Abstract:Magnetorheological materials refer to field-response smart materials whose properties are controllable with a magnetic field, including fluid, grease, elastomer, and gel. The unique magnetorheological effect exhibited by these smart materials is a physical phenomenon where physics and engineering intersect and has extensive application prospects in modern machinery. In electro-mechanical systems, magnetorheological materials offer a superior design method for mechanical devices used in the fields of transmission, damping, and braking. It is important to control the magnetorheological materials for advancing the design philosophy of modern electro-mechanical devices. Hence, this paper presents a recent progressive review on the fundamentals of magnetorheological materials and numerous applications. Firstly, an introduction to the magnetorheological effect and different types of magnetorheological materials are presented in this review. Then, the individual and coupled effects of sedimentation, temperature, and magnetic field on magnetorheological materials are discussed. Finally, magnetorheological materials-based devices have been extensively reviewed, including actuator, clutch, damper, brake, pump, valve, and robot, thus aiming to provide useful information for facilitating the design of complex electro-mechanical systems.

Abstract:Abstract Magnetorheological (MR) fluid, whose rheological properties can be changed reversibly by applied magnetic field, offers superior capabilities and opportunities since its invention. The most crucial feature of MR fluid is its controllable and continuous yield stress. Taking this advantage, MR fluid is gaining popularity in various medical applications to meet their force/torque requirements. In this review article, progress of medical applications of MR fluid in the last two decades are systematically reviewed, mainly focused on six categories: lower limb prosthesis, exoskeleton, orthosis, rehabilitation device, haptic master, and tactile display. With MR fluid, natural and stable limb motions in lower limb prostheses, exoskeletons, and orthoses, flexible muscle trainings in rehabilitation devices, and high transparency and resolution haptic feedback can be realized. Relevant discussions and future perspectives are also provided.

Abstract:Rheology is an important property of MRF (Magnetorheological fluids) and an important basis for designing a MRF device. For researchers and engineers, therefore, a practical and reliable magnetorheometer is certainly required for the study and application of the MRF and its devices. In this paper, the principle of a novel magnetorheometer was introduced, the structure and the function of major components were explained, the test process for the rheological property of the MRF by using this magnetorheometer was illustrated, the distribution of the electromagnetic field in the gap, where the MRF is filled, was analyzed by means of ANSYS software tools, and experiments were conducted to ascertain the validity of the magnetorheometer.

Abstract:During the last few decades, magnetorheological (MR) elastomers have attracted a significant amount of attention for their enormous potential in engineering applications. Because they are a solid counterpart to MR fluids, MR elastomers exhibit a unique field-dependent material property when exposed to a magnetic field, and they overcome major issues faced in magnetorheological fluids, e.g. the deposition of iron particles, sealing problems and environmental contamination. Such advantages offer great potential for designing intelligent devices to be used in various engineering fields, especially in fields that involve vibration reduction and isolation. This paper presents a state of the art review on the recent progress of MR elastomer technology, with special emphasis on the research and development of MR elastomer devices and their applications. To keep the integrity of the knowledge, this review includes a brief introduction of MR elastomer materials and follows with a discussion of critical issues involved in designing magnetorheological elastomer devices, i.e. operation modes, coil placements and principle fundamentals. A comprehensive review has been presented on the research and development of MR elastomer devices, including vibration absorbers, vibration isolators, base isolators, sensing devices, and so on. A summary of the research on the modeling mechanical behavior for both the material and the devices is presented. Finally, the challenges and the potential facing magnetorheological elastomer technology are discussed, and suggestions have been made based on the authors’ knowledge and experience.

Abstract:Magnetorheological (MR) elastomers become one of the most powerful smart and advanced materials that can be tuned reversibly, finely, and quickly in terms of their mechanical and viscoelastic properties by an input magnetic field. They are composite materials in which magnetizable particles are dispersed in solid base elastomers. Their distinctive behaviors are relying on the type and size of dispersed magnetic particles, the type of elastomer matrix, and the type of non-magnetic fillers such as plasticizer, carbon black, and crosslink agent. With these controllable characteristics, they can be applied to various applications such as vibration absorber, isolator, magnetoresistor, and electromagnetic wave absorption. This review provides a summary of the fabrication, properties, and applications of MR elastomers made of various elastomeric materials.

Abstract:The tunable rheological properties of magnetorheological (MR) materials at high shear rates are studied using a piston-driven flow-mode-type rheometer. The proposed method provides measurement of the apparent viscosity and yield stress of MR fluids for a shear rate range of 50 to 40,000 s−1. The rheological properties of a commercial MR fluid, as well as a newly developed MR polymeric gel, and a ferrofluid-based MR fluid are investigated. The results for apparent viscosity and dynamic and static shear stresses under different applied magnetic fields are reported.

Abstract:Magnetorheological (MR) fluids are smart materials whose properties can be controlled by a magnetic field. They are used in a variety of applications with tailored operating parameters, facilitating broad and relatively straightforward implementation and control of the functional properties of these systems. The aim of the study was to determine the variation in shear stress of MR fluids under varying shear deformation directions and different magnetic field induction levels. The experiments were carried out with the use of three commercially available fluids: MRF-122EG, MRF-132DG, and MRF-140CG, which primarily differ in the volumetric fraction of ferromagnetic particles. These fluids are designed for use in mechanical energy dissipation devices clutches, and brakes are characterized by high stability and a broad controllability range. The experiments were performed using a rotational rheometer with a parallel plate measuring system to examine shear stress variability during both the deformation and rest phases. The study applied relatively large deformations, exceeding the linear viscoelastic range and the deformation corresponding to the yield point. The test results revealed variations in the shear stress values across successive loading cycles, as well as fluctuations during the rest phase. It was also found that, depending on magnetic field induction level (i.e., the level of fluid magnetization), the rest period could result in either a decrease (relaxation) or an increase (hardening) in shear stress values. These findings have practical significance, particularly for MR fluid devices operating in shear mode.

Abstract:Magnetorheological(MR) elastomers are the solid analog of MR fluids,where the oil has been replaced by a rubber or a gel.The obvious advantages from using MR solid materials are that the particles are not able to settle with time and that there is no need to use containers to keep the MR materials in its place.In this paper,the research advances in MR elastomers in recent years at home and abroad are reviewed.It is pointed out that MR elastomer devices have the advantages such as dispensing with sealing,stable performance,easy control and quick response,etc.,and have potential applications in small-amplitude vibration systems,such as shock-absorbing mounts and suspensions.

Abstract:The dependence of the normal stress on the shear rate and magnetic field strength in the shear flow of magnetorheological (MR) fluids has been studied experimentally. An obvious normal stress could be observed when the applied magnetic field was higher than a critical value. The normal stress increases considerably with increase of the shear rate and magnetic field, and decreases suddenly and significantly upon the onset of shear thickening in MR fluids. The ratio of shear stress to normal stress, an analogue of the friction coefficient, increases with increase of the shear rate, but decreases with increase of the applied magnetic field. Along with the shear stress, the normal stress in MR fluids could provide a more comprehensive understanding of the MR effect, and the evolution of the particle structure in shear flow, and may have important implications for preparing high performance magnetostrictive elastomers with high force output along the magnetic field direction.

Abstract:Fluid jet machining has been widely used in machining of hard-brittle materials. However, the diffusion of a jet flow significantly affects the erosion capacity. Magnetorheological (MR) fluid has been considered to take the role of pure water for carrying abrasive particles, due to its better concentration when the external magnetic field is applied. The present investigation focuses on the flow characteristics of a magnetorheological jet, which are involved in the basic aspects of erosion mechanism. 3D numerical models of excitation coil and jet flow field were established to investigate the fluid pressure distribution on the target surface and the trajectories of laden particles. Experiments were also conducted to verify the simulation results and evaluate the feasibility of a MR jet on surface finishing. The results indicated that the utilization of high magnetic intensity can effectively improve the concentration of a jet flow and the processing quality of workpiece surface.

Abstract:Magnetorheological finishing (MRF) is a technique in which a magnetic-field stiffened ribbon of MR fluid is used to polish a workpiece. MR fluids are essentially suspensions of magnetizable particles immersed in a nonmagnetic fluid. These complex fluids show a unique ability to undergo rapid, nearly completely reversible, significant changes in their mechanical and optical properties upon application of an external magnetic field. The aim of this work is essentially to investigate the effect of microstructure and viscosity behavior of magnetorheological suspensions under the external electro-magnetic field. A viscometer equipped with a circular shape electro-magnetic coil around the testing tube is used. The viscosity of the MR fluids is experimentally studied with the change of the magnetic density. The microstructure and behavior of bending chains in MR fluids are observed by applying an electro-magnetic field.

Abstract:Magnetorheological (MR) fluids presents obvious rheological properties under external magnetic fields. A rotational rheometer was adopted to investigate the relationship between shear stress and shear rate of different volume fractions MR fluids under different applied magnetic field strengths, which is one of the most important indicators of rheological property of MR fluids. Shear stress increases with the increasing of applied magnetic field and particles volume concentration. While, MR fluid shows the pseudo-plastic fluid behavior when the volume fraction was 28% without magnetic field. Different constitutive models (i.e. H-B model, S-S model and a modified model used to analyze flowing law of MR fluids) were employed, respectively. Results show that the modified flow model fits well with experimental results as a whole compared to other models, and the modified model is more simple and effective.

Abstract:Magnetorheological fluid (MRF) consisting of the carbonyl iron, silicon oil and oleic acid has been prepared. In the absence of a magnetic field, the present MRF behaved as the non-newtonian fluid and shear thinning. Under the influence of a magnetic field, the apparent viscosity of the MRF increases up to two orders of magnitude and exhibits a yield stress τ y=94.7 Pa. When the shear stress τ>τ y, the rheological properties of MRF satisfy Bingham model.

Abstract:This work studied the rheological properties and magnetorheological (MR) mechanism of dry magnetorheological fluid (MRF) under various working modes. A novel simulation method combining the discrete element method and computational fluid dynamics was developed, in which the bilateral coupling between particles and the flow field of the matrix (air) was considered. The microstructures and mechanical properties in the redispersion process, shear mode, and valve mode were systematically simulated for the first time. The results indicated that dry MRF presented superior redispersion property and response time (several μs) than liquid-based MRFs. In shear mode, the magnetic dipolar force and friction force dominated the evolution of microstructures. In valve mode, the magnetic dipolar force and viscous drag force of air became the main interactions. Magnetic particles aggregated into sturdy chain structures and hindered the airflow. The MR effect in valve mode was the pressure gradient of the matrix, which increased up to 1.08 × 105 Pa m−1 with the increasing particle volume fractions and decreased under a large inflow velocity. The best MR effect in valve mode was achieved under a magnetic field of B = 63 mT. Simulations revealed the influence of dimensionless Mn and Re number on the MR effect. The pressure gradient of the matrix was controlled by the external field and can be utilized to design a dry MRF valve for precious and transient vibration control. Simulated dimensionless shear stress in shear mode agreed well with experiments. This work will promote the development and applications of novel high-performance MRFs.

Abstract:Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs), as smart materials, exhibit notable changes in their mechanical properties in response to an external magnetic field, which makes them ideal candidates for vibration-damping applications across engineering applications. This article delves into the complexities of MRE behavior, discussing in detail the various modeling approaches developed to capture this behavior and the control algorithms designed to exploit MRE properties for real-world applications optimally. These methods include microscopic models that consider the magnetizable particles with potential as magnetic poles, enabling a more in-depth view of localized magnetic interaction. Additionally, continuum-based models are discussed, offering insight into the interplay of local magnetic and mechanical fields within MREs; however, at the macroscopic scale, models that capture the dynamic behavior of MREs are reviewed. Macroscopic models are critical for designing control strategies in MRE-based systems, as they can represent how the material responds under varying magnetic fields and mechanical loads. The paper also introduces the reader to non-parametric models, primarily machine learning approaches. These data-driven methods provide an alternative for understanding and predicting MRE behavior without the necessity for explicit mathematical models. A significant part of the review addresses the difficulties encountered in control design due to the inherent non-linearity of MRE-based systems. These challenges often stem from the complex magnetic-mechanical coupling and hysteresis inherent in MREs, which render traditional linear control techniques ineffective. The article reviews conventional methods while suggesting alternative strategies for real-time adaptability, a critical requirement in applications like adaptive vibration control.

Abstract:Rheology of a suspension is mainly determined by particle interactions and the host fluid rheology. By scaling rheological properties of different magnetorheological (MR) suspensions prepared with Newtonian and non-Newtonian (including shear thickening and shear thinning) host fluids, the competition between the particle interaction and the host fluid rheology could be clearly revealed. A simple normalizing method by considering the ratio of the magnetic force to viscous force experienced by particles is introduced. The shear stress curves of the three kinds of MR suspensions could be well scaled into the same master curve. The magnetic force maintains the particles structures under magnetic fields, while the viscous force is a destructive factor to the particle structures. Therefore, the magnetic force dominates the rheology of MR suspensions at low shear rates with small viscous force. While as the increase of shear rate to a very high value, particle chain structures under external magnetic fields might get similar to that under zero magnetic field because of the dominant role of the viscous force. This work clearly demonstrates the competition between the particle interaction and the viscous force experienced by particles, which finally dominates the particle structure inside of the MR suspension and its rheological behavior.

Abstract:Magnetorheological fluids are intelligent materials that can be used in many technical fields because of their rheological properties.Magnetorheological fluids can be used in the critical speed passing technique for rotor-bearing systems which is important in centrifuge development.To explore a new method of critical speed passing technique of centrifuge,the magnetorheological fluid is used in the centrifuge lower damper.Theoretical and experimental studies of the vibration characteristics of a centrifuge rotor with a magnetorheological fluid damper show that the centrifuge rotor-bearing system can smoothly pass through the second-order critical speed without resonance by adjusting the magnetic field intensity in the magnetorheological fluid damper.The magnetorheological fluid damper is,therefore,more efficient than traditional centrifuge dampers for vibration control.
