Abstract:To ensure deeper market penetration, electrolytes of redox flow batteries (RFB) should be based on low-cost and abundant materials. An all-organic system based on acidic aqueous electrolytes is developed, from a study of theoretical calculations, fundamental chemistry to full-cell testing. The selection of organic active materials in relation to their physical and chemical properties (reaction kinetics, electrode potentials and solubilities) is facilitated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Based upon the results, this paper proposes 1,3-cyclohexanedione (1,3-dione) and 1,2-benzoquinone-4,5-disulfonic acid (1,2-BQDS), which are highly soluble and exhibit the most negative (similar to 0.2 V vs. Standard Hydrogen Electrode (SHE)) and the most positive (similar to 0.80 V vs. Standard Hydrogen Electrode (SHE)) electrode potentials, respectively, under acidic conditions, for which the formation of short-lived and unstable radicals is avoided. The proposed molecules involve at least two proton-two-electron-transfers (pH <= 2.5) and yields one of the highest cell voltage (ca. 0.9 V) and reasonable energy efficiencies (>70% at 20 mA cm(-2)) in acidic electrolytes reported to date.

Abstract:Due to the rapid growth in power generation from intermittent sources, the requirement for low-cost and flexible energy storage systems has given rise to many opportunities [1, 2]. Electrochemical redox flow batteries (RFBs) have emerged as a promising and practical technology for storing energy at large scales [3, 4]. Their scales range from kW to multiples of MW, making them suitable for load levelling, power quality control, coupling with renewable energies and uninterrupted power supply [3]. This can be attributed to their design flexibility, allowing for them to be readily scaled up in power and energy output [5]. This chapter provides a concise overview of RFB systems, covering the fundamental theory behind their operation, their historical development, components and materials, applications and latest developments.

Abstract:Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are gaining significant attention due to the growing demand for sustainable energy storage solutions. In contrast to conventional aqueous vanadium RFBs, which have a restricted voltage range resulting from the use of water and vanadium, the utilization of redox-active organic molecules (ROMs) as active materials broadens the range of applicable liquid media to include non-aqueous electrolyte solutions. The extended voltage range of non-aqueous media, exceeding 2 V, facilitates the establishment of high-energy storage systems. Additionally, considering the higher cost of non-aqueous solvents compared to water, the objective in developing non-aqueous electrolyte solution-based organic RFBs (NRFBs) is to efficiently install these systems in a compact manner and explore unique applications distinct from those associated with aqueous RFBs, which are typically deployed for grid-scale energy storage systems. This review presents recent research progress in ROMs, electrolytes, and membranes in NRFBs. Furthermore, we address the prevailing challenges that require revolution, encompassing a narrow cell voltage range, insufficient solubility, chemical instability, and the crossover of ROMs. Through this exploration, the review contributes to the understanding of the current landscape and potential advancements in NRFB technology and encourages researchers and professionals in the energy field to explore this emerging technology as a potential solution to global environmental challenges.

Abstract:Nonaqueous redox flow batteries (RFBs) are a promising energy storage technology that enables increased cell voltage and high energy capacity compared to aqueous RFBs. Herein, we first report a novel approach to substantially increase the energy density based on the miscible liquid redox materials 2,5-di-tert-butyl-1-methoxy-4-[2'-methoxyethoxy]benzene catholyte and 2-methylbenzophenone anolyte. This system has a high theoretical cell voltage of 2.97 V and a calculated energy density of 223 Wh L-1 that is much higher than those of previously reported nonaqueous organic RFBs. Our reported redox flow chemistry displays excellent electrochemical performance and stability under cyclic voltammetry, bulk electrolysis, and flow cell conditions. A proof-of-principle RFB delivers a coulombic efficiency of 95% and energy efficiency of 70% and represents significant progress toward high energy density RFBs.

Abstract:Extensively investigated since 1970s, the rigorous research on redox flow batteries (RFBs) has recently gained momentum, making them emerging as one of the most prospective energy storage systems. Among RFBs, even the most-developed vanadium redox flow battery is still not widely popularized mainly due to the unsatisfactory properties of redox species such as low solubility and relatively high scarcity of vanadium. Organic redox species and their derivatives have been proposed as alternatives to the metal-based redox species because of their tunable properties, abundant and sustainable materials. This review aims to present state-of-the-art research and provide as an up-to-date guide for the future development of organic RFBs (ORFBs). We summarize the significance of structural composition and configuration of organic species in determining their electrochemical performances in various ORFB chemistries. An exclusive emphasis has been placed upon the influence of elemental composition on tuning the properties of the organic species in terms of solubility, redox potential, and stability, with equal consideration to the practical aspects of low cost and high performance for the development of next generation ORFBs. Aqueous ORFBs with redox molecules including anthraquinone, ferrocene, alloxazine, active polymers, phenazine, TEMPO, viologen, phenothiazine, azobenzene, fluorenone and their derivatives have been exclusively discussed, followed by the phenothiazine and nitronyl nitroxide radical-based non-aqueous ORFBs. Lastly, the current challenges and future directions toward the practicality of ORFBs are richly proposed.

Abstract:Due to decoupled energy and power, the aqueous organic redox flow battery (AORFB) represents a promising energy storage technology that stores energy in redox‐active organic compounds dissolved in aqueous electrolytes. The organic compounds are composed of earth‐abundant elements and are therefore potentially cost‐effective. Their structures are diverse and highly tunable, rendering it possible to regulate the redox potential, water solubility, and cycling lifespan. Therefore, the adoption of redox‐active organics greatly expands the space for enabling exceeding performance merits compared to their inorganic counterparts. Herein, this work reviews the molecular design and engineering scheme of organic electrolytes, focusing exclusively on pH‐neutral AORFB that uses non‐corrosive and nonflammable pH‐neutral aqueous electrolytes with inexpensive inorganic salts as supporting electrolytes and features high safety, low corrosivity, low cost, and environmental benignity. Some comments on the present challenges and prospects of this ascendant domain are also presented.

Abstract:Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are promising electrochemical energy storage systems, offering vast potential for large-scale applications. Their unique configuration allows energy and power to be decoupled, making them highly scalable and flexible in design. Aqueous RFBs stand out as the most promising technologies, primarily due to their inexpensive supporting electrolytes and high safety. For aqueous RFBs, there has been a skyrocketing increase in studies focusing on the development of advanced functional materials that offer exceptional merits. They include redox-active materials with high solubility and stability, electrodes with excellent mechanical and chemical stability, and membranes with high ion selectivity and conductivity. This review summarizes the types of aqueous RFBs currently studied, providing an outline of the merits needed for functional materials from a practical perspective. We discuss design principles for redox-active candidates that can exhibit excellent performance, ranging from inorganic to organic active materials, and summarize the development of and need for electrode and membrane materials. Additionally, we analyze the mechanisms that cause battery performance decay from intrinsic features to external influences. We also describe current research priorities and development trends, concluding with a summary of future development directions for functional materials with valuable insights for practical applications.

Abstract:Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease which is characterized by chronic polyarthritis and joint destruction as well as by extra-articular manifestations, typically including the appearance of rheumatoid nodules. Although the pathogenesis of the disease is unknown, substantial evidence suggests that it is T cell-mediated. In contrast to experimental models, the disease-mediating T cells in the human situation have never been isolated or identified. We expanded T lymphocytes from human rheumatoid nodules by IL-2 stimulation and observed a marked oligoclonality among these expanded lymphocytes. This tendency towards oligoclonality was not seen in IL-2-expanded lymphocytes from peripheral blood. We hypothesize that this oligoclonal expansion reflects a clonally restricted in situ preactivation of lymphocytes and that precisely these preactivated cells are involved in the pathogenesis of the rheumatic process.

Abstract:Redox flow batteries (RFBs) using organic materials in organic solvents are particularly promising because of the diversity of organic materials and the wide redox‐innocent window of organic solvents, yet the further development of this type of RFB has been hindered by the lack of suitable anolyte materials with high potentials, solubility, and stability. Herein, we examine the physical and electrochemical properties of azobenzene ( AzoPh ) compounds and investigate their degradation mechanism in nonaqueous organic RFB. The azobenzene displayed two‐electron activity at –1.69 and –2.20 V vs. Ag/Ag + . Paired with a well‐established PEGylated phenothiazine ( PEG3‐PTZ ) catholyte, the battery presents a high theoretical cell voltage of 2.08 V. The azobenzene‐based RFB displays a capacity retention of 93.3% over 50 cycles with an average fade rate of 0.13% per cycle. The capacity decay mechanism was probed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and high‐resolution mass spectrometry, and revealed proton‐assisted degradation mechanisms.

Abstract:Organic electroactive materials take advantages of potentially sustainable production and structural tunability compared to present commercial inorganic materials. Unfortunately, traditional redox flow batteries based on toxic redox‐active metal ions have certain deficiencies in resource utilization and environmental protection. In comparison, organic electroactive materials in aqueous redox flow batteries (ARFBs) have received extensive attentions in recent years for low‐cost and sustainable energy storage systems due to their inherent safety. This review aims to provide the recent progress in organic electroactive materials for ARFBs. We first classify the main reaction types of organic electroactive materials in ARFBs to provide an overview on how to regulate their solubility, potential, stability and viscosity. Then, the organic anolyte and catholyte in ARFBs are summarized according to the types of quinones, viologens, nitroxide radicals, hydroquinones etc, and how to increase the solubility by designing various functional groups is emphasized. We next present the research advances of the characterization of organic electroactive materials for ARFBs. Future efforts are finally suggested to focus on building neutral ARFBs, designing advanced electroactive materials through molecular engineering, and resolving problems of commercial applications. Abstract:The increasing demand to decarbonize the power grid is driving the development of low cost, sustainable and stable energy storage media. Redox flow batteries (RFB) have always been a strong candidate owing to their easy scalability, long cycle life and versatility. Modular design of RFB's allows better control on energy and power density and many components of this battery, such as the electrolyte, ion-exchange membrane, and bipolar plates can be modified to better utilize the chemical energy stored in redox species [1]. The current state-of-the-art RFB uses vanadium electrolytes with Nafion as an ion-exchange membrane. However, the vanadium system has a limited energy density (around 35 Wh/L), limited availability and has electrolyte cross-over issues. Research in RFBs has been shifting towards redox-active aqueous-organic-based electrolytes consisting of Earth-abundant elements (C, H, O, N, S, F etc.), accommodating the need for green, safe, and low-cost energy storage [3]. Organic-based RFBs with energy densities over 100 Wh/L have been demonstrated [4]. However, studies show that the electrolyte cross-over issues limits organic RFBs as well. Finding a compatible ion-exchange membrane with long cycle life is a challenge that has impeded the growth of RFB in commercial markets for decades [4]. This research work proposes an aqueous-organic-electrolyte-based, membrane-free electrochemical cell to help eliminate membrane clogging issues. Our previous work has shown the proof of concept – a membrane free auxiliary electrode-based cell working for over one hundred cycles [5]. The auxiliary electrode setup enables high-energy-dense organic electrolytes and cells with one or two traditional compartments (catholyte, anolyte) can be employed. We believe this emerging membrane free design which still requires attention on fundamental scientific issues, can provides new opportunities for high-energy batteries for the future. Redox-Active Eutectic Electrolyte with Viologen and Ferrocene Derivatives for Flow Batteries

Abstract:Nonflammable eutectic solvents show great potential to enhance the concentrations of the redox-active materials and the cell voltages for redox flow batteries (RFBs). Herein, we report a promising redox-active eutectic electrolyte (1.5 M total redox species) with viologen and ferrocene derivatives where both of the redox reactions are reversible with a maximum open-circuit voltage of 1.35 V and an energy density of 15.1 Wh L-1, which is relevant to large-scale energy storage. The charge-discharge (from 75 to 25% state of charge) characteristics in a flow cell (0.15 M negolyte and 0.3 M posolyte) showed that it can be cycled with consistent discharge capacity for 12 h (19 cycles), beyond which pressure-driven crossover between the posolyte and negolyte reservoirs leads to capacity decay. This study points to promising new directions toward eutectic electrolyte development for RFBs where we demonstrate increasing the polarity, functionalizing the redox molecules, and separating redox intermediates to prevent undesired side reactions can make improvements in operating cell voltage, energy density, and cyclability.

Abstract:Redox flow batteries (RFBs) have gained popularity as large-scale energy storage systems for wind and solar powered grids. Modern RFB systems are based on highly corrosive and/or flammable electrolytes. Organic redox active species for RFBs are gaining commercial traction, but there is a trade-off in choosing aqueous or non-aqueous electrolytes in terms of rate capabilities, energy density, safety and cost. While modification of organic redox molecules to mitigate these issues is prevalent in the literature, the search for novel electrolyte systems is scarce. Here we present microemulsion-based electrolytes as an alternative for the next generation of organic RFBs. Micro-emulsion electrolytes (MEs) offer the advantages of decoupled solubility and ionic conductivity, broad electrochemical windows, non-flammability, simple fabrication modes and low cost of constituent chemicals. The electrochemical properties of organic redox species in MEs have been investigated for RFB requirements and a proof-of-concept flow cell with a widely studied redox system and a commercial membrane is shown. The compositions of MEs can be tailored to the redox system, making them a platform of electrolytes for all organic redox systems under consideration and benefit.

Abstract:As a necessary supplement to clean renewable energy, aqueous flow batteries have become one of the most promising next-generation energy storage and conversion devices because of their excellent safety, high efficiency, flexibility, low cost, and particular capability of being scaled severally in light of energy and power density. The water-soluble redox-active electrolytes are the core components of aqueous flow batteries. The redox-active organic molecules have leaped to the more important electrolytes than conventional inorganic species because of their structural diversity, tailorability, and potential low cost. Much research work was conducted on organic electrolytes for designing high-performance aqueous flow batteries. The motivation of this review is to summarize and present the structure features, property evaluation methods, performance improvement schemes and battery design principles. The detailed functionalization methods to improve the physical and chemical performances of organic electrolytes including redox potential, reaction kinetic rate, solubility, and permeability have been emphatically provided and analyzed. Abstract:Aqueous organic redox flow battery (AORFB) is regarded as the most promising next-generation technology for energy storage that stores electricity in redox-active organics lysed in mild salt-electrolytes. Composed of abundant elements such as C, H, O, and N, the adapted organics have a high degree of structural diversity and tunability, endowing it possible to modulate the physicochemical properties of water solubility, redox potential, and stability, and resulting in potential cost-effectiveness, ecological and environmental safety. Therefore, the designable organics consumedly expand the distance for exceeding battery behaviors in comparison with the inorganic counterparts. Herein, this study presents an overview of pH-neutral AORFBs that employ nonflammable water-soluble molecules with cheap inorganic salts as supporting electrolytes. Particular emphasis is given to the progress of molecular engineering design and synthesis of non-viologen-based organic anolytes and their respective AORFB performance. Additionally, some comments on present opportunities and perspectives of this ascendant domain are also demonstrated.

Abstract:Redox flow batteries (RFBs) have great potential for long‐duration grid‐scale energy storage. Ion conducting membranes are a crucial component in RFBs, allowing charge‐carrying ions to transport while preventing the cross‐mixing of redox couples. Commercial Nafion membranes are widely used in RFBs, but their unsatisfactory ionic and molecular selectivity as well as high costs limit the performance and the widespread deployment of this technology. To extend the longevity and reduce the cost of RFB systems, inexpensive ion‐selective membranes are highly desired that concurrently deliver low ionic resistance and high selectivity towards redox‐active species. In this work, high‐performance RFB membranes are fabricated from blends of carboxylate‐ and amidoxime‐functionalized polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) that exploit the beneficial properties of both polymers. The enthalpy‐driven formation of cohesive interchain interactions, including hydrogen bonds and salt bridges, facilitates the microscopic miscibility of the blends, while ionizable functional groups within the sub‐nanometer pores allow optimization of membrane ion transport functions. The resulting microporous membranes demonstrate fast cation conduction with low crossover of redox‐active molecular species, enabling improved power ratings and reduced capacity fade in aqueous RFBs using anthraquinone and ferrocyanide as redox couples. Abstract:The utilization of intermittent renewable energy sources needs low-cost, reliable energy storage systems in the future. Among various electrochemical energy storage systems, redox flow batteries (RFBs) are promising with merits of independent energy storage and power generation capability, localization flexibility, high efficiency, low scaling-up cost, and excellent long charge/discharge cycle life. RFBs typically use metal ions as reacting species. The most exploited types are all-vanadium RFBs (VRFBs). Here, we discuss the core components for the VRFBs, including the development and application of different types of membranes, electrode materials, and stack system. In addition, we introduce the recent progress in the discovery of novel electrolytes, such as redox-active organic compounds, polymers, and organic/inorganic suspensions. Versatile structures, tunable properties, and abundant resources of organic-based electrolytes make them suitable for cost-effective stationary applications. With the active species in solid form, suspension electrolytes are expected to provide enhanced volumetric energy densities.

Abstract:Engineering suitable redox molecules In a flow battery, catholyte and anolyte are stored in separate tanks, and pumps are used to circulate the fluids into a stack with electrodes separated by a thin membrane. Such batteries are ideal for large-scale grid storage applications; however, suitable redox molecules are currently limited. Feng et al. used “molecular engineering” to modify an inexpensive precursor (9-fluorenone) as the basis for an organic-based redox flow battery (see the Perspective by Hu and Liu). The authors tested a series of variant molecules in a redox flow battery in which the reactions involve reversible ketone hydrogenation and dehydrogenation in an aqueous electrolyte. These reactions have advantageous features, including two-electron redox and operation in air and at elevated temperatures (50°C), that are more suitable for real-world applications.
