Abstract:A series of non-symmetric liquid crystal compounds consisting of two different semi-rigid anisometric cores, namely 1,3,4-oxidiazole and biphenyl units, and two short terminal groups, have been synthesised in good yield. It has been shown by polarising optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry that all these compounds display liquid crystalline behaviour, with nematic and/or smectic A mesophases. The nature of the mesophases is dependent on the electronic properties of the terminal groups. In methylene chloride solution all the compounds displayed a room temperature emission with max at 358-396 nm and quantum yields of 0.29-0.56. The effect of the terminal groups on the mesomorphic and photoluminescent properties is briefly discussed in the context of their electronic characteristics.

Abstract:Four symmetrical diphenylnate liquid crystals were prepared and their structures were confirmed by FT-IR and H-1 NMR spectra. Their liquid crystal properties were tested by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and hot stage polarizing microscop (POM). The crystal structure of Ilia was detemfined by X-ray single crystal diffraction techniques. IIIa is a monoclinic crystal system, space group P2(1)/c with the unit cell parameters: a=18.525(3) angstrom, b=12.196(2) angstrom, c= 12.195(2) angstrom, beta= 97.142(2)degrees, V=2733.7(9) angstrom(3), Z=4, D-c=1.163 Mg/m(3), R=0.0521, R-w=0.1161. The results showed that molecules lead thermotropic liquid crystals properties. The relations among the mesomorphism, oxygen atoms, terminal unsaturated bond, the flexible chain length were investigated.

Abstract:Hydrazide-based non-symmetric liquid crystal dimers were synthesized. The liquid crystalline properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). These non-symmetric liquid crystal dimers are evidenced to display the monolayer smectic C phase. The effects of the lateral intermolecular hydrogen bonding as well as the length of the terminal alkyl chains and the spacers on the mesophase are discussed. Our studies reveal that intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the hydrazide groups and microsegregation effect is the driving force for the formation of the monolayer smectic C structure. Abstract:A new class of thiophene-based 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives ( n -OXD-R) and the corresponding 1,3,4-thiadiazole derivatives ( n -THD-R) was synthesised and characterised by means of 1H NMR, 13C NMR, MS and HRMS techniques. Liquid crystal properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarising optical microscopy and variable temperature X-ray diffraction measurements. All the 1,3,4-thiadiazole compounds ( n -THD-R) exhibited enantiotropic mesophases (smectic A, smectic C and nematic phases) with wide mesomorphic temperature ranges (68.5-109.5C). In contrast, only the oxadiazole compounds 8-OXD-Cl, 9-OXD-Cl and 10-OXD-Cl, bearing electron-withdrawing terminal group and longer alkoxy chain, displayed an enantiotropic smectic A phase with narrow mesomorphic temperature ranges (4.1-10.9C). The effects of central heterocyclic rings, the terminal groups and the length of the terminal alkoxy on the mesomorphic behaviour are discussed.

Abstract:A series of new compounds based on aromatically 2,5-disubstituted 1,3,4-oxadiazoles without flexible chains, formulated as p-R-C6H4-(OC2N2)-(p-C6H4)2-R' with (i) R=CH3O, R'=CH3O, CH3S, F, H (Ia-Id), (ii) R=CH3S, R'=CH3O, CH3S, F, H (IIa-IId) and (iii) R=F, R'=CH3O, CH3S, F, H (IIIa-IIId) (p-C6H4 and OC2N2 represent a p-phenylene spacer and a 1,3,4-oxadiazole ring, respectively), were synthesised and characterised by 1H and 13C NMR, MS and HRMS techniques. Mesomorphic properties were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy. All of the target compounds (except Id, IId, IIIc and IIId) exhibited an enantiotropic nematic mesophase with high melting temperatures. The liquid crystalline properties of these compounds were influenced greatly by polarity, steric factors and positions of the terminal groups. The effect of the terminal groups on the liquid crystal properties is discussed.

Abstract:Two series of symmetrical azine-type liquid crystals were synthesised and their chemical structures identified by FTIR, H-1 NMR and elemental analysis. Their mesomorphic properties were investigated by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. The characteristic of these liquid crystals is that they have a high clearing point ( most were higher than 320 degrees C) and a broad thermal range in the mesophase. The end groups of the liquid crystals had an effect on their mesomorphic properties. The series with alkoxy end groups all exhibited both smectic A (SmA) and a nematic phase, whereas the series with alkyl end groups showed only nematic phase at their lower analogues and showed both SmA and nematic properties at their higher analogues.

Abstract:The synthesis and mesomorphic properties of new triazole liquid-crystalline are presented and discussed. These triazole derivatives have been synthesized by reacting 4-hydrazoic iodobenzene with the 4-alkyl phenyl acetylene in dimethyl formamide (DMF). The molecular structure is characterized by 1H NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS) and the mesomorphic properties are characterized by polarizing optical microscope (POM) and (DSC). These new triazole liquid-crystallines have higher melting point and clearing point and the final compounds display both nematic and smectic liquid-crystalline phases.

Abstract:A new series of liquid crystal (LC) monomers - not only contain a double bond but also contain an azo group - were designed and synthesised. The length of side groups in the LC monomers containing azobenzene ester varied from 1 to 2 methylene units, and the length of the substituted groups in the main chain varied from 1 to 3 methylene units. The molecular structures of the intermediates and target compounds were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared, ultraviolet and visible spectrum and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The thermal phase behaviour of the LC monomers was investigated by polar optical microscopy coupled with hot stage and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In this paper, the effect on the LC zone with the substituents were investigated, and with the increased methylene of main chain, the melting point and the phase transition temperature of the substance will be lowered and LC regions will be narrower.

Abstract:Liquid crystals based on substituted 2,5‐diaryl‐1,3,4‐thiadiazole derivatives (1a–1f, 3a and 3b) and 1,3,4‐oxadiazole analogues (2a–2f, 4a and 4b) were synthesised and characterised by 1H, 13C nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared, mass spectrometry, high‐resolution mass spectrometry techniques and elemental analyses. The X‐ray crystal structure of 1e revealed that it contains tilted lamellar arrangement of molecules in the crystalline solid. The liquid crystal properties have been investigated by polarised‐light optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and in‐situ variable‐temperature X‐ray diffraction. All compounds (except 2e and 2f) exhibited thermotropic liquid crystal behaviours with various mesophases (smectic A and C, nematic N or soft crystal E phases). Notably, the 1,3,4‐thiadiazole derivatives consistently have wider mesomorphic temperature ranges than those of the respective 1,3,4‐oxadiazole analogues. The solutions of all compounds in CH2Cl2 individually displayed one or two absorption bands with λ max values at 297–355 nm and emitted with λ max values at 363–545 nm and quantum yields of 0.12–0.73. Structure–property relationships of these compounds are discussed in the contexts of their molecular structures and weak intermolecular interactions.

Abstract:Three series of novel chiral liquid crystals containing biphenyl moiety with two chiral centres (diastereomer) were synthesized and characterized. The structures and thermal phase behaviour of target compounds were characterized using H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectroscopy, elemental analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, and X-ray diffraction measurements. All the compounds exhibit enantiotropic mesomorphic behavior. In this case, the chiral liquid crystalline molecules bearing the shorter length of alkyl chain (m = 3 and 4) show a mesomorphic dimorphism SmA*-N* and the analogous compounds bearing the longer length of alkyl chain (m = 5 and 6) exhibit only one SmA* mesophase. Furthermore, the potential of SmA* mesophase for electro-optics applications exploiting the electroclinic effect was explored. The electro-optical properties of the SmA* phase, such as voltage-transmittance effect, electroclinic effect, and electro-optical response were also measured. As a consequence, the correlation between their electro-optical properties and chemical structures of these compounds were investigated.

Abstract:Six series of laterally fluorinated liquid crystals containing 1,3,2-dioxaborinane and cyclohexyl units have been synthesized and characterized. Their mesomorphic properties were characterized by polarizing optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. All these compounds are thermotropic liquid crystalline materials. All three-ring compounds (series A , B and C ) and most four-ring compounds (series D , E and F ) exhibit only a nematic phase, while some four-ring compounds with long terminal alkyl chains show nematic, smectic A and even smectic B phases. In addition, four compounds containing a 1,3-dioxane unit were prepared, and their mesomorphic properties compared with their 1,3,2-dioxaborinane analogues. The dielectric anisotropies of selected target compounds were determined; some showed a negative anisotropy. The relationships between the properties and chemical structures of these new compounds are discussed.

Abstract:ABSTRACT In order to obtain liquid crystals with high birefringence (Δn), four azobenzene compounds based on lateral fluorinated bistolane moieties with trifluoromethyl terminal groups were synthesized with Hagihara–Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction. The molecular structures of the compounds were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared, 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance. The transition temperatures, optical textures, and optical anisotropies were determined by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy. The effect of the alkyl substituents on liquid crystal behavior is discussed in detail. The compounds have showed higher birefringence values.

Abstract:Symmetrical bi‐1,3,4‐oxadiazole derivatives, namely 5,5′‐bis(phenyl 4‐alkoxybenzoate)‐2,2′‐bi‐1,3,4‐oxadiazole (BBOXD‐n, n = 6, 10, 14, 16), were synthesised. All BBOXD‐n exhibited remarkably stable SmC phases by virtue of the high transition enthalpies of SmC–I. In addition, BBOXD‐6 and BBOXD‐10 showed an enantiotropic nemetic phase with enthalpies of the N–I transition up to 5.16 kJ mol−1. As confirmed by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction analysis and MM2, molecules of BBOXD‐n showed high‐angle tilting (55–57°) within their smectic C phases.

Abstract:Two series were synthesized containing a 5H-thiazolo[3,4-b][1, 3, 4]thiadiazole unit with a Schiff base and an azo linkage. Polarized optical microscope (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to examine the mesomorphic behavior. Enantiotropic nematic phases were present in compounds with alkoxy terminal groups of n = 1–4 methylene units for both series. While enantiotropic smectic A (SmA) is also present in molecules with n = 6–8 carbon atoms in addition to nematic phases for a series of azo linkage. The molecules in the Schiff base linkage series with n = 6–8 exhibited pure smectogenic liquid crystalline behavior.

Abstract:The novel columnar liquid crystals based on symmetric hairpin-shaped cholesterol tetramers bridged by rigid or hydrogen-bonding Schiff-base spacers were prepared by reacting cholesterol dimer with phenylenediamines or dihydrazides in yields of 70-85%. Structural characterisation of these new compounds had been achieved by infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry. Their mesomorphic properties were investigated by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. They exhibited good hexagonal columnar mesophase with three molecules in a disc of the columnar hexagonal state. This study implied that the symmetric cholesterol tetramers with rigid cores or hydrogen-bonding cores prefer to columnar mesophase. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:A series of liquid-crystalline copolymers poly{6-[4-(4-hexyloxy benzoyloxy)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate}-co-{6-[4-(S-2-methyl-1-butyloxycarbonylphenylazo)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate} with an azobenzene moiety as photoreactive mesogenic unit were prepared. Their liquid crystalline properties and photoinduced anisotropy were investigated. The results showed that these polymers exhibited layered smectic phases and showed good photoinduced anisotropy both in the glass states and in the mesophase states.

Abstract:Liquid crystals with 1,3,4-oxadiazole units in the aromatic core have attracted considerable attention due to their rich mesophases, high photoluminescence quantum yields, good electron transporting ability and excellent thermal stabilities. In this feature article, 1,3,4-oxadiazole-based liquid crystals are classified into three categories according to their different molecular shapes and molecular weight: calamitic and discotic monomers, symmetric and non-symmetric dimers, and polymers including main-chain, side-chain and mesogen-jacketed types. The structure-property relationships of this kind of liquid crystal are discussed in-depth, with an emphasis on strategies to devise columnar and biaxial nematic mesophases with a low temperature range.

Abstract:A series of 2,5-diphenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazoles and 1,3,4-thiadiazole analogs, abbreviated as [p-CnH2n+1OC6H4 (XC2N2)-p-C6H4-R]: (i) X = O, n = 7, 4 and R = CH3O, CN, NO2 (1a-1f) and (ii) X = S, n = 7, 4 and R = CH3O, CN, NO2 (2a-2f) (where p-C6H4 and XC2N2 represents a p-phenylene spacer and a heterocyclic ring containing a C-X-C moiety, respectively), were synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR, MS and elemental analysis. The X-ray crystal structures of 1e, 2c, and 2f revealed that these compounds individually formed lamellar arrangements in the crystalline solids. The thermotropic liquid crystal behaviors were determined using polarized optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Among the oxadiazoles 1a-1f, only 1b displayed an enantiotropic smectic A phase, the others exhibited no liquid crystal properties. All the thiadiazoles 2a-2f exhibited various calamitic mesophases with wide mesomorphic temperature ranges. The relationship between the structure and mesomorphic properties was discussed in context of the geometrical configuration of heterocyclic rings, the polarity of terminal groups, and the length of the alkoxy chain.

Abstract:The reactions of different α,ω-dibromo alkanes with (E)-4-(naphthalen-2-yldiazenyl)phenol and (E)-4-(naphthalen-2-ylimino)methyl)phenol, respectively, led to the synthesis of two new homologous series of liquid crystalline symmetrical dimers with azobenzene or azomethine central linkage and containing the naphthalene moiety as a rigid core. Spectroscopic techniques like FT-IR, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR and elemental analysis confirmed their structure. These dimers exhibited mesomorphic phases, studied through POM and DSC. Their photophysical behaviour was explored using UV–visible spectroscopy. Remarkably, dimers with even spacer units ( n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12) displayed excellent liquid crystalline properties as nematic phases, with extended mesophase lengths and thermal stability for both series. The study revealed the vital role of spacer length in determining liquid crystalline behaviour. The computational studies employed the B3LYP method and electron density method for optimization.

Abstract:A series of liquid crystalline polymers with T-shaped two-dimensional mesogenic units were synthesized via low temperature solution polycondensation of 2-(4'-alkoxy-phenyl) hydroquinone with various diacyl dichlorides. The polymers were found to be nematic and shown thermotropic liquid crystalline behaviors through observations using DSC, polarized microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The melting temperature T-m and the isotropization temperature T-i of the polymers change regularly with varying of the monomer structures.
