Abstract:The utilization of fossil fuels has enabled an unprecedented era of prosperity and advancement of well-being for human society. However, the associated increase in anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions can negatively affect global temperatures and ocean acidity. Moreover, fossil fuels are a limited resource and their depletion will ultimately force one to seek alternative carbon sources to maintain a sustainable economy. Converting CO2 into value-added chemicals and fuels, using renewable energy, is one of the promising approaches in this regard. Major advances in energy-efficient CO2 conversion can potentially alleviate CO2 emissions, reduce the dependence on nonrenewable resources, and minimize the environmental impacts from the portions of fossil fuels displaced. Methanol (CH3OH) is an important chemical feedstock and can be used as a fuel for internal combustion engines and fuel cells, as well as a platform molecule for the production of chemicals and fuels. As one of the promising approaches, thermocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation to CH3OH via heterogeneous catalysis has attracted great attention in the past decades. Major progress has been made in the development of various catalysts including metals, metal oxides, and intermetallic compounds. In addition, efforts are also put forth to define catalyst structures in nanoscale by taking advantage of nanostructured materials, which enables the tuning of the catalyst composition and modulation of surface structures and potentially endows more promising catalytic performance in comparison to the bulk materials prepared by traditional methods. Despite these achievements, significant challenges still exist in developing robust catalysts with good catalytic performance and long-term stability. In this review, we will provide a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in this area, especially focusing on structure–activity relationship, as well as the importance of combining catalytic measurements, in situ characterization, and theoretical studies in understanding reaction mechanisms and identifying key descriptors for designing improved catalysts.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2), a key greenhouse gas produced from both anthropogenic and natural sources, has been recently considered to be an important C1 building-block for the synthesis of many industrial fuels and chemicals. Catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 using a homogeneous system is regarded as an efficient process for CO2 valorization. This approach leads to the direct products including formic acid (HCOOH), carbon monoxide (CO), methanol (MeOH), and methane (CH4). The hydrogenation of CO2 to CO followed by alkene carbonylation provides value-added compounds, which also avoids the tedious separation and transportation of toxic CO. Moreover, the reduction of CO2 with H2 in the presence of amines is of significance to attain fine chemicals through catalytic formylation and methylation reactions. The synthesis of higher alcohols and dialkoxymethane from CO2 and H2 has been demonstrated recently, which opens access to new molecular structures using CO2 as an important C1 source.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of CO 2 into chemicals and fuels is a viable method to reduce carbon emissions and achieve carbon neutrality. Through thermal catalysis, electrocatalysis, and photo(electro)catalysis, CO 2 can be converted into a wide range of valuable products, including CO, formic acid, methanol, methane, ethanol, acetic acid, propanol, light olefins, aromatics, and gasoline, as well as fine chemicals. In this mini-review, we summarize the recent progress in heterogeneous catalysis for CO 2 conversion into chemicals and fuels and highlight some representative studies of different conversion routes. The structure–performance correlations of typical catalytic materials used for the CO 2 conversion reactions have been revealed by combining advanced in situ/operando spectroscopy and microscopy characterizations and density functional theory calculations. Abstract:Reducing CO2 emissions is an urgent global priority. In this context, several mitigation strategies, including CO2 tax and stringent legislation, have been adopted to halt the deterioration of the natural environment. Also, carbon recycling procedures undoubtedly help reduce net emissions into the atmosphere, enhancing sustainability. Utilizing Earth's abundant CO2 for the production of high‐value chemicals and fuels opens new avenues for the chemical industry. In this context, much effort has been devoted to converting CO2 as a feedstock into various value‐added chemicals, such as CH4, lower olefins, methanol, gasoline, and long‐chain hydrocarbons, for numerous applications involving various catalytic reactions. Although several CO2‐conversion methods have been used, including electrochemical, photochemical, and biological approaches, the hydrogenation method allows the reaction to be tuned to produce the targeted compound without significantly altering infrastructure. This review discusses the numerous hydrogenation routes and their challenges, such as catalyst design, operation, and the combined art of structure–activity relationships for the various product formations.

Abstract:The hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to produce chemicals and transportation liquid fuels in huge demand via heterogeneous thermochemical catalysis achieved using renewable energy has received increasing attention, and substantial advances have been made in this research field in recent years. In this study, we summarize our progress in the rational design and construction of highly efficient catalysts for CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol, lower olefins, aromatics, and gasoline- and jet fuel-range hydrocarbons. The structure-performance relationship, nature of the active sites, and mechanism of the reactions occurring over these catalysts are explored by combining computational and experimental evidence. The results of this study will promote further fundamental studies and industrial applications of heterogeneous catalysts for CO 2 hydrogenation to produce bulk chemicals and liquid fuels. Abstract:This short review provides an in-depth analysis of the achievements and further developments of the catalytic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO2) to methanol from those that are worth learning about based on the transformation of syngas into methanol. We begin by exploring the environmental and energy-related implications of utilizing CO2 as a feedstock for methanol production by emphasizing its potential to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and facilitate renewable energy integration. Then, different catalytic formulations focusing on precious metals, copper-based catalysts, and metal oxides are summarized, and insights into their advantages and limitations in the aspects of catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability are discussed. Precious metal catalysts, such as platinum and iridium, exhibit high activity but are cost-prohibitive, while copper-based catalysts present a promising and cost-effective alternative. Metal oxides are considered for their unique properties in CO2 activation. Mechanistic insights into reaction pathways are explored, with a particular emphasis on copper-based catalysts. Moreover, the complex steps involved in CO2 hydrogenation to methanol are discussed to shed light on the key intermediates and active sites responsible for catalysis, which is crucial for catalyst design and optimization. Finally, we stress the importance of ongoing research and development efforts to enhance catalyst efficiency, mechanistic comprehension, and process optimization. This review serves as a valuable resource for researchers, engineers, and policymakers working toward a more sustainable and carbon-neutral energy future. By harnessing CO2 as a carbon feedstock for methanol synthesis, we have the potential to address environmental concerns and advance the utilization of renewable energy sources, further contributing to the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy landscape.

Abstract:The utilization of carbon dioxide is critical to realize the objective of "carbon peak and neutrality". Among various carbon dioxide exploitation approaches, catalytic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide is a significant method to selectively convert the CO2 into methanol and other valuable chemicals. Among these products, methanol is a crucial chemical feedstock that can be utilized as a platform molecule for the synthesis of chemicals and fuels as well as a fuel for internal combustion engines and fuel cells, causing particular interest. Nowadays, Catalytic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide into methanol has shifted its focus on the creation of low-cost, environmentally friendly, and efficient catalysts. Abstract:The production of chemicals and fuels via chemical reduction of CO2 by green H-2 represents a promising means of mitigating CO2 emissions. The heterogeneous catalytic reaction of CO2 and H-2 under atmospheric pressure primarily produces CO and CH4, while CH3OH and C2+ hydrocarbons are obtained at high pressure. Improving the catalytic selectivity improves the energy efficiency for a given yield and greatly reduces the downstream separation costs. In this work, we review the recent progress in tuning the selectivity of CO2 hydrogenation over heterogeneous catalysts at atmospheric pressure. We describe fundamental insights into the relationships among the electronic properties of active metals, the binding strengths of key intermediates, and the CO2 hydrogenation selectivity. The manipulation of the electronic properties, and consequently the product selectivity, can be achieved mainly by controlling the particle size, bimetallic effects, and strong metal-support interactions. Finally, we discuss challenges and opportunities for the rational design of CO2 hydrogenation catalysts with high activity and desired selectivity.

Abstract:The review is devoted to generalization and comparative analysis of recent literature data on the conversion of carbon dioxide to methanol, dimethyl ether and hydrocarbons С2+, including olefins, by catalytic hydrogenation. The main ways for achieving high activity and selectivity of such processes were shown to be the deliberate design of catalysts and the selection of conditions for hydrogenation processes, particularly with the use of supercritical CO2 and alternative physicochemical methods of CO2 activation (electrocatalysis and photocatalysis).

Abstract:Catalytic CO2 conversion to methanol is a promising way to extenuate the adverse effects of CO2 emission, global warming and energy shortage. Understanding the fundamental features of CO2 activation and hydrogenation at the molecular level is essential for carbon utilization and sustainable chemical production in the current climate crisis. This review explores the recent advances in understanding the design of catalysts with desired active sites, including single‐atom, dual‐atom, interface, defects/vacancies and promoters/dopants. We focused on the design of various catalytic systems to enhance their catalytic performances by stabilizing active metal in a catalyst, identifying the unique structure of active species, and engineering coordination environments of active sites. Mechanistic insights provided by advanced operando and in situ spectroscopies were also discussed. Moreover, the review highlights the key factors affecting active sites and reaction mechanisms, such as local environments, oxidation states, and metal‐support interactions. By integrating recent advancements and relating knowledge gaps this review aims to endow an inclusive overview of the field and guide future research toward more efficient and selective catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol.

Abstract:Under specific scenarios, the catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 with renewable hydrogen is considered a suitable route for the chemical recycling of this environmentally harmful and chemically refractory molecule into added-value energy carriers and chemicals. The hydrogenation of CO2 into C1 products, such as methane and methanol, can be achieved with high selectivities towards the corresponding hydrogenation product. More challenging, however, is the selective production of high (C2+ ) hydrocarbons and oxygenates. These products are desired as energy vectors, owing to their higher volumetric energy density and compatibility with the current fuel infrastructure than C1 compounds, and as entry platform chemicals for existing value chains. The major challenge is the optimal integration of catalytic functionalities for both reductive and chain-growth steps. This Minireview summarizes the progress achieved towards the hydrogenation of CO2 to C2+ hydrocarbons and oxygenates, covering both solid and molecular catalysts and processes in the gas and liquid phases. Mechanistic aspects are discussed with emphasis on intrinsic kinetic limitations, in some cases inevitably linked to thermodynamic bounds through the concomitant reverse water-gas-shift reaction, which should be considered in the development of advanced catalysts and processes.

Abstract:The increasing environmental concerns due to anthropogenic CO2 emissions have called for an alternate sustainable source to fulfill rising chemical and energy demands and reduce environmental problems. The thermo-catalytic activation and conversion of abundantly available CO2, a thermodynamically stable and kinetically inert molecule, can significantly pave the way to sustainably produce chemicals and fuels and mitigate the additional CO2 load. This can be done through comprehensive knowledge and understanding of catalyst behavior, reaction kinetics, and reactor design. This review aims to catalog and summarize the advances in the experimental and theoretical approaches for CO2 activation and conversion to C1 products via heterogeneous catalytic routes. To this aim, we analyze the current literature works describing experimental analyses (e.g., catalyst characterization and kinetics measurement) as well as computational studies (e.g., microkinetic modeling and first-principles calculations). The catalytic reactions of CO2 activation and conversion reviewed in detail are: (i) reverse water-gas shift (RWGS), (ii) CO2 methanation, (iii) CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, and (iv) dry reforming of methane (DRM). This review is divided into six sections. The first section provides an overview of the energy and environmental problems of our society, in which promising strategies and possible pathways to utilize anthropogenic CO2 are highlighted. In the second section, the discussion follows with the description of materials and mechanisms of the available thermo-catalytic processes for CO2 utilization. In the third section, the process of catalyst deactivation by coking is presented, and possible solutions to the problem are recommended based on experimental and theoretical literature works. In the fourth section, kinetic models are reviewed. In the fifth section, reaction technologies associated with the conversion of CO2 are described, and, finally, in the sixth section, concluding remarks and future directions are provided.

Abstract:Processes for the conversion of CO2 to valuable chemicals are highly desired as a result of the increasing CO2 levels in the atmosphere and the subsequent elevating global temperature. However, CO2 is thermodynamically and kinetically inert to transformation and, therefore, many efforts were made in the last few decades. Reformation/hydrogenation of CO2 is widely used as a means to access valuable products such as acetic acids, CH4, CH3OH, and CO. The electrochemical reduction of CO2 using hetero- and homogeneous catalysts recently attracted much attention. In particular, molecular CO2 reduction catalysts were widely studied using transition-metal complexes modified with various ligands to understand the relationship between various catalytic properties and the coordination spheres above the metal centers. Concurrently, the coupling of CO2 with various electrophiles under homogeneous conditions is also considered an important approach for recycling CO2 as a renewable C-1 substrate in the chemical industry. Abstract:Catalytic CO2 conversion to clean fuels and chemicals using hydrogen produced from water with renewable energy is important for mitigating the climate change and reducing the dependence on fossil energy resources. This review summarizes recent advances in CO2 hydrogenation to alcohols and hydrocarbons via heterogeneous catalysis based on the publications in the past decade focusing on metal-based catalysts and also including oxide- and zeolite-based catalysts. Generally, adsorption and activation are more difficult for CO2 than for CO in catalytic hydrogenation over metal catalysts. CO2 conversion to alcohols and hydrocarbons are two major routes that have been explored the most, and the path to a given type of products depends on whether the first hydrogen atom is added to carbon or oxygen of CO2 on surface and the subsequent transformation under the given reaction conditions. Significant advances have been made in both experimental and computational studies on metal-based catalysts. Effective catalysts and processes are required to minimize CO and CH4 and to selectively foster CO2 conversion to alcohols at lower temperatures, particularly to higher alcohols with much less thermodynamic restraint. While Cu-based catalysts have been widely studied, some new bimetallic catalysts such as Pd-Cu and Pd-Zn and oxide-based catalysts such as In2O3 offer promise with higher selectivity toward methanol. Rh-based bimetallic catalysts show selectivity to ethanol and higher alcohols. While new catalysts for CO2 methanation such as Co/ZrO2 has been developed, more progress has been achieved in developing catalysts for synthesis of C2+ higher hydrocarbons from CO2 in a single stage, which is in sharp contrast to the previous approach to hydrogenate CO2 to CO in the first stage followed by conversion of CO in the second stage. New bimetallic catalysts and mixed oxides have been found to be effective for more selective synthesis of C2-C4 olefins, C5+ liquid hydrocarbons and aromatics. Significant progress has been achieved in synthesizing C2+ and C5+ higher hydrocarbons with very little CH4 in one-stage using hybrid catalysts such as In2O3 or Fe3O4 plus ZSM-5 type zeolite. This review highlights the progress in clarifying the key factors such as types of metals, supports and catalyst formulations affecting the activity and selectivity of CO2 conversion, and in understanding of reaction pathways as well as catalyst composition-structure-activity relationship. The field of CO2 hydrogenation still requires significant advance in developing fundamental understanding of catalytically active phase, active sites and reaction mechanisms for CO2 activation and C-C coupling for synthesis of higher alcohols and higher hydrocarbons, as well as efforts in innovative catalytic processes for energy-efficient CO2 conversion and utilization.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the iconic greenhouse gas and the major factor driving present global climate change, incentivizing its capture and recycling into valuable products and fuels. The 6H+/6e− reduction of CO2 affords CH3OH, a key compound that is a fuel and a platform molecule. In this Review, we compare different routes for CO2 reduction to CH3OH, namely, heterogeneous and homogeneous catalytic hydrogenation, as well as enzymatic catalysis, photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. We describe the leading catalysts and the conditions under which they operate, and then consider their advantages and drawbacks in terms of selectivity, productivity, stability, operating conditions, cost and technical readiness. At present, heterogeneous hydrogenation catalysis and electrocatalysis have the greatest promise for large-scale CO2 reduction to CH3OH. The availability and price of sustainable electricity appear to be essential prerequisites for efficient CH3OH synthesis.

Abstract:The catalytic conversion of CO2 to value-added chemicals and fuels has been long regarded as a promising approach to the mitigation of CO2 emissions if green hydrogen is used. Light olefins, particularly ethylene and propylene, as building blocks for polymers and plastics, are currently produced primarily from CO2-generating fossil resources. The identification of highly efficient catalysts with selective pathways for light olefin production from CO2 is a high-reward goal, but it has serious technical challenges, such as low selectivity and catalyst deactivation. In this review, we first provide a brief summary of the two dominant reaction pathways (CO2-Fischer-Tropsch and MeOH-mediated pathways), mechanistic insights, and catalytic materials for CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins. Then, we list the main deactivation mechanisms caused by carbon deposition, water formation, phase transformation and metal sintering/agglomeration. Finally, we detail the recent progress on catalyst development for enhanced olefin yields and catalyst stability by the following catalyst functionalities: (1) the promoter effect, (2) the support effect, (3) the bifunctional composite catalyst effect, and (4) the structure effect. The main focus of this review is to provide a useful resource for researchers to correlate catalyst deactivation and the recent research effort on catalyst development for enhanced olefin yields and catalyst stability.
