Abstract:An efficient carbo-acylation reaction of 2-arylpyridines with alpha-diketones via Pd-catalyzed C-H bond activation and C-C bond cleavage in the presence of TBHP was developed that generated aryl ketones in good yields. The highly selective formation of aryl ketones was observed when 2-arylpyridines reacted with aromatic/aliphatic alpha-diketones.

Abstract:Abstract Pd(II)-catalyzed intramolecular C–H activation/C–C cross coupling within N , N -diphenyl-acetamides allows the efficient formation of differently substituted carbazoles. In this cross-dehydrogenative coupling, many different functional groups are tolerated and the starting material N , N -diphenyl-acetamides can be easily prepared in one step from commercially available acetanilides and iodobenzenes.

Abstract:Pd-catalyzed decarboxylative cross-couplings of 2-(2-azaaryl)acetates with aryl halides and triflates have been discovered. This reaction is potentially useful for the synthesis of some functionalized pyridines, quinolines, pyrazines, benzoxazoles, and benzothiazoles. Theoretical analysis shows that the nitrogen atom at the 2-position of the heteroaromatics directly coordinates to Pd(II) in the decarboxylation transition state.

Abstract:A novel palladium-catalyzed direct alkoxycarbonylation of 2-arylpyridines, 2-arylquinolines, benzo[h]quinolines, 2-phenylpyrimidines, N-pyrimidine pyrroles and N-pyrimidine indoles via aromatic C-H bond activation and selective C-C cleavage of -keto esters has been developed. The method has the advantages of wide functional group tolerance, high selectivity, broad range of substrates and good yields.

Abstract:An efficient palladium-catalyzed decarboxylative ortho-acylation of 2-aryloxypyridines with -oxocarboxylic acids is described. In this new transformation, the aromatic C(sp2)H bond was successfully acylated to give diverse aromatic ketones regioselectively in moderate to good yields. The pyridine group can be removed easily after the acylation to give the corresponding 2-hydroxy aromatic ketones.

Abstract:We report the Pd(II)-catalyzed β-C–H arylation, alkylation, benzylation, and methoxylation of carbazole-3-carboxamide and carbazole-2-carboxamide substrates, assisted by the bidentate directing groups 8-aminoquinoline or 2-(methylthio)aniline, and construction of C2,C3,C4-functionalized carbazole motifs. The Pd(II)-catalyzed β-C–H arylation reaction was attempted using different directing groups such as 8-aminoquinoline, 2-(methylthio)aniline, 4-amino-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole, 4-methoxyquinolin-8-amine, and butan-1-amine. Through optimization of the reactions, 8-aminoquinoline and 2-(methylthio)aniline were found to be suitable directing groups and, especially, 2-(methylthio)aniline was found to be an efficient directing group in the Pd(II)-catalyzed β-C–H arylation, alkylation, and methoxylation of carbazole-3-carboxamide, carbazole-2-carboxamide substrates. An ample number of β-C–H arylated, alkylated, benzylated, and methoxylated carbazole-3-carboxamides were synthesized. The structures of representative β-C(2)–H arylated carbazole and β-C(2)–H methoxylated carbazole motifs were unequivocally confirmed by single-crystal X-ray structure analysis. Given the wide range of applications of carbazoles in chemistry, materials sciences, and medicinal chemistry and there have been constant efforts for developing new methods for synthesizing functionalized carbazoles. This work contributes to the expansion of the library of C2,C3,C4-functionalized carbazole motifs through a Pd(II)-catalyzed directing-group-aided site-selective β-C–H activation and functionalization of carbazole-3-carboxamides. Abstract:Recently, we realized the highly selective one-pot synthesis of 2,6-diarylpyridines by using a Pd-catalyzed direct C-H arylation approach via a transient activator strategy. Although methylation reagent as a transient activator and Cu(I) salt or oxide were found to be prerequisites, details regarding the mechanism remained unclear. In this paper, DFT calculations combined with experimental investigations were carried out to elucidate the principle features of this transformation. The results reveal (1) the origin of the exquisite diarylating selectivity of the pyridine under the transient strategy; (2) the possible demethylating reagent as the counteranion of the pyridinium salt; (3) the reason why Cu2O is a better Cu(I) resource than others.
