Abstract:It is shown here for the first time that diethyl azodicarboxylate promotes dehydrogenation of tertiaryamines to afford enamines, which subsequently take place in tandem reactions with sulfonyl azides to give the N-sulfonyl amidine derivatives. A number of different substituted tertiaryamines and sulfonyl azides can successfully be coupled, and several functionalized groups are tolerated in this system. The reaction described here is mild, general, and efficient, thus providing an extremely preferable method for synthesis of a variety of N-sulfonyl amidine derivatives.

Abstract:A palladium-catalyzed tandem dehydrogenative [4 + 2] annulation of terminal olefins with N-sulfonyl amides via C(sp(2))-H activation, allylic C(sp(3))-H activation, and homoallylic C(sp(3))-H elimination processes has been developed. Promoted by the DMSO ligand, various benzamides, heterocyclic arylamides, alkenyl carboxamides, and commercial olefins are found to be efficient substrates to construct important heterocyclic compounds bearing a vinyl substituent with high E stereoselectivity. Using air as the terminal oxidant also provides a great advantage regarding environmental friendliness.

Abstract:Asymmetric synthesis of 3-hydroxyl-2-alkanones is achieved via one-pot, tandem organocatalytic aminoxylation of aldehydes and chemoselective CH2N2-induced homologation. Abstract:A bimetallic relay catalysis protocol for tandem allylic C–H amination and asymmetric [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement has been developed with the use of an achiral Pd 0 catalyst and a chiral N , N ′-dioxide–Mg II complex in a one-pot operation. A series of anti-α-amino derivatives containing two stereogenic centers were prepared from readily available allylbenzenes and glycine pyrazolamide with good yields and high stereoselectivities. Moreover, the synthetic potential of this protocol was further demonstrated by the product transformations, and a catalytic cycle was proposed to illustrate the reaction process.

Abstract:Amide bond formation reactions are among the most important transformations in organic chemistry because of the widespread occurrence of amides in pharmaceuticals, natural products and biologically active compounds. The Beckmann rearrangement is a well-known method to generate secondary amides from ketoximes. However, under the acidic conditions commonly employed, aldoximes RHC=NOH rarely rearrange into the corresponding primary amides RC(=O)NH2. In recent years, it was demonstrated that this atom-economical transformation can be carried out efficiently and selectively with the help of metal catalysts. Several homogeneous and heterogenous systems have been described. In addition, protocols offering the option to generate the aldoximes in situ from the corresponding aldehydes and hydroxylamine, or even from alcohols, have also been developed, as well as a series of tandem processes allowing the access to N-substituted amide products. In this Feature article a comprehensive overview of the advances achieved in this particular research area is presented.

Abstract:Tandem aromatic rearrangements represent a potent strategy for modulating the regioselectivity of a rearrangement process. In this article, we disclose two novel tandem aromatic rearrangements triggered by sulfonium [5,5]-rearrangement recently developed in our laboratory. Specifically, the [5,5]-rearrangement of aryl sulfoxides with allyl nitriles, followed by [3,3]-Cope rearrangement, forges a seamless tandem [5,5]-/[3,3]-rearrangement cascade, affording ortho -functionalized aryl sulfides. The other tandem process involves [5,5]-rearrangement of aryl sulfoxides with allyl nitriles, followed by nucleophilic addition/DDQ-oxidation-induced [3,3]-Cope rearrangement, eventually yielding meta -functionalized aryl sulfides. Both consecutive rearrangements enrich the repertoire of tandem aromatic rearrangement methodologies. Abstract:2,5-Dihydroisoxazoles, 4-iodo-2,5-dihydroisoxazoles, and 4-bromo-2,5-dihydroisoxazoles were efficiently constructed from propargylic alcohols and N-tosyl hydroxylamine using ytterbium triflate, iodine and N-bromosuccinimide, respectively. N-sulfonylallenamide is postulated to be the key intermediate for these tandem transformations. Moreover, the resulting 4-iodo-2,5-dihydroisoxazoles could be elaborated by palladium-catalyzed carbonylation to generate 4-methoxycarbonyl-4,5-dihydroisoxazoles.

Abstract:A system consisting of catalytic amounts of [Rh(CH2 = CH2)Cl](2)/PPh2Cy, and PhCl as the solvent efficiently catalyzes selective rearrangement of aldoximes to furnish various primary amides in moderate to good yields. Replacing the [Rh(CH2 = CH2)Cl](2) with Rh(NBD)(2)OTf enables the superior transformation to afford the amides with up to 99% yields. Attractive synthetic features associated with this methodology include absence of co-catalysts, broad functional group tolerance, good to excellent yields, low metal loadings, and operational convenience.

Abstract:A new strategy for the synthesis of α-alkylated ketones via tandem acceptorless dehydrogenation/α-alkylation from secondary and primary alcohols was proposed and accomplished. In the presence of metal-ligand bifunctional iridium complex [Cp*Ir(2,2'-bpyO)(H2O)], various desirable products were obtained in high yields. Compared with previous methods for the direct dehydrogenative coupling of secondary alcohols with primary alcohols to α-alkylated ketones, this protocol has obvious advantages including complete selectivity for α-alkylated ketones and more environmentally benign conditions. Notably, the study also exhibited the potential to develop tandem reactions catalyzed using a metal-ligand bifunctional iridium complex.

Abstract:An efficient asymmetric tandem reaction of o-alkynylbenzaldehydes, amines, and diazo compounds catalyzed by chiral silver imidodiphosphate has been established. Chiral 1,2-dihydroisoquinoline analogues have a tertiary stereocenter at the C1 position, and substituents at the C3 position are available with up to 97% yields and 98% ee. Abstract:Tandem Meinwald rearrangement and nucleophilic substitution of oxiranenitriles was realized. Arylacetic acid derivatives were readily synthesized from 3-aryloxirane-2-carbonitriles with amines, alcohols, or water in the presence of boron trifluoride under microwave irradiation, and the designed synthetic strategy includes introducing a cyano leaving group into arylepoxides and capturing the in situ generated toxic cyanide with boron trifluoride, making the reaction efficient, safe, and environmentally benign. The reaction occurs through an acid-promoted Meinwald rearrangement, producing arylacetyl cyanides, followed by an addition-elimination process with nitrogen or oxygen-containing nucleophilic amines, alcohols or water. The current method provides a new application of the tandem Meinwald rearrangement.
