Abstract:In cold atomic systems, fast and high-resolution microscopy of individual atoms is crucial, since it can provide direct information on the dynamics and correlations of the system. Here, we demonstrate nanosecond-scale two-dimensional stroboscopic pictures of a single trapped ion beyond the optical diffraction limit, by combining the main idea of ground-state depletion microscopy with quantum-state transition control in cold atoms. We achieve a spatial resolution up to 175 nm using a NA = 0.1 objective in the experiment, which represents a more than tenfold improvement compared with direct fluorescence imaging. To show the potential of this method, we apply it to observe the secular motion of the trapped ion; we demonstrate a temporal resolution up to 50 ns with a displacement detection sensitivity of 10 nm. Our method provides a powerful tool for probing particle positions, momenta, and correlations, as well as their dynamics in cold atomic systems.

Abstract:We present a novel imaging system for ultracold quantum gases in expansion. After release from a confining potential, atoms fall through a sheet of resonant excitation laser light and the emitted fluorescence photons are imaged onto an amplified CCD camera using a high numerical aperture optical system. The imaging system reaches an extraordinary dynamic range, not attainable with conventional absorption imaging. We demonstrate single-atom detection for dilute atomic clouds with high efficiency where at the same time dense Bose-Einstein condensates can be imaged without saturation or distortion. The spatial resolution can reach the sampling limit as given by the 8 \mu m pixel size in object space. Pulsed operation of the detector allows for slice images, a first step toward a 3D tomography of the measured object. The scheme can easily be implemented for any atomic species and all optical components are situated outside the vacuum system. As a first application we perform thermometry on rubidium Bose-Einstein condensates created on an atom chip.

In situ subwavelength microscopy of ultracold atoms using dressed excited states

Abstract:In this work, we implement a new method for imaging ultracold atoms with subwavelength resolution capabilities and determine its regime of validity. It uses the laser driven interaction between excited states to engineer hyperfine ground state population transfer in a three-level system on scales much smaller than the optical resolution. Subwavelength imaging of a quantum gas is atypical in the sense that the measurement itself perturbs the dynamics of the system. To avoid induced dynamics affecting the measurement, one usually measures "rapidly" the wavefunction in a so-called strong imaging regime. We experimentally illustrate this regime using a thermal gas ensemble, and demonstrate subwavelength resolution in quantitative agreement with a fully analytical model. Additionally, we show that, counter-intuitively, the opposite weak imaging regime can also be exploited to reach subwavelength resolution. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate that this regime is a robust solution to select and spatially resolve a 30 nm wide wavefunction, which was created and singled out from a tightly confined 1D optical lattice. Using a general dissipation-included formalism, we derive validity criteria for both regimes. The formalism is applicable to other subwavelength methods.

Abstract:There are an increasing number of experimental scenarios where near-resonant light is applied to atoms tightly trapped in far off-resonant optical fields, such as for quantum optics applications or for atom imaging. Oftentimes, the electronic ground and excited states involved in the optical transition experience unequal trapping potentials. Here, we systematically analyze the effects of unequal trapping on near-resonant atom-light interactions. In particular, we identify regimes where such trapping can lead to significant excess heating compared to atoms in state-independent potentials, and a reduction of total and elastic scattering cross sections associated with a decreased atom-photon interaction efficiency. Understanding these effects can be valuable for achieving maximum efficiency in quantum optics experiments or atom imaging setups, where efficient atom-light interactions on resonance are desired, but achieving equal trapping is not feasible.

Abstract:We demonstrate the nondestructive imaging of a lattice gas of ultracold bosons. Atomic fluorescence is induced in the simultaneous presence of degenerate Raman sideband cooling. The combined influence of these processes controllably cycles an atom between a dark state and a fluorescing state while eliminating heating and loss. Through spatially resolved sideband spectroscopy following the imaging sequence, we demonstrate the efficacy of this imaging technique in various regimes of lattice depth and fluorescence acquisition rate. Our work provides an important extension of quantum gas imaging to the nondestructive detection, control, and manipulation of atoms in optical lattices. In addition, our technique can also be extended to atomic species that are less amenable to molasses-based lattice imaging.

Abstract:Optical absorption imaging has become a common technique for detecting the density distribution of ultracold atoms. The defocus effect generally produces artificial spatial structures in the obtained images, which confuses our understanding of the quantum systems. Here we experimentally demonstrate one method to optimize the optical imaging system by \emph{in-situ} imaging the plugged hole in the cold atoms. The atoms confined in a magnetic trap are cooled to tens of or several microkelvin by the radio-frequency evaporation cooling, and then are plugged using a blue-detuned laser beam, forming a hole in the center of the atomic cloud. We image the hole with a charge-coupled device (CCD) and quantitatively analyze the artificial spatial structure due to the defocus effect. Through minimizing the artificial structures by precisely adjusting the CCD position, we can optimize the imaging system with an accuracy of 0.1 mm. We also demonstrate the necessity of this method in probing rubidium BEC with a time of flight (TOF) of 5 ms. Compared to other methods in focusing the imaging system, the proposal demonstrated in this paper is simple and efficient, particularly for experimentally extracting large-scale parameters like atomic density, atomic number and the size of the atomic cloud.

Abstract:We consider critical space-time correlations in trapped utracold atoms and propose a method for their detection by the interference with a reference Bose-Einstein condensate. An important information about universal properties can be obtained despite non-uniformity and small sizes of atomic clouds. The advantage of this method is that the correlation properties of the interference pattern are robust with respect to expansion and are not, practically, affected by microscopic structure of underlying lattice including structural disorder. The non-destructive scheme allows measuring the space-time correlators of arbitrary order.

Abstract:We propose a model for realizing frequency-dependent spatial variations of the probe susceptibility in a cold atomic sample. It is found that the usual Kramers-Kronig (KK) relation between real and imaginary parts of the probe susceptibility in the frequency domain can be mapped into the space domain as a far detuned control field of intensity linearly varied in space is used. This non-Hermitian medium exhibits then a unidirectional reflectionless frequency band for probe photons incident from either the left or the right sample end. It is of special interest that we can tune the frequency band as well as choose the direction corresponding to the vanishing reflectivity by changing, respectively, the control field intensity and frequency. The nonzero reflectivity from the other direction is typically small for realistic atomic densities, but can be largely enhanced by incorporating the Bragg scattering into the spatial KK relation so as to achieve a high reflectivity contrast.

Abstract:We propose to utilize density distributions from a series of time-of-flight images of an expanding cloud to reconstruct single-particle correlation functions of trapped ultra-cold atoms. In particular, we show how this technique can be used to detect off-diagonal correlations of atoms in a quasi-one-dimensional trap, where both real- and momentum- space correlations are extracted at a quantitative level. The feasibility of this method is analyzed with specific examples, taking into account finite temporal and spatial resolutions in experiments.
Resonant light scattering by a slab of ultracold atoms

Abstract:A gas of ultracold atoms probed with laser light is a nearly-ideal experimental realization of a medium of resonant point-like scatterers, a key problem from condensed matter to biology or photonics. Yet, several recent experiments have reported large discrepancies with theory. In this work, we measure the complex transmission through a slab of ultracold two-level atoms with an interferometric technique. We find good agreement with first-principles simulations of mutually-coupled, laser-driven dipoles, and provide an explanation for the discrepancies in earlier measurements.

Abstract:A high-resolution projection and imaging system for ultracold atoms is implemented using a compound silicon and glass atom chip. The atom chip is metalized to enable magnetic trapping while glass regions enable high numerical aperture optical access to atoms residing in the magnetic trap about 100 microns below the chip surface. The atom chip serves as a wall of the vacuum system, which enables the use of commercial microscope components for projection and imaging. Holographically generated light patterns are used to optically slice a cigar-shaped magnetic trap into separate regions; this has been used to simultaneously generate up to four Bose-condensates. Using fluorescence techniques we have demonstrated in-trap imaging resolution down to 2.5 microns

Abstract:We demonstrate novel implementations of high-precision optical magnetometers which allow for spatially-selective and spatially-resolved in situ measurements using cold atomic clouds. These are realised by using shaped dispersive probe beams combined with spatially-resolved balanced homodyne detection. Two magnetometer sequences are discussed: a vectorial magnetometer, which yields sensitivities two orders of magnitude better compared to a previous realisation and a Larmor magnetometer capable of measuring absolute magnetic fields. We characterise the dependence of single-shot precision on the size of the analysed region for the vectorial magnetometer and provide a lower bound for the measurement precision of magnetic field gradients for the Larmor magnetometer. Finally, we give an outlook on how dynamic trapping potentials combined with selective probing can be used to realise enhanced quantum simulations in quantum gas microscopes.

Abstract:We consider light scattering from ultracold atoms trapped in an optical lattice into a cavity. The measurement of photons leaking out the cavity provides a quantum nondemolition (QND) access to various atomic variables. Depending on the chosen geometry the time resolved light detection projects the atomic quantum state to various atom-number squeezed and Schroedinger cat states. Modifications of the atomic and light properties at a single quantum trajectory are demonstrated. The quantum structure of final states can be revealed by further observations of the same sample.

Abstract:By investigating the quantum properties of magnetically trapped nS Rydberg atoms, it is demonstrated that the composite nature of Rydberg atoms significantly alters their trapping properties opposed to point-like particles with the same magnetic moment. We show how the specific signatures of the Rydberg trapping potential can be probed by means of ground state atoms that are off-resonantly coupled to the Rydberg state via a two photon laser transition. In addition, it is demonstrated how this approach provides new possibilities for generating traps for ground state atoms. Simulated time-of-flight pictures mirroring the experimental situation are provided.

Abstract:Cold atomic gases resonantly excited to Rydberg states can exhibit strong optical nonlinearity at the single photon level. We observe that in such samples radiation trapping leads to an additional mechanism for Rydberg excitation. Conversely we demonstrate that Rydberg excitation provides a novel in situ probe of the spectral, statistical, temporal and spatial properties of the trapped re-scattered light. We also show that absorption can lead to an excitation saturation that mimics the Rydberg blockade effect. Collective effects due to multiple scattering may co-exist with co-operative effects due to long-range interactions between the Rydberg atoms, adding a new dimension to quantum optics experiments with cold Rydberg gases.

Abstract:We utilize the combination of two standard trapping techniques, a magnetic trap and an optical trap in a Raman setup, to propose a versatile and tunable trap for cold atoms. The created potential provides several advantages over conventional trapping potentials. One can easily convert the type of the trap, e.g., from a single well to a double well trap. Atoms in different internal states can be trapped in different trap types, thereby enabling the realization of experiments with multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates. Moreover, one can achieve variations of the trapping potential on small length scales without the need of microstructures. We present the potential surfaces for different setups, demonstrate their tunability, give a semi-analytical expression for the potential, and propose experiments which can be realized within such a trap.

Abstract:We extend the quasilocal (metric-based) Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity so that it may be used to study regions of spacetime with null boundaries. In particular we use this generalized Brown-York formalism to study the physics of isolated horizons. We show that the first law of isolated horizon mechanics follows directly from the first variation of the Hamiltonian. This variation is not restricted to the phase space of solutions to the equations of motion but is instead through the space of all (off-shell) spacetimes that contain isolated horizons. We find two-surface integrals evaluated on the horizons that are consistent with the Hamiltonian and which define the energy and angular momentum of these objects. These are closely related to the corresponding Komar integrals and for Kerr-Newman spacetime are equal to the corresponding ADM/Bondi quantities. Thus, the energy of an isolated horizon calculated by this method is in agreement with that recently calculated by Ashtekar and collaborators but not the same as the corresponding quasilocal energy defined by Brown and York. Isolated horizon mechanics and Brown-York thermodynamics are compared.

Abstract:In this paper we show that the sensitivity of absorption imaging of ultracold atoms can be significantly improved by imaging in a standing-wave configuration. We present simulations of single-atom absorption imaging both for a travelling-wave and a standing-wave imaging setup, based on a scattering approach to calculate the optical density of a single atom. We find that the optical density of a single atom is determined only by the numerical aperture of the imaging system. We determine optimum imaging parameters, taking all relevant sources of noise into account. For reflective imaging we find an improvement of 1.7 in the maximum signal-to-noise ratio can be achieved. This is particularly useful for imaging in the vicinity of an atom chip, where a reflective surface is naturally present.
