Abstract:A novel BOPIM (boron 2-(2-pyridyl)imidazole complex) dye 1 was facilely synthesized by treatment of previously reported 2-(2′-pyridyl)imidazole with BF3·Et2O under basic condition. The bromination of BOPIM dye 1 by NBS gives an unexpected product 2-(2′-pyridyl)-4,5-dibromoimidazole (L2) with no BF2 group. The desired brominated boron complex 2 was obtained by treating L2 with BF3·Et2O. The photophysical properties of these two compounds are thoroughly studied in various solvents. Compound 1 formed aggregates in non-polar solvents, inducing abnormal emission in long-wavelength region. Both 1 and 2 show moderate fluorescent intensity and comparatively large Stokes shift, especially for compound 2 (fluorescent quantum yield is more than 0.30, and Stokes shift is over 70nm in all adopted solvents) due to its p, π-conjugated effect, which makes BOPIM a valuable building block for synthesis of multi-functional materials.

Abstract:New BODIPY dyes have been synthesized via the condensation of R–CH2COCl (R=H, Br, Cl and Et2N) with 2,4-dimethylpyrrole and the coordination with BF3 etherate. The acetyl chlorides with electron-withdrawing substituents (R=Br or Cl) are easier to react with the 2,4-dimethylpyrrole to form the related dyes and make a red-shift in absorbance and fluorescence maximum. Dye 4 (R=Et2N), based on PET mechanism, exhibits good properties as a pH fluorescent sensor with a pKa of 8.74 and a 15-fold fluorescence enhancement in the pH range of 9.38–7.60.

Abstract:Novel BOPIM (boron 2-(2′-pyridyl)imidazole complex) derivatives with large Stokes shift were efficiently synthesized through two-step reactions, starting from commercially available 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde and α-diketone. The dyes exhibit high fluorescent intensity in solution and also in solid state due to the intermolecular non-planar interactions. According to X-ray single crystal measurements, the non-covalent interactions (such as C–H⋯F–B, etc.) play important role in inhibiting planar π–π stacking, and the existence of terminal phenyl rings increases the electronic density of π system, which facilitates the charge transfer from the electron-donating π system to the electron-accepting boron moiety. DFT calculation based on X-ray crystallographic analysis was carried out for compound 2, giving consistent results with photophysical measurements.

Abstract:The small Stokes shift and weak emission in the solid state are two main shortcomings associated with the boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) family of dyes. This study presents the design, synthesis and luminescent properties of boron difluoro complexes of 2-aryl-5-alkylamino-4-alkylaminocarbonylthiazoles. These dyes display Stokes shifts (Delta lambda, 77-101 nm) with quantum yields (phi(FL)) up to 64.9 and 34.7 % in toluene solution and in solid state, respectively. Some of these compounds exhibit dual fluorescence and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emission properties with modulable phosphorescence quantum yields (phi(PL)) and lifetime (tau(p) up to 251 mu s). The presence of intramolecular H-bonds and negligible pi-pi stacking revealed by X-ray crystal structure might account for the observed large Stokes shift and significant solid-state emission of these fluorophores, while the enhanced spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of iodine and the self-assembly driven by halogen bonding, pi-pi and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions could be responsible for the observed RTP of iodine containing phosphors.

Abstract:Boron difluoroquinazolinone-pyridine (BODIQPy) and substituted derivatives have been designed and synthesized. Strong emission with high fluorescence quantum yield both in solution (up to 0.99) and in solid state (up to 0.60) was achieved in these asymmetric BODIQPys. For 6-halogen substituted BODIQPys, the heavy atomic effect of bromine and iodine was suppressed in solution due to the strong electron-withdrawing ability of the BODIQPy core. As a result, 6-iodine substituted BODIQPy shows the unusual fluorescence quantum yields (>0.70) in dichloromethane and tetrahydrofuran. In the solid state, the asymmetric structure induced a unique dimeric structure, and efficient luminescence was also observed. The formation of halogen bonds between carbonyl oxygen and bromine or iodine regulated the stacking mode and enhanced intermolecular interaction, resulting in a decline in the fluorescence quantum yield. In addition, a large Stokes shift was also achieved in these asymmetric BODIQPys.

Abstract:Novel boron complexes bearing pyrrole and π-expanded pyridine structures, such as quinoline, isoquinoline, and phenanthridine, were prepared. These compounds showed the fluorescence emission characters in both solution and solid state. Particularly, several complexes in solution exhibited high fluorescence quantum yield with Stokes shift values being four to five times larger than that of boron dipyrromethenes (BODIPYs). The present paper describes the optical properties of these novel boron complexes as well as their halogenated derivatives from the results of both experimental and computational studies.

Abstract:Small, organic, fluorescent molecules with large Stokes shifts and long emission wavelengths are ideal dyes for various modern fluorescent: imaging technologies such as FRET. In this study, we designed and synthesized a number of new fluorescent molecules on the basic structures of two pyrrolocoumarin skeletons where Fischer's indole synthesis and the Suzuki coupling successfully served as the efficient molecular editing protocols. The examination of the fluorescent properties and further structural optimization of these compounds afforded three new pyrrolocoumarin dyes with notably large Stokes shifts and satisfactory fluorescent properties. Among these, 30 showed a large Stokes shift (113 nm) and intense fluorescence (phi= 0.55,lambda(cm) = 523 nm), and thus showed great potential in biological imaging studies. Abstract:In this contribution, we report the design and synthesis of two N , O -bidentate BF 2 dyes ( TTBKI-1 and TTBKI-2 ), with excellent optical properties like large Stokes shifts, strong solvatofluorochromism, and bright emission in solution, aggregated and solid states. Formation of a push–pull electron system resulted from the introduction of a triphenylamine unit as an excellent donor and a NBF 2 O moiety as an acceptor. Meanwhile, by further extending π-conjugation, the introduction of a thiophene unit resulted in a red-shift of absorption/emission wavelengths. Higher fluorescence quantum yields were obtained by TTBKI-1 and TTBKI-2 in nonpolar solvents. However, with an increase in the solvent polarity, a large bathochromic shift was observed in emission wavelengths but with a dramatic decrease in emission efficiency. Furthermore, as a typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) unit, triphenylamine could reduce intermolecular π–π stacking in the aggregated state. TTBKI-1 and TTBKI-2 exhibited AIE properties in THF/H 2 O mixtures with high water fractions and showed bright solid-state emission.

Abstract:To develop the construction of small organic fluorophores with full color-tunable luminescence through facile synthesis is highly imperative for applications. Herein, novel quinazolinone based BF 2 complexes ( 2a-2g ) have been designed and synthesized. By modifying the structure of quinazolinone ligand, the synthesized boron difluoride dyes exhibited fluorescence in the almost full-color range of the visible spectrum (∼450–750 nm) both in solution and solid-state with good to excellent quantum yield. The influence of three electron donating substituents, such as methyl, methoxy and N,N -dimethylamino group, in quinazolinone core on the photophysical properties of BF 2 compounds was discussed. The position of substituent in quinazolinone has some influence on the emission efficiency, but has little influence on the absorption and emission of BF 2 compounds. Finally, 2g showed good cell compatibility and living cell imaging property.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of three asymmetrical aza-boron-dipyridomethene derivatives 3–5 are reported. Single crystal X-ray structures are described and the spectroscopic properties of the dyes have been investigated in depth based on an analysis of the optical spectroscopy and the results of theoretical calculations. In contrast with what is normally observed with symmetrical aza-boron-dipyridomethene dyes, very large apparent Stokes shifts are observed for 3–5 and the emission spectra are strongly solvent dependent. DFT calculations have been carried out to explore the structure/property relationships and substituent effects.

Abstract:The development of new NIR-II fluorophores, particularly those with facile syntheses, high fluorescence quantum yields, and stable and tunable photophysical properties, is challenging. Herein, we report a new class of small molecular NIR-II fluorophores based on aza-dipyrromethene boron difluoride (aza-BODIPY) dyes. We demonstrate promising photophysical properties of these dyes, such as large Stokes shift, superior photostability, and good fluorescence brightness as nanoparticles in aqueous solution. Because of these properties and high resolution and deep penetration NIR-II imaging ability, the aza-BODIPY based dyes show great potential as NIR-II imaging agents.

Abstract:Novel fluorescent, conformationally restricted dipyrromethene boron difluoride (BODIPY) dyes have been prepared by introducing a naphthalenyl group at the meso position of the BODIPY core. These BODIPY dyes exhibit increased fluorescence quantum yields compared with dyes that have a meso-position phenyl group with internal rotation. The absorption and emission wavelengths of such conformationally restricted BODIPY dyes can be easily tuned to the near-IR range by derivatization through a condensation reaction with benzaldehyde derivatives. The two-photon absorption properties of these BODIPY dyes were also investigated and the results show that they exhibit increased two-photon excited fluorescence compared to analogue dyes that contain a phenyl group. The one- and two-photon fluorescence imaging of living cells by using selected BODIPY dyes has been successfully demonstrated.

Abstract:Two new branched pyridinium inner salt dyes, 2,6-di[2-(N-ethyl-carbazole-3-yl)vinyl]-N-(3-sulfonatepropyl)pyridinium, inner salt (2) and 2,4,6-tri[2-(N-ethyl-carbazole-3-yl)vinyl]-N-(3-sulfonatepropyl)pyridinium, inner salt (3), with N-ethyl-carbazolyl as electron donor group and pyridine cation as electron acceptor group have been synthesized. Their single- and two-photon related fluorescence properties in various solvents have also been examined. These dyes exhibit stronger fluorescence emission relative to the corresponding linear counterpart and common pyridinium dyes with discrete cation and anion components. Three-branched organic dye 3 has a high fluorescence quantum yield as 0.12 and exhibits strong orange two-photon excited fluorescence at 608nm in THF with large two-photon absorption cross-section being 606GM.

Abstract:meso-Cyano boron-pyridyl-isoindoline dyes with asymmetrical structures were synthesized through a facile two-step reaction. Broad envelopes of intense vibrational bands were observed for the main spectral bands in the absorption and emission spectra. Moderate fluorescence quantum yields were obtained in solution, with significant intensity also observed in film, powder and crystal forms. An analysis of the structure-property relationships was carried out based on X-ray crystallography, optical spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations.

Abstract:Four novel borondipyrromethene (BDP) and -diindomethene (BDI) dyes with one or two (dimethylamino)styryl extensions at the chromophore were synthesized and spectroscopically investigated. An X-ray crystal structure shows that the extended auxochrome is virtually planar. All dyes thus display intense red/near infrared (NIR) absorption and emission. The (dimethylamino)styryl group induces a charge-transfer character that entails bright solvatochromic fluorescence, which is only quenched with increasing solvent polarity according to the energy-gap law. The dye with an additional dimethylanilino group at the meso position of BDP shows a remarkable switching of lipophilicity by protonation. Two dyes with an 8-hydroxyquinoline ligand at the meso position display quenched emission in the presence of Hg2+ or Al3+ owing to electron transfer from the excited BDP to the complexed receptor. The BDI dye presents a pH indicator with bright fluorescence and extremely low fluorescence anisotropy.

Abstract:A series of pi-conjugated compounds (1-23) were successfully synthesized by the Sonogashira, Suzuki, and Wittig-Horner reactions. The structure-property relationship about photoluminescence based on these synthesized compounds was systematically discussed in detail. In addition, energy gaps between ground and excited states of these compounds, which were in good agreement with the experimental observation, were calculated by the semiempirical parametrized PM3 method. It was revealed that emission efficiency largely depends on molecular structure, aggregation type, and size of nanoaggregates.

Abstract:Organic dyes with intensive near-infrared (NIR) absorption have shown practical application for fluorescence imaging. Based on Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) and Boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY), NIR dyad BD and triad BDB with two BODIPY units have been synthesized. There is a great steric hindrance existing between the DPP and BODIPY units; however, triad BDB shows a little more effective intramolecular charge transfer than dyad BD, as result in a stronger absorbance of the longest absorption band. According to theoretical calculations, the longest absorption maxima are contributed by the HOMO-LUMO transition for both BD and BDB. Both dyes were then fabricated into hydrophilic nanoparticles (NPs) via nano-precipitation method, the NIR dyes and the corresponding NPs all exhibit excellent photostability. Furthermore, the NPs show great biocompatibility, low dark cytotoxicity on HeLa cells. While taking Zebrafish as the live-animal model, BD NPs and BDB NPs show good fluorescence imaging property.

Abstract:Based on the molecular design and structural modification of boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY), two new BODIPY derivatives with meso-substituted functional indole moieties were successfully prepared. These new compounds were characterized by NMR, HRMS and FTIR, exhibiting the different UV–vis and PL spectral phenomena because of their varied molecular structures in various solvents and different degrees of negative solvatochromism. Theoretical calculations and CV results show that the substituted NO2 group at 5-position of indole is favorable for increasing the oxidation potential of the molecules, while the NH2 group is the opposite. These two BODIPY derivatives have different sensitivities to pH changes, and can be appropriately applied as cell imaging materials due to their good physical chemical characteristics and excellent biocompatibility. In particular, the fluorescence characteristics of BODIPY derivative with the substituted NH2 group at 5-position of indole show a good solvent viscosity dependence, highlighting its potential application for testing the intracellular viscosity changes of the living cell in disease diagnosis.
