Abstract:Single-crystal Ca(10)(Pt(4)As(8))(Fe(1.8)Pt(0.2)As(2))(5) superconducting (SC) nanowhiskers with widths down to hundreds of nanometers were successfully grown in a Ta capsule in an evacuated quartz tube by a flux method. Magnetic and electrical properties measurements demonstrate that the whiskers have excellent crystallinity with critical temperature of up to 33 K, upper critical field of 52.8 T, and critical current density of J(c) of 6.0 × 10(5) A/cm(2) (at 26 K). Since cuprate high-T(c) SC whiskers are fragile ceramics, the present intermetallic SC whiskers with high T(c) have better opportunities for device applications. Moreover, although the growth mechanism is not understood well, the technique can be potentially useful for growth of other whiskers containing toxic elements.

Abstract:We investigated the upper critical fields of Ca10(Pt4As8)(Fe2–xPtxAs2)5 superconducting whiskers. The whiskers consist of several wire-like grains with diameter of around 200 nm, joined by grain boundaries whose misorientation angles are less than 5∘. The upper critical fields along c-axis and in ab-plane were observed as 49 T at 12 K and 50 T at 22 K, respectively, which can be extrapolated to ∼81 and ∼133 T at 0 K. The whisker demonstrated weak anisotropic factor and almost constant value of ∼2 below 15 K. The impressive transport properties of the whisker may find applications in fields like superconducting micro- and meso-structure systems.

Abstract:High-quality and sizable single crystals are crucial for studying the intrinsic properties of unconventional superconductors, which are lacking in the 1111 phase of the Fe-based superconductors. Here we report the successful growth of CaFeAsF single crystals with the sizes of 1-2 mm using the self-flux method. Owning to the availability of the high-quality single crystals, the structure and transport properties were investigated with a high reliability. The structure was refined by using the single-crystal x-ray diffraction data, which confirms the reports earlier on the basis of powder data. A clear anomaly associated with the structural transition was observed at 121 K from the resistivity, magnetoresistance, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Another kink-feature at 110 K, most likely an indication of the antiferromagnetic transition, was also detected in the resistivity data. Our results supply a basis to propel the physical investigations on the 1111 phase of the Fe-based superconductors.

Abstract:Sizable single-crystalline samples of Ca-10(Pt3As8)((Fe1-xPtx)(2)As-2)(5) (the 10-3-8 phase) with 0 <= x < 0.1 have been grown and have been systematically characterized via x-ray diffraction, magnetic, and transport measurements. The unsubstituted sample is a heavily doped semiconductor with no sign of magnetic order down to 2 K. With increasing Pt content, the metallic behavior appears, and superconductivity is realized for x >= 0.023. T-c rises to its maximum of approximately 13.6 K at the doping level of x similar to 0.06 and then decreases for higher x values. The electronic phase diagram of the 10-3-8 phase was mapped out based on the magnetic and transport measurements. The mass anisotropy parameter Gamma similar to 10, obtained from resistive measurements in magnetic fields, indicates a relatively large anisotropy in the iron-based superconductor family. This strong two-dimensional character may lead to the absence of magnetic order. A linear T dependence of susceptibility at high temperatures is observed, indicating that spin fluctuations exist in the underdoped region as in most of the Fe-pnictide superconductors.

Abstract: Millimeter sized single crystals of CaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$AsF were grown using a self-flux method. It is found that high-quality single crystals can be grown from three approaches with different initial raw materials. The chemical compositions and crystal structure were characterized carefully. The c-axis lattice constant is suppressed by the Co substitution. Superconductivity with the critical transition $T_c$ as high as 21 K was confirmed by both the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements in the sample with $x$ = 0.12. Moreover, it is found that $T_c$ can be enhanced for about 1 K under the very small hydrostatic pressure of 0.22 GPa, which is more quickly than that reported in the polycrystalline samples. Our results is a promotion for the physical investigations of 1111 phase iron-pnictide superconductors.

Abstract:Ca10(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 is the parent compound for a class of Fe-based high-temperature superconductors where superconductivity with transition temperatures up to 30 K can be introduced by partial element substitution. We present a combined high-resolution high-energy x-ray diffraction and elastic neutron scattering study on a Ca10(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 single crystal. This study reveals the microscopic nature of two distinct and continuous phase transitions to be very similar to other Fe-based high-temperature superconductors: an orthorhombic distortion of the high-temperature tetragonal Fe-As lattice below T_S = 110(2) K followed by stripe-like antiferromagnetic ordering of the Fe moments below T_N = 96(2) K. These findings demonstrate that major features of the Fe-based high-temperature superconductors are very robust against variations in chemical constitution as well as structural imperfection of the layers separating the Fe-As layers from each other and confirms that the Fe-As layers primarily determine the physics in this class of material.

Abstract:We report the discovery of a new noncentrosymmetric superconductor CaPtAs. It crystallizes in a tetragonal structure (space group I41md, No. 109), featuring three dimensional honeycomb networks of Pt-As and a much elongated c-axis (a = b = 4.18 Å, and c = 43.70 Å). The superconductivity of CaPtAs with Tc = 1.47 K was characterized by means of electrical resistivity, specific heat, and ac magnetic susceptibility. The electronic specific heat Ce(T)/T shows evidence for a deviation from the behavior of a conventional BCS superconductor, and can be reasonably fitted by a p-wave model. The upper critical field μ0Hc2 of CaPtAs exhibits a moderate anisotropy, with an in-plane value of around 204 mT and an out-of-plane value of 148 mT. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the Pt-5d and As-4p orbitals mainly contribute to the density of states near the Fermi level, showing that the Pt-As honeycomb networks may significantly influence the superconducting properties.

Abstract:Using self-flux method, we have successfully grown the parent phase of the single crystals of CaFeAsF1−x . The X-ray diffraction indicates good crystallinity. In-plane resistivity shows a bad metallic behavior with a sharp drop of resistivity at about T SDW =119 K. This anomaly is associated with the possible spin density wave (SDW) order. Interestingly near T SDW, the resistivity exhibits a cusp-like feature, which may be understood as the strong coupling effect between the electrons and the antiferromagnetic (AF) spin fluctuations. A reduction of fluorine or application of a high pressure will suppress the SDW feature and induce superconductivity. Hall effect measurements reveal a positive Hall coefficient below T SDW indicating a dominant role of the hole-like charge carriers in the parent phase. Strong magnetoresistance has been observed below T SDW suggesting multiple conduction channels of the charge carriers.

Abstract:High-transition temperature superconducting whiskers of Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+{\delta}}$ were successfully grown from pulverized amorphous precursors. The obtained whiskers revealed a typical composition and diffraction patterns of a superconducting Bi-2212 phase. The whiskers from tiny precursors exhibit a spiral feature, suggesting a contribution from the growth mechanism of both vapor-liquid-solid and compressive stress models. The proposed method provides longer whiskers against the growth period, compared with that from conventional root-growth method.

Abstract:Single crystals of A(1-x)K(x)Fe(2)As(2) (A = Ba, Sr) with high quality have been grown successfully by an FeAs self-flux method. The samples have sizes up to 4 mm with flat and shiny surfaces. The x-ray diffraction patterns suggest that they have high crystalline quality and c-axis orientation. The non-superconducting crystals show a spin-density-wave (SDW) instability at about 173 and 135 K for the Sr-based and Ba-based compound, respectively. After doping K as the hole dopant into the BaFe2As2 system, the SDW transition is smeared, and superconducting samples of the compound Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (0 < x <= 0.4) are obtained. The superconductors, characterized by AC susceptibility and resistivity measurements, exhibit very sharp superconducting transitions at about 36, 32, 27 and 23 K for x = 0.40, 0.28, 0.25 and 0.23, respectively.

Abstract:An overview of the crystal structures and physical properties of the recently discovered iron-platinum-arsenide superconductors, Ca10(PtnAs8)(Fe2-xPtxAs2)5 (n = 3 and 4), which have a superconducting transition temperature up to 38 K, is provided. The crystal structure consists of superconducting Fe2As2 layers alternating with platinum-arsenic layers, PtnAs8. The upper critical field Hc2, hydrostatic pressure dependence of superconducting transition temperature Tc, and normal-state magnetic susceptibility are reported.

Abstract:We have synthesized single crystals of iron-based superconducting Ca10(Pt₄As₈)((Fe0.86Pt0.14)₂As₂)₅ and performed extensive measurements on their transport properties. A remarkable difference in the behavior and a large anisotropy between in-plane and out-of-plane resistivity was observed. Disorder could explain the in-plane square-root temperature dependence resistivity, and interlayer incoherent scattering may contribute to the out-of-plane transport property. Along the ab plane, the estimated value of the coherence length is 15.5 Å. From measurements of the upper critical magnetic field Hc2 (T ≥ 20 K), we estimate Hc2(0) = 313 T. Thermal conductivity for Ca10(Pt₄As₈)((Fe0.86Pt0.14)₂As₂)₅ is relatively small, which can be accounted for by the disorder in the crystal and the low-charge carrier density as verified by the Hall effect.

Abstract:We report a study on the anisotropy of superconducting properties in single crystalline Ca10(Pt4-{\delta}As8)(Fe1.79Pt0.21As2)5 with Tc ~13.6 K. Under a field of 5 Oe, the sample reaches fully-diamagnetic state at ~10 K for H//c, and ~8 K for H//ab, indicating the presence of slight inhomogeneities. The magnetization measurements reveal fish-tail effect in the hysteresis loop for both H//c and H//ab. Averaged critical current densities at low magnetic fields along the c-axis and ab-plane Jc(H//c) and Jc(H//ab) at 5 K are estimated to be 0.9*10^5 and 0.7*10^5 A/cm2, respectively. Resistive transitions under magnetic field show broadening, which is consistent with a relatively large anisotropy of upper critical field. Magneto-optical images reveal homogenous current flow within the ab-plane.

Abstract:The 12442-type Fe-based superconductor is the only system that possesses two FeAs layers between neighboring insulating layers, which is worth the in-depth investigations. In this work, millimeter-sized single crystals of KCa2Fe4As4F2 were grown using a self-flux method. The chemical compositions and crystal structure were characterized carefully. Superconductivity with the critical transition Tc = 33.5 K was confirmed by both the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Moreover, the upper critical field Hc2 was studied by the resistivity measurements under different magnetic fields, where an anisotropy of 8 was revealed near the superconducting transition. Importantly, a rather steep increase for the in-plane Hc2ab with cooling, dμ0Hc2ab/dT|Tc = −50.9 T/K, was observed. This value is several times higher than that of other systems of Fe-based superconductor and indicates an extremely high upper critical field. Possible origins for this behavior were discussed. Abstract:SrPt2As2 single crystals with CaBe2Ge2-type structure were synthesized by self-melting technique. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and optical spectroscopy measurements were conducted to elucidate the properties of SrPt2As2. SrPt2As2 single crystals undergo a structural phase transition well above room temperature (about 450 K) and become superconducting at 5.18 K. The superconducting and structural phase transition temperatures are reduced by 6% iridium doping. Both the pure SrPt2As2 and the Ir-doped single crystals are demonstrated to be highly metallic with rather high plasma frequencies. In particular, the optical spectroscopy measurement revealed two gaplike suppression structures: a stronger one at high energy near 12 000 cm(-1) (similar to 1.5 eV), and a less prominent one at lower energy near 3200 cm(-1) (similar to 0.4 eV) for the pure compound. We elaborate that the former is related to the correlation effect, while the latter could be attributed to the partial energy gap formation associated with structural phase transition.

Abstract:We report superconducting properties of single crystalline Ca10(Pt4-{\delta}As8)(Fe2-xPtxAs2)5 by X-ray diffraction, magnetization, resistivity, and magneto-optical imaging measurements. The magnetization measurements reveal fish-tail hysteresis loop and relatively high critical current density Jc ~ 0.8\times105 A/cm2 at low temperatures. The exponential temperature dependence of Jc, which arises from nonlinear effective flux-creep activation energy, has been observed. Upper critical field determined by resistive transition shows a relatively large anisotropy. The magneto-optical images reveal homogenous current flow within the crystal.

High pressure growth and electron transport properties of superconducting SmFeAsO1-xHx single crystals

Abstract:We report the single crystal growth and characterization of the highest Tc iron-based superconductor SmFeAsO1-xHx. Some sub-millimeter-sized crystals were grown using the mixture flux of Na3As + 3NaH + As at 3.0 GPa and 1473 K. The chemical composition analyses confirmed 10% substitution of hydrogen for the oxygen site (x = 0.10), however, the structural analyses suggested that the obtained crystal forms a multi-domain structure. By using the FIB technique we fabricated the single domain SmFeAsO0.9H0.10 crystal with the Tc of 42 K, and revealed the metallic conduction in in-plane (rhoab), while semiconducting in the out-of-plane (rhoc). From the in-plane Hall coefficient measurements, we confirmed that the dominant carrier of SmFeAsO0.9H0.10 crystal is an electron, and the hydride ion occupied at the site of the oxygen ion effectively supplies a carrier electron per iron following the equation: O2- = H- + e-.

Abstract:We studied the low-lying electronic structure of the newly discovered iron-platinum-arsenide superconductor, Ca${}_{10}$(Pt${}_{4}$As${}_{8}$)(Fe${}_{2\ensuremath{-}x}$Pt${}_{x}$As${}_{2}$)${}_{5}$ (${T}_{c}=22$ K) with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We found that the Pt${}_{4}$As${}_{8}$ layer contributes to a small electronlike Fermi surface, indicative of metallic charge reservoir layers that are rare for iron based superconductors. Moreover, the electronic structure of the FeAs layers resembles those of other prototype iron pnictides to a large extent. However, there is only ${d}_{xy}$-orbital originated holelike Fermi surface near the zone center, which is rather strange for an iron pnictide superconductor with relatively high superconducting transition temperature; and the ${d}_{xz}$ and ${d}_{yz}$ originated bands are not degenerate at the zone center. Furthermore, all bands near the Fermi energy show negligible ${k}_{z}$ dependence, indicating the strong two-dimensional nature of this material. Our results indicate this material possesses a rather interesting electronic structure, which enriches our current knowledge of iron based superconductors.

Despite its triclinic crystal structure, ARPES results reveal a fourfold symmetric band structure with the absence of Dirac-cone-like Fermi dots (related to magnetism) found around the Brillouin zone corners in other iron-based superconductors. Considering that the triclinic lattice and structural supercell arise from the Pt${}_{3}$As${}_{8}$ intermediary layers, these results indicate that those layers couple only weakly to the FeAs layers in this new superconductor at least near the surface, which has implications for the determination of its pairing mechanism.
