Abstract:An unusual methylcyclopropanation from [2 + 1] cycloadditions of vinyl bromides to norbornenes catalyzed by Pd(OAc)2/PPh3 in the presence of CH3ONa and CH3OH has been established. A methylcyclopropane subunit was installed by a 3-fold domino procedure involving a key protonation course. Preliminary deuterium-labeling studies revealed that the proton came from methyl of CH3OH and also exposed an additional hydrogen/deuterium exchange process. These two proton-concerned reactions were fully chemoselective.

Abstract:A series of nickel and palladium complexes bearing (imino)pyridyl alcohol tridentate [N,N,O] ligands, 2-(ArNCMe)-6-{(HO)CR2}C5H3N (L1–L4), were synthesized and sufficiently characterized by elemental and spectroscopic analysis along with X-ray diffraction analysis. The X-ray diffraction demonstrated that five-coordinated nickel halide complexes (1a–4a and 1b) and six-coordinated nickel acetate complex (1c) were prepared, and cationic palladium complexes (1d and 2d) formed with the [PdCl4]2− counterion. All these complexes displayed high catalytic activities up to 1.883 × 107 g(PNB) mol−1(cat) h−1 (2d) for the vinyl polymerization of norbornene on treatment with excess methylaluminoxane (MAO), affording the vinyl-type PNBs with high molecular weights and relatively narrow molecular weight distributions. The parameters of reaction conditions, the type of metals and steric effects of coordinative ligands had influences on the catalytic properties.

Abstract:A series of mono- and di-nuclear nickel(II) complexes bearing 3-aryliminomethyl-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde ligands were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR and elemental analysis along with single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the dinuclear nickel complexes formed with two bridged ligands and one bromide around each nickel center and the mononuclear nickel complexes bearing two centrosymmetrical ligands exhibited a distorted square-planar geometry. Upon activation with methylaluminoxane (MAO), all these nickel complexes displayed high catalytic activities up to 9.88 × 107 g(PNB) mol−1(Ni) h−1 (6b) for the vinyl polymerization of norbornene, yielding the vinyl-type PNBs with high molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. The steric and electronic factors of ligands and reaction parameters had influences on the catalytic properties.

Abstract:DFT calculations were performed to elucidate mechanistic details of an unusual palladium-catalyzed methylcyclopropanation from [2 + 1] cycloadditions of (Z)-2-bromovinylbenzene and endo-N-(p-tolyl)-norbornenesuccinimide. The reaction proceeds via oxidative addition (OA), intermolecular alkene insertion, deprotonation/protonation, intramolecular alkene insertion, β-H elimination and reductive elimination (RE). Protonation is the rate-limiting step and requires an overall barrier of 28.5 kcal/mol. The sources of two protons for protonation and exchange have also been clarified and the calculations agree with experimental observations.

Abstract:An example of palladium/norbornene-catalyzed C-H/N-H cycloaddition of carbazoles with 2-bromobenzoic acids is presented, in which a collection of important carbazoles is expeditiously obtained. Derivatives including acyl halides, α-oxocarboxylic acids, anhydrides, and even amides are all allowable. Preliminary mechanistic studies reveal that a rare six-membered spiropalladacycle is involved.

Abstract:Polymerization of norbornene has been promoted by a catalyst system composed of [2-methyl-8-(diphenylphosphino)quinoline]nickel dichloride and MAO. The catalytic system showed high activity (activity < 1.70 x 10(8) g-PNB/mol-Ni h) for vinyl addition type polymerization. The resultant polynorbornenes possessed high molecular weight (M-w < 2.08 x 10(6) g/mol) with wide molecular weight distribution (M-w/M-n < 19.20), and were soluble, showing no crystallinity in the solid state. The catalytic activity, molecular weight as well as polydispersity of the resultant polymer can be controlled over a wide range by varying the reaction parameters. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Abstract The activated butadienylcyclopropane has been successfully developed as a new precursor of the Pd‐π‐allyl zwitterion for the Pd‐catalyzed intermolecular [3+2] cycloaddition, which proceeds preferentially over its intramolecular rearrangement into a vinyl cyclopentane. Multi‐substituted cyclopentanes bearing a butadienyl group are synthesized through the Pd‐catalyzed [3+2] cycloaddition reaction of activated butadienylcyclopropanes with methylenemalononitrile derivatives in high yield under mild conditions. The cycloaddition reaction could proceed well on a gram scale.

Abstract:Novel bridged dinuclear diimine nickel and palladium complexes catalyzed the vinyl addition polymerization of norbornene at a single active site with high activity. The latter exhibited higher activity than the former. Smaller substituents around the imido group in the ligand were more favorable for increasing the activity than bulkier ones. The polynorbornenes were all noncrystalline but had short‐range order and their glass transition temperature, Tg, ranged from 270 to 400 °C. Furthermore, the random copolymerization of norbornene and styrene was catalyzed by the bridged dinuclear diimine nickel complex with MAO (methylaluminoxane). Gel permeation chromatography (GPC), FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopies, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) indicated that the copolymers are “true” copolymers. The reactivity ratios were rstyrene = 0.281, rnorbornene = 18.7. The packing density, thermostability and the glass transition temperatures of copolymers are increased relative to polystyrene. The solubility and processability of the copolymers are improved relative to polynorbornene. The structures of bridged dinuclear diimine nickel and palladium complexes. Abstract:Vinyl-addition polymerization of norbornene was accomplished by two novel dinuclear diimine nickel dichloride complexes in combination with methylaluminoxane (MAO). The activities were moderate. The catalyst structure, Al/Ni molar ratio, solvents, and polymerization temperature all affected the catalytic activities. The obtained polynorbornenes were characterized by H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR, FTIR, DSC, WAXD, and intrinsic viscosity measurements. The vinyl-addition polymers were amorphous but with a short-range order and high packing density. The polynorbornenes showed glass transition temperatures (T-g) above 240degreesC and decomposed above 400degreesC. The catalyst structure and polymerization conditions have effects on the molecular weight and the microstructure of the polymers. The nickel complex with bulkier substituents in the ligand produced polynorbornene with a higher packing density and higher regularity and, therefore, with higher T-g. Abstract:The title complex bis{1-[[（3-methyl-pyridin-2-yl） amino] methyl-phenyl]-2-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-butylphenol} palladium(C42H56O2N4Pd) has been synthesized by the reaction of 1-[[（3-methyl-pyridin-2-yl）amino]methyl-phenyl]-2-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-butylphenol with Pd（OAc）2, and was characterized by IR and elemental analyses（C, H, N）. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the complex revealed an almost parallelogram geometry of the metal center, space group P1 with a = 12.3870（13）, b = 12.9673（12）, c = 14.3998（4） ?, α = 67.53（2）, β = 75.34（2）, γ = 86.89（3）°, V = 2065.5（3） ?3, Mr = 773.32, Z = 2, Dc = 1.243 g/cm3, μ = 0.489 mm-1, F（000） = 816, the final R = 0.0649 and wR = 0.1567. The compound was investigated for the catalytic behavior towards norbornene（NB） vinyl addition polymerization. And the complex exhibits high catalytic activities up to 1.668 × 107 g of PNB（mol of Pd）-1 h-1 with high monomer conversion using methylaluminoxane（MAO） as the cocatalyst.

Abstract:A cascade reaction enabling enantio- and diastereoselective construction of strained cyclopropanes is described. This asymmetric (2+1) annulation process uses vinyl methylene carbonate and 2-cyanoacrylate as reaction partners in the presence of Pd(PPh3)4 as a precatalyst and an enantioenriched phosphoramidite ligand featuring a morpholine functionality. Mechanistic investigations unveil that the PPh3 derived from the Pd(PPh3)4 and the morpholine-containing phosphoramidite work as cooperative phosphorus and Brønsted base catalysts to promote the reaction.

Abstract:A series of neutral salicylaldiminato Ni(II) complexes have been synthesized and characterized, and complexes a and e have been confirmed by X-ray single-crystal analyses. These compounds show highly catalytic activities for the vinyl polymerization of norbornene with MAO cocatalyst, which could be up to 2.86 x 10(8) g PNB/(mol Ni(.)h), and also lead to various activities, molecular weights, and distributions of polynorbornenes under different reaction conditions.

Abstract:Polyfunctional molecules, 1,5-enynes, have been achieved via a palladium(0)-catalyzed domino coupling reaction of (Z)--bromostyrenes with norbornenes in the presence of cesium carbonate and N,N-dimethylformamide. The process involves a double Heck-type procedure, two-fold C(sp(2))H activation and formation of two carbon-carbon bonds. There are possibilities of diversified transformation for the domino coupling of (Z)--bromostyrenes with norbornenes, the procedure is successfully driven to 1,5-enynes via accurate adjustment of the reaction conditions.

Abstract:Picolyl, pyridine, and methyl functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene iridium complexes [Cp*Ir(CN)Cl]Cl (4, CN = 3-Methyl-1-picolyimidazol-2-ylidene), [Cp*Ir(CN)Cl][Cp*IrCl3] (5), [Cp*Ir(C-N)Cl]Cl (6, C-N = 3-Methyl-1-pyridylimidazol-2-ylidene) and [Cp*Ir(L)Cl-2] (7, L = 1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene) have been synthesized by transmetallation from Ag(I) carbene species, and characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR spectra and elemental analyses. The molecular structures of 5-7 have been confirmed by X-ray single-crystal analyses. The iridium carbene complexes 4 and 6 show moderate catalytic activities (3.03 x 10(5) g PNB (mol Ir) (1)h (1) and 1.70 x 10(6) g PNB (mol Ir) (1) h (1)) for the addition polymerization of norbornene in the presence of methylaluminoxane (MAO) as co-catalyst. The produced polynorbornene have been characterized by IR, H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR spectra, showing it follows the vinyl-addition-type of polymerization.

Abstract:A series of tridentate monoanionic [C–,N,X] (X = S, P) nickel(II) complexes [(C6H4CH═NPh-2-XPh)NiBr] (X = S (1a), PPh (1b)) and palladium(II) complexes [(C6H4CH═NPh-2-XPh)PdCl] (X = S (2a), PPh (2b)) were synthesized from the reactions of La and Lb (La = BrC6H4CH═NPh-2-SPh, Lb = BrC6H4CH═NPh-2-PPh2) with (DME)NiBr2 and (COD)PdCl2, respectively, in good yields. All complexes were fully characterized by IR, NMR, and elemental analyses. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of complex 2a revealed an almost square-planar geometry of the metal center. After activation with methylaluminoxane (MAO), the title complexes 1a,b and 2a,b can be used as catalysts for norbornene polymerization to produce vinyl addition type polynorbornene (PNB) with good catalytic activities. The good catalytic activities of complexes 1b and 2b as procatalysts which contain a P atom as the third coordinated atom can be maintained even at high temperature, demonstrating their excellent thermal stability.
