Abstract:An electrochemical protocol for the selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides has been developed in which NaCl plays a dual role: (1) as an electrolyte for the electrochemical transformations and (2) as a redox mediator to avoid oxidation of sensitive functional groups.An electrochemical protocol for the selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides has been developed in which NaCl plays a dual role: (1) as an electrolyte for the electrochemical transformations and (2) as a redox mediator to avoid oxidation of sensitive functional groups. Instead of a traditional oxidant, this methodology utilised traceless electrons as an ideal oxidant using anodic oxidation to access sulfoxides in good to excellent yields at ambient temperature. This metal-free electrochemical protocol is simple, environmentally friendly, and compatible with various sensitive functional groups using mixed acetone/water as the green solvent. Moreover, the cost-effective graphite felt electrodes can be reused up to ten times without loss of electrochemical activity. The methodology could be easily conducted on a gram or even a decagram scale.

Abstract:<p>The recent development of selective oxidation of aromatic sulfides with molecular oxygen was highlighted. The sulfoxides and sulfones could be obtained by simply switching the reaction media, i.e., bis(2-butoxyethyl)ether (BBE) or poly(ethylene glycol)dimethyl ether (pegdme). The application of the high-boiling-point polyether as an initiator and green media can eliminate the need of large quantities of additives and volatile solvents. This strategy represents an economic and eco-friendly method that could find potential applications.</p>

Abstract:An efficient copper-catalyzed tandem oxidation/alpha-formylation reaction of 2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrroles in an oxygen atmosphere has been developed. The new reaction is conducted in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), which serves as both the carbonyl carbon source and solvent, in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid to directly generate structurally diverse alpha-formylpyrrole derivatives in one pot in moderate to good yields. Sensitive aldehyde groups remain intact in the presence of an oxidant, trifluoroacetic acid and a transition metal salt. A possible mechanism is presented.

Abstract:An efficient and selective method for oxidation of glycosyl sulfides to the corresponding glycosyl sulfoxides with metalloporphyrins as catalysts and sodium hypochlorite as oxidant was achieved under mild conditions. High chemoselectivity and diastereomeric excesses were obtained. Both acid-labile protected groups and carbon-carbon double bonds of allyl groups tolerated under these conditions.

Abstract:A dioxygen-triggered oxosulfonylation/sulfonylation of unactivated olefins to achieve β-keto sulfones/sulfones has been developed. Interestingly, pluralistic mechanisms were found when different types of compounds were applied as substrates, and different products were achieved. The reaction is carried out with a high atomic efficiency in the absence of a metal and a catalyst at room temperature under an air atmosphere. Abstract:Sulfoxides, as an essential pivot, are commonly found in pharmaceuticals and bulk chemicals. A practical synthetic protocol is depicted via application of readily obtainable Fe(NO3)3·9H2O as a catalyst and oxygen as a green oxidant for selective oxidation from thioethers to sulfoxides under ecofriendly and mild conditions. Various sulfoxides are all achieved in gram-scale with superior selectivity and efficiency. This protocol showcases broad-spectrum functional group compatibility, offering efficient access to sulfoxide construction for drug discovery and process optimization.

Abstract:The novel efficient procedure has been developed for the oxathioacetalization of carbonyl compounds and 2-mercaptoethanol using the novel carbon-based sulfonic acid as catalyst under solvent-free condition at room temperature. The results showed that the novel catalyst was very efficient for the reactions with good to excellent yields in short time. The novel catalyst owned many advantages such as operational simplicity, without need of any solvent, small amount of usage, low cost of the catalyst used, high yields, applicability to large-scale reactions, reusability and chemoselectivity over the traditional catalysts, which made the catalyst one of the best choices for the reactions.

Abstract:Simple and readily available ketones have been identified to promote the visible-light-promoted aerobic oxidation of sulfides and sulfoxides to sulfones. We report a simple and environmental-friendly oxidation protocol of sulfides to sulfones. Various sulfides were efficiently oxidized into sulfones with O-2 as sustainable terminate oxidant, readily available thioxanthone as the photocatalyst and 3-pentanone (DEK) as the solvent. The protocol tolerates diverse functional groups, including halogens, ketone, ester, cyano, heterocycle and even cyclopropyl groups. The detection of the aerobic oxidation reaction in DEK by GC and HRMS disclosed that the key active intermediates were generated. (c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The selective oxo-functionalization of hydrocarbons under mild conditions with molecular oxygen as the terminal oxidant continues to be a hot topic in organic synthesis and industrial chemistry. Though many oxidation protocols in combination with transition metal salts, enzymes, organometallic catalysts, or organocatalysts have been summarized recently, a review that focuses solely on the metal-free allylic/benzylic oxidation strategies with molecular oxygen is still unavailable. This critical review will summarize recent significant advances achieved in this important field under the scope of green chemistry, which covers the promising applications and brief mechanistic profiles involving three kinds of efficient catalysts, namely N-hydroxyimides, homogeneous/heterogeneous light-sensitive molecules, and heteroatom-doped carbon materials, and concerns the sustainability of these methods, as well as predicts the potential utilization of available but unreported analogous catalysts or catalytic systems in this field. Special emphasis will also be placed on the burgeoning metal-free strategies with visible light irradiation from the long-term greenness and sustainability of these oxidation processes due to their established appealing performances under ambient conditions.

Abstract:Systematic oxidations of sulfides with sodium chlorite have been investigated in aprotic solvents under mild and neutral conditions, Metal catalysis is essential for the efficient oxidation,and conversion of a wide variety of diaryl, alkyl aryl, dialkyl and cyclic sulfides into the corresponding sulfoxides can be favoured by the catalytic presence of manganese(III) acetylacetonate in acetone with the aid of moist alumina in general or dry alumina in particular cases in a rapid, high-yielding manner. This simple procedure has also been found to be an easy method for chemoselective transformation of functionalised sulfides without extensive undesirable side-reactions.

Abstract:A transition‐metal‐free protocol is proposed for the selective oxidation of flavones, providing various sulfoxide/sulfone‐flavonoids in excellent yields. This strategy features excellent selectivities, high yields and broad substrate scope. The combination of oxone (2KHSO5·KHSO4·K2SO4) as the sole oxidant and NaHCO3/Na2CO3 as the buffer play an important role in the process, in which the amounts of oxone and reaction temperatures are the key to the outstanding selectivities and high efficiency of the reaction. It should be noteworthy that a class of novel sulfone‐flavonols is also synthesized through triple oxidation. Moreover, the glycosylation of sulfone‐flavonols has been realized.

Abstract:Sulfoxide is an important structural motif widely found in medicine, materials, chiral catalysis, and many other fields. The development of green and sustainable synthetic methods for their efficient preparation is of great significance. Herein, we have unraveled an electrochemical β-chlorosulfoxidation of alkenes, using the readily available thiols and hydrochloride as the limiting agents. This protocol features a simple operation, wide substrate scope, and good functionality compatibility. Notably, the thus obtained β-chlorosulfoxides have been shown to be versatile building blocks for the preparation of diverse functionalized β-sulfoxides.
