Abstract:Reaction temperature is one of the key parameters in the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks（MOFs）.Though there is no convergence with regard to the various experimental parameters,reaction temperature has been found to have remarkable influence on the formation and structure of MOFs,especially toward the control of topology and dimensionality of the MOF structures.Theoretically,the reaction temperature affects directly the reaction energy barrier in reaction thermodynamics and the reaction rate in the reaction kinetics.This review aims to show the influence of reaction temperature on crystal growth/assembly,structural modulation and transformation of MOFs,and to provide primary information and insights into the design and assembly of desired MOFs.

Abstract:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are chemically functionalized micro- and rnesoporous materials with high surface areas and are attractive for multiple applications including filtration, gas storage, and catalysis. Postsynthetic modification (PSM), via solution or vapor-based techniques, is a way to impart additional complexity and functionality into these materials. There is a desire to shift toward vapor-phase methods in order to ensure more controlled modification and more efficient reagent and solvent removal from the modified MOF material. In this work we explore how the metal precursors titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4.) and trimethylaluminum (TMA), commonly used in atomic layer deposition, react with UiO-66-NH2 MOF. Using in situ quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) at 150 and 250 degrees C, we find that the ALD precursors react with mu(3)-OH hydroxyl and mu(3)-O bridging oxygen groups on Zr-6 nodes, as well as oxygen from carboxylate linker groups. The reactions occur predominantly at the crystal surface at mu(3)-OH hydroxyl sites, with TiCl4 exhibiting greater diffusion into the MOF subsurface. FTIR analysis suggests that, at 150 degrees C, both TiCl4 and TMA reversibly dehydroxylate the hydroxylated UiO-66-NH2, which is accompanied by distortion of the zirconium metal clusters. Finally, we show that TiCl4 is able to react with the dehydroxylated UiO-66-NH2 structure, suggesting that TiCl4 is also able to react directly with the bridging oxygen in the metal clusters or carboxylate groups on the organic ligand. A better understanding of chemical and thermally driven MOF dehydroxylation reactions can be important for improved postsynthetic modification of MOFs.

Abstract:This mini review summarizes recent advances in experimental thermodynamics of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) Taking advantage of the development in mechanochemistry, near-room temperature solution calorimetry, and low-temperature heat capacity measurements, the energetic landscape, entropy trends, and Gibbs free energy evolutions of MOFs with true polymorphism [Zn(MeIm)(2), Zn(EtIm)(2), and Zn(CF(3)Im)(2)] as framework topology varies were thoroughly explored by integrated calorimetric and computational methodologies. In addition, the formation enthalpies of MOFs with ultrahigh porosity (MOF-177 and UMCM-1) and the simplest structure (metal formates) have been determined. The studies summarized below highlight the complex interplays among interrelated compositional, chemical, and topological (structural) factors in the determination of the thermodynamic parameters of MOFs. Thermodynamic and Kinetic Effects in the Crystallization of Metal-Organic Frameworks

Abstract:The evolution of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been one of the most exciting aspects of materials chemistry over the last 20 years. In this Account, we discuss the development during this period in our understanding of the factors that control the crystallization of MOFs from solution. Both classical porous MOFs and dense MOF phases are considered. This is an opportune time at which to examine this complex area because the experimental tools now available to interrogate crystallization processes have matured significantly in the last 5 years, particularly with the use of in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. There have also been impressive developments in the use of density functional theory (DFT) to treat not only the energies of very complex structures but also their entropies. This is particularly important in MOF frameworks because of their much greater flexibility compared with inorganic structures such as zeolites. The first section of the Account describes how early empirical observations on the crystallization of dense MOFs pointed to a strong degree of thermodynamic control, with both enthalpic and entropic factors playing important roles. For example, reactions at higher temperatures tend to lead to denser structures with higher degrees of framework connectivity and lower levels of solvation, and polymorphs tend to form according to their thermodynamic stabilities. In the case of metal tartrates, these trends have been validated by calorimetric studies. It has been clear for more than a decade, however, that certain phases crystallize under kinetic control, especially when a change in conformation of the ligand or coordination around a metal center might be necessary to form the thermodynamically preferred product. We describe how this can lead to time-dependent crystallization processes that evolve according to the Ostwald rule of stages and can be observed by in situ methods. We then consider the crystallization of porous MOFs, which presents additional challenges because of solvation effects. In spite of these problems, much has been learned about the energetics of the underlying frameworks, where the relationship between porosity and stability initially seemed to mirror the behavior of zeolites, with more porous structures being less stable. Recently, however, this simple relationship has had to be reconsidered with the emergence of some very flexible structures wherein the open structures are more stable than their denser analogues at finite temperatures because of their large vibrational entropies. In the final section we describe how the concepts developed in the MOF work have been extended into the closely related area of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites. We describe recent studies on polymorphism in hybrid perovskites, which is amenable to total free energy calculations using a combination of DFT and lattice dynamics methods.

Abstract:In order to systematically engineer the properties of crystalline and amorphous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) towards practical application, a thorough understanding of their high-temperature behaviour is required. However, key properties such as the thermal decomposition temperature of a given MOF are often overlooked in the literature, leading to a huge gap in our understanding of the thermal stability of this vast class of materials. Herein, we undertake a critical review of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) data from the MOF literature, and question the consistency, accuracy and meaning of the data provided. We use existing data to collate thermal decomposition temperature (T d) values for a series of archetypal coordination materials and their analogues. Several factors were identified which influence the thermal stability of MOFs. In particular: (i) the nature and position of functional groups, (ii) metal hardness, and, (iii) the presence of coordinated solvent molecules were all found to have a significant impact on decomposition temperature. Isoreticular expansion and interpenetration on the other hand were found to have a relatively modest impact. Moreover, we propose that decomposition mechanisms in MOFs may be broadly separated into two categories, depending on whether the decomposition is ligand-centred, or inorganic node-centred. Whilst ligand stability appears to be the dominant factor in determining overall thermal decomposition temperature, the stability of the inorganic node is key in realising solid-liquid transitions and high-temperature recrystallisation within the family. Thus, both ligand and node stability must be considered when attempting to engineer the high-temperature properties of MOFs.

Abstract:The structural knowledge of metal–organic frameworks is crucial to the understanding and development of new efficient materials for industrial implementation. This review classifies and discusses recent advanced literature reports on phase transitions that occur during thermal treatments on metal–organic frameworks and their characterisation. Thermally activated phase transitions and procceses are classified according to the temperaturatures at which they occur: high temperature (reversible and non-reversible) and low temperature. In addition, theoretical calculations and modelling approaches employed to better understand these structural phase transitions are also reviewed.

Abstract:The construction of thousands of well-defined, porous, metal-organic framework (MOF) structures, spanning a broad range of topologies and an even broader range of pore sizes and chemical functionalities, has fuelled the exploration of many applications. Accompanying this applied focus has been a recognition of the need to engender MOFs with mechanical, thermal and/or chemical stability. Chemical stability in acidic, basic and neutral aqueous solutions is important. Advances over recent years have made it possible to design MOFs that possess different combinations of mechanical, thermal and chemical stability. Here, we review these advances and the associated design principles and synthesis strategies. We focus on how these advances may render MOFs effective as heterogeneous catalysts, both in chemically harsh condensed phases and in thermally challenging conditions relevant to gas-phase reactions. Finally, we briefly discuss future directions of study for the production of highly stable MOFs.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as an important family of compounds that have fascinating structures and diverse applications. But until now, targeted synthesis of MOFs with desired frameworks is still a challenge. In order to appreciate the properties and to design new frameworks, it is necessary to understand how to rationalize the design and synthesis of MOFs from a fundamental perspective. This highlight review will outline the recent advances in this topic from both our and other groups and provide an overview of the different factors influencing the structures of MOFs. These examples illustrate some of the present trends concerning the design of organic ligands and SBUs, coordination assemblies, and experimental conditions.

Abstract:The host-guest chemistry of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) has been attracting increasing attention owing to the outstanding properties derived from MOFs-guests combinations. However, there are large difficulties involved in the syntheses of the host-guest MOF systems with air-sensitive metal complexes. In addition, the behaviors on host-guest interactions in the above systems at high temperature are not clear. This study reported the synthetic methods for host-guest systems of metal–organic framework and air-sensitive metal complexes via a developed chemical vapor infiltration process. With the synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) measurements and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), the successful loadings of Fe(CO)5 in HKUST-1 and NH2-MIL-101(Al) have been confirmed. At high temperatures, the structural and chemical componential changes were investigated in detail by XRPD and FTIR measurements. HKUST-1 was proven to have strong interaction with Fe(CO)5 and resulted in a heavy loading amount of 63.1 wt%, but too strong an interaction led to deformation of HKUST-1 sub-unit under heating conditions. NH2-MIL-101(Al), meanwhile, has a weaker interaction and is chemically inert to Fe(CO)5 at high temperatures.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are assemblies in which metal ions/clusters and organic linkers are combined through coordination interactions. Accordingly, the design and construction of MOFs depends on two primary interacting components, namely the connectors (metal ions/clusters) and linkers (organic ligands). The judicious selection of organic ligands to coordinate with suitable metal centers is a key factor in determining the structures and properties of MOFs. The donor atom type, coordination mode, rigidity/flexibility, functional and/or substituent groups and the geometry of the organic ligands have a remarkable influence on the structures of MOFs. In this review, we highlight zinc(II) and cadmium(II) MOFs with 1-imidazole-containing and 1-imidazole-carboxylate ligands. The influence of the nature of the organic ligands on the assembly and structural modulation of the MOFs is discussed, so as to provide primary information and insights into the design and assembly of the desired Zn(II) and Cd(II) MOFs.

Abstract:New metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on flexible tetra-carboxylate ligands and Cu(II) are designed to gain stimuli-responsive materials. Unstable MOFs can be more stable with unabated flexibility by replacing coordinated solvent molecules with auxiliary N-based ligands. Two of them are intensively studied by in situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis and the unit cell parameters during transformations have been observed in detail. They undergo exceptional structural transformations which can be divided into two processes: the thermal-responsive phase transition and the solvent-responsive phase transition. The thermal-responsive phase transition takes place in a narrow temperature interval reversibly. However, the solvent-responsive phase transition is a gradual and irreversible process. The stimuli-responsive mechanism has also been explored by comparing the parameters of the crystal structures under different temperatures. Fascinatingly, their exceptional structural transformations correlate with the flexibility of the ligand fragments and the [Cu2(RCOO)4] clusters.

Abstract:Single crystallinity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) enables the studies of their flexible behaviors with atomic precision.Here,we investigated the structural transformations triggered by photochemical cycloaddition and with temperature-dependent breathing in a series of pillared-layer MOF structures using a variety of pyrazolecarboxylate linkers for the layers and bipyridyl linkers as the pillars.The ethylenic double bonds from the pillars in close proximity undergo quantitative and seteroselective photochemical [2 +2] cycloaddition upon UV irradiation,transforming the MOFs into structures with cyclobutane-based pillars.Furthermore,reversible breathing of the new pillared-layer MOF was evidenced by the 10.8％ unit cell parameter change along c axis upon temperature change between 298 and 173 K.As revealed by single crystal X-ray diffraction,this transformation originates from the relative flattening of the wavy layers upon cooling.These two different types of characteristic structural transformations responding to inherent reactions and external stimuli happen at single crystalline state,providing a well-defined robust system with controlled flexibility.

Abstract:The indubitable rise of metal–organic framework (MOF) technology has opened the potential for commercialization as alternative materials with a versatile number of applications that range from catalysis to greenhouse gas capture. However, there are several factors that constrain the direct scale-up of MOFs from laboratory to industrial plant given the insufficient knowledge about the overall safety in synthesis processes. This article focuses on the study of MOF thermal stability, from concept to prediction, and the factors that influence such stability. The core of this work is a thermal stability prediction model for MOFs. This model can be applied to existing and new MOF structures, and it will allow for an estimation of the thermal stability temperature range of MOFs. This work contributes to the overall advancement of MOF technology and the efforts for its commercial use at industrial scale, combining both experimental data and computational techniques.

Probing growth of metal-organic frameworks with X-ray scattering and vibrational spectroscopy

Abstract:Nucleation and crystallization arising from liquid to solid phase are involved in a multitude of processes in fields ranging from materials science to biology. Controlling the thermodynamics and kinetics of growth is advantageous to help tune the formation of complex morphologies. Here, we harness wide-angle X-ray scattering and vibrational spectroscopy to elucidate the mechanism for crystallization and growth of the metal-organic framework Co-MOF-74 within microscopic volumes enclosed in a capillary and an attenuated total reflection microchip reactor. The experiments reveal molecular and structural details of the growth processes, while the results of plane wave density functional calculations allow identification of lattice and linker modes in the formed crystals. Synthesis of the metal-organic framework with microscopic volumes leads to monodisperse and micron-sized crystals, in contrast to those typically observed under bulk reaction conditions. Reduction in the volume of reagents within the microchip reactor was found to accelerate the reaction rate. The coupling of spectroscopy with scattering to probe reactions in microscopic volumes promises to be a useful tool in the synthetic chemist's kit to understand chemical bonding and has potential in designing complex materials.
