Abstract:A regioselective oxyalkylation reaction of vinylarenes with cyclic ethers was developed under the catalysis of a new heterogeneous catalyst, the diatomite-supported Mn(3)O(4) nanoparticles (SMONP-1). The use of this heterogeneous catalyst provided a novel approach for the synthesis of α-carbonyled β-alkylated aryl derivatives via a sp(3) C-H bond functionalization under mild aerobic conditions.

Abstract:A tetradentate nitrogen ligand containing a benzimidazole ring and an electron-rich pyridine ring was developed, the resulting manganese complex exhibited good activity in the C-H oxidation of simple alkanes. In particular, cyclic aliphatic alkanes were transformed into ketones in very good yields (up to 89 %) by using environmentally benign H2 O2 as the terminal oxidant. This protocol was also applied successfully in benzylic C-H oxidation, giving the corresponding ketones with very good selectivities. In addition, tertiary C-H bond oxidation of complex molecules by the manganese complex showed potential utility for assembling alcohols with good selectivity in late-stage chemical synthesis.

Abstract:Bioinspired manganese complexes have emerged as attractive catalysts for a number of selective oxidation reactions over the past several decades. In the present study, we report the enantioselective oxidation of spirocyclic compounds with manganese complexes bearing tetradentate N4 ligands as catalysts and aqueous H2O2 as a terminal oxidant under mild conditions; spirocyclic tetralone (1a) and its derivatives bearing electron-donating and -withdrawing substituents are converted to their corresponding chiral spirocyclic beta,beta'-diketones with high yields and enantioselectivities. Spirocyclic indanones are also converted to the beta,beta'-spirobiindanones with high enantioselectivities. Indeed, the reaction expands the diversity of chiral spirocyclic diketones via a late-stage oxidative process. In addition, it is of importance to note that the catalytic reaction can be easily scaled up and the chiral spirocyclic beta,beta'-diketones can be transformed into diol products. In mechanistic studies, we have shown that (1) ketones were yielded as products via the initial formation of alcohols, followed by the further oxidation of the alcohols to ketones, (2) hydrogen atom (H atom) abstraction from the methylene C-H bonds of 1a by a putative Mn(V)-oxo intermediate was proposed to be the rate-determining step, and (3) the C-H bond hydroxylation of 1a by the Mn(V)-oxo species was proposed to occur via oxygen rebound mechanism. On the basis of these results, we have proposed a plausible mechanism for the selective C-H bond oxidation of hydrocarbons by bioinspired manganese catalysts and hydrogen peroxide.

Abstract:Selective oxidation of olefins to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones under mild reaction conditions has attracted considerable interest, since alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones can serve as synthetic precursors for various downstream chemical products. The major inherent challenges with this chemical oxidation are chemo- and regio-selectivity as well as environmental concerns, i.e. catalyst recycle, safety and cost. Using atmospheric oxygen as an environmentally friendly oxidant, we found that a metal-organic framework (MOF) constructed with Mn and a tetrazolate ligand (CPF-5) showed good activity and selectivity for the allylic oxidation of olefins to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones. Under the optimized conditions, we could achieve 98% conversion of cyclohexene and 87% selectivity toward cyclohexanone. The combination of a substoichiometric amount of TBHP (tert-butylhydroperoxide) and oxygen not only provides a cost effective oxidation system but significantly enhances the selectivity to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones, outperforming most reported oxidation methods. This catalytic system is heterogeneous in nature, and CPF-5 could be reused at least five times without a significant decrease in its catalytic activity and selectivity.
Mechanisms and Origins of Chemo- and Regioselectivities of Ru(II)-Catalyzed Decarboxylative C-H Alkenylation of Aryl Carboxylic Acids with Alkynes: A Computational Study.

Abstract:The mechanisms and chemo- and regioselectivities of Ru(II)-catalyzed decarboxylative C-H alkenylation of aryl carboxylic acids with alkynes were investigated with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The catalytic cycle involves sequential carboxylate-directed C-H activation, alkyne insertion, decarboxylation and protonation. The facile tether-assisted decarboxylation step directs the intermediate toward the desired decarboxylative alkenylation, instead of typical annulation and double alkenylation pathways. The decarboxylation barrier is very sensitive to the tether length, and only the seven-membered ring intermediate can selectively undergo the designed decarboxylation, suggesting a tether-dependent chemoselectivity. This tether-dependent chemoselectivity also applies to the alkyl tethers. In addition, the polarity of solvent is found to control the chemoselectivity between the decarboxylative alkenylation and [4 + 2] annulation. Solvent with low polarity (toluene) favors the decarboxylation pathway, leading to the decarboxylative alkenylation. Solvent with high polarity (methanol) favors the ionic stepwise C-O reductive elimination pathway, leading to the [4 + 2] annulation. To understand the origins of regioselectivity with asymmetric alkynes, the distortion/interaction analysis was applied to the alkyne insertion transition states, and led to a predictive frontier molecular orbital model. The asymmetric alkynes selectively use the terminal with the larger HOMO orbital coefficient to form the C-C bond in the insertion step.

Abstract:Mn(I)-catalyzed selective functionalization of alkynes permits the convenient synthesis of substituted alkenes with high step and atom economies. Although the insertion of five-membered chelated manganacycle intermediates into alkynes has been widely reported, nonchelated Ar–Mn(I) species originating from commercially available arylboronic acids are unprecedented. Our new protocol achieved a challenging hydroarylation of unsymmetrical 1,3-diynes with arylboronic acids with complete regio-, stereo-, and chemoselectivity to give a wide array of trisubstituted conjugated (Z)-enynes in moderate to good yields.

Abstract:The chemical selectivity of a novel active manganese compound [Mn(2)(IV)mu-O)(3)(TMTACN)(2)] (PF6)(2) (1) in catalytic oxidation reactions depended on the structure of substrates and 1 was able to catalyze the oxidation of toluene into benzaldehyde and/or benzoic acid under very mild conditions. The following results were obtained: (1) The selectivity of the oxidation depended on the electronic density of double bonds. Reactivity was absent when strong electron-witherawing groups were conjugated with double bonds. (2) Allylic oxidation reactions mostly take place when double bond is present inside a ring system, whilst epoxidation reactions occur when the alkene moiety is part of linear chain. (3) In ring systems, the methylene group was more likely to be oxidized than the methyl group on allylic position. As expected, the C-H bonds at the bridgeheads were unreactive. The secondary hydroxyl groups are more easily to be oxidized than the primary hydroxyl groups.

Abstract:Achieving direct C–H hydroxylation in a highly diastereo- and enantioselective manner is still a challenging goal. This reaction is mainly hindered by the potential for overoxidation of the generated alcohols as well as low stereoselectivity. Herein, we present an enantioselective benzylic C–H hydroxylation catalyzed by a manganese complex, H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>, and a carboxylic acid in 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol. The benzylic alcohols were successfully furnished in excellent diastereoselectivities (up to >95:5) and enantioselectivities (up to 95% ee). Abstract:The performances of heterogeneous catalysts can be effectively tuned by changing the catalyst structures. Here we report a controllable nitrile synthesis from alcohol ammoxidation, where the nitrile hydration side reaction could be efficiently prevented by changing the manganese oxide catalysts.α-Mn2O3 based catalysts are highly selective for nitrile synthesis, but MnO2-based catalysts includingα,β,γ, andδphases favour the amide production from tandem ammoxidation and hydra-tion steps. Multiple structural, kinetic, and spectroscopic investigations reveal that water decompo-sition is hindered on α-Mn2O3, thus to switch off the nitrile hydration. In addition, the selectivi-ty-control feature of manganese oxide catalysts is mainly related to their crystalline nature rather than oxide morphology, although the morphological issue is usually regarded as a crucial factor in many reactions.

Abstract:A ligand-controlled palladium-catalyzed highly regioselective and diastereodivergent aminomethylative annulation of dienyl alcohols with aminals has been established, which allows for producing either cis- or trans-disubstituted isochromans in good yields with complete regioselectivity and good to excellent diastereoselectivity. Moreover, the chiral cis-products were also obtained in good yields with up to 94% ee by using a chiral phosphinamide as the ligand. Mechanistic studies revealed that the hydroxyl group plays a key role in facilitating the Pd-catalyzed Heck insertion regioselectively taking place across the internal C=C bond of conjugated dienes.

Abstract:Selective hydroarylation of internal alkynes catalyzed by a dimeric manganese complex provides a powerful strategy for the construction of multisubstituted alkenes. In this work, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental studies were carried out to explore the mechanism and origin of regiodivergent hydroarylation of internal alkynes reported by our group. The results demonstrate that this reaction first proceeds via a bimetallic mechanism to generate the active catalyst that subsequently undergoes a monometallic mechanism to run the three-stage catalytic cycle: alkyne migratory insertion, protonation, and active catalyst regeneration. Alkyne migratory insertion is considered as the regioselectivity-determining step. Energy decomposition analyses on insertion transition states suggest that the interaction between the substrate and catalyst is mainly responsible for the observed exclusive γ-selectivity of 1a, while the deformation of these two sections induced by the sterically hindered phenyl group and aryl group accounts for the complete β-position arylation of 1e. The decrease of γ-selectivity with the regulation of a tertiary alcohol motif in 1a originates from the reduced noncovalent interaction. The computational results provide important insights into the origin of regiodivergent selectivities and useful information for further designing and adjusting the strategy in Mn-catalyzed alkyne hydroarylation.
