Abstract:We herein report the regio- and chemoselective hydroboration of terminal alkynes with pinacolborane by a series of Constrained-geometry Catalyst-type or CGC-type rare earth metal monoalkyl complexes. This protocol offers a 100% atom-efficient and straightforward route for the synthesis of a variety of (E)-1-alkenylborons with the advantages such as high yield, high E-selectivity up to >99.9%, multiple metal center, broad substrate scope, broad functional-group tolerance, and no need for a solvent. A gram-scale synthesis and subsequent transformations of (E)-1-alkenylboron to several functional compounds suggest the practical applications of this synthetic methodology. The reaction mechanism has been explored through ESI-MS, isotopic labeling experiments, and in-situ 1H NMR spectroscopy

Abstract:A cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov-type hydroboration of terminal alkynes with HBpin to access alpha-alkenyl boronates with good regioselectivity and atom economy is reported. A new ligand has been developed for the cobalt hydride catalyst that has been used for a unique Markovnikov selective insertion of terminal alkynes into metal hydride bond. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance to deliver valuable alkene derivatives.

Abstract:Borenium-catalyzed hydroboration reactions of a stable, readily available N-heterocyclic carbene-borane with allyl-, alkenyl-, and alkynylsilane substrates provides either standard 1,2-hydroboration products or rearranged 1,1-hydroboration products, depending on the structure of the substrate. A competent catalyst can be generated in situ by addition of bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide or diiodine. In a typical 1,2-hydroboration, reaction of 1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidine borane (diMe-Imd-BH3) with 1,2-bis(trimethylsilyl)ethene provides 1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidine (1,2-bis(trimethylsilyl)ethyl)borane (diMe-Imd-BH2CH-(TMS)CH2TMS)) as a stable product. In a typical 1,1-hydroboration, the reaction of diMe-Imd-BH3 with bis(trimethylsilyl)-ethyne provides 1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidine-bis(2,2-bis(trimethylsilyl)ethenyl)borane (diMe-Imd-BH(CH=C(TMS)(2))(2) again as a stable product.

Abstract:A substrate-directed enantioselective anti-carboboration reaction of alkenes has been developed, wherein a carbon-based nucleophile and a boron moiety are installed across the C=C bond through a 5-membered palladacycle intermediate. A preliminary result also shows it is possible to extend this reaction to alkenes that are more distal from the directing group and react via a 6-membered palladacycle. The reaction is promoted by a palladium(II) catalyst and a monodentate oxazoline ligand. A range of enantioenriched secondary alkylboronate products were obtained with moderate to high enantioselectivity that could be further upgraded by recrystallization. This work represents an efficient method to synthesize versatile and valuable alkylboronate building blocks. Building on an earlier mechanistic proposal by Peng, He, and Chen, a revised model is proposed to account for the stereoconvergent nature of this transformation.

Abstract:An efficient aluminum-catalyzed selective hydroboration of alkenes and alkynylsilanes is reported. A wide variety of alkenes and alkynylsilanes bearing various functional groups and heterocyclic substituents were converted to boronic ester products in good yields with high selectivity. Mechanistically, density functional theory calculations favored a mechanism involving the insertion of the double bond into the Al–H species followed by C–Al/B–H metathesis.

Abstract:A method for the construction of boron-substituted quaternary carbons or diarylquaternary carbons by arylboration of highly substituted alkenylarenes is presented. A wide range of alkenes and arylbromides can participate in this reaction thus allowing for a diverse assortment of products to be prepared. In addition, a solvent dependent regiodivergent arylboration of 1,2-disubstituted alkenylarenes is presented, thus greatly increasing the scope of products that can be accessed.

Abstract:Developing simple and benign protocols for synthesizing alkenylboronates is crucial as they are synthetically valuable compounds in various organic transformations. In this work, we report a straightforward ligand‐free protocol for synthesizing alkenylboronates via atom‐economical hydroboration of alkynes with HBpin catalyzed by a manganese salt. The reaction shows a high level of chemo and regioselectivity for the terminal alkynes and exclusively produces E‐selective alkenylboronates. The hydroboration scope is vast, with the resilience of a range of synthetically beneficial functionalities, such as halides, ether, alkenyl, silyl and thiophenyl groups. This reaction proceeds through the involvement of a metal‐hydride intermediate. The developed alkenylboronate can be smoothly converted to useful C−C, C−N and C−I bond‐forming reactions.

Abstract:Haloboration, the addition of B-X (X = Cl, Br, I) across an unsaturated moiety e.g., C[double bond, length as m-dash]Y or C[triple bond, length as m-dash]Y (Y = C, N, etc.), is dramatically less utilised than the ubiquitous hydroboration reaction. However, haloboration of alkynes in particular is a useful tool to access ambiphilic 1,2-disubstituted alkenes. The stereochemical outcome of the reaction is easily controlled and the resulting products have proven to be valuable building blocks in organic synthesis and materials chemistry. This review aims at providing the reader with a brief summary of the historic development and of the current mechanistic understanding of this transformation. Recent developments are discussed and select examples demonstrating the use of haloboration products are given with a focus on the major areas, specifically, natural product synthesis and the development of boron-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (B-PAHs).

Abstract:Hydroalkylation of alkynes is a powerful method for alkene synthesis. However, regioselectivity has been difficult to achieve in transformations of internal alkynes hindering applications in the synthesis of trisubstituted alkenes. To overcome these limitations, we explored using boryl groups as versatile directing groups that can control the regioselectivity of the hydroalkylation and subsequently be replaced in a cross‐coupling reaction. The result of our exploration is a nickel‐catalyzed hydroalkylation of alkynyl boronamides that provides access to a wide range of trisubstituted alkenes with high regio‐ and diastereoselectivity. The reaction can be accomplished with a variety of coupling partners, including primary and secondary alkyl iodides, α‐bromo esters, α‐chloro phthalimides, and α‐chloro boronic esters. Preliminary studies of the reaction mechanism provide evidence for the hydrometalation mechanism and the formation of alkyl radical intermediates.

Abstract:The hydroboration of alkynes with bis(pinacolato)diboron (B2pin2) using H2O or untreated H2O as a solvent is a challenging task. This work reports the aqueous N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed hydroboration of alkynes with B2pin2, in which a wide range of alkynes with different functional groups are tolerated. The proposed NHC active species are formed through a nonclassical strategy in contrast to the traditional method involving deprotonation of the imidazolium salts in the presence of a base. The proposed NHC-catalyzed hydroboration process can be performed using untreated H2O as a solvent under air atmosphere in the absence of exogenous bases. Mechanistic investigations, including the control experiments, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations revealed that the NHC generated in situ is the true active species. Moreover, an in situ generated diboron-NHC adduct, which acts as a reservoir of NHC and is critical for the stability of NHC in aqueous media, was isolated and fully characterized.

Abstract:Carbenes (R 1 R 2 C:) like radicals, arynes and nitrenes constitute an important family of neutral, high-energy, reactive intermediates—fleeting chemical entities that undergo rapid reactions. An alkyne (R 3 C≡CR 4 ) is a fundamental functional group that houses a high degree of potential energy; however, the substantial kinetic stability of alkynes renders them conveniently handleable as shelf-stable chemical commodities. The ability to generate metal-free carbenes directly from alkynes, fuelled by the high potential (that is, thermodynamic) energy of the latter, would constitute a considerable advance. We report here that this can be achieved simply by warming a mixture of a 2-alkynyl iminoheterocycle (a cyclic compound containing a nucleophilic nitrogen atom) with an electrophilic alkyne. We demonstrate considerable generality for the process: many shelf-stable alkyne electrophiles engage many classes of (2-alkynyl)heterocyclic nucleophiles to produce carbene intermediates that immediately undergo many types of transformations to provide facile and practical access to a diverse array of heterocyclic products. Key mechanistic aspects of the reactions are delineated.

Abstract:The zirconocene complex [{(C₆F₅)₂B-(CH₂)₃-Cp}(Cp-PtBu₂)ZrCl₂] (6; Cp=cyclo-C₅H₄) was prepared by hydroboration of [(allyl-Cp)(Cp-PtBu₂)ZrCl₂] (5) with HB(C₆F₅)₂ ("Piers' borane"). It represents a frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) in which both the Lewis acid and the Lewis base were attached at the metallocene framework. Its reaction with 1-pentyne did not result in the 1,2-addition of or deprotonation reaction by the FLP, but rather in the 1,1-carboboration of the triple bond, thereby obtaining a Z/E mixture (1.2:1) of the respective organometallic substituted alkenes 7. The analogous reaction of 1-pentyne with the phosphorous-free system [{(C₆F₅)₂B-(CH₂)₃-Cp)}CpZrCl₂] (9) gave the respective 1,1-carboboration products ((Z)-10/(E)-10≈1.3:1).
Facile access to functionalized chiral secondary benzylic boronic esters via catalytic asymmetric hydroboration

Abstract:Allylic and homoallylic phosphonates bearing an aryl or heteroaryl substituent at the γ- or δ-position undergo rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric hydroboration by pinacolborane to give functionalized chiral secondary benzylic boronic esters in yields up to 86% and enantiomer ratios up to 99 : 1. Compared to minimally-functionalized terminal and 1,1-disubstituted vinyl arenes, there are relatively few reports of efficient catalytic asymmetric hydroboration (CAHB) of more highly functionalized internal alkenes. Phosphonate substrates bearing a variety of common heterocyclic ring systems, including furan, indole, pyrrole and thiophene derivatives, as well as those bearing basic nitrogen substituents (e.g., morpholine and pyrazine) are tolerated, although donor substituents positioned in close proximity of the alkene can influence the course of the reaction. Stereoisomeric (E)- and (Z)-substrates afford the same major enantiomer of the borated product. Deuterium-labelling studies reveal that rapid (Z)- to (E)-alkene isomerization accounts for the observed (E/Z)-stereoconvergence during CAHB. The synthetic utility of the chiral boronic ester products is illustrated by stereospecific C-B bond transformations including stereoretentive electrophile promoted 1,2-B-to-C migrations, stereoinvertive SE2 reactions of boron-ate complexes with electrophiles, and stereoretentive palladium- and rhodium-catalyzed cross-coupling protocols.
Hydroboration of Terminal Alkynes Catalyzed by a Mn(I) Alkyl PCP Pincer Complex following Two Diverging Pathways

Abstract:A stereo- and regioselective Mn(I)-catalyzed hydroboration of terminal alkynes with pinacolborane (HBPin) is described. The hydroboration reaction is highly Z-selective in the case of aryl alkynes and E-selective in the case of aliphatic alkynes. The reaction requires no additives and proceeds with a catalyst loading of 1 mol % at 50 - 70oC. The most active pre-catalyst is the bench-stable alkyl Mn(I) complex cis-[Mn(PCP-iPr)(CO)2 (CH2CH2CH3)]. The catalytic process is initiated by migratory insertion of a CO ligand into the Mn-alkyl bond to yield an acyl intermediate. This species undergoes C-H and B-H bond cleavage of the alkyne (aromatic alkynes) and HBPin (in the case of aliphatic alkynes) forming the active Mn(I) acetylide and boryl catalysts [Mn(PCP-iPr)(CO)(CCR)] and [Mn(PCP-iPr)(CO)(BPin)], respectively. A broad variety of aromatic and aliphatic alkynes were efficiently and selectively borylated. Mechanistic insights are provided based on experimental data and DFT calculations. The functionalized alkenes can be used for further applications in cross-coupling reactions.
