Abstract:Supercapacitors have attracted much attention due to their high-power density and long cycle life, making them a potential substitute for traditional batteries. The research on hydroxide fluorides as electrode materials for supercapacitors has been increasing. Hydroxide fluorides exhibit higher specific capacitance due to the redox reactions between transition metal elements in different oxidation states. However, their high resistance limits their rate performance and cycling stability, which hinders their large-scale application. This article summarizes the main synthesis methods of hydroxide fluorides, and by controlling the reaction conditions, hydroxide fluorides with different morphologies and structures can be obtained to meet various application requirements. In addition, considering the limitations of hydroxide fluorides, this article systematically introduces the main approaches to improving their electrode performance and summarizes the electrochemical characteristics and latest research progress of hydroxide fluorides.

Abstract:Supercapacitors are important energy storage devices due to its fast charging/discharging features and long cycle life. Design and fabrication of superior supercapacitor electrodes is of significance to the improvement of the overall performances of a device. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely reported for supercapacitor applications due to their high-tunability, including favorable porous properties, tunable chemical compositions, controllable crystal structures, and adjustable geometry morphologies. In this review, the recent reports focusing on MOF-based supercapacitor applications are elaborated. Particularly, the recyclable MOF-hydrolyzing strategy is introduced, during which the organic ligands can be recollected to drastically reduce the costs. Furthermore, challenges and perspectives of MOFs for supercapacitor electrode applications are also summarized.

Abstract:Metal ion based hybrid capacitors (HCs) with a series of superiorities, such as exceptional electrochemical properties, cost-effective, safety and environmental benignity have come to the foreground in recent years. It is one of the indispensable energy storage systems that can not only hold high energy density and high power density simultaneously but also connect batteries and supercapacitors, thereby satisfying the energy storage needs of future multifunctional electronic devices. In this review, after a detailed introduction of the advanced electrode materials classified into battery-type and capacitive-type materials, the application of aqueous and non-aqueous electrolytes (organic electrolytes and ionic liquid electrolytes) were described sequentially as well. Furthermore, we addressed the recent advances on metal ion (Li, Na, K, Zn and Mg)-based HCs from the aspects of components, energy storage and conversion mechanism, selection and optimization of electrode materials and electrolytes as well as electrochemical performance evaluation and potential application. It can further comprehend the impact of key materials of metal ion based HCs on electrochemical performance, thus securing major advances in energy storage. Eventually, the principal challenges and future research prospects toward the metal ion based HCs were illustrated.

Abstract:This review provides an overview of recent advances in employing transition metal compounds (including oxides, chalcogenide, carbides, and nitrides) as electrode materials for potassium‐ion hybrid capacitors. The challenges of different transition metal compounds as well as the corresponding improvement strategies are highlighted, and the future prospects in this field are presented. Potassium‐ion hybrid capacitors (PIHCs) have attracted considerable attention as emerging electrochemical energy storage devices for simultaneously achieving high energy and power density, which the key to success is the development of compatible electrode materials for both battery‐type anode and capacitive cathode. Among numerous electrode materials, transition metal compounds (including oxides, chalcogenide, carbides, and nitrides) show great potential owing to their high theoretical capacity to achieve high energy density, but their sluggish reaction kinetics restrict the attainable power density. Hence, in the last few years, different strategies are proposed to improve the performance of transition metal compounds as electrode materials for PIHCs, and significant progress is achieved. Herein, this review outlines recent advances of employing transition metal compounds as electrode materials for PIHCs. The performance and challenges of different transition metal compounds are discussed in detail. Finally, the future prospects of practical applications of transition metal compounds in PIHCs are briefly discussed.

Abstract:The advent of novel organic and inorganic nanomaterials in recent years, particularly nanostructured carbons, conducting polymers, and metal oxides, has enabled the fabrication of various energy devices with enhanced performance. In this paper, we review in detail different nanomaterials used in the fabrication of electrochemical capacitor electrodes and also give a brief overview of electric double-layer capacitors, pseudocapacitors, and hybrid capacitors. From a materials point of view, the latest trends in electrochemical capacitor research are also discussed through extensive analysis of the literature and by highlighting notable research examples (published mostly since 2013). Finally, a perspective on next-generation capacitor technology is also given, including the challenges that lie ahead.

This review discusses the advantages and disadvantages of different metal oxides/hydroxides, in order to synthesize high-performance electrode materials. Two main strategies to enhance the supercapacitive performance are proposed: developing composites and nanostructured materials.

Abstract:Supercapacitors play an important role in power systems since they are a key part of electrochemical energy storage devices. To assemble high-performance supercapacitors, it is crucial to discover and innovate high-capacitive electrode materials. Recently, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives have received wide concerns as electrode materials for supercapacitors, not only because of their high pore volume and large surface area for ions and electrons insertion and transportation, but also due to the intrinsic metal active sites that possibly offer extra faradaic pseudocapacitance. Additionally, the abundant species of MOFs with various morphologies also feature advantages in enriching the structural diversity of electrodes. In this paper, we first report the latest research progress and demonstrate the feasibility of pure MOFs for directly constructing supercapacitor electrodes. Furthermore, different MOF derivatives, including porous carbons, transition metal oxides, metal hydroxides and MOF composites for supercapacitors, are summarized, and their electrochemical performances with corresponding energy storage mechanisms are presented in detail. Finally, the perspectives for MOF-based materials applied in supercapacitors are discussed, aiming to provide a guideline for further research based on these promising materials.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising electrode materials for supercapacitors (SCs) due to their highly porous structures, tunable chemical compositions, and diverse morphologies. However, their applications are hindered by low conductivity and poor cycling performance. A novel approach for resolving this issue involves the growth of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) using MOFs as efficient templates or precursors for electrode material preparation. This method effectively enhances the stability, electrical conductivity, and mass transport ability of MOFs. The MOF-derived LDH exhibits a well-defined porous micro-/nano-structure, facilitating the dispersion of active sites and preventing the aggregation of LDHs. Firstly, this paper introduces synthesis strategies for converting MOFs into LDHs. Subsequently, recent research progress in MOF-derived LDHs encompassing pristine LDH powders, LDH composites, and LDH-based arrays, along with their applications in SCs, is overviewed. Finally, the challenges associated with MOF-derived LDH electrode materials and potential solutions are discussed.

Abstract:The energy storage field has witnessed a dramatic expansion in terms of short charging time of supercapacitors, especially in the highly active electrode materials. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials have been extensively applied as precursors or templates for the synthesis of carbon, metal oxides/sulfides-based compounds as high-performance electrodes in supercapacitors. The MOFs-derived materials can be broadly divided into two groups: MOFs-derived porous carbon and MOFs-derived metal oxide/sulfide compounds. These MOFs-derived materials are characterized by unique porous structures, controllable structures, high surface area, good conductivity (MOFs-derived carbon) and outstanding electrochemical stability, meeting the requirements of the desirable specific capacitance and long-term cyclic performance of both electrochemical double layer capacitors and pseudocapacitors. However, MOFs-derived materials still suffer from the complex synthesis process and high production cost of MOFs precursors, difficulties in mass production, and unstable structure in highly corrosive electrolyte. In addition, the electrical conductivity of MOFs-derived metal oxides/sulfides needs to be further improved. In this review, we summarize the recent progresses in the development of MOFs-derived porous carbons and metal oxide/sulfide compounds and their applications in supercapacitors. The prospects and challenges of MOFs-derived carbon and metal oxide/sulfide compounds as highly effective and durable electrodes in supercapacitors are discussed.

Abstract:Metal-ion hybrid capacitors (MIHCs) hold particular promise for next-generation energy storage technologies, which bridge the gap between high energy density of conventional batteries and high power density and long lifespan of supercapacitors (SCs). However, the achieved electrochemical performance of the available MIHCs is still far from the practical requirements. This is primarily attributed to the mismatch in capacity and reaction kinetics between cathode and anode. In this regard, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives offer great opportunities for high-performance MIHCs due to their high specific surface area, high porosity, topological diversity, and designable functional sites. In this review, instead of simply enumerating, we critically summarize the recent progress of MOFs and their derivatives in MIHCs (Li, Na, K, and Zn), while emphasizing the relationship between structure/composition and electrochemical performance. In addition, existing issues and some representative design strategies are highlighted to inspire breaking through existing limitations. Finally, a brief conclusion and outlook are presented, along with current challenges and future opportunities for MOFs and their derivatives in MIHCs.

A novel edge-rich structure of CuO/Co3O4 derived from Prussian blue analogue as a high-rate and ultra-stable electrode for efficient capacitive storage

Abstract:Metal oxides derived from Prussian blue (PB) and Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) are usually used as electrode materials of supercapacitors (SCs). However, the disadvantage is few external active sites. We have successfully developed a novel yet facile strategy to prepare a novel Cu-Co mixed metal oxide (CuO/Co3O4) derived from Cu-based PBA (Cu3[Co(CN)6]2•9H2O), which can form the edge-rich structure to expose more active sites. The edge-rich structure greatly improves charge storage kinetics of electrode material, and the capacitive contribution can even reach 99% at a scan rate of 10 mV s−1. Even at a low specific surface area, this novel electrode material possesses excellently ultra-stable and high-rate performance in 2 M KOH aqueous electrolyte (76.7% capacity retention when the current density increases from 1 to 10 A g−1). Moreover, the hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) fabricated with the positive electrode edge-rich CuO/Co3O4 and the negative electrode nitrogen-doped graphene hydrogel (NDGH) delivers remarkable cycling stability (After 7000 cycles, 98.9% capacity is maintained). These excellent electrochemical performances can be attributed to a novel edge-rich structure, which is beneficial for exposing active sites in the external surface and thus promotes the capacitive contribution for fast redox reaction. This strategy opens up a new avenue for promoting electrochemical performance by mediating interfaces and can be extended to the fields of battery and electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Supercapacitors are the cutting-edge, high performing, and emerging energy storage devices in the future of energy storage technology. It delivers high energy and produces higher specific capacitances. This research study provides insights into supercapacitor materials and their potential applications by examining different battery technologies compared with supercapacitors' advantages and disadvantages. Transition metal hydroxides (cobalt hydroxides) have been studied to develop electrodes for supercapacitors and their use in various fields of energy and conversion devices. Cobalt-based metal oxides and hydroxides provide high-capacitance electrodes for supercapacitors. Metal hydroxides combine high electrical conductivity and excellent stability over time. The metal oxides used to prepare the electrodes for supercapacitors are cobalt-based metal oxides and hydroxides. It is stronger than most of the other oxides and has tremendous electrical conductivity. Cobalt hydroxides are also used in supercapacitors instead of other metal hydroxides, such as aluminum hydroxide, copper hydroxide, and nickel hydroxide. This study gives a complete overview of the preparation, synthesis, analysis, and characterization of cobalt hydroxide thin film electrodes by using the electrochemical deposition technique, parameters measurements, important characteristics, material properties, various applications, and future enhancement in supercapacitors.

Abstract:Electrochemical intercalation/conversion/alloying reactions, as one of the most important solid-state redox reactions, play essential roles in electrochemical energy storage systems. First-principles calculations hold great potential to fundamental understandings of reversible intercalation/conversion/alloying reactions, which may provide insights into designing high-performance electrode materials. Recently, electrode materials with both battery-type and capacitive charge storage are significantly promising in achieving high energy and high power densities, perfectly fulfilling the rigorous requirements of metal-ion batteries and electrochemical capacitors as the next generation of energy storage devices. Different from traditional electrode materials, the electrode materials with both battery-type and capacitive charge storage enable the charging and discharging processes within the order of minutes or even seconds because of the enhanced surface-controlled charge storage. By combining experimental characterizations and computational simulations, this review summaries the state-of-the-art of design strategies for electrode materials with both battery-type and capacitive charge storage. Moreover, the research opportunities and key technical challenges are suggested regarding further research in this thriving field.
Synthesis Of Cu-Doped Vanadium Oxide/Graphene Hybrid Material For High Performance Electrochemical Capacitor

Abstract:Vanadium oxides have attracted great concern in the research of electrode materials for electrochemical capacitors because of their high theoretical specific capacitance, wide range of sources and low prices. On the other hand, as one of the most promising 2D materials, graphene also gathers much attention during the last decade. In the present work, the vanadium oxide/graphene electrode material for electrochemical capacitors has been successfully synthesized by one-step simultaneous hydrothermal reduction technology, and the Cu-doped modified electrode material has also been prepared by adding cupric nitrate with the same progress. With the investigation of X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electrochemical measurements, the vanadium oxide/graphene and Cu-doped modified electrode materials both exhibit remarkable electrochemical performance with the starfruit-like structure of vanadium oxide particles in the electrochemical capacitors. High specific capacitances of 193.23F.g(-1) and 221.90F.g(-1) have been achieved for vanadium oxide/graphene hybrid material and Cu-doped electrode material respectively in 0.5mol.L-1 K2SO4 electrolyte at a current density of 0.25A.g(-1). Moreover, with the modification of the electrode material, the capacitance retention of the hybrid electrode material has increased from 56.27% to 71.79% after a cycling stability test at a current density of 1.0A.g(-1), showing a good application prospect.
