Abstract:We successfully obtained pure α-CoB4O7 powder sample by a two-step synthesis method. First, a new cobalt polyborate with unknown crystal structure was synthesized by boric acid flux method in a sealed system. Subsequently, α-CoB4O7 powder was obtained by the thermal decomposition of this new phase at 800 °C. The purity was carefully checked by Le Bail fitting of its powder XRD with good convergence. The magnetic susceptibilities in paramagnetic region agree well with Curie–Weiss law with θ = −17.7 K, C = 3.13 cm3 K mol−1. Ac magnetic measurements confirm its long-range AFM ordering at ∼5 K. The field-dependent magnetization curve at 1.85 K indicates a spin-flop-like phase transition, with Hc = 35 kOe. Considering the relatively weak magnetic super-exchange, we believe this transition is due to the large magnetic anisotropy of Co2+.

Abstract:Co2.73Fe0.27O4 nano-particles were synthesized using the heat-decomposition method followed by annealing treatment. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows that most of the peaks are close to the data for antiferromagnetic Co3O4, while weak peaks of CoFe2O4 are also detected. It indicates that the prepared particles can be reckoned as a composite with a small size of the FM particles embed in a large thickness of the AFM matrix. The magnetic hysteresis loops of Co(2.73)Fe(0.27)O4 powders were measured at 10 K by using the zero-field cooling (ZFC) and field cooling (FC) procedures and show negative and downward shifts, and the shifts finally disappear when temperature increases to 200 K. We suggest that exchange bias effect in Co2.73Fe0.27O4 is mainly related with the exchange interactions at the interfaces between the FM CoFe2O4 nano-particles and the frozen spins around them.
Tetragonal BaCoO$_3$: A Co$^{4+}$ Ferromagnetic Mott Insulator with Inverted Spin Crossover

Abstract:The interplay between crystal electric field splitting of d states and Hund's rule exchange energy in cobalt-based perovskites offers a promising avenue for inducing spin-state transitions. This study reports a new body-centered tetragonal (BCT) phase of BaCoO$_3$ (BCT-BaCoO$_3$), synthesized under high pressure (15 GPa) and high temperature (1200 °C) conditions. BCT-BaCoO$_3$ adopts a double perovskite structure of EuTiO$_3$-type (space group I4/mcm, #140), confirmed by high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals a rare Co$^{4+}$ valence state. Magnetization and X-ray absorption measurements reveal a low-spin to high-spin transition that takes place between 200 and 300 K. While spin crossovers are relatively common among common oxides, the one observed in BCT-BaCoO$_3$ is remarkable in that it proceeds in the opposite direction from conventional spin transitions. BCT-BaCoO$_3$ exhibits a low-spin (S = 1/2) state at high temperatures and transitions to a high-spin (S = 5/2) state at low temperatures. Within the high-spin state, hard ferromagnetic order onsets at T$_C$ = 107 K. Electrical resistivity indicates weak magnetoresistance and insulating behavior. Overall, BCT-BaCoO$_3$ presents an exceptional model for the exploration of spin-state transitions and the study of Co spin states in cobalt-based perovskites.

Abstract:Co2V2O7 was recently reported to exhibit remarkable magnetic-field-induced magnetization plateaus and ferroelectricity [R. Chen et al., Phys. Rev. B 98, 184404 (2018)], but its magnetic ground state remains ambiguous. Magnetometry measurements and time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction (NPD) have been employed to study the structural and magnetic properties of Co2V2O7, which includes two nonequivalent Co sites. Upon cooling below the Neel temperature T-N = 6.0(2) K, we observe magnetic Bragg peaks at 2 K in NPD, which indicates the formation of long-range magnetic order of Co2+ moments. After symmetry analysis and magnetic structure refinement, we demonstrate that Co2V2O7 possesses a complicated noncollinear magnetic ground state with Co moments mainly located in the b-c plane and forming a noncollinear spin-chain-like structure along the c-axis. The ab initio calculations demonstrate that the noncollinear magnetic structure is more stable than various ferromagnetic states at low temperature. The noncollinear magnetic structure with a canted up arrow up arrow down arrow down arrow spin configuration is considered to be the origin of magnetoelectric coupling in Co2V2O7 because the inequivalent exchange striction induced by the spin-exchange interaction between the neighboring spins could be the driving force of ferroelectricity. It is also found that the deviation of lattice parameters a and b is opposite below T-N, while the lattice parameter c and beta stay almost constant below T-N, evidencing the anisotropic magnetoelastic coupling in Co2V2O7.

Abstract:We report magnetic and electric properties of Co4Ta2O9, which is a collinear antiferromagnet with trigonal structure. At zero magnetic fields, no dielectric anomaly and electric polarization are observed in this compound. While, finite dielectric peaks and electric polarization develop under applied magnetic field, and increase with increasing field, showing magnetodielectric and magnetoelectric performance. We ascribe the magnetic‐field‐induced dielectric anomaly and electric polarization in Co4Ta2O9 to spin fluctuation and domain effect.

Abstract:The effective spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg-Ising chain materials, ACo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$, A = Sr, Ba, are a rich source of exotic fundamental phenomena and have been investigated for their model magnetic properties both in zero and non-zero magnetic fields. Here we investigate a new member of the family, namely PbCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$. We synthesize powder and single crystal samples of PbCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ and determine its magnetic structure using neutron diffraction. Furthermore, the magnetic field/temperature phase diagrams for magnetic field applied along the c, a, and [110] crystallographic directions in the tetragonal unit cell are determined via magnetization and heat capacity measurements. A complex series of phases and quantum phase transitions are discovered that depend strongly on both the magnitude and direction of the field. Our results show that \pcvo is an effective spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg-Ising chain with properties that are in general comparable to those of SrCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ and BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$. One interesting departure from the results of these related compounds, is however, the discovery of a new field-induced phase for the field direction $H\|$[110] which has not been previously observed.

Field Tunable Magnetic Transitions of CsCo2(MoO4)2(OH): A Triangular Chain Structure with a Frustrated Geometry

Abstract:Identifying and characterizing new magnetic systems with Co2+ ions can enhance our understanding of quantum behavior since Co2+ can host a pseudospin-1/2 magnetic ground state. Understanding the magnetic ground state and the phase diagrams of such systems are central to the development of new theoretical models to described emergent quantum properties of complex magnetic systems. The sawtooth chain compound, CsCo2MoO4_2OH, is one such complex magnetic system and here, we present a comprehensive series of magnetic and neutron scattering measurements to determine its magnetic phase diagram. The magnetic properties of CsCo2MoO4_2OH exhibit a strong coupling to the crystal lattice and its magnetic ground state can be easily manipulated by applied magnetic fields. There are two unique Co2+ ions, base and vertex, with Jbb and Jbv magnetic exchange. The magnetism is highly anisotropic with the b-axis (chain) along the easy axis and the material orders antiferromagnetically at TN = 5 K. The zero field antiferromagnetic phase contains vertex magnetic vectors Co1 aligned parallel to the b-axis, while the base vectors Co2 are canted by 34 and aligned in an opposite direction to the vertex vectors. The spins in parallel adjacent chains align in opposite directions, creating an overall antiferromagnetic structure. At a 3 kOe applied magnetic field, adjacent chains flip by 180{\deg} to generate a ferrimagnetic phase. An increase in field gradually induces the Co(1) moment to rotate along the b-axis and align in the same direction with Co2 generating a ferromagnetic structure. Our results demonstrate that the CsCo2MoO4_2OH is a promising candidate to study new physics associated with sawtooth chain magnetism.
Field-induced Single-Ion Magnet Behavior in a Cobalt(ii) Coordination Polymer Constructed by a Mixed Bipyridyl-Tetracarboxylate Strategy

Abstract:A porous two-dimensional (2D) cobalt(II) metal-organic framework (MOF), {[Co(H(2)tbca)(bpb)(H2O)(2)]center dot bpb}(n) (H(4)tbca = 1,2,4,5-Benzenetetracarboxylic acid; bpb = 1,4-bis(pyrid-4-yl)benzene), was synthesized and structurally characterized. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the monometallic Co2+ ion acted as coordination nodes in a distorted octahedral geometry and bridged by H(2)tbca(2-) and bpb ligands, giving rise to a porous 2D sql network. Thermal analysis reveals high thermal stability of the framework material even losing its guest molecules. Magnetic studies showed that the six-coordinated Co2+ ions exhibit large easy-plane magnetic anisotropy with the zero-field splitting parameter D = 62.1 cm(-1). For the presence of significant single-ion magnetic anisotropy, single-ion magnet (SIM) behavior through combined Direct and Raman mechanisms was evidenced with the effective energy U-eff = 31.8 cm(-1). The forgoing result provides a new 2D cobalt (II) SIM-MOF and a potential bipyridyl-tetracarboxylate approach for the construction of SIM frameworks.

Abstract:In this study, nanofibric cobaltites were synthesized using the electrospinning technique. The research focuses on how Ni and Fe cation substitutions affect the magnetic and dielectric properties of ACo 2 O 4 . X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that all synthesized samples possess a cubic spinel structure. FESEM revealed that the cobaltite samples have a nanofibric morphology composed of interconnected nanoparticles. The dielectric properties of these spinel cobaltites were examined in low magnetic fields ranging from 0 to 10 mT. Using the Maxwell–Wagner model, the study demonstrates that the transport properties of spinel cobaltites can be modulated by an external magnetic field. Dielectric plots of various magnetic spinel cobaltites showed reduced resistance in the presence of a magnetic field, underscoring the significant impact of magnetic fields on the transport properties of these materials. The research also highlights the crucial role of interconnected grains and grain boundary effects on the transport mechanisms. This study provides valuable insights into the tunable transport properties of spinel cobaltites, potentially leading to advancements in their application in magnetic and dielectric devices.

Abstract:Two cobalt oxyfluoride antiferromagnets CoMOF5(pyz)(H2O)2 (M = Nb 1, Ta 2; pyz = pyrazine) have been synthesized via conventional hydrothermal methods and characterized by thermogravimetric (TGA) analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, electron spin resonance (ESR), magnetic susceptibility, and magnetization measurements at both static low field and pulsed high field. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction indicates both compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural and crystallize in the monoclinic space group C2/m with a two-dimensional Co2+ triangular lattice in the ab plane, separated by the nonmagnetic MOF5 (M = Nb 1, Ta 2) octahedra along the c-axis with large intertriangular-lattice Co···Co distance. Because of low dimensionality together with frustrated triangular lattice, compounds 1 and 2 exhibit no long-range antiferromagnetic order until ∼3.7 K. Moreover, a spin flop transition is observed in the magnetization curves at 2 K for both compounds, which is further confirmed by ESR spectra. In addition, the ESR spectra suggest the presence of a zero-field spin gap in both compounds. The high field magnetization measured at 2 K saturates at ∼7 T with Ms = 1.55 μB for 1 and 1.71 μB for 2, respectively, after subtracting the Van Vleck paramagnetic contribution, which is usually observed for Co2+ ions with pseudospin spin of 1/2 at low temperature. Abstract:Ordered submicron ferromagnetic Co-B arrays were obtained through a biomimetic process at ambient temperature. When Co2+ ions complexed to soluble starch were reduced by potassium borohydride in a magnetic field, the magnetic force allowed the nanoparticles of Co-B alloys to array along the field lines and deposit on a solid support. This process is inspired by the migration mechanism of magnetotactic bacteria in a geomagnetic field and this convenient strategy should be helpful for the production of ordered arrays of other magnetic materials. After Co-B alloys are assembled into ordered chains, they exhibit strong ferromagnetic signals in the variable temperature ferromagnetic resonance spectra in the temperature range of 100-420 K.
Impersonating a Superconductor: High-Pressure BaCoO$_3$, an Insulating Ferromagnet

Abstract:Well-dispersed uniform CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized and then some nanoparticles were reduced in a H2/N2 gas mixture followed by oxidation in a pure O2 ambient to prepare CoFe2/oxide composite. The CoFe2O4 nanoparticles exhibited a high Hc value of 15,731Oe and an approximately theoretical Mr/Ms ratio of 0.83 at T=10K as a consequence of the strong surface anisotropy, which have seldom been obtained previously. The CoFe2/oxide composites exhibited the novel phenomena in their temperature derivative curves of the difference between the field cooling (FC) and zero field cooling (ZFC) magnetization, which presented two peaks at a low temperature T1 and at a high temperature T2. The low-temperature region below T1 corresponds to the completely frozen state. In such completely frozen temperature regime, the virgin magnetization curves exhibited an anomalous behavior that the magnetization decreases with increasing the applied field in the high field region due to the enhanced pinning action of disordered moments in oxides on the moments of CoFe2 alloy. These results revealed that the surface anisotropy and dipolar interaction as well as the pinning effect play a crucial rule in the magnetic properties of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles and CoFe2/oxide composite, and further investigations are in process.

Abstract:In this paper, a mononuclear Co(II) compound [Co(H2O)(6)]Cl-2.2C(6)H(12)N(4)center dot 4H(2)O (1) was synthesized and characterized. X-ray single crystal diffraction analyses shows that the Co(II) ion adopts almost perfect octahedral coordination geometry with O6 donors provided by six water molecules. Magnetic properties studies show it has strong in-plane anisotropy with D = +66.7 cm(-1). AC susceptibility measurements indicate it is a field-induced SMM with U-eff = 56.11 K via Raman relaxation process and/or direct process. It is rare for Co(II) ion in cobalt-based compound showing almost perfect octahedral coordination geometry.

Abstract:The isothermal magnetoresistance (MR) with magnetic field $(H)$ parallel and perpendicular to the $ab$ plane is systematically studied on the single crystal ${\mathrm{Na}}_{0.52}\mathrm{Co}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ with charge ordering at $\ensuremath{\sim}50\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ and an in-plane ferromagnetism below $25\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$. The isothermal MR behavior with $H\ensuremath{\Vert}ab$ plane and that with $H\ensuremath{\perp}ab$ plane are quite different. When $H\ensuremath{\Vert}ab$ plane, the MR is always negative and the in-plane ferromagnetic behavior is enhanced, while the MR with $H\ensuremath{\perp}ab$ plane changes from negative to positive with decreasing temperature or increasing $H$, and the in-plane ferromagnetic behavior is suppressed. A striking feature is that the MR with $H\ensuremath{\perp}ab$ plane shows a hysteresis behavior below $25\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$, which is absent for the case of $H\ensuremath{\Vert}ab$ plane. These results provide strong evidence for a spin-flop transition of small moments of ${\mathrm{Co}}^{3.5\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\delta}}$ sites induced by $H\ensuremath{\perp}ab$ plane, leading to a metamagnetic transition for small moments of ${\mathrm{Co}}^{3.5\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\delta}}$ sites. Such complex magnetism suggests an unconventional superconductivity in ${\mathrm{Na}}_{x}\mathrm{Co}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ system because the charge-ordering ${\mathrm{Na}}_{x}\mathrm{Co}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ around $x=0.5$ has been considered to be the parent compound of superconductivity.

Abstract:Electric-field (E-field) control of magnetism enabled by multiferroic materials has the potential to revolutionize the landscape of present memory devices plagued with high energy dissipation. To date, this E-field controlled multiferroic scheme has only been demonstrated at room temperature using BiFeO3 films grown on DyScO3, a unique and expensive substrate, which gives rise to a particular ferroelectric domain pattern in BiFeO3. Here, we demonstrate reversible electric-field-induced switching of the magnetic state of the Co layer in Co/BiFeO3 (BFO) (001) thin film heterostructures fabricated on (001) SrTiO3 (STO) substrates. The angular dependence of the coercivity and the remanent magnetization of the Co layer indicates that its easy axis reversibly switches back and forth 45° between the (100) and the (110) crystallographic directions of STO as a result of alternating application of positive and negative voltage pulses between the patterned top Co electrode layer and the (001) SrRuO3 (SRO) layer on which the ferroelectric BFO is epitaxially grown. The coercivity (HC) of the Co layer exhibits a hysteretic behavior between two states as a function of voltage. A mechanism based on the intrinsic magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroic BFO involving projection of antiferromagnetic G-type domains is used to explain the observation. We have also measured the exact canting angle of the G-type domain in strained BFO films for the first time using neutron diffraction. These results suggest a pathway to integrating BFO-based devices on Si wafers for implementing low power consumption and nonvolatile magnetoelectronic devices.

Abstract:CoV2O6, a Brannerite-type material, exists in both monoclinic (α) and triclinic (γ) forms. α- CoV2O6 exhibits quasi-1D ferromagnetic chains of octahedrally-coordinated Co2+ions in the higher spin state. Fe2+ doped α-CoV2O6 (3 mol%) single crystals were synthesized using high temperature melt method. The motivation is to investigate whether disruption of 1D Co2+ ferromagnetic chains by small Fe3+ substitution alters the antiferromagnetic ground state and lead to stronger spin-frustration. In this paper, we report the magnetic and magnetodielectric properties of Fe doped α-CoV2O6 in detail. The strongly anisotropic nature of magnetic and magnetodielectric characteristics were captured well in the data through orientation dependent measurements with H being parallel to a and c axes of the crystal. Relative dielectric permittivity (εr) exhibited sharp peaks coinciding with the plateau edges Hc1 ∼2.2 T and Hc2 ∼4.4 T in the magnetization curves (M-H) for applied H parallel to a-axis. For dielectric measurements under applied H parallel to c-axis, relative dielectric permittivity exhibited sharp peak around Hc2 ∼3.1 T, again coinciding with the M-H behavior. Such closely related magnetic field induced dielectric transitions reflected in both M(H) and εr(H) measurements is a rare phenomenon and representative of strong spin-lattice coupling in this phase.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, a mononuclear Co(II) compound [Co(H 2 O) 6 ]Cl 2 ·2C 6 H 12 N 4 ·4H 2 O ( 1 ) was synthesized and characterized. X‐ray single crystal diffraction analyses shows that the Co(II) ion adopts almost perfect octahedral coordination geometry with O6 donors provided by six water molecules. Magnetic properties studies show it has strong in‐plane anisotropy with D = +66.7 cm −1 . AC susceptibility measurements indicate it is a field‐induced SMM with U eff = 56.11 K via Raman relaxation process and/or direct process. It is rare for Co(II) ion in cobalt‐based compound showing almost perfect octahedral coordination geometry.
