Abstract:A detailed study on the scope of the efficient PtCl2-catalyzed synthesis of carbazoles from 1-(indol-2-yl)-2,3-allenols is described. Through isotopic labeling experiments, it is confirmed that the reaction proceeds through a unique metal carbene intermediate, which undergoes subsequent highly selective 1,2-hydrogen migration to afford carbazoles. The reaction shows wide scope and allows the introduction of a variety of different substituents at different positions on the carbazole due to the substituent-loading capability of both indole and the allene moiety.

Abstract:An unexpected PtCl4-catalyzed cyclization reaction of tertiary indol-2-yl-3-alkynols occurred smoothly in toluene to form various poly-substituted carbazole derivatives efficiently. A possible mechanism involving the formation of a spiro-tricyclic intermediate via indole C-2 attack, highly selective ring expansion and then 1,2-migration has been proposed for the formation of carbazoles.

Abstract:An efficient cyclization of 1-(indole-2-yl)2,3-allenols in the presence of platinum(II) chloride leading to polysubstituted carbazoles via 1,2-methyl or an exclusive 1,2-aryl migration of the metal-carbene intermediate was observed. The reaction proceeds via the intermediacy of a metal carbene intermediate, which induces the carbon-carbon bond cleavage via 1,2-migration to afford the products.

Abstract:A mild and efficient method using readily available 1-aryl-2,3-allenols and unprotected-N indoles, Au+-catalyzed cyclization, and aromatization to afford the final [4C+2C] products, carbazoles 4, with an excellent selectivity, is reported. The reaction demonstrates excellent regioselectivity and allows the N-H unit to undergo reactivity unprotected. A mechanism involving a spiropolycyclic intermediate has been proposed and synthetic application is also demonstrated.

Abstract:In this account, we will summarize our recent progress on development of Pt‐ or Au‐catalyzed benzannulation of 1‐indolyl‐2,3‐allenols for the efficient construction of carbazole skeleton via a metal carbene intermediate and its application towards the synthesis of naturally occurring carbazole alkaloids. The strategy enjoys the outstanding regioselectivity, atom economy, mild reaction conditions, substrate scope, functional group tolerance.

Abstract:Indene and furanone are important ring structures widely present in active pharmaceutical molecules. Here, we have developed a straightforward method for the synthesis of indene and furanone via PtCl(2)-catalyzed intramolecular cyclization of α-benzyl allenoates. Abstract:A rhodium-catalyzed coupling-cyclization reaction of alkenyldiazoacetates with o-alkenyl arylisocyanides has been developed. In this reaction, the highly reactive alkenylketenimine intermediates generated by coupling reaction of alkenyldiazoacetates with o-alkenyl arylisocyanides undergo intramolecular [4 + 2] cycloaddition and provide a novel, highly efficient method for the one-step synthesis of carbazoles by formation of three new bonds and two rings from readily available acyclic starting materials.
