 and BaAu2O4 and crystallizes in a tetragonal system (space group I4(1)/a, a = 5.76232(1) angstrom, and c = 9.98347(2) angstrom at 293 K). BiPd2O4 shows ordering of Pd2+ and Pd4+ ions, and it is the third example of compounds with ordered arrangements of Pd2+ and Pd4+ in addition to Ba2Hg3Pd7O4 and KPd2O3. In PbPd2O4, the following charge distribution is realized Pb4+Pd22+O4. PbPd2O4 shows a structural phase transition from I4(1)/a to I2/a at about 240 K keeping basically the same structural arrangements (space group I2/a, a = 5.77326(1) angstrom, b = 9.95633(2) angstrom, c = 5.73264(1) angstrom, beta = 90.2185(2)degrees at 112 K). BiPd2O4 is nonmagnetic while PbPd2O4 exhibits a significant temperature-dependent paramagnetic moment of 0.46 mu(B)/f.u. between 2 and 350 K. PbPd2O4 shows metallic conductivity, and BiPd2O4 is a semiconductor between 2 and 400 K.

Abstract:In-situ time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction and electrical resistance measurements are performed to determine the behaviors of PbS under pressure and temperature up to 5 GPa and 773 K. The phase diagram in our experimental range is shown based on electrical resistance measurements. Both the two approaches indicate that only the starting cubic PbS phase remains stable when the temperature reaches above 573 K. The Rietveld refinements of the neutron diffraction patterns verify that the orthorhombic (ortho) PbS phase has a Cmcm space group. The fitting of experimental data with the Birch–Murnaghan equation of state at 300 K, yields the bulk modulus of the cubic phase as K0T = 60.0 ± 0.5 GPa with its pressure derivative K0′ fixed to 4.2.

Abstract:The novel A(2)B(4)O(7)-type compound Pb2Co2O7 was synthesized at 8 GPa and 1673 K. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction shows a cubic pyrochlore structure with space group Fd (3) over barm. Rietveld structural analysis reveals a large cation mixed occupancy at both A and B sites by about 40%, the greatest value found in the pyrochlore family. In combination with the X-ray absorption spectroscopy results, the specific chemical composition and charge states are determined to be (Co0.6Pb0.4)(3+)(2)(Pb0.6Co0.4)O-4+(2)7 in which both the A-site Co3+ and the B-site Co4+ are low-spin. Due to the tetrahedral geometric frustration effects as well as the random Co4+ and Pb4+ distribution at the B site, spin glassy behavior is well observed following the conventional critical slowing down feature in Pb2Co2O7.

Abstract:We have systematically grown large single crystals of layered compound beta-PdBi2, both the hole-doped PdBi2-xPbx and the electron-doped NaxPdBi2, and studied their magnetic and transport properties. Hall-effect measurement on PdBi2, PdBi1.8Pb0.2, and Na0.057PdBi2 shows that the charge transport is dominated by electrons in all of the samples. The electron concentration is substantially reduced upon Pb-doping in PdBi2-xPbx and increased upon Na-intercalation in NaxPdBi2, indicating the effective hole-doping by Pb and electron-doping by Na. We observed a monotonic decrease of superconducting transition temperature (Tc) from 5.4K in undoped PdBi2 to less than 2K for x > 0.35 in hole-doped PdBi2-xPbx. Meanwhile, a rapid decrease of Tc with the Na intercalation is also observed in the electron-doped NaxPdBi2, which is in disagreement with the theoretical expectation. In addition, both the magnetoresistance and Hall resistance further reveal evidence for a possible spin density wave (SDW)-like transition below 50K in the Na-intercalated PdBi2 sample. The complete phase diagram is thus established from hole-doping to electron-doping. Meanwhile, high pressure study of the undoped PdBi2 shows that the Tc is linearly suppressed under pressure with a dTc/dP coefficient of -0.28K/GPa.

Abstract:Using the additional parameter pressure (Walker-type multianvil device), the lead(II) oxidotellurate(VI) PbTeO 4 was synthesized at conditions of 8 GPa and 750 °C, and for the first time its crystal structure was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. PbTeO 4 crystallizes with four formula units in the monoclinic space group I 2/ a with unit cell parameters a = 5.4142(4), b = 4.9471(4), c = 12.0437(11) Å, β = 99.603(3)°, and V = 318.07(5) Å 3 . UV-Vis measurements revealed a UV transparency down to 200 nm. From the diffuse reflectance data experimental band gaps (E g(direct) = 2.9 eV / E g(indirect) = 2.8 eV) were determined and compared with calculated values. Temperature-dependent X-ray powder diffraction and complementary thermal analysis measurements revealed a stability range of PbTeO 4 up to 625 °C. Additionally, theoretical calculations at DFT level of theory were carried out to obtain the electronic band structure, X-ray powder diffraction patterns, IR/Raman vibrational spectra and Mulliken partial charges. The electron localization function (ELF) was visualized to emphasize the presence of the electron lone pair E in the coordination sphere of the Pb II atom.

First-Principles Study of High-Pressure Phase Stability and Electron Properties of Be-P Compounds

Abstract:New, stable stoichiometries in Be-P systems are investigated up to 100 GPa by the CALYPSO structure prediction method. Along with the BeP2-I41/amd structure, we identify two novel compounds of Be3P2-P-421m and Be3P2-C2/m. It should be noted that the Be-P compounds are predicted to be energetically unfavorable above 40 GPa. As can be seen, interesting structures may be experimentally synthesizable at modest pressure. Our results indicate that at 33.2 GPa, the most stable ambient-pressure tetragonal Be3P2-P-421m transitions to the monoclinic Be3P2-C2/m structure. Moreover, the predicted Be3P2-P-421m and Be3P2-C2/m phases are energetically favored compared with the Be3P2-Ia-3 structure synthesized experimentally. Electronic structure calculations reveal that BeP2-I41/amd, Be3P2-P-421m, and Be3P2-C2/m are all semiconductors with a narrow band gap. The present findings offer insight and guidance for exploration toward further fundamental understanding and potential applications in the semiconductor field.

Abstract:Abstract Intermetallic compounds (IMCs) with fixed chemical composition and ordered crystallographic arrangement are highly desirable platforms for elucidating the precise correlation between structures and performances in catalysis. However, diffusing a metal atom into a lattice of another metal to form a controllably regular metal occupancy remains a huge challenge. Herein, we develop a general and tractable solvothermal method to synthesize the Bi-Pd IMCs family, including Bi 2 Pd, BiPd, Bi 3 Pd 5 , Bi 2 Pd 5 , Bi 3 Pd 8 and BiPd 3 . By employing electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction as a model reaction, we deeply elucidated the interplay between Bi-Pd IMCs and key intermediates. Specific surface atomic arrangements endow Bi-Pd IMCs different relative surface binding affinities and adsorption configuration for *OCHO, *COOH and *H intermediate, thus exhibiting substantially selective generation of formate (Bi 2 Pd), CO (BiPd 3 ) and H 2 (Bi 2 Pd 5 ). This work provides a comprehensive understanding of the specific structure-performance correlation of IMCs, which serves as a valuable paradigm for precisely modulating catalyst material structures.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive experimental and computational study on A -site ordered perovskite oxides YCu3Co4O12, LaCu3Co4O12 , and BiCu3Co4O12 including synthesis, transport, and magnetic characterization, high-pressure application, K - and L -edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), Co 2p core-level x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) and +U scheme. An insulating behavior with a valence state of A3+Cu3∼3+Co4∼3+O122− is found for the three compounds at ambient and high-pressure conditions (up to ∼55 GPa). A DFT calculation for YCu3Co4O12 uncovers the energetics of the Cu–O and Co–O bonding formation and crystal-field splitting, leading to a narrow-gap electronic structure with a hybrid orbital and element character near the Fermi energy. The stable low-spin configuration of the Co ion is studied in comparison to a canonical perovskite cobaltite LaCoO3 . A DFT+DMFT analysis of the Cu spin-correlation function indicates that the Zhang-Rice singlet description for the CuO4 plaquette is valid, while a hybridization with the Co 3d orbitals also contributes to the Cu spin screening. The presence of the hybridization between the Co and Cu orbitals is shown by the DFT+DMFT analysis for the Co L2,3 XAS experimental spectra that exhibit unusual broad line shape. Abstract:Perovskite-type oxides have been the subject of intense research due to their various fascinating physical properties stemming from their charge degree of freedom. PbFeO3 has an unusual Pb0.52+Pb0.54+Fe3+O3 charge distribution with a long-ranged ordering of Pb2+ and Pb4+ and two inequivalent Fe3+ sites in a perovskite structure. Combined synchrotron X-ray diffraction and M & ouml;ssbauer spectroscopy revealed a change to an orthorhombic GdFeO3 structure with a unique Fe3+ site and randomly distributed Pb2+ and Pb4+ at 29.0 GPa, namely, pressure-induced amorphization of Pb2+ and Pb4+. The absence of a charge transfer transition to the Pb2+Fe4+O3 phase, which was expected from the comparison with PbCrO3 and PbCoO3, was verified using ab initio density functional theory calculations in the range of 0-70 GPa.

Abstract:Although the chemistry of Pd(0), Pd(I) and Pd(II) is well established, high oxidation state Pd(IV) complexes are less well-known. This situation has highly changed in recent years. Many well-defined Pd(IV) complexes has been isolated and characterized, providing evidence for a series of proposed Pd(II)/Pd(IV) catalytic reactions. A deep understanding of the behavior of Pd(IV) complexes could lead to the design and development of novel reactions that could not be accessed by traditional Pd(0)/Pd(II) chemistry. This critical review describes the stoichiometric reactions of Pd(IV) complexes and discusses their potential mechanism in catalytic reactions (137 references).

Abstract:As one of important semiconductor photocatalysts, bismuth oxide chloride (BiOCl) crystallizes into a tetragonal matlockite structure with the space group of P4/nmm. In this work, the in situ high-pressure angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction experiments and the first-principle calculations were performed on BiOCl, in order to explore the crystal and electronic structure evolution processes upon compression. At 15.1 GPa, BiOCl undergoes a tetragonal to tetragonal isostructural phase transition and then completely transforms into a high-pressure tetragonal phase at 22.1 GPa, which adopts the same crystal structure as that of the low-pressure tetragonal phase. According to the ab initio calculation results, the redistribution of Bader charge between the Bi, O, Cl ions under high pressure induces the isostructural phase transition in BiOCl and causes the different electronic structures between the high-pressure and low-pressure phases. Abstract:In the present work, the variable-composition crystal structure prediction algorithm USPEX was combined with first-principles calculations to systematically explore stable PdHxcompounds in the pressure range from 0 to 100 GPa. The predicted structures are PdH, Pd4H5, Pd2H, and PdH4, of which PdH has previously been synthesized. The electronic structures show that these compounds can be metallic, with Pd states dominating at the Fermi level. However, the hydrogen atoms do not play a main role in the electronic properties; their vibrations do contribute to the electron-phonon coupling. The predicted Pd4H5has a superconducting transition temperature of ~13 K, which is higher than that of PdH (~8 K in the experiment). Additionally, PdH , Pd4H5, Pd2H, and PdH4can be classified as phonon-mediated superconductors, falling into the lowcoupling regime. Our results demonstrate that as the hydrogen concentration is increased in PdHx compounds, the superconducting transition temperature rises due to hydrogen vibrations, which is consistent with the experiment. Hence, the present study paves the way for discovering new PdHx compounds with promising superconducting transition temperatures.

Abstract:A stable organometallic Pd (Ⅱ) compound Pd(ptac-C,N)(acac-O,O) (Hacac = acetyl acetone, Hptac = 3-(2-pyridinethioxy)-acac, formula: C15H17NO4SPd, Mr = 413.76) 1 has been synthesized and its crystal structure was determined by X-ray crystallography. The crystal is of monoclinic with space group C2/c, a = 17.9342(3), b = 17.7791(4), c = 13.1800(1) A。, a = 128.400(1)b, V = 3293.5(1) A。3, Z = 8, Dc = 1.669 g/cm3, F(000) = 1664, u= 1.269 mm-1, R = 0.0261 and wR = 0.0710 for 2653 observed reflections (I > 2(I). There exist two Pd rings in the title compound, C(14)-O(4)-Pd-O(3)-C(12)-C(13) and C(1)-N-Pd-C(8)-S, with the palladium atom taking a square-planar coordination. Two oxygen atoms from the acetyl acetone ligand (Pd-O, 1.991(2) and 2.036(2uA。), one N atom (Pd-N 2.019 A。) and the r-carbon atom (Pd-C 2.067(3) A。) from the ptac ligand are coordinated to Pd.

Abstract:The high-pressure behavior of PbMoO4 has been studied by in situ synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction (XRD) combined with a diamond anvil cell (DAC) up to approximate to 38GPa. At room temperature, phase transitions of PbMoO4 from the scheelite structure to the wolframite structure and then to amorphization are detected at approximate to 8.3 and approximate to 35GPa, respectively. Pressure-volume relationships of PbMoO4 are described by the Birch-Murnaghan equation of state, giving V-0=355.8(3)angstrom(3), K-0=73(4)GPa, K-0=5(1) (third order) for the scheelite-structured phase and V-0=166(1)angstrom(3), K-0=85(4)GPa, K-0=4 (fixed) (second order) for the wolframite-structured phase. When PbMoO4 undergoes the high-temperature annealing treatment at approximate to 17.5GPa, it will dissociate into assembly of the PbO (Pbcm and Z=4) and PbMo2O7 (P2(1)/c and Z=4).
