Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the sharp constants of quantitative Hardy and Rellich inequalities on nonreversible Finsler manifolds equipped with arbitrary measures. In particular, these inequalities can be globally refined by adding remainder terms like the Brezis–Vázquez improvement, if Finsler manifolds are of strictly negative flag curvature, vanishing S-curvature and finite uniformity constant. Furthermore, these results remain valid when Finsler metrics are reversible.

Abstract:Pseudo-splines of type I were introduced in [I. Daubechies, B. Han, A. Ron, Z. Shen, Framelets: MRA-based constructions of wavelet frames, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 14 (2003) 1–46] and [Selenick, Smooth wavelet tight frames with zero moments, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 10 (2000) 163–181] and type II were introduced in [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104]. Both types of pseudo-splines provide a rich family of refinable functions with B-splines, interpolatory refinable functions and refinable functions with orthonormal shifts as special examples. In [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104], Dong and Shen gave a regularity analysis of pseudo-splines of both types. The key to regularity analysis is Proposition 3.2 in [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104], which also appeared in [A. Cohen, J.P. Conze, Régularité des bases d'ondelettes et mesures ergodiques, Rev. Mat. Iberoamericana 8 (1992) 351–365] and [I. Daubechies, Ten Lectures on Wavelets, CBMS-NSF Series in Applied Mathematics, SIAM, Philadelphia, 1992] for the case l=N−1. In this note, we will give a new insight into this proposition.
Slope inequality for families of curves over surfaces

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the general notion of the slope for families of curves $f: X \to Y$. The main result is an answer to the above question when $\dim Y = 2$, and we prove a lower bound for this new slope in this case over fields of any characteristic. Both the notion and the slope inequality are compatible with the theory for $\dim Y = 0, 1$ in a very natural way, and this gives a strong evidence that the slope for an $n$-fold fibration of curves $f: X \to Y$ may be $K_{X/Y}^n / \mathrm{ch}_{n-1}(f_* \omega_{X/Y})$. Rather than the usual stability methods, the whole proof of the slope inequality here is based on a completely new method using characteristic $p>0$ geometry. A simpler version of this method yields a new proof of the slope inequality when $\dim Y = 1$.

Abstract:We will give optimal bounds for Seshadri constants of an ample line bundle at multiple points on a complex projective surface X. We also present a solution to the long-studied classical problem on the existence of curves on X with given topological singularities at r arbitrary points p 1,...,p r . Namely, we obtain a universal lower bound on the degree of curves for the existence. It is independent of the position of the singular points.

Abstract:In this paper we show an Arakelov-Yau type inequality for semi-stable families of algebraic curves of genus $g\geq 2$ over characteristic $p$ with nontrivial Kodaira-Spencer maps. As a consequence we give an upper bound of number of algebraic curves of $p-$rank zero in a semi-stable family over characteristic $p$ with nontrivial Kodaira-Spencer map in terms of the genus of a general closed fiber, the genus of the base curve and the number of singular fibres.

Abstract:We demonstrate that almost all elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ with prescribed torsion subgroup, when ordered by naive height, have Szpiro ratio arbitrarily close to the expected value. We also provide upper and lower bounds for the Szpiro ratio that hold for almost all elliptic curves in certain one-parameter families. The results are achieved by proving that, given any multivariate polynomial within a general class, the absolute value of the polynomial over an expanding box is typically bounded by a fixed power of its radical. The proof adapts work of Fouvry--Nair--Tenenbaum, which shows that almost all elliptic curves have Szpiro ratio close to $1$.

Abstract:We get a new inequality on the Hodge number $h^{1,1}(S)$ of fibred algebraic complex surfaces $S$, which is a generalization of an inequality of Beauville. Our inequality implies the Arakelov type inequalities due to Arakelov, Faltings, Viehweg and Zuo, respectively.

Abstract:For immersed curves in Euclidean space of any codimension we establish a Li--Yau type inequality that gives a lower bound of the (normalized) bending energy in terms of multiplicity. The obtained inequality is optimal for any codimension and any multiplicity except for the case of planar closed curves with odd multiplicity; in this remaining case we discover a hidden algebraic obstruction and indeed prove an exhaustive non-optimality result. The proof is mainly variational and involves Langer--Singer's classification of elasticae and André's algebraic-independence theorem for certain hypergeometric functions. We also discuss applications to elastic flows, networks, and knots.

Abstract:The -inequality for smooth points plays an important role in the proofs of birational (super)rigidity. The main aim of this paper is to generalize such an inequality to terminal singular points of type , and obtain a -inequality for points. As applications, we prove birational (super)rigidity of sextic double solids, many other prime Fano 3-fold weighted complete intersections, and del Pezzo fibrations of degree over satisfying the -condition, all of which have at most terminal singularities and terminal quotient singularities. These give first examples of birationally (super)rigid Fano 3-folds and del Pezzo fibrations admitting a point which is not an ordinary double point.

Abstract:In this paper, we uncover an intriguing algebra property of an element symmetric polynomial. By this property, we establish the longtime existence and convergence of a locally constrained flow, thereby some families of geometric inequalities in sphere can be derived. Meanwhile, a new family of ``three terms'' geometric inequalities involving two weighted curvature integrals and one quermassintegral are proved. Unlike hyperbolic spaces, we also obtain an inverse weighted geometric inequality in sphere.

Abstract:In this paper we show an Arakelov inequality for semi-stable families of algebraic curves of genus g⩾1 over characteristic p with nontrivial Kodaira–Spencer maps. We apply this inequality to obtain an upper bound of the number of algebraic curves of p-rank zero in a semi-stable family over characteristic p with nontrivial Kodaira–Spencer map in terms of the genus of a general closed fiber, the genus of the base curve and the number of singular fibres. The parallel results for smooth families of Abelian varieties over k with W2-lifting assumption are also obtained.

Abstract:We study the standard family of supercurves of genus 1 with an underlying odd spin structures. We give a simple algebraic description of this family and of the compactified family of stable supercurves with one Neveu-Schwarz puncture. We also describe the Gauss-Manin connection on the first de Rham cohomology of this family and compute the superperiods of global differentials.

Abstract:In this paper we refine recent work due to A. Shankar, A. N. Shankar, and X. Wang on counting elliptic curves by conductor to the case of elliptic curves with a rational 2-torsion point. This family is a small family, as opposed to the large families considered by the aforementioned authors. We prove the analogous counting theorem for elliptic curves with so-called square-free index as well as for curves with suitably bounded Szpiro ratios. We note that our assumptions on the size of the Szpiro ratios is less stringent than would be expected by the naive generalization of their approach.

Abstract:This is a continuation of our previous work ( Ann. Sc. Norm. Super. Pisa Cl. Sci. , 20 , 1295–1324, 2020). Let (Σ, g ) be a closed Riemann surface, where the metric g has conical singularities at finite points. Suppose G is a group whose elements are isometries acting on (Σ, g ). Trudinger–Moser inequalities involving G are established via the method of blow-up analysis, and the corresponding extremals are also obtained. This extends previous results of Chen ( Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. , 1990), Iula–Manicini ( Nonlinear Anal. , 2017), and the authors (2020).

Abstract:We prove that the set of `low rank' points on sufficiently large fibre powers of families of curves are not Zariski dense. The recent work of Dimitrov-Gao-Habegger and Kühne (and Yuan) imply the existence of a bound which is exponential in the rank, and the Zilber-Pink conjecture implies a bound which is linear in the rank. Our main result is a (slightly weaker) linear bound for `low ranks'. We also prove analogous results for isotrivial families (with relaxed conditions on the rank) and for solutions to the $S$-unit equation, where the bounds are now sub-exponential in the rank. Our proof involves a notion of the Chabauty-Coleman(-Kim) method in families (or, in some sense, for simply connected varieties). For Zariski non-density, we use the recent work of Blàzquez-Sanz, Casale, Freitag and Nagloo on Ax-Schanuel theorems for foliations on principal bundles.

An Improvement of the Hasse-Weil Bound for Artin-Schreier Curves Via Cyclotomic Function Fields

Abstract:The corresponding Hasse-Weil bound was a major breakthrough in history of mathematics. It has found many applications in mathematics, coding theory and theoretical computer science. In general, the Hasse-Weil bound is tight and cannot be improved. However, the Hasse-Weil bound is no longer tight when it is applied to some specific classes of curves. One of the examples where the Hasse-Weil bound is not tight is the family of Artin-Schreier curves. Due to various applications of Artin-Schreier curves to coding, cryptography and theoretical computer science, researchers have made great effort to improve the Hasse-Weil bound for Artin-Schreier curves. In this paper, we focus on the number of rational places of the Artin-Schreier curve defined by $y^p-y=f(x)$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of characteristic $p$, where $f(x)$ is a polynomial in $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$. Our road map for attacking this problem works as follows. We first show that the function field $E_f:=\mathbb{F}_q(x,y)$ of the Artin-Schreier curve $y^p-y=f(x)$ is a subfield of some cyclotomic function field. We then make use of the class field theory to prove that the number of points of the curve is upper bounded by a function of a minimum distance of a linear code. By analyzing the minimum distance of this linear code, we can improve the Hasse-Weil bound and Serre bound for Artin-Schreier curves.
