Abstract:Three novel macrocyclic ligands, L1-L3, in which a ferrocene unit and a fluorescent moiety are linked to polyselena rings have been designed and prepared from 1,1'-bis(3-bromopropylseleno)ferrocene. Reaction of L with [M(NCMe)(4)](PF6)(2) (M = Pd and Pt) led to complexes [ML](PF6)(2) (M = Pd and Pt). Crystal structure analysis revealed that after complexation, the macrocyclic ligand adopts the unusual c,c,c conformation due to intramolecular C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions from the hydrogen atoms of ferrocene moieties to the naphthalene ring. Electrochemical studies showed that in [ML] (PF6)(2) (M = Pd and Pt) the half-wave potential of the 1,1'-ferrocenediyl group shifts to much more positive potentials due to electron density withdrawn from Se donor atoms. Electrochemical and optical measurements were used to calculate HOMO and LUMO levels as well as HOMO-LUMO band gaps. Results were compared and correlated with the differences in molecular structures.

Abstract:Three diiron ethanedithiolate complexes containing pendant ferrocene were prepared and structurally characterized. Reaction of the complex [{mu-SCH2CH(CH2OH)S}Fe-2(CO)(6)] (1) with ferrocenecarboxylic acid in the presence of N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide and 4-dimethylaminopyridine afforded complex [{mu-SCH2CH(CH(2)O(2)CFc)S}Fe-2(CO)(6)] (Fc = ferrocenyl) (2) in 73% yield. Further treatment of complex 2 with a monophosphine ligand tris(2-methoxyphenyl)phosphine or tris(2-furyl)phosphine in the presence of the decarbonylating agent Me3NO center dot 2H(2)O yielded the monophosphine-substituted complexes [{mu-SCH2CH(CH(2)O(2)CFc)S}Fe-2(CO)(5)P(2-C6H4OCH3)(3)] (3) and [{mu-SCH2CH(CH(2)O(2)CFc)S}Fe-2(CO)(5)P(2-C4H3O)(3)] (4) in 94% and 85% yields, respectively. The complexes 2-4 were characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. In addition, electrochemical properties of the complexes 2-4 were studied by cyclic voltammetry. Abstract:A series of novel ferrocene-containing Schiff base complexes, (C10H6N2)CNNCRFc, (C10H6N2)CNC6H4NCRFc and (C10H6N2)CNC6H4C6 H4NCRFc (R: H, CH3), have been synthesized using 1,10-phenanthroline and ferrocene as starting materials. The derivatives were characterized by elemental analyses and spectral data (IR, UV, MS and 1H NMR). The single-crystal X-ray structure is presented for (C10H6N2)CNNCHFc (1). The cyclic voltammograms of complex 1 have shown reversible one-electron oxidation and two-step one-electron reduction.

Abstract:Fifteen new ferrocene derivatives containing 1H-1,2,4-triazole moiety were synthesized in various yields by the condensation of ferrocenecarboxaldehyde with 1-aryl-3-(1H-1,2,4-triazo-1-yl)-propen-1-ones in toluene. Their structures have been confirmed by H-1 NMR, IR, MS and elemental analysis. In addition, the crystal structure of 41 was determined. Abstract:The syntheses and characterization of novel biferrocene trinuclear complexes for Schiff base ligand, S-methyl-N-(ferrocenyl-1-methyl-methylidene)dithiocarbazate (hereafter abbreviate as HL), are described. X-ray diffraction studies established the structures of the palladium complex, PdL2 2 and the copper complex, CuL2 3. The geometry of Pd(II) in 2 is close to square planar and in novel cis-configuration with two ferrocene moieties in the same side, while that of Cu(II) in 3 is close to tetrahedral configuration. Electrochemical measurements suggest that the distorted square planar configuration of the Ni(II) and Pd(II) moieties, can effectively transmit the redox effects of the ferrocene moieties, while the distorted tetrahedral configuration of Cu(II) complex can not transmit the redox effects.

Abstract:Two novel macrocyclic polyselena[n]ferrocenophanes containing a pendent benzyl unit, 20-membered Se4N2[7,7]ferrocenophane (L1) and 10-membered Se2N[10]ferrocenophane (L2), were designed and synthesized. The reaction of L1 with two molar amounts of metal salts (M = Cu+, Cu2+, Pd2+ and Hg2+) led to six dimetallic complexes 1-6. A crystallographic study revealed that each metal center in 1-5 was tetra-coordinated to two selenium atoms from different ferrocene units, one aliphatic nitrogen atom and one co-ligand. The structures of the complexes contain a two-fold axis perpendicular to the molecular plane with two pendant benzyl moieties in an anti-conformation. Macrocycle L1 gives significant electro-chemical, linear and third-order nonlinear optical responses to Cu2+ and Hg2+. The DFT/B3LYP calculations of 4 demonstrated a small HOMO-LUMO energy gap and delocalization of the pi-electron cloud in the frontier molecular orbitals, which led to the enhancement of molecular NLO properties after complexation. The results show that the oxidation state of the ferrocene unit is accompanied by significant differences in the corresponding absorption spectra and third-order NLO properties.

Abstract:A (D-pi-A) ligand, feirocene-cyano-carboxylic acid, was synthesized, and it was assembled with organotins, dibutyltin oxide (n-Bu2SnO), to obtain a novel ferrocene organotin coordination compond. They have been characterized by H-1 NMR, Sn-119 NMR, IR, FT-IR, UV-Vis and elemental analysis. The crystal structure of complex has been determined by X-ray single crystal diffraction. Their electrochemical and two-photon absorption properties were systematically studied using cyclic voltammetry and Z-scan determination method. The results indicated that the complex is more difficult to be oxidized and possess a larger two-photon absorption cross section than its ligand. CCDC: 921958.

Abstract:A series of ferrocenylacetylenylbiphenyl derivatives Fc-CCR [R=C6H4C6H5 (1), C6H4C6H4I (2), C6H4C6H4NO2 (3), C6H3(NO2)C6H4I (4)] and Fc-CCR′CCR″ [R″=Fc, R′=C6H4C6H4 (5), C6H3(NO2)C6H4 (6); R″=C6H5, R′=C6H4C6H4 (7)] were synthesized from FcCCH and biphenyl iodides by the Castro–Stephens and Sonogashira coupling reactions, in which compounds 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 are new. Seven new complexes [Fc-CCR][Co2(CO)6] [R=C6H4C6H5 (8), C6H4C6H4I (9), C6H4C6H4NO2 (10), C6H3(NO2)C6H4I (11)] and [Fc-CCR′CCR″] [Co2(CO)6]2 [R″=Fc, R′=C6H4C6H4 (12), C6H3(NO2)C6H4 (13); R″=C6H5, R′=C6H4C6H4 (14)] were obtained by the reaction of the ligands Fc-CCR and Fc-CCR′CCR″ with Co2(CO)8, respectively. Compounds 1–7 and their complexes 8–14 have been characterized by element analysis and spectroscopy, as well as by X-ray diffraction for 1, 4, 8, 9 and 11. The electrochemical data of compounds 1–12 have been obtained by cyclic voltammetry.

Abstract:Novel fluorescenct chemosensors for Cu2+ and Fe3+ based on 9-(cycloheptatrienylidene)fluorene derivatives (1 and 2) were prepared and characterized. 1 displayed quenched emission when either Cu2+ or Fe3+ was added into its acetonitrile solution, while 2 could successfully identify Fe3+ or Cu2+ by enhanced emission with addition of Fe3+ in its methanol or with addition of Cu2+ in its acetonitrile solution.

Abstract:Two ferrocene derivatives, namely, 1,2-(tetramethylene)-ferrocene and 1,2,1′,2′-bis(tetramethylene)-ferrocene, were synthesized in a four-step reaction sequence starting from ferrocene. Friedel–Crafts acylation of ferrocene using succinic anhydride gave mono- or bis(3-carboxypropinoyl)-ferrocene depending on the stoichiometry of succinic anhydride. The reduction of the keto groups to methylene followed by ring-closing using trifluoroacetic anhydride gave 1,2-(α-ketotetramethylene)-ferrocene or 1,2,1′,2′-bis(α-ketotetramethylene)-ferrocene. The diastereomeric mixture of the latter diketones was separated using column chromatography, characterized via single-crystal X-ray analysis, and assigned its stereochemistry. Reduction of the keto groups to methylene under Clemmensen conditions gave homoannular mono- or bis(tetramethylene)-ferrocene derivatives. The molecular structure of 1,2-(tetramethylene)-ferrocene revealed that the ipso carbon atoms of the cyclopentadienyl group are 0.023(3) Å farther away from Fe(II) compared to the remaining three carbon atoms. Both complexes exhibit lower half-wave oxidation potentials than ferrocene, possibly due to the electron-releasing effects of the tetramethylene bridges.

Abstract:We have designed and synthesized five anthracene derivatives using quinoa perch ether and 2-acetaldehyde pyridine or 4-acetaldehyde pyridine as raw material. Five compounds are 2-(9,10- dihydro-2,3,6,7-tetramethoxy-10-(pyridin-2-yl) anthracen-9- yl)pyridine (1), 2-(2,3,6, 7-tetramethoxy-10-(pyridin-2-yl)anthracen-9-yl) pyridine (2), 4-(9,10-dihydro-2,3,6,7 -tetramethoxy-10-(pyridin-4-yl) anthracen-9-yl) pyridine (3), 4-(2,3,6,7-tetramethoxy- 10-(pyridin-4-yl)anthracen-9-yl) pyridine (4), and 4-(2,3,6,7- tetramethoxy-10-(pyridine-4-yl)anthracen-9-yl) pyridine nitrate (5), respectively. Their single crystals were obtained and determined by X-ray diffraction analysis, and their Hirshfeld surface analysis has also been done. Different compounds with different structures can be obtained from the same raw material by changing the reaction conditions and the concentration of acid. Their fluorescence properties also changed greatly. Structural analysis showed that compounds (1) and (3) were chiral compounds. Both C9, C18 in compound (1) and C6, C15 in compound (3) are chiral carbon atoms. However, when compounds (1) and (3) lose their two protons and become compounds (2) and (4), respectively, which can form an π-conjugated system, there are no chiral carbon atoms and have fluorescence. It lays a foundation for the potential applications of these compounds in the future.

Abstract:In this study, four ferrocenyl indenyl derivatives, C9H7–C≡C–Fc (1), C9H7–C≡C–Ph–Fc (2), C9H7–C≡C–Ph–C≡C–Fc (3), and C9H7–Ph–C≡C–Fc (4) (where C9H7=indenyl; Fc=C5H5FeC5H4; Ph=C6H5), have been synthesized by Sonogashira and Suzuki cross-coupling reactions and characterized by elemental analysis, and FT-IR, 1H, 13C-NMR, and MS spectroscopic methods, respectively. The molecular structures of 1, 2, and 4 were determined by X-ray single crystal diffraction. Two molecules appeared in the crystal structure of 4, and they interact through an intermolecular hydrogen bond. The electrochemical redox potential differences in 1–4 were investigated using cyclic voltammetry and calculations.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of 1,3-dichalcogena-[3]ferrocenophanes are described in which the central position of the triatomic bridge may be occupied by various main group and transition metal elements. Trinuclear [3Jferroceno-phanes Fe{(C5H4E)Y[(EC5H4),FeI}, (Y = P, As, Sb) were obtained from the reactions of 1,1′-bis(trimethylstannyl-chalcogenato)-ferrocenes, Fe(C5H4E-SnMe3)2 (E = S, Se, Te), with the trichlorides PCl3, AsC13 and SbCl3, respectively. Heterobimetallic complexes [Fe(C5H4E)2]M(L)(η5-C5MeS) (M(L) = Rh(PMe,), Ir(PMe3), Ir(PPhl) and Ir(CNtBu)) were prepared by reacting dilithium 1,1′-ferrocene-dichalcogenates Fe(C5H4ELi), (E = S, Se, Te) with η5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl half sandwich compounds (ηs-C5Me5)M(L)Cl2. X-Ray data confirm the absence of bonding interactions between the two metals, Fe and M.

Abstract:S- and Se-heteroarenes containing cyclopenta[b]thiopyran and/or cyclopenta[b]selenopyran moieties have been synthesized via PtCl2-catalyzed ring-expanding cycloaromatizations. Abstract:The electrochemical behavior of a series of heterodimetallic 2-metalla-1,3-dichalcogena-[3]ferrocenophanes of general formula Cp∗(L)M[(EC5-H4)2Fe] (E = S, Se or Te; M = RL, L = PMe3; M = Ir, L = PMe3, PPh3 or C э NtBu) has been investigated. These complexes undergo two successive oxidation steps. In spite of the fact that both metal centres are potentially able to lose electrons, EPR spectra and theoretical considerations suggest that the bridging chalcogen atoms, which are centres of high electron density, also contribute significantly to the electron-removal processes.

Abstract:Bimetallic complexes 3a-e of 1,1'-bisacetylacetoferrocene (2) were prepared by reactions of transition metal acetates M(OAc)(2) (M = Co2+, Mn2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Zn2+) with the 2 in refluxing methanol. The X-ray structures of the cobalt and manganese complexes were determined showing very similar centrosymmetric macrocyclic dimeric frameworks constituted by linkage of two Co2+ or Mn2+ ions and two 1,1'-diacetoacetylferrocene units with two additional methanols as bridges dividing this macrocyclic framework into two small cyclic subunits. The UV-Vis spectra and electronic properties were also studied.

Abstract:Condensation of ferrocenoylacetone with alkyl or aryl diamine (1,2-diaminoethane, 1,3-diaminopropane, 1,4-diaminocyclohexane, 1,4-diaminobenzene) afforded three tridentate ferrocenoyl enaminone ligands (Fc–C(O)CH=C(CH3)NHR1) (L1: R1 = CH2CH2NH2; L3: R1 = 4-C6H4NH2; L5: R1 = 4-C6H10NH2; Fc = ferrocenyl) and four symmetrical tetradentate ferrocenoyl enaminone ligands [(Fc–C(O)CH=C(CH3)NH]2R (L2: R = CH2CH2; L4: R = 4-C6H4; L6: R = 4-C6H10; L8: R = CH2CH2CH2). Of which, L3 was further reacted with appropriate substituted salicylaldehydes to give unsymmetrical Schiff base ligands Fc–C(O)CH=C(CH3)NH(4-C6H4)N=CH(2-OHAr) (L9: Ar = C6H4; L10: Ar = 5-ClC6H3; L11: Ar = 5-NO2C6H3; L12: Ar = 3,5-Br2C6H2; L13: Ar = 3,5-tBu2C6H2). All new ligands L3∼L6, L8 and L9∼L13 were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FT-IR, and UV-Vis spectroscopies along with their electrochemical properties. Moreover, molecular structures of ligands L2∼L4, L8 and L9 have been established by single-crystal X-ray crystallography.
