Abstract:The development of efficient methods for the synthesis of molecules with 1,4-difunctionalities has been a dire need of the synthetic community. In this work, intermolecular reductive coupling of ynoates and aldehydes (in the presence of a silane) has been accomplished for the first time using catalytic amounts of Ni(COD)(2), an N-heterocyclic carbene ligand, and PPh3. High regioselectivity has been demonstrated for the multicomponent coupling reactions, and more than a dozen invaluable silyl-protected gamma-hydrox-alpha,beta-enoates have been synthesized. This methodology provides a quick entry to many other 1,4-difunctional compounds and oxygen-containing five-membered rings. The intermediacy of metallacycles in the catalytic process has been established by deuterium-labeling experiments.

Abstract:In this work, (1,5-hexadiene)Ni(SIPr) (SIPr = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolidin-2-ylidene) is used in place of Ni(COD)(2)/SIPPHBF4/(KOBu)-Bu-t (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) as a more robust catalyst for regioselective reductive coupling of ynoates and aldehydes with triethylsilane. The catalytic reaction of ethyl 3-(trimethylsilyl)propiolate and methyl 4-formylbenzoate shows first-order dependence on aldehyde and catalyst concentrations, inverse first-order dependence on [ynoate], and no dependence on [slime]. The kinetics data, coupled with deuterium labeling experiments, support a mechanism involving dissociation of the ynoate from a catalytically dormant nickelacyclopentadiene intermediate prior to turnover-limiting formation of a catalytically active nickeladihydrofuran.

Abstract:The synergistic combination of NiH-catalyzed alkene isomerization with nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling has yielded a general protocol for the synthesis of a wide range of structurally diverse 1,1-diarylalkanes in excellent yields and high regioselectivities from readily accessible olefin starting materials. Furthermore, the practicality and synthetic flexibility of this approach is highlighted by the successful employment of isomeric mixtures of olefins for regioconvergent arylation.

Abstract:Here, we report a cobalt-catalyzed sequential dehydrogenative Heck silylation/hydroamination of styrenes with hydrosilane and diazo compound to access 1-amino-2-silyl compounds with excellent regioselectivity. This difunctionalization reaction could undergo smoothly using 1 mol% catalyst loading with good functional group tolerance. Not only di- and tri-substituted hydrosilanes, but also alkoxysilane are suitable, which does explore the scope of the family of 1-amino-2-silyl compounds. The ligand relay phenomenon between neutral tridentate NNN ligand and anionic NNN ligand is observed for the first time via absorption spectra analysis in this one-pot, two-step transformations. The primary mechanism has been proposed based on the control experiments.

Abstract:A highly chemo-, regio- and stereoselective cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov hydrosilylation of alkynes was developed. Various functionalized groups, such as halides, free alcohols, free aniline, ketones, esters, amides, and nitriles are tolerated, which may lead to further applications and late-stage derivatizations. To date, this is the most efficient cobalt catalytic system (TOF=65520h(-1); TOF=turnover frequency) for hydrosilylation of alkynes. The Hiyama-Denmark cross-coupling reactions of vinylsilanes with aryl iodides underwent smoothly to afford 1,1-diarylethenes. A unique regioselectivity-controllable hydrosilylation/hydroboration reaction of alkynes was also described.

Abstract:Herein, we disclose a general and practical iminoarylation of alkenes by nickel-catalyzed reductive cross-coupling of unsaturated oxime esters with readily available aryl halides, providing an expedient approach for constructing pyrroline derivatives. The absence of organometallic reagents enables the reaction to occur under mild conditions with a broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance. Moreover, other C-based electrophiles, including alkenyl, alkynyl and alkyl halides, or pseudohalides, were also competent substrates for this reaction.

Abstract:An efficient approach for the reversal of regioselectivity in the nucleophilic introduction of difluorinated carbanion into α,β-enones has been developed via a silylium catalysis. The strong electron-withdrawing properties and bulky substituents of in situ-generated silyl triflic imide catalyst is the key for the 1,4-addition reaction to proceed smoothly. The synthetic utility is highlighted by the further use of this method for the synthesis of 2,4,6-triarylsubstituted 3-fluoropyridines in a one-pot manner.

Abstract:Transition-metal catalyzed carbosilylation of alkenes using carbon electrophiles and silylmetal (-B, -Zn) reagents as the nucleophiles offers a powerful strategy for synthesizing organosilicones, by incorporating carbon and silyl groups across on C-C double bonds in one step. However, to the best of our knowledge, the study of silylative alkenes difunctionalization based on carbon and silyl electrophiles remains underdeveloped. Herein, we present an example of silylative alkylation of activated olefins with unactivated alkyl bromides and chlorosilanes as electrophiles under nickel catalysis. The main feature of this protocol is employing more easily accessible substrates including primary, secondary and tertiary alkyl bromides, as well as various chlorosilanes without using pre-generated organometallics. A wide range of alkylsilanes with diverse structures can be efficiently assembled in a single step, highlighting the good functionality tolerance of this approach. Furthermore, successful functionalization of bioactive molecules and synthetic applications using this method demonstrate its practicability.

Abstract:We report herein an intermolecular syn-arylalkylation and alkenylalkylation of alkenyl amines with two different organohalides (iodides and bromides) using Ni(II) catalyst. The cleavable bidentate quinolinamide is utilized after extensive directing group screening to enable olefin difunctionalization with high levels of regio-, chemo-, and diastereocontrol. Abstract:The preparation of enantioenriched diarylmethanol derivatives is described using nickel‐catalyzed electrochemical cross‐couplings between various alkyl/aryl aldehydes and aryl iodides. Performed in an electrochemical cell equipped with an iron anode and a nickel cathode, this electrocatalytic variant led to the scalemic targeted products in the presence of 2,2‐bis((4R,5S)‐4,5‐diphenyl‐4,5‐dihydrooxazol‐2‐yl)acetonitrile (L2), as enantiopure cyano‐bis(oxazoline) ligand. X‐ray structure analysis of a pre‐catalyst, for instance the [Ni(II)(L2)2] complex, with L2 as an anionic bisoxazolinate ligand, confirms the chemical formulation of one nickel surrounded by two ligands. The redox behavior of the new Ni complexes generated in situ was first assessed by cyclic voltammetry showing a redox wave at ca. ‐1.5 V that can be assigned to the two‐electron reduction of the Ni(II) center to the Ni(0) state. Oxidative addition between the electrogenerated Ni(0) complex and aryl iodide was evidenced. An intense current was observed in presence of a mixture of the two substrates pertaining an electrocatalytic process. Interestingly, we found that the sacrificial iron anode plays a crucial role in the catalytic mechanism.

Abstract:A regio-, chemo-, and enantioselective nickel-catalyzed hydrocyanation of 1,3-dienes is reported. The key to the success of this asymmetric transformation is the use of a specific multichiral diphosphite ligand. In addition to aryl-substituted 1,3-dienes, highly challenging aliphatic 1,3-diene substrates can also be preferentially converted to the corresponding 1,2-adducts in decent yields with the highest enantioselectivities to date.

Abstract:A regiodivergent nickel-catalyzed hydrocyanation of 1-aryl-4-silyl-1,3-diynes is reported. When appropriate bisphosphine and phosphine-phosphite ligands are applied, the same starting materials can be converted into two different enynyl nitriles with good yields and high regioselectivities. The DFT calculations unveiled that the structural features of different ligands bring divergent alkyne insertion modes, which in turn lead to different regioselectivities. Moreover, the synthetic value of the cyano-containing 1,3-enynes has been demonstrated with several downstream transformations.

Abstract:Aliphatic-1,3-dienes represent a problematic class of substrates for catalytic 1,2-dicarbofunctionalization due to inherent complications of undesired allylic rearrangement, consequently giving rise to inseparable isomeric product mixtures. Here, we show that aliphatic-1,3-dienes can participate in highly efficient and site-selective 1,2-diarylation, by merging with an aryl triflate and arylmetal reagent in the presence of a sizeable N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)–Ni(0) catalyst. Adducts containing tertiary or quaternary centers and those derived from multifunctional bioactive molecules could be obtained.

Abstract:The development of a catalytic multicomponent reaction by orthogonal activation of readily available substrates for the streamlined di-functionalization of alkynes is a compelling objective in organic chemistry. Alkyne carboalkynylation, in particular, offers a direct entry to valuable 1,3-enynes with different substitution patterns. Here, we show that the synthesis of stereodefined 1,3-enynes featuring a trisubstituted olefin is achieved by merging alkynes, alkynyl bromides, and redox-active N-(acyloxy)phthalimides through nickel-catalyzed reductive alkylalkynylation. Products are generated in up to an 89% yield as single regio- and E isomers. Transformations are tolerant of diverse functional groups and the resulting 1,3-enynes are amenable to further elaboration to synthetically useful building blocks. With olefin-tethered N-(acyloxy)phthalimides, a cascade radical addition/cyclization/alkynylation process can be implemented to obtain 1,5-enynes. This study underscores the crucial role of redox-active esters as superior alkyl group donors compared with haloalkanes in reductive alkyne dicarbofunctionalizations.

Abstract:A straightforward reductive cross-coupling of aryl halides and aldehydes to afford silyl-protected secondary alcohols is reported. The catalytic system features the use of nickel/photoredox dual catalysis and α-silylamine as a mild, easily accessible organic reductant, thus enabling the coupling process occur smoothly under mild condition without the necessity of pre-preparing highly reactive organometallic reagents and using stoichiometric amout of metal-based reductants (such as Mn, Zn). Key to success of this reductive coupling is to identify α-silylamine as a bifunctional organic reductant that simultaneously serving as a reducing agent and a transmetallic reagent to restore nickel catalyst. The reaction shows broad substrate scope and tolerates various functional groups, a variety of (hetero)aryl and aliphatic aldehydes are compatible, thus providing a complementary approach to Zn/Mn-mediated reductive coupling systems.

Abstract:Chiral nickel complexes promoted enantioselective reductive alkenylation of a range of conjugated enones, using alkenyl bromides, triflates, and tosylates. The neutral condition was compatible with sensitive groups and azaheteroaryl rings. Importantly, alkenyl groups in products can be readily converted to functionalized alkyl groups via iron-catalyzed reductive hydrofunctionalization. Some examples of asymmetric alkenylation of N-enoyl pyrroles and indoles were also included.

Abstract:Nickel-catalyzed carbonylative cross-electrophile coupling which emerges as a powerful, efficient, and low-cost method for constructing challenging carbonyl derivatives has attracted increasing attention of organic chemists. To avoid the generation of a poisonous, volatile, and inert nickel carbonyl complex, it is critical to develop an efficient, cheap, and easily available CO surrogate. Oxalyl chloride, a cheap commercially available chemical, is one of the most versatile organic reagents used in chemical reactions. In this work, high chemoselectivity can be achieved with a 1:1:1 ratio of Ar–I to alkyl-I to oxalyl chloride. A wide range of alkyl aryl ketones which present an important class of molecules in synthetic and medicinal chemistry are accessed from alkyl halides, aryl iodides, under mild conditions. Primary and secondary alkyl iodides were suitable substrates. Various functional groups were well tolerated, affording up to 90% yields. This protocol was also used in the derivatization of natural products and drug molecules. Mechanistic investigation indicates that the reaction of Zn and oxalyl chloride under mild reaction conditions could release CO slowly. This knowledge should be useful for the further development of multicomponent carbonylative cross-coupling reactions.
