Abstract:We prove the existence of defective secant varieties of three-factor and four-factor Segre-Veronese varieties embedded in certain multi-degree. These defective secant varieties were previously unknown and are of importance in the classification of defective secant varieties of Segre-Veronese varieties with three or more factors.

Abstract:We prove that Segre-Veronese varieties are never secant defective if each degree is at least three. The proof is by induction on the number of factors, degree and dimension. As a corollary, we give an almost optimal non-defectivity result for Segre-Veronese varieties with one degree equal to one and all the others at least three.

Abstract:Let $SV^{\pmb n}_{\pmb d}$ be the Segre-Veronese given as the image of the embedding induced by the line bundle $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^{n_1}\times\dots\times\mathbb{P}^{n_r}}(d_1,\dots, d_r)$. We prove that asymptotically $SV^{\pmb n}_{\pmb d}$ is not $h$-defective for $h\leq n_1^{\lfloor \log_2(d-1)\rfloor}$.

Partially symmetric tensors and the non-defectivity of secant varieties of products with a projective line as a factor

Abstract:We prove (with a mild restriction on the multidegrees) that all secant varieties of Segre-Veronese varieties with $k>2$ factors, $k-2$ of them being $\mathbb{P}^1$, have the expected dimension. This is equivalent to compute the dimension of the set of all partially symmetric tensors with a fixed rank and the same format. The proof uses the case $k=2$ proved by Galuppi and Oneto. Our theorem is an easy consequence of a theorem proved here for arbitrary projective varieties with a projective line as a factor and with respect to complete linear systems.

Abstract:For a general cubic fourfold $X \subset \mathbb{P}^5$, we compute the Hodge numbers of the locus $S \subset F$ of lines of second type. We also give an upper bound of 6 for the degree of irrationality of the Fano scheme of lines of any smooth cubic hypersurface.

Abstract:In this paper, inspired by work of Fano, Morin and Campana--Flenner, we give a full projective classification of (however singular) varieties of dimension 3 whose general hyperplane sections have negative Kodaira dimension, and we partly extend such a classification to varieties of dimension $n\geq 4$ whose general surface sections have negative Kodaira dimension. In particular we prove that a variety of dimension $n\geq 3$ whose general surface sections have negative Kodaira dimension is birationally equivalent to the product of a general surface section times $\p^{n-2}$ unless (possibly) if the variety is a cubic hypersurface.

Abstract:A variation of Waring's problem from classical number theory is the question, ``What is the smallest number $s$ such that any generic homogeneous polynomial of degree $d$ in $n+1$ variables may be written as the sum of at most $s$ products of linear forms?'' This question may be answered geometrically by determining the smallest $s$ such that the $s$\nth secant variety of the variety of completely decomposable forms fills the ambient space. If this secant variety has the expected dimension, it is called nondefective, and $s=\left\lceil\binom{n+d}{d}/(dn+1)\right\rceil$. It is conjectured that the secant variety is always nondefective unless $d=2$ and $2\leq s\leq\frac{n}{2}$. We prove several special cases of this conjecture. In particular, we define functions $s_1$ and $s_2$ such that the secant variety is nondefective when $n\geq 3$ and $s\leq s_1(d)$ or when $n=3$ and $s\geq s_2(d)$ and a function $c$ such that the secant variety is nondefective when $d\geq n\geq 4$ and $s\leq 2^{n-3}c(n,d)$. We further show that the secant variety is nondefective when $s\leq 30$ unless $d=2$ and $2\leq s\leq\frac{n}{2}$.

Abstract:In a previous paper, the first three authors formulated a precise conjecture about the dimension of the generalized Severi variety M d , g ; S , k n of degree-d holomorphic maps P 1 → P n whose images' singularities are singleton cusps with value semigroups S and ramification profiles k. In this paper, we prove that an adjusted form of the conjecture holds for generic profiles k associated with two distinguished (infinite) classes of semigroups S.

Abstract:We study the singularities of secant varieties of smooth projective varieties using methods from birational geometry when the embedding line bundle is sufficiently positive. More precisely, we study the Du Bois complex of secant varieties and its relationship with the sheaves of differential forms. Through this analysis, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for these varieties to have $p$-Du Bois singularities (in a sense that was proposed in [SVV23]). In addition, we show that the singularities of these varieties are never higher rational, by giving a classification of the cases when they are pre-1-rational. From these results, we deduce several consequences, including a Kodaira-Akizuki-Nakano type vanishing result for the reflexive differential forms of the secant varieties.

Abstract:In this work we study particular TQFTs in three dimensions, known as Symmetry Topological Field Theories (or SymTFTs), to identify line defects of two-dimensional CFTs arising from the compactification of 6d $(2,0)$ SCFTs on 4-manifolds $M_4$. The mapping class group of $M_4$ and the automorphism group of the SymTFT switch between different absolute 2d theories or global variants. Using the combined symmetries, we realize the topological defects in these global variants. Our main example is $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$. For $N$ M5-branes the corresponding 2d theory inherits $\mathbb{Z}_N$ $0$-form symmetries from the SymTFT. We reproduce the orbifold groupoid for theories with $\mathbb{Z}_N$ $0$-form symmetries and realize the duality defects at fixed points of the coupling constant under elements of the mapping class group. We also study other Hirzebruch surfaces, del Pezzo surfaces, as well as the connected sum of $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$. We find a rich network of global variants connected via automorphisms and realize more interesting topological defects. Finally, we derive the SymTFT on more general 4-manifolds and provide two examples.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite subgroup of $\mathrm{SU}(4)$ whose elements have age not larger than one. In the first part of this paper, we define $K$-theoretic stable pair invariants on the crepant resolution of the affine quotient $\mathbb{C}^4/G$, and conjecture closed formulae for their generating series, expressed in terms of the root system of $G$. In the second part, we define degree zero Donaldson-Thomas invariants of Calabi-Yau 4-orbifolds, develop a vertex formalism that computes the invariants in the toric case and conjecture closed formulae for the quotient stacks $[\mathbb{C}^4/\mathbb{Z}_r]$, $[\mathbb{C}^4/\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2]$. Combining these two parts, we formulate a crepant resolution correspondence which relates the above two theories.

Abstract:The defect of a cubic threefold $X$ with isolated singularities is a global invariant that measures the failure of $\mathbb{Q}$-factoriality. We compute the defect for such cubics by projecting from a singularity. We determine the mixed Hodge structure on the middle cohomology of $X$ in terms of both the defect and local invariants of the singularities. We then relate the defect to various geometric properties of $X$: in particular, we show that a cubic threefold is not $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial if and only if it contains either a plane or a cubic scroll.

Abstract:We obtain a compactness result for various classes of Riemannian metrics in dimension four; in particular our method applies to anti-self-dual metrics, Kahler metrics with constant scalar curvature, and metrics with harmonic curvature. With certain geometric assumptions, the moduli space can be compactified by adding metrics with orbifold singularities. Similar results were obtained previously for Einstein metrics, but our analysis differs substantially from the Einstein case in that we do not assume any pointwise Ricci curvature bound.
