The fullerene family is expanded along two lines - derivatization of the C60 and C70 cages, and their inflation towards higher fullerenes. During recent years our knowledge of higher fullerenes has developed considerably. Several experimental groups can now isolate and characterize higher fullerenes Cn with n around and even over 90. Their 13C NMR analysis is however extremely complicated, and even allows for alternative interpretations. Nevertheless over twenty stable fullerenes Cn have presently been characterized (n from 60 to 94). Numbers of topologically possible isomeric cages are high for n around 90 and thus, experiment alone cannot answer all structural questions. In fact, the total numbers of all possible cages, even if built only from pentagons and hexagons are enormous. The numbers of isomers can be scaled down dramatically by means of so-called isolated pentagon rule (IPR). Quantum-chemical computations of higher fullerenes can be performed well at semiempirical level and to some extent also at ab initio level within the IPR concept. The computations always end with several isomers of relatively low energy. Several such mixtures of fullerene isomers have extensively been studied - C78, C80, C84, C84, C86, C88, and C90. The computations demonstrated that the higher isomers cannot be really understood without considering temperature effects, i.e., entropy contributions. This requirement comes directly from the fact that fullerenes are synthesized at high temperatures. In some cases other than ground-state structure in fact dominates in high-temperature mixtures. The topologically possible structures are first generated by a combinatorial treatment. The geometry optimizations can start at a molecular mechanical level. Then the structures must be reoptimized with semiempirical methods like AM1, PM3 or SAM1. The geometry optimizations are followed by semiempirical harmonic vibrational analysis. The interisomeric energetics should further be checked with affordable ab initio approximations, either Hartree-Fock (HF) SCF treatments like HF/4-31G, or even a correlated procedure like B3LYP/6-31G*. Relative concentrations (mole fractions) of the fullerene isomers can be computed using their partition functions (the rigid-rotor and harmonic-oscillator approximation). The thermodynamic treatment has to include chirality contribution (in some cases it can be a decisive term). A special care has to be paid to the symmetries of the optimized structures as they come from a numerical not geometrical generation. The article surveys the combined quantum-chemical and statistical-mechanical computations of several groups of isomers of higher fullerenes and relates them to the available experiment. In particular, it deals with the IPR isomers of C76 - C90. Among them, surprising experimental findings for C80 or ample isomerism observed for C90 are rationalized. The computations reveal considerable thermal effects on the relative concentrations in the IPR isomeric sets of higher fullerenes. The effects result from a complex interplay between rotational, vibrational, potential-energy terms, chirality factors, and can help in elucidation of synthetic conditions for particular isomers. Such effects can never be computed if only energetics is considered while entropy terms would be neglected. On the other hand, the treatment deals with thermodynamic equilibrium (though in fact only with respect to the inter-isomeric equilibrium). It is difficult to guess a degree to which this presumption is satisfied in the experiment. However, the thermodynamic-equilibrium treatment already produced a reasonable agreement with experiment in eight isomeric systems (C76, C78, C80, C84, C84, C86, C88), with no serious failure. This relatively large set strengthens the believe in its still wider applicability and thus, in its research potential for various fullerene systems relevant to materials science.
