Abstract:Hierarchical LiFePO4 crystals self-assembled with subunits were successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) curve indicates the highly crystalline nature of the prepared samples. The field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images reveal that with increased KOH concentrations, the LiFePO4 products evoluted from microspheres self-assembled with microwires to spindle-like structures self-assembled with micro-needles and eventually to flower-like hierarchical nanostructures self-assembled with nanorods. The crystal growth mechanism could be explained by the synergetic effect of pH value and the surface-adsorbed K+ ions. The OH– anions represent pH value dominate the hierarchical morphology under both low and high KOH concentration, while K+ ions play the major role in synthesizing monodispersed LiFePO4 nanorods under medium KOH concentration. Moreover, charge–discharge curves and CV measurements demonstrated good reversible capacities and stable cycle performances of the LFP/C samples.

Abstract:Hierarchical hollow Fe3O4 (H-Fe3O4) microspheres are 'prepared by the controlled thermal decomposition of an iron alkoxide precursor, which is obtained via an ethylene glycol (EG) mediated solvothermal reaction of ferric chloride hexahydrate (FeCl3 center dot 6H(2)O), sodium acetate (NaAc), and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The microspheres are characterized by the assembly of highly oriented primary nanoparticles and have a single-crystal feature. As the anode materials for the lithium-ion batteries, the resultant H-Fe3O4 microspheres show high specific capacity and good cycle stability (851.9 mAh g(-1) at 1 C and 750.1 mAh g(-1) at 3 C up to 50 cycles), as well as enhanced rate capability. The excellent electrochemical performance can be attributed to the high interfacial contact area between the microspheres and electrolyte, and good accommodation of volume change arising from the synergetic effect of the hierarchical hollow structure. It is suggested that the H-Fe3O4 microsphere synthesized by this method is a promising anode material for high energy-density lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Hierarchical V2O5 microspheres composed of stacked platelets are fabricated through a facile, low-cost, and energy-saving approach. The preparation procedure involves a room-temperature precipitation of precursor microspheres in aqueous solution and subsequent calcination. Because of this unique structure, V2O5 microspheres manifest a high capacity (266 mA h g(-1)), excellent rate capability (223 mA h g(-1) at a current density 2400 mA g(-1)), and good cycling stability (200 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles) as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A novel approach has been developed to synthesize hierarchically porous Li4Ti5O12 microspheres assembled by well-crystalline nanoparticles. The fabrication process is very simple, involving only hydrothermal treatment of commercial anatase TiO2 powder in LiOH solution and a following calcination procedure without employing any surfactants or templates. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption analysis were used to characterize their morphologies and structures. Such Li4Ti5O12 nano/microspherical superstructures, with sizes of ca. 4 mu m in diameter, exhibits rich hierarchical pores and a specific surface area of 57.5 m(2) g(-1). A possible growth mechanism of the nano/microspherical superstructure is further discussed. The calcination temperature has a great effect on the crystal structure and electrochemical properties of the materials. The hierarchically porous Li4Ti5O12 microspheres annealed at 700 degrees C have the perfect crystallization and optimal particle size, which can deliver good coulombic efficiency, ultrahigh rate capability at high rates, and excellent capacity retention over 200 cycles.

Abstract:Developing advanced cathode materials to achieve the high-power applications is an important technology for the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. In this work, hierarchical LiMnPO4 microspheres are designed and fabricated using MnCO3 microspheres as the self-sacrificial template. The novel hierarchical structure with high tap density and more exposed active sites is favorable for the electrolyte penetration and also provides sufficient contact areas for fast Li-ion intercalation and deintercalation reaction. In addition, the uniform thin carbon layer extending from the interior to the outside of the LiMnPO4 microsphere, could further construct a conductive and robust carbon network, which will inevitably accelerate the transport of electrons and improve the discharge capacity. Specifically, a high reversibility capacity of 158.4 mAh g(-1) at 0.05 C and 104.3 mAh g(-1) at 5 C is achieved. Furthermore, the superior capacity retention with 98% after 200 cycles at 5 C is maintained, revealing an excellent cycle stability. This work may open up a promising strategy to prepare other advanced electrode materials. (C) 2019 The Electrochemical Society.

Abstract:Carbon coated micro/nanostructure FePO 4 composite materials were synthesized by hydrothermal methode, in which citric acid was used as both complexant and carbon resource. The dependence of synthesis process and complexant on the structure and morphology of composite materials were investigated by X ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM). The results showed that the sample consisted of dispersive microspheres with a quite uniform size distribution of 10μm through hydrothermal reaction at 130°C for 24h, when solution concetration was 0.03mol/L and pH value was nearly 2. After calcinated at 550°C for 3h, the microspheres were comprised of nanosticks, and their specific surface area can reach nearly 14 m 2 /g. Due to their micro/nanomicrosphere structure, the composite materials will benefit to the increase of lithium diffusion rate meanwhile preserve high tap density.

Abstract:A novel lysine-assisted hydrothermal process is first developed to produce hierarchically porous Fe2O3 microspheres assembled by well-crystalline nanoparticles. The fabrication process is very simple, without employing any surfactants or templates. A possible growth mechanism of the nano/microspherical superstructure is further discussed. The contribution of lysine to the formation of the unique microspheres is also tentatively proposed. Furthermore, as an anode electrode material for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, the Fe2O3 microsphere displays excellent electrochemical performance. It also exhibits the feature of capacity increase upon cycling and shows a stable and reversible capacity of 705 mA h g−1 after 430 cycles. The outstanding electrochemical performance of the Fe2O3 microsphere can be attributed to the hierarchical porosity, ordered microstructure, good electron pathways and easy penetration of the electrolyte.

Abstract:Hierarchical structured carbon@MoS2 (C@MoS2) microspheres and nanospheres composed of carbon-sandwiched monolayered MoS2 building blocks are synthesized through a facile one-pot polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) micelle-assisted hydrothermal route. The dimension and carbon content of C@MoS2 spheres are effectively controlled by singly adjusting the concentration of PVP, which plays the dual functions of soft-template and carbon source. As the anode materials of Li-ion batteries, C@MoS2 nanospheres present considerably higher capacity, better rate behavior and cycling stability than C@MoS2 microspheres. The reasons are attributed to the unique interconnected nanospherical morphology and the internal hierarchical construction of C@MoS2 nanospheres with expanded MoS2/carbon interlayer spacing.

Abstract:A microwave-assisted hydrothermal approach combined with carbothermal reduction has been developed to synthesize monodisperse porous LiFePO4/C microspheres, which possess the diameter range of 1.0-1.5 mu m, high tap density of similar to 1.3 g cm(-3), and mesoporous characteristic with Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 30.6 m(2) g(-1). The obtained microspheres show meatball-like morphology aggregated by the carbon-coated LiFePO4 nanoparticles. The electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) results indicate that carbon coating can effectively enhance both of the electronic and ionic conductivities for LiFePO4/C microspheres. The Li-ion diffusion coefficient of the LiFePO4/C microspheres calculated from the cyclic voltammetry (CV) curves is similar to 6.25 x 10(-9) cm(2) s(-1). The electrochemical performance can achieve about 100 and 90 mAh g(-1) at 5C and 10C charge/discharge rates, respectively. As cathode material, the as-prepared LiFePO4/C microspheres show excellent rate capability and cycle stability, promising for high power lithium-ion batteries. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:LiFePO4 and LiFePO4/C microspheres are successfully synthesized via facile co-precipitation in an elevated temperature oil bath. Their morphologies and structures are investigated by X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. LiFePO4/C microspheres are uniform between 2 and 4 mm in diameter and composed of nanoparticles from 30 to 80 nm in size. Nanoparticles are coated by a thin nano-carbon layer and imbedded into three-dimensional nano-carbon networks. LiFePO4/C microspheres exhibit a high tap density (1.82 g cm(-3)), deliver large reversible discharge capacity of 165 mA h g(-1) at 0.1C rate, excellent rate capability of 106 mA h g(-1) at 50C rate, and capacity retention over 98% after 20 cycles even applied 50C rate. Abstract:CoFe2O4 flower-like microspheres are prepared via a surfactant- and template-free method, involving the controlled hytrothermal synthesis firstly and a subsequent thermal decomposition treatment. The microspheres with diameters of 3–4 μm are characterized by the assembly of numerous porous and inter-connected lamella structures. Lithium-ion batteries electrodes based on the as-prepared CoFe2O4 microspheres show a high specific capacity of 733.5 mAh g−1 after 50 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g−1 and a good cyclic stability, as well as excellent rate capability. The enhanced electrochemical performance can be attributed to the hierarchical microsphere structure with high sufficient interfacial contact area between the microspheres and electrolyte, the short diffusion distance of Li+, better accommodation of structural stress and volume change with the lithiation/delithiation process. It is suggested that the CoFe2O4 microsphere is one of the most promising candidates for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Hierarchical Li4Ti5O12-TiO2 microspheres are synthesized via an oil/water interface method with the assistance of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and following calcination. The as-prepared Li4Ti5O12-TiO2 microspheres are consisted of nanoflakes (ca. 15 nm in thickness); moreover, Li4Ti5O12 and anatase TiO2 in the nanoflake building blocks are bounded by (011) and (001) facets, respectively. More especially, it is found that CTAB plays a very important role in the phase and morphology of the Li4Ti5O12-TiO2 composite. When employed as the anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the Li4Ti5O12-TiO2 microspheres show initial discharge capacities of 234, 170, 151 and 140 mAh g(-1) at charge/discharge rate of 1, 5, 10, and 20C, respectively; furthermore, after 100 cycles at 5C, the discharge capacity remains at 158 mAh g(-1) with a capacity retention of 92.9%. The excellent electrochemical properties of the product can be ascribed to the synergistic effect of the exposed Li4Ti5O12 (011) and anatase TiO2 (001) facets, abundant phase interfaces, hierarchical structures, and thin flake-like building blocks. Abstract:In this work, hierarchical flower-like ZnO nanospheres self-assembled by nanosheets with a thickness of similar to 10 nm have been synthesized via a simple hydrothermal route together with tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) and sodium citrate. As TMAH is only used without any sodium citrate, the obtained products are ZnO nanoplates with a thickness of similar to 50 nm and a lateral size of similar to 300 nm. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), and N-2-physisorption technique were employed to characterize the phase composition and microstructure of the synthesized samples. On the basis of the experimental results, a possible formation mechanism of the ZnO nanoplates and the hierarchical flower-like ZnO nanospheres has been proposed. Due to the ultrathin nanosheet and mesostructure feature, the hierarchical flower-like ZnO nanospheres as anode exhibit significant improvements in reversible capacities and cycle performance over the ZnO nanoplates. Abstract:Hierarchical LFP/C (LiFePO4) nanoplate microspheres are prepared via a facile template-free route by self-assembling porous microspheres of the interconnected network nanoplate building blocks and are then further modified with carbon. The self-assembled hierarchical nanocomposites with open porous, flexible, and stable structures show improved rate capability and excellent cycle life and have potential application in advanced Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Cage-like LiFePO4 microspheres are synthesized by a solvothermal reaction-calcination process, using Fe(NO3)(3)center dot 9H(2)O as iron source and ethylene glycol/water as co-solvent medium. The microsphere is the assembly of LiFePO4 nanoparticles with an open porous structure, thus the carbon coating can be easily introduced on the surface of the nanoparticles by the chemical vapor deposition of C2H4 during calcination process. When used as the cathode materials for the lithium-ion batteries, the resultant cage-like LiFePO4/C microsphere shows high capacity and good cycle stability (160 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C over 300 cycles), as well as good rate capability (120 mAh g(-1) at 10 C). The desirable electrochemical performance can be attributed to high rate of ionic/electronic conduction and the high structural stability arising from the interconnected open pores, carbon-coated nanoparticles and microsized structure. Template-Free Hydrothermal Synthesis of Li2fesio4 Hollow Spheres As Cathode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Li2FeSiO4 hollow spheres were successfully synthesized for the first time via a template-free hydrothermal approach, with the hydrothermal process monitored in detail. It was found that the growth mechanism of the Li2FeSiO4 hollow sphere could be attributed to the Ostwald ripening theory. Structural characterizations by XRD, FTIR and TEM measurements revealed that the Li2FeSiO4 hollow spheres had a hollow micro-/nanostructure, where micro-/nanosized void spaces provided more access of the electrolyte to the electrode surface, thereby facilitating charge transfer across the electrode/electrolyte interface. Moreover, the thin wall of the hollow spheres reduced the path lengths for lithium ion diffusion. To further improve the electronic conductivity, the Li2FeSiO4 hollow spheres were coated by a carbon layer, and the electrochemical performance of the Li2FeSiO4/C electrode materials obtained with different morphologies were investigated in detail. As a result, nanosized Li2FeSiO4 hollow spheres that were hydrothermally synthesized for three days showed the best performance, with a high specific capacity of 152 mA h g(-1) at 0.05 C in the voltage window of 1.5-4.8 V at room temperature.

Abstract:LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 microspheres have been successfully synthesized via a facile in situ route with MnO2 as the sacrificial template. The as-obtained sample shows a unique nano/micro-hierarchical structure. As a cathode material for lithium-ion battery, the sample exhibits excellent electrochemical performance with higher capacity, superior cycling stability and rate capability as compared with that prepared by conventional co-precipitate reaction method. The discharge specific capacities for the first cycle are 196, 187, 182 and 176 mA h g (1) at 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and 1 C, respectively. The superior performance can be ascribed to the unique microstructure with numerous nanosized primary particles that can provide rapid pathway for Li+ and e diffusion, and facilitate the penetration of the electrolyte. Abstract:Ultrathin Li4Ti5O12 nanosheet based hierarchical microspheres are synthesized through a three-step hydrothermal procedure. The average thickness of the Li4Ti5O12 sheets is only approximate to(6.6 +/- 0.25) nm and the specific surface area of the sample is 178 m(2) g(-1). When applied into lithium ion batteries as anode materials, the hierarchical Li4Ti5O12 microspheres exhibit high specific capacities at high rates (156 mA h g(-1) at 20 C, 150 mA h g(-1) at 50 C) and maintain a capacity of 126 mA h g(-1) after 3000 cycles at 20 C. The results clearly suggest that the utility of hierarchical structures based on ultrathin nanosheets can promote the lithium insertion/extraction reactions in Li4Ti5O12.
