Abstract:A new ammine dual-cation borohydride, LiMg(BH4)3(NH3)2, has been successfully synthesized simply by ball-milling of Mg(BH4)2 and LiBH4.NH3. Structure analysis of the synthesized LiMg(BH4)3(NH3)2 revealed that it crystallized in the space group P63 (no. 173) with lattice parameters of a=b=8.0002(1) angstrom, c=8.4276(1) angstrom, a=beta=90 degrees, and ?=120 degrees at 50?degrees C. A three-dimensional architecture is built up through corner-connecting BH4 units. Strong N?H...H?B dihydrogen bonds exist between the NH3 and BH4 units, enabling LiMg(BH4)3(NH3)2 to undergo dehydrogenation at a much lower temperature. Dehydrogenation studies have revealed that the LiMg(BH4)3(NH3)2/LiBH4 composite is able to release over 8 wt?% hydrogen below 200?degrees C, which is comparable to that released by Mg(BH4)3(NH3)2. More importantly, it was found that release of the byproduct NH3 in this system can be completely suppressed by adjusting the ratio of Mg(BH4)2 and LiBH4.NH3. This chemical control route highlights a potential method for modifying the dehydrogenation properties of other ammine borohydride systems.
An Ammonia-Stabilized Mixed-Cation Borohydride: Synthesis, Structure And Thermal Decomposition Behavior

Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis, crystal structure and thermal decomposition behavior of a novel ammonia-stabilized mixed-cation borohydride where the NH3 groups enable the coexistence of Li and Mg cations as an "assistant". Li2Mg(BH4)(4)center dot 6NH(3), which is comprised of orderly arranged Mg[NH3](6)(2+) ammine complexes and Li-2[BH4](4)(2-) complex anions, was synthesized by the mechanochemical reaction between Mg(BH4)(2)center dot 6NH(3) and LiBH4. This novel compound crystallizes in a tetragonal P4(3)2(1)2 (No. 96) structure with lattice parameters a = b = 10.7656(8) angstrom and c = 13.843(1) angstrom with very short dihydrogen bonds, which determine a very low onset temperature of 80 degrees C for hydrogen release and are also responsible for the nucleation of Li2Mg(BH4)(4)center dot 3NH(3) as a decomposition intermediate. Mechanistic investigations on the thermal decomposition showed that the H delta+-H delta- combination in the ammoniastabilized mixed-cation borohydride was significantly enhanced due to the strengthened Mg-N bonds. Upon heating, 11.02 moles of H-2 (equivalent to 11.1 wt%) and 3.07 moles of NH3 are evolved from one mole of Li2Mg(BH4)(4)center dot 6NH(3) with a three-step reaction. The insights into the formation mechanism of ammonia-stabilized mixed-cation borohydride and the role played by NH3 group are very useful as a guideline for the design and synthesis of novel B-N-based materials with high hydrogen content.
Synthesis of Ammine Dual-Metal (V, Mg) Borohydrides with Enhanced Dehydrogenation Properties

Abstract:The penta-ammine vanadium (III) borohydride, i.e. V(BH4)(3)center dot 5NH(3), was successfully synthesized via ball-milling of VCl3 center dot 5NH(3) and LiBH4 in a molar ratio of 1:3. This compound was shown to release 11.5 wt% hydrogen with a H-2-purity of 85 mol% by 350 degrees C. To improve the dehydrogenation purity of V(BH4)(3)center dot 5NH(3), Mg(BH4)(2) with various molar ratios was mixed with V(BH4)(3)center dot 5NH(3) to synthesize expected ammine metal-mixed borohydrides, among which the formed VMg(BH4)(5)center dot 5NH(3) was indexed to be a monoclinic unit cell with lattice parameters of a = 19.611 angstrom, b = 14.468 angstrom, c = 6.261 angstrom, beta = 93.678 degrees and V = 1772.75 angstrom(3). Dehydrogenation results revealed that the Mg(BH4)(2) modified V(BH4)(3)center dot 5NH(3) system presents significantly enhanced dehydrogenation purity. For example, in the case of V(BH4)(3)center dot 5NH(3)/2Mg(BH4)(2) sample, 12.4 wt% pure hydrogen can be released upon heating to 300 degrees C. Further investigation on the dehydrogenation mechanism of the VMg(BH4)(5)center dot 5NH(3) system by isotope tagging revealed that the interactions of homo-polar BH units also participated throughout the dehydrogenation process (onset at 75 degrees C) as complementary to the prime combination of BH center dot center dot center dot HN. Abstract:The synthesis, crystal structure and dehydrogenation performances of two new H-enriched compounds, Mg(BH4)(2)(NH3BH3)(2) and Mg(BH4)(2)center dot(NH3)(2)(NH3BH3), are reported. Abstract:In this paper, we present a new method to synthesize a dual-cation (Li+, Mg2+) borohydride. It is found that Li-Mg-B-H is formed by mechanical milling a mixture of LiBH4 and MgCl2 with a molar ratio of 3 : 1 in diethyl ether (Et2O) and a subsequent heating process. The morphology and structure of the as-prepared Li-Mg-B-H compound are studied by SEM, XRD, FTIR and NMR measurements. Further experiments testify that Li-Mg-B-H can release approximately 12.3 wt% of hydrogen under 4 bar initial hydrogen pressure from room temperature to 500 degrees C and reach a maximum desorption rate of 13.80 wt% per h at 375 degrees C, which is 30 times faster than that of pristine LiBH4. Thermal analysis indicates that the decomposition process of the new compound involves three steps: (1) Li-Mg-B-H first decomposes into LiBH4 and MgH2 and synchronously releases a number of H-2 molecules; (2) MgH2 decomposes to Mg and H-2; (3) LiBH4 reacts with Mg, generating H-2, MgB2 and LiH. Moreover, Li-Mg-B-H is proved to be partially reversible, which can release 5.3 wt% hydrogen in the second dehydrogenation process. The strategy of altering the chi(p) of metal ions in borohydrides may shed light on designing dual-cation borohydrides with better hydrogen storage performance.

Abstract:A novel dual-cation/anion complex hydride (Li2Mg(BH4)2(NH2)2), which contains a theoretical hydrogen capacity of 12.1 wt%, is successfully synthesized for the first time by ball milling a mixture consisting of MgBH4NH2 and Li2BH4NH2. The prepared Li2Mg(BH4)2(NH2)2 crystallizes in a triclinic structure, and the [NH2] and [BH4] groups remain intact within the structure. Upon heating, the prepared Li2Mg(BH4)2(NH2)2 decomposes to release approximately 8.7 wt% hydrogen in a three-step reaction at 100–450 °C. In addition, a small amount of ammonia is evolved during the first and second thermal decomposition steps as a side product. This ammonia is responsible for the lower experimental dehydrogenation amount compared to the theoretical hydrogen capacity. The XRD and FTIR results reveal that Li2Mg(BH4)2(NH2)2 first decomposes to LiMgBN2, LiBH4, BN, LiH and MgBNH8 at 100–250 °C, and then, the newly formed MgBNH8 reacts with LiH to form Mg, LiBH4 and BN at 250–340 °C. Finally, the decomposition of LiBH4 releases hydrogen and generates LiH and B at 340–450 °C.

Abstract:The Mg(BH4)2-AlH3-xLiH (x = 0, 0.5, 1) novel ternary composites have been synthesized through mechanical ball milling, their favorable dehydrogenation properties and mechanism have been experimentally investigated. It can be found that during ball milling, a slight amount of Mg(BH4)2 would react with LiH and transform into LiBH4, while most Mg(BH4)2 remained stable after ball milling. Two major dehydrogenation steps can be detected in the Mg(BH4)2-AlH3-xLiH composite, which belong to the decomposition of AlH3 and Mg(BH4)2, respectively. Remarkably, the onset hydrogen desorption temperature of Mg(BH4)2-AlH3-xLiH composite can be reduced to 125.9 °C, with a total hydrogen desorption capacity of 10.3 wt%. It is worth emphasizing that the reversible dehydrogenation capacity is obviously improved to 3.8 wt%, compared to the Mg(BH4)2-AlH3 composite. This reversible capacity can be held for 3 cycles without obvious degeneration. Microstructural analysis on de/rehydrogenated composite has identified the regeneration of [BH4]- in Mg(BH4)2-AlH3-0.5LiH composite and revealed the role of LiH in the cycling hydrogen desorption and absorption processes. The formation of LiBH4 and MgH2 resulted from the rehydrogenation between MgAlB4 and LiH could be helpful for the stability of reversible hydrogen storage performance.

Abstract:The monoammoniate of lithium amidoborane, Li(NH(3))NH(2)BH(3), was synthesized by treatment of LiNH(2)BH(3) with ammonia at room temperature. This compound exists in the amorphous state at room temperature, but at -20 degrees C crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca with lattice parameters of a = 9.711(4), b = 8.7027(5), c = 7.1999(1) A, and V = 608.51 A(3). The thermal decomposition behavior of this compound under argon and under ammonia was investigated. Through a series of experiments we have demonstrated that Li(NH(3))NH(2)BH(3) is able to absorb/desorb ammonia reversibly at room temperature. In the temperature range of 40-70 degrees C, this compound showed favorable dehydrogenation characteristics. Specifically, under ammonia this material was able to release 3.0 equiv hydrogen (11.18 wt %) rapidly at 60 degrees C, which represents a significant advantage over LiNH(2)BH(3). It has been found that the formation of the coordination bond between ammonia and Li(+) in LiNH(2)BH(3) plays a crucial role in promoting the combination of hydridic B-H bonds and protic N-H bonds, leading to dehydrogenation at low temperature.

Abstract:The strategy of using double-cations to tune the temperature and purity of dehydrogenation of ammine borohydrides is reported. The first double-cation ammine borohydride, Li(2)Al(BH(4))(5)·6NH(3), which forms a novel structure with ordered arrangement of Al(NH(3))(6)(3+) ammine complexes and Li(2)(BH(4))(5)(3-) complex anions, is found to release over 10.0 wt % hydrogen below 120 °C with favorable kinetics and high H-purity (>99%).

Abstract:A novel species of metal amidoborane ammoniate, [Al(NH2BH3)(6)(3-)][Al(NH3)(6)(3+)] has been successfully synthesized in up to 95% via the one-step reaction of AlH3OEt2 with liquid NH(3)BH(3)nNH(3) (n = 1 similar to 6) at 0 degrees C. This solution based reaction method provides an alternative pathway to the traditional mechano-chemical ball milling methods, avoiding possible decomposition. MAS Al-27 NMR spectroscopy confirms the formulation of the compound as an Al(NH2BH3)(6)(3-) complex anion and an Al(NH3)(6)(3+) cation. Initial dehydrogenation studies of this aluminum based M-N-B-H compound demonstrate that hydrogen is released at temperatures as low as 65 degrees C, totaling similar to 8.6 equivalents of H-2 (10.3 wt %) upon heating to 105 degrees C. This method of synthesis offers a promising route towards the large scale production of metal amidoborane ammoniate moieties.
Multi-hydride Systems with Enhanced Hydrogen Storage Properties Derived from Mg(BH4)2 and LiAlH4

Abstract:A two-step ball-milling method has been provided to synthesize Mg(BH4)(2) using NaBH4 and MgCl2 as starting materials. The method offers high yield and high purity (96%) of the compound. The as-synthesized Mg(BH4)(2) is then combined with LiAlH4 by ball-milling in order to form new multi-hydride systems with high hydrogen storage properties. The structure, the dehydrogenation and the reversibility of the combined systems are studied. Analyses show that a metathesis reaction takes place between Mg(BH4)(2) and LiAlH4 during milling, forming mg(AlH4)(2) and LiBH4. Mg(BH4)(2) is excessive and remains in the ball-milled product when the molar ratio of Mg(BH4)(2) to LiAlH4 is over 0.5. The onset dehydrogenation temperature of the combined systems is lowered to ca. 120 degrees C, which is much lower than that of either Mg(BH4)(2) or LiAlH4. The dehydrogenation capacities of the combined systems below 300 degrees C are all higher than that of both Mg(BH4)(2) and LiAlH4. The combined systems are reversible for hydrogen storage at moderate hydrogenation condition, and rapid hydrogenation occurred within the initial 30 min. Moreover, the remained Mg(BH4)(2) in the combined systems is found also partially reversible. The mechanism of the enhancement of the hydrogen storage properties and the dehydrogenation/hydrogenation process of the combined systems were discussed. Structure and Decomposition of Zinc Borohydride Ammonia Adduct: Towards a Pure Hydrogen Release

Abstract:Zn(BH4)2·2NH3, a new ammine metal borohydride, has been synthesized via simply ball-milling a mixture of ZnCl2·2NH3/2LiBH4. Structure analysis shows that the subsequent complex has a monoclinic structure with unit-cell parameters of a = 6.392(4) A, b = 8.417(6) A, c = 6.388(4) A and β = 92.407(4)° and space group P21, in which Zn atoms coordinate with two BH4 groups and two NH3 groups. The interatomic distances reported herein show that Zn–H bonding in Zn(BH4)2·2NH3 is shorter than Ca–H bonds in Ca(BH4)2·2NH3 and Mg–H in Mg(BH4)2·2NH3. This reduced bond contact leads to an increase in the ionic character of H. This study is able to show a good correlation between the reduced M–H distance and enhanced dehydrogenation behavior of the hydride material. Dehydrogenation results showed that Zn(BH4)2·2NH3/LiCl is able to release 5.36 wt% hydrogen (corresponding to 8.9 wt% for pure Zn(BH4)2·2NH3) below 115 °C within 15 min without concomitant release of undesirable gases such as ammonia and/or boranes, thereby demonstrating the potential of Zn(BH4)2·2NH3 to be used as a solid hydrogen storage material.

Abstract:The synthesis and dehydrogenation performance of purified NaZn(BH4)(3) with a new phase and its novel ammine metal borohydride, NaZn(BH4)(3)center dot 2NH(3), were first reported. Structure analysis shows that NaZn(BH4)(3)center dot 2NH(3) crystallizes in an orthorhombic structure with lattice parameters of a = 7.2965(2) angstrom, b = 10.1444(2) angstrom and c = 12.9714(3) angstrom and space group P2(1)nb, in which the Zn atoms are located in a tetrahedral coordination environment with two NH3 molecules and two BH4- units, presenting a novel 3D framework comprised of isolated BH4-1 units and [NaZn(BH4)(2)(NH3)(2)](+) complexes. Dehydrogenation results showed that the ZnCl2 assisted NaZn(BH4)(3)center dot 2NH(3) is able to release 7.9 wt% hydrogen at 110 degrees C without the concomitant release of undesirable gases such as ammonia and/or boranes, thereby demonstrating the potential of the ammoniated Zn-based borohydrides to be used as solid hydrogen storage materials.

Abstract:The synthesis and hydrogen-storage properties of the mixed alkali metal and alkaline-earth metal borohydride are systematically investigated. It is found that mechanical milling a mixture of LiBH4 and CaCl2 with molar ratio of 3:1 in tetrahydrofuran (THF) forms a new LiBH4 center dot Ca(BH4)(2)center dot 2THF compound. Thermal analysis indicates that the decomposition process of the new compound involves four steps: (1) LiBH4 center dot Ca(BH4)(2)center dot 2THF decomposes first into high temperature phase of LiBH4, CaB6, and an intermediate phase Ca-B-H-Cl hydride and synchronously releases a large number of H-2 and THF gas together with less B2H6; (2) the eutectic melting of LiBH4 and Ca-B-H-Cl hydride; (3) Ca-B-H-Cl hydride decomposes into CaHCl, CaB6, and a little H-2; (4) LiBH4 reacts with CaHCl, generating H-2, CaH2, CaB6, LiH, and LiCl. The first dehydrogenation step starts at ca. 70 degrees C, which is much lower than that of the pristine LiBH4 and Ca(BH4)(2). According to Kissenger's equation, the activation energies of the different dehydrogenation steps are respectively 291.95, 132.06, and 117.13 kJ/mol, except the second decomposition step. Moreover, this new compound LiBH4 center dot Ca(BH4)(2)center dot 2THF is proved to be partially reversible, which can release 5.63 wt % hydrogen in the second rehydrogenation/dehydrogenation cycle.

Abstract:Novel porous hollow carbon nanospheres (HCNS) have been synthesized and utilized as scaffold for LiBH4-Mg(BH4)(2) eutectic borohydride (LMBH). Large loading amounts of LMBH (33, 50 and 67 wt%) have been melt-infiltrated into HCNS, and the significantly improved dehydrogenation properties have been discovered. The LMBH@HCNS composites not only exhibit high actual dehydrogenation amounts and fast hydrogen desorption rates, but also an increased reversible hydrogen storage capacities after three cycles without obvious degradation. Further structural tests have revealed that the over-infiltrated LMBH covering the spherical surface of HCNS could also contribute to the improved hydrogen storage behaviors, due to a strong interfacial adhesion effect that avoid LMBH from aggregation during de/rehydrogenation cycles. Enhanced Dehydrogenation Properties of Modified Mg(NH2)2−LiBH4 Composites

Abstract:Promotion of dehydrogenation based on a combination of [BH] and [NH] sources has been demonstrated to be an effective approach in developing an advanced borohydride/amide multicompound hydrogen storage system. In this article, the hydrogen storage properties of Mg(NH2); LiBH4 composite are studied systematically. It has been shown that the Mg(NH2)(2) LiBH4 binary system exhibits an onset dehydrogenation temperature of 250 degrees C, accompanied by an emission of 5.5 mol % ammonia. Further investigation has revealed that addition of metal chlorides results in significant improvement of the dehydrogenation of Mg(NH2)(2)-LiBH4. In particular, with NiCl2 addition up to 20 wt %, the modified composite exhibits more favorable thermodynamics, as demonstrated by an onset dehydrogenation temperature as low as 60 degrees C. accompanied by the suppressed evolution of byproduct NH3 (2 mol %), which enables this modified system to release 7.3 wt % hydrogen in the temperature canoe of 60-400 degrees C, which is vastly superior compared with the dehydrogenation of Mg(NH2)(2)-LiBH4 alone. X-ray diffraction results indicate that the presence of Mg(NH2)(2), results in an accelerated exchange reaction between LiBH4 and NiCl2, which may be the dominant reason for the improved thermodynamics and kinetics in the NiCl2-added Mg(NH2)-LiBH4 system.

Abstract:An ammonia-redistribution strategy for synthesizing metal borohydride ammoniates with controllable coordination number of NH3 was proposed, and a series of magnesium borohydride ammoniates were easily synthesized by a mechanochemical reaction between Mg(BH4)2 and its hexaammoniate. A strong dependence of the dehydrogenation temperature and purity of the released hydrogen upon heating on the coordination number of NH3 was elaborated for Mg(BH4)2 center dot x?NH3 owing to the change in the molar ratio of Hd+ and Hd-, the charge distribution on Hd+ and Hd-, and the strength of the coordinate bond N:-> Mg2+. The monoammoniate of magnesium borohydride (Mg(BH4)2 center dot NH3) was obtained for the first time. It can release 6.5?% pure hydrogen within 50 minutes at 180 degrees C.
