Abstract:The treatment of effluents containing salicylhydroxamic acid, an aromatic base flotation agent widely used in ore dressing industry as a collector or extractant of copper and lead-zinc oxides, rare earth, and gold ores as well as kaoline, has become a very important environmental issue. Environmental purification by using TiO2 photocatalysts, however, has attracted a great deal of attention with the increasing number of recent environmental problems in the world. In this paper, the preliminary results of the photocatalytic degradation of salicythydroxamic acid by TiO2 Nano Particles will be presented, and a new process for the treatment of mineral processing waste water containing salicythydroxamic acid will be also promised. Some titanium dioxide nano-particle samples were firstly prepared by Sol-Gel method with Ti(OBU)(4) as the precursor. The influence of the preparation conditions on the size and crystalline phase of the TiO2 crystalline was studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), TG-DTA and TEM techniques. After the precursor was calcined at 400degreesC for 4 hours, the crystalline phase of titanium dioxide was transformed from amorphous into a photoactive crystalline phase (anatase) with 13nm according to the calculation of Scheller formula. The result of TG-DTA of TiO2 particles combined with the XRD showed that the phase of TiO2 changed from amorphous to anatase phase when the temperature increased from 250degreesC to 450degreesC. The photocatalytic degradation of Salicylhydroxamic Acid by TiO2 Nano Particles was carried out subsequently. The effects of the reaction time, pH, initial concentration of salicythydroxamic acid and TiO2 dosage on the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of salicylhydroxamic acid were studied. The results showed that the increasing amounts of catalyst could significantly enhance the reaction efficiency and degradation efficiency under the experimental conditions, but the increasing initial concentration of salicylhydroxamic acid would decrease its degradative efficiency, and weak acidity of the solution (pH=3similar to5) could increase the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of salicylhydroxamic acid. At the same time, the kinetics of phtocatalytic degradation of salicylhydroxamic acid using TiO2 as photocatalyst was also studied in self-made photo-reactor. The results of kinetic study shows that the degradation reaction could be expressed in forms of the first-order reaction kinetic model.
