Abstract:Rapid room-temperature synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is highly desired for industrial implementation and commercialization. Here we find that a (Zn,Cu) hydroxy double salt (HDS) intermediate formed in situ from ZnO particles or thin films enables rapid growth (<1 min) of HKUST-1 (Cu3(BTC)2) at room temperature. The space-time-yield reaches >3 × 10(4) kg·m(-3)·d(-1), at least 1 order of magnitude greater than any prior report. The high anion exchange rate of (Zn,Cu) hydroxy nitrate HDS drives the ultrafast MOF formation. Similarly, we obtained Cu-BDC, ZIF-8, and IRMOF-3 structures from HDSs, demonstrating synthetic generality. Using ZnO thin films deposited via atomic layer deposition, MOF patterns are obtained on pre-patterned surfaces, and dense HKUST-1 coatings are grown onto various form factors, including polymer spheres, silicon wafers, and fibers. Breakthrough tests show that the MOF-functionalized fibers have high adsorption capacity for toxic gases. This rapid synthesis route is also promising for new MOF-based composite materials and applications.

Abstract:A new three-dimensional porous metal-organic framework, {[NH2(CH3)(2)][Zn(atz)(ox)]center dot H2O}(n) (1) (Hatz = 5-amino-1H-tetrazole, H(2)ox = oxalic acid), has been solvothermally synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, TG, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Complex 1 exhibits an anionic framework that can be simplified as a rarely reported 4-connected lon network. Complex 1 could be utilized as a platform for emission tuning by doping different lanthanide ions. In addition, gas adsorption studies reveal that 1 has a high isosteric heat of CO2 and good adsorption selectivity for CO2 over CH4 and N-2.

Abstract:Fe(2)O(3) microboxes with hierarchically structured shells have been synthesized simply by annealing Prussian blue (PB) microcubes. By utilizing simultaneous oxidative decomposition of PB microcubes and crystal growth of iron oxide shells, we have demonstrated a scalable synthesis of anisotropic hollow structures with various shell architectures. When evaluated as an anode material for lithium ion batteries, the Fe(2)O(3) microboxes with a well-defined hollow structure and hierarchical shell manifested high specific capacity (~950 mA h g(-1) at 200 mA g(-1)) and excellent cycling performance.

Abstract:Unlike inorganic crystals, metal-organic frameworks do not have a well-developed nanostructure library, and establishing their appropriately diverse and complex architectures remains a major challenge. Here, we demonstrate a general route to control metal-organic framework structure by a solvent-assisted ligand exchange approach. Thirteen different types of metal-organic framework structures have been prepared successfully. To demonstrate a proof of concept application, we used the obtained metal-organic framework materials as precursors for synthesizing nanoporous carbons and investigated their electrochemical Na + storage properties. Due to the unique architecture, the one-dimensional nanoporous carbon derived from double-shelled ZnCo bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework nanotubes exhibits high specific capacity as well as superior rate capability and cycling stability. Our study offers an avenue for the controllable preparation of well-designed meta-organic framework structures and their derivatives, which would further broaden the application opportunities of metal-organic framework materials.

Abstract:Herein, two heterometallic metal organic frameworks were reported by two-step synthesis strategies. By employing the neutral {Fe2IIIZnO(O2CCCl3)6(CH3OH)3} (1) metalloligand precursor, two new heterometallic{Fe2II/III-Zn} cluster-based coordination polymers, namely, {[FeII/III2Zn(BDC)4]•NH2(Me)2}n (MOF2) and {[FeII/III2Zn(μ3-O) (BTC)2(CH3CH2CH2OH)]·NH2(Me)2}n (MOF3), were synthesized and structurally characterized. MOF2 exhibited 8-connected 3D bcg topological net based on FeII/III2Zn(OCO)6 heterometallic unit. MOF3 showed 3D framework based on FeII/III2Zn(μ3-O) (OCO)4 trinuclear unit with binodal (3,6)-connected scu/p topology, and possessed two kinds of 1D hydrophobic and hydrophilic open channel along the c axis. Interestingly, both FeII and FeIII ions with 1:1 ratio were observed in the trinuclear unit and confirmed by bond valence sum (BVS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Mössbauer spectroscopy studies. The transformation was accompanied by the dissolution, self-reduction of FeIII to FeII and the cleavage/regeneraion of coordination bonds. Meanwhile, the heterogeneous catalytic effects for one-pot synthesis of imine from amine and alcohols under solvent-free conditions were also studied.

Abstract:A new interpenetrating three dimensional open metal-organic framework [Zn-8(GeO4)(C8H4O4)(6)](n), constructed by Zn-8(GeO4) secondary building units is reported. It is a rare example of metal-organic frameworks based on the heterometallic cluster secondary building units. Thermogravimetric analysis shows that it is thermally stable up to 320degreesC.

Abstract:Reticular chemistry has been an important guiding principle for the design of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). This approach utilizes discrete building units (molecules and clusters) that are connected through strong bonds into extended networks assisted by topological considerations. Although the simple design principle of connecting points and lines has proved successful, new design strategies are still needed to further explore the structures and functions of MOFs. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of two mixed-ligand MOFs, [(CH3)(2)NH2](4)[Zn4O](4)[Zn-(TCPP)](5)[BTB](8/3) (PCN-137) and [Zr-6(mu(3)-O)(4)(mu(3)-OH)(4)][TCPP]-[TBTB](8/3) (PCN-138) (BTB = 1,3,5-benzene(tris)-benzoate, TBTB = 4,4',4 ''-(2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3,5-triyl)tribenzoate, and TCPP = tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin) by the stacking of face-sharing Archimedean solids. In these two MOFs, high-symmetrical metal clusters serve as vertices, and tritopic or tetratopic carboxylate ligands function as triangular and square faces, leading to the formation of two kinds of Archimedean solids (rhombicuboctahedron and cuboctahedron). Furthermore, the ordered accumulation of Archimedean solids successfully gives rise to 3D structures through face-sharing, highlighting the polyhedron-based approach for the design and preparation of MOFs. In addition, PCN-138 was utilized as a heterogeneous catalyst toward CO2 photoreduction under visible-light irradiation. This structure shows high photocatalytic activity, which can be attributed to the coexistence of photosensitizing porphyrin fragments and Zr-oxo centers within the PCN-138 scaffold.

Abstract:A new method to construct hierarchical architectures has been developed by programmed transformation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). A MOF precursor was fabricated by reaction of Cu(OAC)2 and 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (H4DOBDC), which could perform transformation in pure methanol solvent and the sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) solution of methanol, respectively. Interestingly, two kinds of immersion solutions could induce the transformation of the MOF precursor into MOF-74, which resulted in different morphologies: nanoneedles for the methanol and nanosheets for the SDBS. Herein, nanosheets-mesorods-microcuboid hierarchical quaternary architectures of MOF have been successfully achieved by sequential immersion of the precursor in two kinds of transformation solutions, which demonstrates well-defined hierarchy from the nanoscale to mesoscale to microscale. A unique hierarchical architecture could be recognized as quaternary structures, taking the MOF unit cell as the primary structure, the nanosheets as the secondary structure, the mesorods as the tertiary structure, and the microcuboid as the quaternary structure. Our study indicated the potential of programmed transformation between MOFs in the construction of hierarchical architectures, offering a new approach to sophisticated materials.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent an emerging class of crystalline materials with well-defined pore structures and hold great potentials in a wide range of important applications. The functionality of MOFs can be further extended by integration with other functional materials, e.g., encapsulating metal nanoparticles, to form hybrid materials with novel properties. In spite of various synthetic approaches that have been developed recently, a facile method to prepare hierarchical hollow MOF nanostructures still remains a challenge. Here we describe a facile emulsion-based interfacial reaction method for the large-scale synthesis of hollow zeolitic imidazolate framework 8 (ZIF-8) nanospheres with controllable shell thickness. We further demonstrate that functional metal nanoparticles such as Pd nanocubes can be encapsulated during the emulsification process and used for heterogeneous catalysis. The inherently porous structure of ZIF-8 shells enables encapsulated catalysts to show size-selective hydrogenation reactions.

Abstract:The hydrothermal reactions of Zn(ClO4)(2).6H(2)O/ Cu(NO3)(2).6H(2)O with 5-(4-pyridyl)tetrazole in an ethanol/ water or ethanol/water/pyridine medium yield one 2D and one 3D metal-organic coordination framework [Zn-2(OH)(4-Ptz)(3)] (1) and [Cu(4.ptz).0.5(py)] (3) [4-ptz = 5-(4-pyridyl)tetrazolate, py = pyridine], respectively. Complex 1 possesses two identical and independent rectangular grid sheets with twofold parallel interpenetration, in which the four-connected nodes of the net are provided by Zn-2(OH) units connected to one another through 4-ptz and (4-PtZ)(2) bridges. These composite sheets are stacked one on top of another by hydrogen-bonding interactions to afford a 3D structure. There are many structural similarities between complex 1 and the recently reported 2D layered network [Zn(OH)(4-ptz)(H2O)] (2), in particular the components of the network, the coordination mode of the 4-ptz ligand and the in situ formation of hydroxy groups. Complex 2 can be synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction of Zn(ClO4)(2).6H(2)O and 5-(4-pyridyl)tetrazole in an ethanol/water/pyridine medium. The structural characterization of complex 3 shows a porous structure that contains the guest pyridine molecules. Abstract:A unique metal-organic framework (MOF) with tetrazole-padded helical channels has been successfully synthesized in one pot from iron(II) trifluoromethanesulfonate, 4-formylimidazole, hydrazine, and sodium azide under solvothermal conditions and features a rare unh topology and porous structure for gas adsorption. Transformations of condensation, cycloaddition, and coordination occurred during the synthetic process, in which a 1,5-disubstituted tetrazole ligand was formed in situ.

Abstract:When the supramolecular building block packings (face-centered, body-centered, and primitive cubic) with different interactions (hydrogen and coordination bonding) were controlled, four new structures based on octahedral M-II (M = Zn, Ni, Mn) and imidazoledicarboxylate were constructed. The interaction modes between the supramolecular building blocks affect the water stability of the structures. Furthermore, with uncoordinated carboxylate O atoms in the structures, these compounds demonstrate a strong capability of capturing metal ions in the solution.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are potentially useful molecular materials that can exhibit structure flexibilities induced by some external stimuli. Such structure transformations can furnish MOFs with improved properties. The shape-controlled growth of MOFs combined with crystal-structure transformation is rarely achieved. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of hierarchical Zn/Ni-MOF-2 nanosheet-assembled hollow nanocubes (NAHNs) by a facile surfactant-free solvothermal approach. The unique nanostructures undergo crystal-structure transformation from Zn/Ni-MOF-5 nanocubes to Zn/Ni-MOF-2 nanosheets, which is analogous to the dissolution and recrystallization of inorganic nanocrystals. The present synthetic strategy to fabricate isostructural MOFs with hierarchical, hollow, and bimetallic nanostructures is expected to expand the diversity and range of potential applications of MOFs.

Abstract:Taking advantage of a basic ligand (BPCH=2,6-bis(4-pyridyl methylidene)cyclohexanone) and three acid ligands (H2TP=terephthalic acid, H2IP=isophthalic acid, H(3)TMA=1, 3, 5 - benzenetricarboxylic acid), seven metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) 1-7 have been achieved by using this acid-base mixed-ligand synthetic strategy. These complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectra, powder X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. Diverse 3D structural characters of MOFs 1-3 or 2D structural characters of MOFs 4-7 have been observed. The fluorescence properties of these complexes have been explored, indicating that they had selectivity towards Fe3+ ions. Several complexes had shown certain performance for adsorbing dye molecules.
