Abstract:This paper describes the Cu(I)-catalyzed regioselective diamination of conjugated dienes using di-tert-butyldiaziridinone as nitrogen source. The internal diamination and terminal diamination likely proceed via two mechanistic pathways. Various dienes can be efficiently diaminated at the internal double bonds with high regio- and diasteroselectivity in good yield using inexpensive CuBr as catalyst.

Abstract:Various dienes and a triene can be regioselectively diaminated at the internal double bond with good yields and high diastereoselectivity using di-tert-butyldiaziridinone (5) as the nitrogen source and Pd(PPh3)(4) (1-10 mol %) as the catalyst. Kinetic studies with H-1 NMR spectroscopy show that the diamination is first-order in total Pd catalyst and inverse first-order in PPh3. For reactive dienes, such as 1-methoxybutadiene (6g) and alkyl 1,3-butadienes (6a, 6j), the diamination is first-order in di-tert-butyldiaziridinone (5) and zero-order in the olefin. For olefins with relatively low reactivity, such as (E)-1-phenylbutadiene (6b) and (3E,5E)-1,3,5-decatriene (61), similar diamination rates were observed when 3.5 equiv of olefins were used. Pd(PPh3)(2) is likely to be the active species for the insertion of Pd(0) into the N-N bond of di-tert-butyldiaziridinone (5) to form a four-membered Pd(II) complex (A), which can be detected by NMR spectroscopy. The olefin complex (B), formed from intermediate A via ligand exchange between the olefin substrate and the PPh3, undergoes migratory insertion and reductive elimination to give the diamination product and regenerate the Pd(0) catalyst.

Abstract:A cobalt-catalyzed multipositional isomerization of conjugated dienes has been reported for the first time using an 8-oxazoline iminoquinoline ligand. This reaction is operationally simple and atom-economical using readily available starting materials with an E/Z mixture to access disubstituted 1,3-dienes with excellent yields and good E,E stereoselectivity. The mechanism via alkene insertion of cobalt hydride species and β-H elimination of a π-allyl cobalt intermediate is proposed on the basis of deuterium labeling and control experiments and density functional theory calculations.

Abstract:Dual photoredox–transition-metal catalysis has emerged as a powerful tool for the development of chemical transformations. However, its application in the selective difunctionalization of 1,3-dienes remains essentially unexploited. By the synergistic action of photoredox and copper catalysts, we report herein an enantioselective 1,2-amidocyanation of 1,3-dienes. Visible-light irradiation of a chloroform solution of conjugated dienes, N-Boc-amidopyridinium salts, and TMSCN in the presence of a catalytic amount of fac-Ir(ppy)3, Cu(OTf)2·xH2O, and a chiral Box ligand affords three-component adducts in good to high yields with high regio- and enantioselectivities. A L*CuCN complex, fully characterized spectroscopically and confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis, is able to catalyze the transformation, therefore supporting an inner-sphere cyanide transfer pathway.

Abstract:Because of the inherent difficulty in differentiating two olefins, the development of metal-catalyzed asymmetric cyclization of 1,6-dienes remains challenging. Herein, we describe the first rhodium(III)-catalyzed asymmetric borylative cyclization of cyclohexadienone-tethered mono-, 1,1di-, and (E)-1,2-disubstituted alkenes (1,6-dienes), affording optically pure cis-bicyclic skeletons bearing three or four contiguous stereocenters with high yields (25-93%), and excellent diastereoselectivities (>20:1 dr) and enantioselectivities (90-99% ee). This mild catalytic approach is generally compatible with a wide range of functional groups, which allows several facile conversions of the cyclization products. Furthermore, on the basis of our SAESI-MS experiment and computational study, a Rh(I)/(III) catalytic cycle is proposed in this tandem reaction, and the Rh(I) active species catalyzes the overall transformation via sequential oxidative addition of B(2)pin(2), olefin insertion, cyclizing conjugate addition, and reductive elimination. The irreversible conjugate addition determines the overall regioselectivity of borylative cyclization, and the ring strain favors the formation of 5,6-bicyclic structure. This highlights the control of ring strain in diene cyclizations, which provides a useful basis for future reaction designs.

Abstract:We report a selenium-catalyzed diamination of dienes using sulfamates as a convenient nitrogen source. Abstract:We discovered a cooperative gold/silver catalysis mechanism in the oxidative cross-coupling reaction between 1,2,4,5-tetrafluorobenzene and N-TIPS-indole, using DFT calculations. A silver(I)-catalyzed CMD mechanism is responsible for the C-H activation of 1,2,4,5-tetrafluorobenzene, and C-H acidity determines the chemoselectivity. A gold(III)-catalyzed S(E)2Ar mechanism is responsible for the C3-H activation of N-TIPS-indole, and arene nucleophilicity determines the chemo- and regioselectivity. The orthogonal chemoselectivity control provides a mechanistic guide for dual C-H activation reactions.

Abstract:Dienes have been of great interest to synthetic chemists as valuable substrates due to their abundance and ease of synthesis. Their unique stereoelectronic properties enable broad reactivity with a wide range of transition metals to construct molecular complexity facilitating synthesis of biologically active compounds. In addition, structural diene variation can result in substrate-controlled reactions, providing valuable mechanistic insights into reactivity and selectivity. The last decade has seen a wealth of new methodologies involving diene substrates through the power of transition metal catalysis. This review summarizes recent advances and remaining opportunities for transition metal-catalyzed transformations involving dienes.
