Abstract:For closed odd-dimensional manifolds with sectional curvature less than or equal to − 1, we establish the concept of minimal surface entropy that counts the number of surface subgroups. Additionally, we demonstrate that the minimal surface entropy attains the minimum value if and only if the metric is hyperbolic.

We construct closed surfaces which map by immersions into M so that for each one the corresponding mapping on the universal covering spaces is an embedding, or, in other words, the corresponding induced mapping on fundamental groups is an injection.

Abstract:Given a hyperbolic surface $\Sigma$ of genus $g$ with $r$ cusps, Mirzakhani proved that the number of closed geodesics of length at most $L$ and of a given type is asymptotic to $cL^{6g-6+2r}$ for some $c>0$. Since a closed geodesic corresponds to a conjugacy class of the fundamental group $\pi_1(\Sigma )$, we extend this to the counting problem of conjugacy classes of finitely generated subgroups of $\pi_1(\Sigma )$. Using `half the sum of the lengths of the boundaries of the convex core of a subgroup' instead of the length of a closed geodesic, we prove that the number of such conjugacy classes is similarly asymptotic to $cL^{6g-6+2r}$ for some $c>0$. Furthermore, we see that this measurement for subgroups is `natural' within the framework of subset currents, which serve as a completion of weighted conjugacy classes of finitely generated subgroups of $\pi_1(\Sigma )$.

Abstract:We study the distribution of geometrically and topologically nearly geodesic random surfaces in a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold M. In particular, we describe PSL(2,R) invariant measures on the Grassmann bundle G(M) which arise as limits of random minimal surfaces. It is showed that if M contains at least one totally geodesic subsurface then every topological limiting measure is totally scarring (i.e supported on the totally geodesic locus), while we prove that geometrical limiting measures are never totally scarring.

Abstract:Among other things, we prove the following two topological statements about closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. First, every rational second homology class of a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has a positive integral multiple represented by an oriented connected closed pi(1)-injectively immersed quasi-Fuchsian subsurface. Second, every rationally null-homologous, pi(1)-injectively immersed oriented closed 1-submanifold in a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has an equidegree finite cover which bounds an oriented connected compact pi(1)-injectively immersed quasi-Fuchsian subsurface. In, we exploit techniques developed by Kahn and Markovic but we only distill geometric and topological ingredients from those papers, so no hard analysis is involved in this article.

Abstract:Let $$1 \to H \to G \to Q \to 1$$ be an exact sequence where $H= \pi_1(S)$ is the fundamental group of a closed surface $S$ of genus greater than one, $G$ is hyperbolic and $Q$ is finitely generated free. The aim of this paper is to provide sufficient conditions to prove that $G$ is cubulable and construct examples satisfying these conditions. The main result may be thought of as a combination theorem for virtually special hyperbolic groups when the amalgamating subgroup is not quasiconvex. Ingredients include the theory of tracks, the quasiconvex hierarchy theorem of Wise, the distance estimates in the mapping class group from subsurface projections due to Masur-Minsky and the model geometry for doubly degenerate Kleinian surface groups used in the proof of the ending lamination theorem. An appendix to this paper by Manning, Mj, and Sageev proves a reduction theorem by showing that cubulability of $G$ follows from the existence of an essential incompressible quasiconvex track in a surface bundle over a graph with fundamental group $G$.

Abstract:We study the set vol( M, G) of volumes of all representations where M is a closed oriented 3- manifold and G is either Iso(+)H(3) or Iso(e)SL(2)(R)By various methods, including relations between the volume of representations and the ChernSimons invariants of flat connections, and recent results of surfaces in 3- manifolds, we prove that any 3- manifold M with positive Gromov simplicial volume has a finite cover M with and that any non- geometric 3-manifold M containing at least one Seifert piece has a finite cover M with vol(M, Isoe SL2(R)) = {0}.We also find 3-manifolds M with positive simplicial volume but vol(M, Iso+ H 3) = {0}, and non-trivial graph manifolds M with vol(M, Isoe SL2(R)) = {0}, proving that it is in general necessary to pass to some finite covering to guarantee that vol(M, G) = {0}.Besides we determine vol(M, G) when M supports the Seifert geometry.
Counting double cosets with application to generic 3-manifolds

Abstract:We study the growth of double cosets in the class of groups with contracting elements, including relatively hyperbolic groups, CAT(0) groups and mapping class groups among others. Generalizing a recent work of Gitik and Rips about hyperbolic groups, we prove that the double coset growth of two Morse subgroups of infinite index is comparable with the orbital growth function. The same result is further obtained for a more general class of subgroups whose limit sets are proper subsets in the entire limit set of the ambient group. As an application, we confirm a conjecture of Maher that hyperbolic 3-manifolds are exponentially generic in the set of 3-manifolds built from Heegaard splitting using complexity in Teichmüller metric.

Abstract:We study the enumerative geometry of algebraic curves on abelian surfaces and threefolds. In the abelian surface case, the theory is parallel to the well-developed study of the reduced Gromov-Witten theory of K3 surfaces. We prove complete results in all genera for primitive classes. The generating series are quasimodular forms of pure weight. Conjectures for imprimitive classes are presented. In genus 2, the counts in all classes are proven. Special counts match the Euler characteristic calculations of the moduli spaces of stable pairs on abelian surfaces by Göttsche-Shende. A formula for hyperelliptic curve counting in terms of Jacobi forms is proven (modulo a transversality statement). For abelian threefolds, complete conjectures in terms of Jacobi forms for the generating series of curve counts in primitive classes are presented. The base cases make connections to classical lattice counts of Debarre, Goettsche, and Lange-Sernesi. Further evidence is provided by Donaldson-Thomas partition function computations for abelian threefolds. A multiple cover structure is presented. The abelian threefold conjectures open a new direction in the subject.

Counting 3-uple Veronese surfaces

Abstract:This paper culminates in the count of the number of 3-Veronese surfaces passing through 13 general points. This follows the case of 2-Veronese surfaces discovered by Coble in the 1920's. One important element of the calculation is a direct construction of a space of "complete triangles." Our construction is different from the classical ordered constructions of Schubert, Collino and Fulton, as it occurs directly on the Hilbert scheme of length 3 subschemes of the plane. We transport the enumerative problem into a 26-dimensional Grassmannian bundle over our space of complete triangles, where we perform Atiyah-Bott localization. Several important questions arise, which we collect at the end of the paper.

Abstract:This paper presents some finiteness results for the number of boundary slopes of immersed essential surfaces of given genus g in a compact 3-manifold with torus boundary. In the case of hyperbolic 3-manifolds we obtain uniform quadratic bounds in g for the number of possible slopes, independent of the 3-manifold. We also look at some related quantities, such as how many times the slopes of two such surfaces of specified genus can intersect.

Abstract:By refining the volume estimate of Heintze and Karcher [11], we obtain a sharp pinching estimate for the genus of a surface in , which involves an integral of the norm of its traceless second fundamental form. More specifically, we show that if g is the genus of a closed orientable surface in a 3-dimensional orientable Riemannian manifold M whose sectional curvature is bounded below by 1, then , where is the traceless second fundamental form and f is an explicit function. As a result, the space of closed orientable embedded minimal surfaces with uniformly bounded is compact in the topology for any .

Abstract:We construct a hyperbolic 3-manifold M (with ∂M totally geodesic) which contains no essential closed surfaces, but for any even integer g > 0, there are infinitely many separating slopes r on ∂M so that M [r], the 3-manifold obtained by attaching 2-handle to M along r, contains an essential separating closed surface of genus g and is still hyperbolic.The result contrasts sharply with those known finiteness results for the cases g = 0, 1.Our 3-manifold M is the complement of a simple small knot in a handlebody.

Counting geodesics on expander surfaces

Abstract:We study properties of typical closed geodesics on expander surfaces of high genus, i.e. closed hyperbolic surfaces with a uniform spectral gap of the Laplacian. Under an additional systole lower bound assumption, we show almost every geodesic of length much greater than $\sqrt{g}\log g$ is non-simple. And we prove almost every closed geodesic of length much greater than $g (\log g)^2$ is filling, i.e. each component of the complement of the geodesic is a topological disc. Our results apply to Weil-Petersson random surfaces, random covers of a fixed surface, and Brooks-Makover random surfaces, since these models are known to have uniform spectral gap asymptotically almost surely. Our proof technique involves adapting Margulis' counting strategy to work at low length scales.

Abstract:Various estimates of the lower bound of the holomorphic invariant α(M), defined in [T], are given here by using branched coverings, potential estimates and Lelong numbers of positive,d-closed (1, 1) currents of certain type, etc. These estimates are then applied to produce Kähler-Einstein metrics on complex surfaces withC1>0, in particular, we prove that there are Kähler-Einstein structures withC1>0 on any manifold of differential type$CP^2 \# \overline {nCP^2 } (3 \leqq n \leqq 8)$.
Hyperbolic groups and spherical minimal surfaces

Abstract:Let $M$ be a closed, oriented, negatively curved, $n$-dimensional manifold with fundamental group $\Gamma$. Let $S^\infty$ be the unit sphere in $\ell^2(\Gamma)$, on which $\Gamma$ acts by the regular representation. The spherical volume of $M$ is a topological invariant introduced by Besson-Courtois-Gallot. We show that it is equal to the area of an $n$-dimensional area-minimizing minimal surface inside the ultralimit of $S^\infty/\Gamma$, in the sense of Ambrosio-Kirchheim. Our proof combines the theory of metric currents with a study of limits of the regular representation of torsion-free hyperbolic groups.

Volume and topology of bounded and closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds, II

Abstract:Let $N$ be a compact, orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold whose boundary is a connected totally geodesic surface of genus $2$. If $N$ has Heegaard genus at least $5$, then its volume is greater than $2V_{\rm oct}$, where $V_{\rm oct}=3.66\ldots$ denotes the volume of a regular ideal hyperbolic octahedron in $\mathbb{H}^3$. This improves the lower bound given in our earlier paper ``Volume and topology of bounded and closed hyperbolic $3$-manifolds.'' One ingredient in the improved bound is that in a crucial case, instead of using a single ``muffin'' in $N$ in the sense of Kojima and Miyamoto, we use two disjoint muffins. By combining the result about manifolds with geodesic boundary with the $\log(2k-1)$ theorem and results due to Agol-Culler-Shalen and Shalen-Wagreich, we show that if $M$ is a closed, orientable hyperbolic $3$-manifold with $\mathop{\rm vol} M\le V_{\rm oct}/2$, then $\dim H_1(M;\mathbb{F}_2)\le4$. We also provide new lower bounds for the volumes of closed hyperbolic $3$-manifolds whose cohomology ring over $\mathbb{F}_2$ satisfies certain restrictions; these improve results that were proved in ``Volume and topology$\ldots$.''
