Abstract:A series of PdNi/SiO2 bimetallic nanoparticles were synthesized using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and 2,6-bis(5,6-dimethyl-1,2,4-triazine-3-yl) pyridine (BTP) as ligands through sol-gel method. BTP was proved to be an effective ligand that can delay the reduction of palladium (II), which helps the formation of palladium-rich shell bimetallic nanoparticles. Pd3Ni7-BTP/SiO2 exhibited the best catalytic performance (TOF=180h−1) among all the catalysts for hydrogenation of nitrobenzene under ambient conditions and was successfully reused for at least five times without loss in activity. The excellent catalytic performance could be ascribed to the small nanoparticle size (2.14nm) and the palladium-rich shell structure it bears.

Abstract:A facile synthesis method of palladium phosphide supported on the activated carbon was developed. The effects of Pd precursors for phosphatization, phosphatization temperature, and the ratio of hypophosphite/Pd on the generation of palladium phosphide were investigated, and a generation mechanism of the Pd3P crystal structure is proposed. The results demonstrate that only PdO, rather than Pd or PdCl2, can transform into Pd phosphide without damage to the activated carbon. The penetration of P into the Pd particle can dramatically improve the dispersion of Pd species particles on the activated carbon. The generation of Pd phosphide greatly depends on the phosphatization temperature and the ratio of hypophosphite/Pd. An intact Pd3P crystal structure was obtained when the ratio of hypophosphite/Pd reached 32 and the phosphatization temperature was above 400 °C. The Pd3P supported on the activated carbon exhibited superior catalytic performance in terms of the hydrogenation of halonitrobenzenes to haloanilines because it had few L acids and B acids sites and could not generate deficient-electron active hydrogen atoms as electrophiles.

Abstract:A highly efficient and chemoselective hydrogenation of nitrobenzyl ethers to aminobenzyl ethers was developed by using a novel palladium–nickel bimetallic nanocatalyst. Since the catalytic selectivity was resulted from the synergistic effects between two metals rather than the traditional catalyst poisons, the hydrogenation proceeded smoothly under additive-free conditions. Thus, the work-up procedure was as simple as to recover the catalyst by a magnetic separation and then to evaporate the solvent.
Size-dependent halogenated nitrobenzene hydrogenation selectivity of Pd nanoparticles

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of halogenated nitrobenzene (HNB) has been a great important chemical reaction in the fine chemical productions. In this study, the effect of metal particle size on the selective hydrogenation of HNB over Pd/C catalysts has been extensively investigated through the combination of theoretical (density functional theory calculations, DFT) and experimental methods. DFT calculations showed that the reaction barriers for dechlorination strongly depend on the type of reaction sites (terrace or edge), while the hydrogenation reaction barriers are nearly the same on different sites, which indicates that Pd nanoparticle size significantly affects the catalyst selectivity. Moreover, Pd nanoparticles with different sizes (from 2.1 to 30 nm) supported on activated carbon were synthesized using the methods developed by our group. In a 500 mL reactor, the selectivity is over 99.90% when the Pd nanoparticles are bigger than 25 nm. Finally, the industrial applications of the proposed catalyst were evaluated in several pilot factories. This study provides useful information on controlling the selectivity of other similar reactions catalyzed by noble-metal nanocatalysts.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation of nitrobenzene was carried out under solvent-free conditions using supported AuPd nanoparticles catalyst, prepared by modified impregnation method (MIm), as efficient catalyst. >99% yield of aniline (AN) was obtained after 15 hours at 90 °C, 3 bar H2 that can be used without any further purification or separation, therefore reducing cost and energy input. Supported AuPd nanoparticles catalyst, prepared by MIm, was found to be active and stable even after 4 recycle experiments whereas the same catalyst prepared by SIm deactivated during the recycle experiments. The most effective catalyst was tested for the chemoselective hydrogenation of 4-chloronitrobenzene (CNB) to 4-chloroaniline (CAN). The activation energy of CNB to CAN was found to be 25 kJ mol-1, while that of CNB to AN was found to be 31 kJ mol-1. Based on this, the yield of CAN was maximized (92%) by lowering the reaction temperature to 25 °C.

Abstract:This work reported the preparation of nanostructured palladium (Pd)-based catalysts that consisted of a magnetic core covered by a layer of functionalized mesoporous silica with Pd nanoparticles grown in situ within the porous channels (Fe3O4@mSiO2-Pd). The optimum Fe3O4@mSiO2-Pd with fine size and uniformly dispersed Pd nanoparticles was obtained on the amino (-NH2) functionalized magnetic mesoporous silica support with Na2PdCl4 as the Pd source. The performance of the synthesized Fe3O4@mSiO2-Pd was evaluated in the catalytic reduction of nitroarenes in aqueous solution with H2(g) as a reducing agent under ambient pressure and temperature. Compared with commercial Pd/SiO2, Fe3O4@mSiO2-Pd exhibited significantly improved reactivity in the reduction of various nitroarenes, which were completely reduced to the corresponding aminoarenes. The enhanced performance of Fe3O4@mSiO2-Pd may be attributed to the formation of small and well dispersed Pd nanoparticles within the confined support and the enhanced accessibility of reactive Pd sites within the mesoporous structure. Furthermore, the Fe3O4@mSiO2-Pd catalyst also showed excellent reusability and could be easily collected by an external magnetic field. Results suggested that the synthesized Fe3O4@mSiO2-Pd can be an effective and sustainable catalyst for hydrogenation of nitro-containing compounds.

Abstract:An efficient and highly selective heterogeneous catalyst system for nitrile hydrogenation was developed using unsupported palladium nanopores (PdNPore). The PdNPore-catalyzed selective hydrogenation of nitriles proceeded smoothly without any additive under mild conditions (low H2 pressure and low temperature) to yield primary amines in satisfactory to excellent yields. Systematic studies demonstrated that the high activity and excellent selectivity of PdNPore originated from its proper Lewis acidity and porous structure. No palladium leached from PdNPore during the hydrogenation reaction. Moreover, the catalyst was easily recovered and reused without any loss of catalytic activity. Deuterium-hydrogen exchange reaction clearly indicated that the present hydrogenation involves heterolytic H2 splitting on the surface of PdNPore catalyst

Abstract:In this paper, monodisperse Pd nanocrystals were immobilized on previously reported carbon nanospheres via in situ adsorption and reduction. In this protocol, no excess reductant and capping reagents were necessary, which made the surface of the as-prepared nanocatalysts very clean. Using sodium tetrachloropalladate(II) as the metal precursor yielded palladium nanocrystals with a size around 5 nm regardless of the metal loading, while the use of palladium chloride resulted in a size increase to 18.1 nm. Moreover, the additives used during preparation have been proven to be of great importance in controlling the average particle size. It was suggested that the pattern of the adsorbed palladium ions or the surface environment of support was greatly influenced. Strong adsorption of the palladium ions on the carbon spheres led to a decrease in size. The nanocrystals exhibited excellent catalytic activity for transfer hydrogenation under ambient conditions. The conversion was 83.1% to 100% for several nitroaromatics with moderate to excellent selectivity. More importantly, these nanocatalysts are promising for renewable catalysis owing to their sustainable support, green catalyst fabrication and ease of handling.

Abstract:Developing highly active and selective catalysts for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes, an environmentally benign process to produce industrially important aniline intermediates, is highly desirable but very challenging. Pd catalysts are generally recognized as active but nonselective catalysts for this important reaction. Here, we report an effective strategy to greatly improve the selectivity of Pd catalysts based on the reactive metal-support interaction, by which the sulfur atoms doped in the carbon supports are extracted out and react with Pd at 500 degrees C to form Pd4S nanoparticle catalysts. The Pd4S catalysts that are formed display high selectivity of >98% at complete conversion to diverse nitroarenes (with more than 20 examples) under mild conditions. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the incorporation of S atoms into Pd breaks up the Pd ensembles, which results in the preferential adsorption of nitro groups on the Pd4S surfaces and thus selective hydrogenation of substituted nitroarenes to corresponding anilines. Abstract:Because of the requirements of sustainable development as well as the desirability of using molecular hydrogen as a chemical reagent, it is of paramount importance and great challenge to develop highly active and selective catalysts for the hydrogenation of organic molecules, including substituted nitroarenes. We approach this question by probing unsupported bimetallic nanoparticles. A series of novel bimetallic RhxNiy (x, y = 1, 2, 3) nanoparticles were successfully prepared using our "noble metal-induced reduction" strategy. Unsupported Rh3Ni1 nanoparticles were subsequently identified to be a highly active and exceedingly selective catalyst for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes under ambient conditions, underscoring a remarkable synergistic effect of the two metals. Further experiments showed that the Rh3Ni1 catalyst could be a highly efficient, selective, and recyclable catalyst for a range of nitroarene substrates. This work showcased the value of bimetallic nanoparticles in catalysts development for sustainable chemistry.

Abstract:The hydrogenation of functionalized nitroarenes to the corresponding anilines is of great importance in the fine chemical industry and requires high-performance catalysts with a good activity and selectivity. Herein, hydrogenated MoOx (H-MoOx) supported bimetallic Pt-Sn (Pt-Sn/H-MoOx) was developed to accomplish selective and efficient hydrogenation. In the case of 4-nitrostyrene, an outstanding selectivity to 4-vinylaniline (approximate to 93%) with a high turnover frequency (0.094s(-1)) was achieved under mild conditions (T=30 degrees C, P-H2=1atm). The metal-support interactions contributed to the efficient turnover on the ultrafine nanoparticles, and the atom-rearranged bimetallic Pt-Sn surface promoted the selectivity because of the preferred adsorption of the nitro group. The good efficiency for various functionalized nitroarenes further verified the promise of Pt-Sn/H-MoOx in chemoselective hydrogenation.

Abstract:Hydrogenation of nitro compounds is a cost-effective approach to the synthesis of amines, but it is typically limited by harsh reaction conditions. Herein, we report the development of novel nitrogen-doped carbon-supported palladium (Pd/CN) catalysts that can efficiently catalyze the hydrogenation of nitroaromatic compounds to produce primary amines under mild conditions (room temperature and atmospheric H 2 pressure). Control experiments reveal that Pd nanoparticles are the active centers. Additionally, the nitrogen-rich doping of the carbon support provides abundant anchoring sites for Pd centers, which is likely the key to room-temperature activity. With the optimized Pd 2.0 /CN-300 catalyst, a variety of primary amines could be synthesized in high yields. This study demonstrates a successful strategy for developing novel supported catalysts for mild hydrogenation reactions.

Abstract:Despite its unique physicochemical properties, the catalytic application of nickel carbide (Ni3C) in organic synthesis is rare. In this study, we report well‐defined nanocrystalline Ni3C (nano‐Ni3C) as a highly active catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of nitriles to primary amines. The activity of the aluminum‐oxide‐supported nano‐Ni3C (nano‐Ni3C/Al2O3) catalyst surpasses that of Ni nanoparticles. Various aromatic and aliphatic nitriles and dinitriles were successfully converted to the corresponding primary amines under mild conditions (1 bar H2 pressure). Furthermore, the nano‐Ni3C/Al2O3 catalyst was reusable and applicable to gram‐scale experiments. Density functional theory calculations suggest the formation of polar hydrogen species on the nano‐Ni3C surface, which were attributed to the high activity of nano‐Ni3C towards nitrile hydrogenation. This study demonstrates the utility of metal carbides as a new class of catalysts for liquid‐phase organic reactions.

Abstract:A multicomponent nanocatalyst system was fabricated for the transfer hydrogenation of nitrile compounds. This catalyst system contains palladium, copper, and iron, which are supported on the magnetite nanospheres, and the loading of palladium could be at the parts per million level. Palladium and copper contribute to the transformation of nitrile, and the product distribution highly depends on the alloying of Fe to Cu. The nitriles could be converted to primary amine by the Pd-Cu catalyst in the absence of Fe, whereas in the presence of Fe the products are secondary amines with high selectivity. This could be attributed to the electronic modulation of iron to copper. A variety of nitriles have been transformed to the corresponding primary or secondary amines with high selectivity, and the TOF reaches 2,929 hr(-1) for Pd. Furthermore, the catalyst could be recycled by an external magnetic field and reused five times without severe activity loss.

Abstract:Developing efficient and green catalytic systems is highly desired in the syntheses of alicyclic amines via hydrogenation of nitroaromatics. Herein, we developed Ru–Pd dual active site catalysts in which Ru and Pd species were anchored and highly dispersed on air-exfoliated carbon nitride (Ru–Pd/C 3 N 4 -air). As-prepared catalysts were employed in the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene (NB) to cyclohexylamine (CHA). Compared with single Ru or Pd based catalysts, Ru–Pd dual active site catalysts obtained a higher CHA production rate of 26.7 mol CHA mol −1 Ru·Pd h −1 at 80 °C and 3 MPa H 2 . The activation energy for the hydrogenation of the nitro group and benzene ring was calculated as 26.26 kJ mol −1 and 66.30 kJ mol −1 , respectively. Intrinsic kinetic studies demonstrated that Pd was the dominant metal for hydrogenation of nitro group, while Ru was dominant for benzene ring. Thereinto, the corresponding non-dominant metals enhanced activation and dissociation of H 2 , thereby improving catalytic activity significantly. This excellent performance of Ru–Pd catalysts could be attributed to highly dispersed Ru–N x and Pd–N x at a nanoscale distance, which was conducive to metal-assisted hydrogenation. Stability investigation showed that the performance of Ru–Pd catalysts could be essentially maintained at a high level. Additionally, the substrate scope could be successfully extended to hydrogenation of other nitroaromatics with different substituents.

Role of Pd in the Electrochemical Hydrogenation of Nitrobenzene Using CuPd Electrodes

Abstract:Interest in the electrochemical reduction of organic compounds as an alternative to hydrogen electrosynthesis is driven, among other reasons, by the fact that the products obtained in this process may have more economic value than H2. Furthermore, the technique, coupled with renewable sources of electricity, may open the door for large volume green chemical synthesis. In the present article, the electrochemical reduction and hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to aniline at neutral pH is focused upon, using copper electrodes with and without palladium decoration. Both electrodes present good activity, with a decrease in the overpotential for nitrobenzene reduction and the competing hydrogen evolution reaction when Pd is deposited in the surface of the Cu electrode. It is observed that the rate and selectivity of nitrobenzene reduction to aniline improves at high concentrations, obtaining yields close to 70% for 30 × 10−3 m initial concentrations of nitrobenzene when using Pd decorated Cu electrodes. Impedance spectroscopy analysis reveals that the role of Pd in the decorated electrodes is to enhance the production of H* radicals, necessary for the nitrobenzene reduction process. This explains the increase in the selectivity toward aniline production by the incorporation of small amounts of Pd in the surface of the Cu electrode. Hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to form aniline is a multistep process than can be eased if copper electrodes are decorated with palladium. While first step of the reaction, reduction of nitrobenzene to nitrosobenzene is very efficient on the copper surface, subsequent hydrogenation steps are more efficient on the Pd surface, that supplies these reactions with hydrogen radicals.
